Abstract:

Between 1912 and 1916, the Danish artist and graphic designer Gerhard Heilmann published a series of articles in the journal of the Danish Ornithological Society. From the outset, Heilmann's work aroused international interest, and in 1926 it was published in English under the title The origin of birds, setting the international agenda for research in bird evolution for the next 40 years. In Denmark, however, Heilmann's highly original work was generally ignored or even ridiculed by zoologists. This paper presents an account of those factors and events that allowed Heilmann to complete the transformation from absolute amateur to international authority on the intricate issue of bird evolution and bird-dinosaur relationships. It demonstrates how Heilmann's artistic abilities played an important role in securing him international renown as a palaeontologist, while at the same time his lack of scientific credentials led to his complete isolation from the Danish zoological establishment. More particularly, Heilmann's work is shown to have developed alongside and in connection to another classic work: On growth and form (1917) by the Scottish zoologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson.

Abstract:

Early Eocene spores and pollen assemblages from the uppermost part of the Stolle Klint Clay and the overlying Fur Formation are diverse and well preserved. The terrestrial microflora comprises 42 species of spores and 108 species of pollen and four spores and pollen zones are established i.e. Interpollis velum-Labrapollis globosus, Basopollis atumenscens, Basopollis orthobasalis and Thomsonipollis magnificus zones. The zones are directly correlated to the existing tephra-chronology and stratigraphy. The dinoflagellate cysts assemblages are referred to Zones 6 and 7 of Heilmann-Clausen or the upper part of the Apectodinium hyperacanthum and Glaphyrocysta ordinata Interval Biozone of Powell. A marked shift in the terrestrial and marine palynomorph assemblages takes place at the transitionbetween the two oldest spore and pollen zones at c. 1.2 m below ash layer –19b.

Lesbian neo-Victorian novels such as Sarah Waters’s Tipping the Velvet and Emma Donoghue’s Frog Music feature representations of lesbian erotics that are engaged in contemporary discourses of desire in opposition to Victorian pornographic assumptions that pathologize the lesbian subject. Because neo-Victorian cultural production according to Heilmann and Llewellyn engages with reinterpreting and rediscovering the Vicorians, lesbian authors return to that period in order to interrogate where and how lesbian desire might manifest and how that desire can be implicitly converted into a subversive form of power. Waters and Donoghue represent lesbian sexual connection through erotically charged consumption and sadomasochistic consummation represented by moments of lesbian vaginal fisting in an effort to usurp traditional and overdetermined heterosexist ideas of lesbian erotics. Consumption/consummation reinvest the lesbian with erotic power in the neo-Victorian novel.

ZusammenfassungDie Synoviauntersuchung ist von großer Bedeutung für die Diagnose, Prognose und Therapie von Gelenkerkrankungen. Ziel dieser Studie war die Untersuchung der Anwendbarkeit des für die Humanmedizin entwickelten »biochemischen Gelenkfunktionstests nach Heilmann« beim Pferd. Mit dieser Verdünnungsmethode kann auch aus den kleinen Gelenken eine ausreichende Menge an Untersuchungsmaterial gewonnen und das absolute Gelenkflüssigkeitsvolumen bestimmt werden. Untersucht wurden 307 Gelenkpunktate von Vorderfußwurzel-Mittelgelenk (VFW-M), Fessel-, Kron- und Hufgelenk von 39 gelenkgesunden Schlachtpferden und -ponys hinsichtlich des Synoviavolumens (punktierbares und absolutes Volumen) und der biochemischen Zusammensetzung (Gesamtprotein, alkalische Phosphatase, Laktatdehydrogenase, Albumin, Globulin, Albumin-Globulin-Verhältnis). Neben der Ermittlung des absoluten Synoviavolumens konnten signifikante Unterschiede bei der biochemischen Zusammensetzung der verschiedenen Gelenke ermittelt werden. Somit ließ sich der Test erfolgreich beim Pferd anwenden, obgleich sich die Bestimmung des absoluten Synoviavolumens für die Diagnose von Gelenkerkrankungen als nicht geeignet erwies.

AbstractA class of deep Boltzmann machines is considered in the simplified framework of a quenched system with Gaussian noise and independent entries. The quenched pressure of a K-layers spin glass model is studied allowing interactions only among consecutive layers. A lower bound for the pressure is found in terms of a convex combination of K Sherrington–Kirkpatrick models and used to study the annealed and replica symmetric regimes of the system. A map with a one-dimensional monomer–dimer system is identified and used to rigorously control the annealed region at arbitrary depth K with the methods introduced by Heilmann and Lieb. The compression of this high-noise region displays a remarkable phenomenon of localisation of the processing layers. Furthermore, a replica symmetric lower bound for the limiting quenched pressure of the model is obtained in a suitable region of the parameters and the replica symmetric pressure is proved to have a unique stationary point.

Abstract:

Zusammenfassung. Hintergrund: Die LEO-Studie 2018 ( Grotlüschen, Buddeberg, Dutz, Heilmann & Stammer, 2019 ) belegt, dass 12,1% der deutschen Bevölkerung im erwerbsfähigen Alter maximal einzelne Sätze lesen und schreiben können und somit als gering literalisiert gelten müssen. Für die Schweiz zeigen Studien, dass eine beachtliche Anzahl von Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen über unzureichende Lesefähigkeiten verfügen. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, inwiefern sich Zusammenhänge zwischen den lautsprachlichen und den schriftsprachlichen Leistungen bei Menschen mit Illettrismus im Erwachsenenalter zeigen. Methoden: Anhand einer Testbatterie zur Erfassung schriftsprachlicher Kompetenzen und Vorläuferfähigkeiten für den Schriftspracherwerb sowie Interviews zur Lernbiographie wurden in einer Querschnittsstudie mit Erwachsenen Daten von 20 Illettristen und 10 Kontrollproband_innen erhoben und miteinander verglichen. Ergebnisse: Im Gruppenvergleich zeigen sich deutliche Unterschiede zwischen Experimental- und Kontrollgruppe wobei die Kontrollgruppe in den Tests fast durchweg besser abschneidet als die Experimentalgruppe. Diskussion: Insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Lernbiographie der Betroffenen ist die Relevanz früher professioneller Unterstützung hervorzuheben. Es lassen sich Hinweise für die schulischen Rahmenbedingungen und die Förderschwerpunkte ableiten.

AbstractThe abolition of Agricultural Tax in 2005 was a major policy of the early Hu–Wen administration. But how and why did it happen? Drawing on abundant media reports, archive documents and internal speeches by key policymakers, as well as on the author's interviews, this article argues that this reform was pushed through (the “how”) by “principle-guided policy experimentation” with origins in the period of Jiang Zemin's leadership. Not only does this show policy continuities from the Jiang–Zhu era into the Hu–Wen period, it also reveals a different process of policy experimentation from that identified by Sebastian Heilmann in the economic policy arena. Under principle-guided policy experimentation, Chinese central decision makers first reached consensus on the principle of the Rural Tax and Fee Reform (RTFR) drawing on policy learning from prior bottom-up local experimentation, and then formulated and implemented an experimental programme from the top-down, funding it in order to encourage local governments to participate. The evidence suggests that international, political (rural instability), economic and fiscal considerations came to explain leaders’ decisions (the “why”) on tax reform as much as their individual preferences.

Abstract:

AbstractDespite the importance of understanding the narrative abilities of bilingual children, minimal research has focused on Spanish–English bilingual preschoolers. Therefore, this study examined the cross-language macrostructure and within-language microstructure relations in the English and Spanish narratives of bilingual preschoolers and examined whether language dominance impacted these relations. Narratives were elicited from 200 preschool-aged children of Latino heritage. Microstructure measures included the number of different words, the mean length of utterance in words, and the subordination index. The narrative scoring scheme measured macrostructure (Heilmann, Miller, Nockerts, & Dunaway, 2010). Using standardized language testing of expressive vocabulary and sentence comprehension, the children were classified into two groups: balanced dominance and Spanish dominant. Results revealed that English macrostructure and Spanish macrostructure were not related after controlling for microstructure measures within languages. Children’s microstructure abilities in each language were strongly related to their macrostructure abilities within that language. Dominance did not moderate these relations. Consistent with previous research on school-age children, vocabulary was a unique predictor of macrostructure production. This study highlights the additional importance of utterance length within both languages to macrostructure during the preschool years. The absence of unique cross-language macrostructure relations and the absence of dominance group moderation may have been due to the immaturity of the children’s narratives.

Abstract:

The moral justification for the rollback of benefits and services under the austerity programme unleashed by George Osborne since 2010, when he was first appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by British Prime Minister David Cameron, is predicated on a neoliberal ideology that views unemployment and poverty as stemming from personal failings rather than the ways in which the free market has shaped British society since the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979. By using Charles Murray's neo-Victorian argument that the welfare state has created a work-shy, antisocial ‘underclass’, neoliberal politicians and journalists have mythologised the Victorian era as one of discipline and stability, providing a model for the sort of society we should aspire once more to be. This article argues that Richard Warlow's television series, Ripper Street (2012 –), in showing the socio-economic causes of crime in late-Victorian London and the need for collective action and state intervention to alleviate them, challenges the construction of the era used to justify neoliberal austerity. It does so through what Ann Heilmann and Mark Llewellyn characterise as one of the defining features of neo-Victorian fiction: its ability to demonstrate the ‘quasi-fictiveness of the Victorians to our own period’, implicitly drawing parallels between the progressive zeal of nineteenth-century social reformers and the anti-austerity movement today.

Abstract:

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the home literacy environment (HLE) on the English narrative development of Spanish–English bilingual children from low-income backgrounds. Method Longitudinal data were collected on 81 bilingual children from preschool through 1st grade. English narrative skills were assessed in the fall and spring of each year. Microstructure measures included mean length of utterance in morphemes and number of different words. The Narrative Scoring Scheme (Heilmann, Miller, Nockerts, & Dunaway, 2010) measured macrostructure. Each fall, the children's mothers reported the frequency of literacy activities and number of children's books in the home. Growth curve modeling was used to describe the children's narrative development and the impact of the HLE over time. Results Significant growth occurred for all narrative measures. The HLE did not affect microstructure growth. The frequency with which mothers read to their children had a positive impact on the growth of the children's total Narrative Scoring Scheme scores. Other aspects of the HLE, such as the frequency with which the mothers told stories, did not affect macrostructure development. Conclusions These results provide information about the development of English narrative abilities and demonstrate the importance of frequent book reading for the overall narrative quality of children from Spanish-speaking homes who are learning English.

PurposeCompanies have to consider people as one of the most important resources. Especially, the combination of demanding work and academic workers requires activities with regard to employer branding. An employer brand is an intangible asset that allows companies to look for motivated and capable employees (Hillebrandt, 2013). Consequently, the concept of employer branding can be used (Brickson, 2005; Heilmann et al., 2013). The purpose of this paper is to supplement the first empirical investigations with students as new employees (e.g. Daniel et al., 2015) by the perceptions of potential employees in less powerful, i.e. more rural, regions.Design/methodology/approachThis paper summarizes existing findings and enhances two empirical investigations of 431 students of a technical university in a medium-sized city and 211 students of a university of applied sciences in a rural region in Germany. The data collection and analysis will focus on different methodical alternatives of identifying important drivers and dimensions of employer branding, as well as identifying different groups of potential employees and gender differences.FindingsThe paper highlights the need of the underrepresented but successful consideration of group specific analyses and following strategies in case of employer branding. The existing approaches of the establishment of an employer branding concepts can be improved through more suitable strategy elements when the addressees are better known.Originality/valueThe findings allow new insights, especially to smaller regions and companies and the awareness of group-specific analyses in general and in case of the development of an employer branding concept.

Abstract:

The electrification of transportation and goods delivery networks, including ground, marine, and air, is becoming a reality around the world. These networks are logistically complex, and with this transition there is an added knowledge gap in the understanding of the energy storage system, such as lithium-ion battery packs. In Seattle, the local transit agency King County Metro is a national leader in transitioning to a fully electrified bus fleet and is the case study for this work. As transit agencies, such as King County Metro, adopt electrified vehicles, there are many new parameters that must be considered in route planning, fleet maintenance, and charging logistics. The literature shows that a longitudinal vehicle dynamics model can be used to estimate energy and load requirements along a route [1,2]. This work utilizes these known vehicle models, vehicle specifications, and battery information in a software tool. Software inputs include geographical information system (GIS) data, ridership data, and vehicle acceleration profiles. Model results allow the user to rank routes using metrics designed to consider route efficiency, vehicle performance, and known battery degradation events, such as regenerative braking and high-power discharge. This work also introduces how the battery state of charge, overpotential, current window, and deviations from equilibrium influence the route rankings. These results provide both systems-level and module-level insights beyond conventional vehicle and logistics models, allowing the user to make decisions that are predictive rather than reactive and can improve the lifetime of the batteries on-board.
