Green, Rachel Louise. "Heimat, fremde Heimat : renegotiating and deterritorialising Heimat in new Austrian film." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/17064/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the complex relationship between the concepts of Heimat and Fremde in a number of contemporary Austrian films. Firstly, by revisiting and re-examining a variety of Heimatfilme, from the genre’s inception in the 1920s up until the present day, I aim to draw on the ideas posed by scholars including Johannes von Moltke which challenge the common assumption that Heimat exists in direct opposition to Fremde, and argue that the two seemingly contradictory concepts are in fact mutually contingent on one another. Then, focussing on key works by the New Austrian Filmmakers, Houchang Allahyari (I Love Vienna, 1991), Florian Flicker (Suzie Washington, 1998) and Barbara Albert (Nordrand, 1999), I demonstrate the manner in which these filmmakers continue to draw on the semantics and syntax of the Heimatfilm genre in order to re-evaluate the complex relationship between Heimat and Fremde within the context of post-1990 Europe. These filmmakers, as this thesis demonstrates, return to the Heimatfilm genre as a means to probe issues of space, place, identity and belonging, which, I maintain, also undergo a series of renegotiations and redefinitions within their films. By drawing on contemporary globalisation and migrant and diasporic film studies, and by critically engaging with contemporary Heimat discourse, this thesis seeks to investigate the manner in which these New Austrian Filmmakers attempt to renegotiate and deterritorialise the concept of Heimat in response to the changing needs of an increasingly globalised and multicultural society.

Abstract:
The first part of the dissertation describes the history of local museums and the history of scientific research on the concept of Heimat. Not only historical and ethnographic studies are taken into account, but also sociological and anthropological theories which were formulated against the background of the debate on globalisation. In this way Heimat and locality are treated as equivalent terms. The second empirical part describes and analyses the local museums of the districts Köpenick, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Neukölln in Berlin. The focus lies on the research on main and temporary exhibitions and the analysis of the role of material culture within the framework of the museums. This means the examination of both the thematic structuring of the exhibitions and the range of objects and their presentation. In the course of this material culture studies are taken into consideration. Coming from the first two parts a museum concept is formulated. This concept takes up the characteristics of the museums and adds the considerations on the terms Heimat and locality. In conclusion local museums are regarded as ethnographic museums which are able to reflect current social developments and discussions.

Krivanova, Brana. "Libuse Monikova: Perspectives on Heimat." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289826.

Full text
Abstract:
As one of the most significant postmodern writers in contemporary Germany, Libuse Monikova critically explores the political divisions of Europe from different perspectives, using an interdisciplinary approach to educate her reader. All her works relate either directly or indirectly to her native Czecho-Slovakia. This dissertation focuses on four of Monikova's works, Prager Fenster, "Tetom and Tuba," Pavane fur eine verstorbene Infantin, and Der Taumel, and examines her understanding of the densely layered concept of Heimat. Monikova depicts her Heimat construct through the metaphor of disability and disease as a landscape of German and Soviet occupations and as a territory of historically and politically rooted power struggles. Her analysis of the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from the former Czecho-Slovakia as well as her portrayal of Czech complicity in the totalitarian regime redefines concepts of victimization and resistance, and reveals the unstable discursive nature of subordination and domination. Monikova's concept of Heimat cannot be fully understood without the inclusion of minority and gender discourses as well as art as cultural space. This study underscores Monikova's analysis of the situation of women and minorities in her country of origin. Monikova makes transparent the kind of masculine superiority that is comfortably ensconced not only in Czecho-Slovak society, but also in western epistemologies. Her dynamic, witty, and politically alert female figures are independent intellectuals with vitriolic humor who offer a fresh alternative to ideological and dogmatic idealism that prevails in many feminist texts of the 1970s. Furthermore, I attempt to show how Monikova, an author who emphasizes a decentralized perspective of writing through otherness and displacement, portrays minorities living in her Heimat. Methodologically, I include theories of Czech, Slovak, German, and US cultural critics in my study. Consequently, I seek to not only [re]discover Monikova as a writer and political activist in the Czech Republic where her texts began to be published only recently, but also to engage her critics in a constructive inter-cultural dialogue.

Abstract:

Nikjamal, Nazli. "Die Konzeption von Heimat im Werk deutscher Schriftsteller iranischer Herkunft." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2018. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/53584.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the notion of Heimat in the literary production of two German authors of Iranian origin, Navid Kermani and SAID. It presents a methodological challenge to the existing approaches to this type of literature, which have tended to characterise it, as in one way or another hyphenated, thus e.g. as 'German-Iranian' literature in our case. Indeed, existing models of analysis have been placing this literature in discourses that connect with Orientalism and occidental Universalism and in so doing conform to western traditions of a global universality thesis, which ultimately, and often contrary to the scholars' own best intentions, 'orientalise' this literature and its authors. This thesis therefore proposes to study the chosen authors on a case by case basis rather than through the lens of an all-encompassing theoretical model. To enable the proposed case by case analysis the thesis first elaborates on the evolution, during the last ca. 250 years, of both, the German concept of Heimat and its Iranian equivalent, Vatan, demonstrating that these Modern notions of collective identity evolved over time within a framework of remarkable German-Iranian conceptual interplay, if not utter interdependence. Based on this the thesis arrives at the conclusion that SAIDs conception of Heimat for all the author's rejection of any form of nationalism remains within the boundaries of universalistic worldviews that tend to separate as firmly distinct, 'Orient' and 'Occident'. However, Kermani's concept of Heimat completely transcends any such antagonistic juxtapositions and thus this thesis provides a close reading of his unique and integrative approach to the 'East'/'West' nexus by employing a comparative methodology that I have termed 'cultural translation'.

Peabody, Seth. "Environmental Fantasies: Mountains, Cities, and Heimat in Weimar Cinema." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467382.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes filmic environments within Weimar cinema and argues for a concept of Heimat in which the landscapes of modernity are embedded into the environments of home. Mountain films such as Der heilige Berg enact a visual mechanization of the Alpine landscape; industrial films such as Sprengbagger 1010 constellate pastoral and modernized scenes in a similar fashion to contemporary Heimat club journals; and urban films such as Menschen am Sonntag reveal the ways in which the city figures as Heimat within Weimar film. Further, film journals display contradictory discourses surrounding Heimat before the standardization of idyllic rural scenes in the postwar Heimatfilm genre. These filmic environments interact with the real-world environment in complex and multi-directional ways. They participate in the development of new ways of seeing, marketing, and using the environment and function as nodes within sociopolitical debates regarding human communities and physical landscapes. These findings complicate arguments made by environmental historians who have claimed that the German notion of Heimat, encompassing both natural and cultural elements, might offer a useful alternative to the essentialism of the American wilderness ideal. In fact, the image of Heimat as a rural nature-culture hybrid, at least within film, only became dominant in the Nazi era. Within Weimar cinema, the term Heimat represents the focal point of a much more diverse and open discussion of environmental values.

Avery, Joan. "Moses Rosenkranz, the Bukovina and the concept of Sprache als Heimat." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2009. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1379.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to present the poet Moses Rosenkranz from the Bukovina and to examine how Heidegger's phrase Sprache als Heimat applied to the life and works of this particular poet and his environment. The first section looks at Rosenkranz's biography within the context of the Bukovina, where many people grew up speaking German, Ruthenian, Romanian, Yiddish and Polish. This placed the authors from the region in a particularly favourable context for having first-hand knowledge of the way language could or could not become an ersatz home for them in everyday life once their own homes had been lost. The second part of the thesis investigates the way loss affected Rosenkranz's writing and the conditions Heidegger saw as necessary for an encounter with Dasein. This revealed some of the details of Heidegger's understanding of the words `existence', `language' and `Heimat' which could not correspond to Rosenkranz's relationship to language or belonging. The third part of the thesis considers ways in which a sense of belonging could be recreated in writing. Rosenkranz's relationship with words and the material realities it involved were analysed by using his autobiography, his poems and the letters he wrote to his first wife Anna Ruebner-Rosenkranz. Paul Celan, as the most significant poet from the Bukovina, is often cited as a means of comparing the two writers and in order to convey a fuller picture of the literary area. Comparing Heidegger's thoughts on language and home with the way Rosenkranz and other Bukovina poets understood the two concepts provided new material for an interpretation of Sprache als Heimat in terms of the relationship between writer and reader. This revealed that the understanding of language in the works of the Bukovina authors was actually closer to the conclusions on language reached by the philosopher Levinas than to those of Heidegger. Levinas shows how the relationship to the other, to whom language is addressed, can become the real reason for writing and the point where language and belonging meet.

Abstract: Within the scope of the present work, the use of the interpretation pattern Heimat in the lyrics of German-language songs is examined. The intention is to make a contribution to the interest of cultural studies-oriented research in the field of teaching German as a foreign Language, which wants to examine culture as implicit knowledge structures in German-speaking discourses. For the introduction, the current status of research is presented, which critically questions the intercultural approach in foreign language teaching and offers an updated understanding of the term 'culture' on the one hand and of learning processes on the other. A critical consideration of the understanding of foreign language teaching as a space for teaching and learning 'intercultural communication' is then asked about the substance of the intercultural concept, and how these contents can be integrated into a language teaching that is based on current scientifical knowledge in the field of cultural-studies. The thematic spectrum reveals itself in the tension field of the contrasting pair foreign and self and includes identity and beloning aspects, which are considered in the context of this work against the background of globalization under the focussing of their reference to the dimension of space. The deliberations will ultimately lead to the interpretation pattern Heimat, which is presented at first as part of this thematic spectrum in its context of cultural history. By means of a multi-step interpretation pattern analysis, the uses of its components are then worked out in the individual song texts. Keywords: German as a foreign language, cultural studies in teaching as a foreign language, cultural interpretation pattern, interculturality, Heimat, Identity, belonging, space

Abstract:
Revolutionary advances in transportation and novel communication services challenge traditional notions of acculturation and integration of immigrants into receiving societies. In many cases, migrants' connections to the homeland can be explained using psycho-social theories as well as political and economic incentivebased frameworks. This process is facilitated by the plethora of communication services and technological devices that help migrants to keep up with close and intimate ties as well as keep abreast of occurrences in their homeland. Through interpersonal interactions, social networks seem to be fundamental to maintaining migrants' awareness of events in their home communities. In addition, there is an emerging phenomenon of websites created with the aim of reconnecting migrants to daily life in their places of origin: heimat websites. This thesis presents a set of studies aimed at presenting the dynamics that characterise the use of heimat websites. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques, a good understanding was derived of the way heimat websites are used for the maintenance of cross-border micro-connections. Due to the public, transnational nature of heimat websites, they allow migrants to engage in online behaviours that would otherwise not be possible. This investigation argues that heimat websites can be potentially used for civic participation and collective action from abroad. Also, heimat websites seem to be used by some migrants to reproduce their social status in their communities of origin through the online display of images of modernism and material culture. Furthennore, heimat websites seem to be instrumental in administering the social reality of the community to migrants as it unfolds. This investigation also unravels online processes used by migrants to maintain their social identity through images of the homeland and local infonnation. Simultaneously, heimat websites appear to work as a conduit through which social remittances travel to the homeland in the fonn of images, ideas, and social practices. In this way, heimat websites are places where the sending and receiving communities merge together to varying degrees. Finally, amongst the findings, lurking on the website and experiencing homesickness are correlated. This thesis contributes to existing theory in diasporic websites by extending the current classification of diaspora-homeland websites by presenting heimat websites and their dynamics. Findings from this work can be used for the better design of communication services for transnational communities. Likewise, implications for design can be derived to improve interaction on heimat websites. This set of implications could help to improve the way heimat websites are conceived in tenns of interactions, news reports, and organisation of infonnation.

Graaf, Jenny. "After the expulsions : the lost German Heimat in memory, monuments and museums." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14478/.

Full text
Abstract:
This comparative thesis explores how museums and monuments in postwar east and west Germany commemorate the eastern territories that were lost after 1945. I focus on the concept of Heimat which spans aesthetics and politics, psychological and political identity and emerges from a condition of loss, thus it features highly in my attempt to understand the development and current state of memorialisation. The centrality of the notion of Heimat in expellee memorialisation is a field as yet little explored in research on the expulsions, particularly in east Germany. Following chapters on the historical context, Heimat, and cultural memory, Chapter Three discusses monuments erected between 1947 and 1989 by expellees who resettled in West Germany which are used to mourn, replace, reflect on and revere the old Heimat. I compare post-unification west and east German memorials, discussing key differences resulting from the former taboo on expellee commemoration in East Germany. I additionally examine changing sites of memory, memorials that illustrate a shifting integration process and investigate the use of symbolism. Chapter Four considers the interaction between eyewitnesses, historians and curators in the portrayal of history in museums and Heimatstuben at Görlitz, Greifswald, Lüneburg, Regensburg, Molfsee, Gehren, Rendsburg and Altenburg, in addition to the Altvaterturm in Thuringia. Chapter Five discusses the contentious Berlin Stiftung Flucht Vertreibung Versöhnung Centre, first mooted in 1999 by the Bund der Vertriebenen as a Centre against Expulsions. The tension between ‘German victims’ and ‘victims of the Germans’ is a recurring theme in this thesis. My conclusions highlight how memorialisation is framed clearly within the contemporary socio-political context, demonstrate the durability and flexibility of the term Heimat and illustrate the resilience of the regard for the lost territories, not only for expellees; the idea of the German East persists in German cultural memory.

Eng, Tord.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the short story “Wanderer, kommst du nach Spa ...” (1950) by the German author Heinrich Böll (1917-1985). The well-established interpretation of this famous short story is that it deals with the dismal fact that the Nazis ended the development of Western culture, which cumulatively had been on its way since Greek antiquity. In this paper another reading is proposed, namely that the short story sheds light on the influence of the Romantic era in Germany and that a certain interpretation and use of Romanticism provided some of the seeds to the obscure ideas of the Nazi era. Research on Böll´s early writings is presented. The notion of cultural memory is introduced. The intertextual connections between Bölls text and other texts are being uncovered. Most fruitful proves the connection between “Wanderer” and the poem “Der Spaziergang” (1795) by Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) to be. “Wanderer” can be read as a satirical version of Schillers poem. Reasons for Böll to choose Schiller’s elegy as a target are discussed at length. A parable in the story, ”wie ein Gesicht eines Schlafenden” / like a face of a sleeping person, unfolds an undertext to the short story, a Catholic text. Jesus, the Holy Communion, prayers and the eternal cross are present. Wanderer can be read as a requiem over the young soldier. Further, the inability of the wounded soldier to connect to his surroundings is interpreted as a parallell to Germany at the end of the war; the Nazis had stolen the Heimat from the people and it was no longer possible to interpret the world as something you belonged to. While Heinrich Böll on the surface of the text tries to recapture the German language from its nazi-poisend condition, the protagonist within the text regains his identity by means of his own handwriting - a part of his language.

Abstract:
Hodgin, Nick. "Screening the East : Heimat, memory and nostalgia in German post-unification film." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2007. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15115/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a close study of a wide range of films made between 1989 and 2005, which offer an insight into life in eastern Germany since unification. The principal focus is on the emergence of an east German identity, which, sixteen years since unification, continues to stimulate academic interest but which has seldom been explored in terms of contemporary film. East German identity is considered in its historical and cultural contexts, and with reference to three related issues - Heimat, memory and nostalgia. Having assessed the GDR's attempt to forge an identity and the debate surrounding a separate post-GDR identity, I move on to discuss the films, which are organised and analysed thematically. Drawing on social political studies, cultural theory and archival material, I consider the representation of provincial communities in the popular sentimental Heimat narratives of the early nineties and the period's sober social-critical films, which offer a corrective to the nostalgic impulses of the former. In the chapter that follows, I address the effects of unification on the urban population (principally that of Berlin), and turn to the east Germans' controversial celebration of the GDR past in the final chapter. The analysis of the films concludes that a new east German identity has emerged, one that involves an awkwardly articulated movement, whereby the east Germans face the future whilst simultaneously looking backwards. In some films, this leads to the resurgence of a localised community that celebrates the values of an imagined past, whether of a romanticised, a historical vision of German, or of an idealised GDR. In others, a yearning for the past hinders individuals' arrival in the present. The films, I conclude, ultimately demonstrate the continuation of an east German particularism that resists and problematises true integration between east and west.

Abstract:
This study discusses the evolution of the heimat in the work of two authors belonging to the german speaking minority in roumania: adolf meschendorfer and rose auslander. The historical background covers the period from the end of the 19th century to the present. These authors lived during the hungarian and subsequent roumanian dominations, characterised by the progressive eradication of the previous rights of the minorities. As a victim of the holocaust, rose auslander was compelled to emigrate. The study ends with a survey covering the fall of the communist regime and dictatorship and the question of the survival of the literature after the massive emigration at the end of this century
