Abstract:
In this article, a specific pattern of West–Russia–West transfer in economic thought is described using two early cases from the 19th century. This pattern suggests that experiencing strong influence from the West, leading Russian economists developed and modified Western economic theories, adapting them to specific Russian political, ideological and cultural circumstances. As a result, they exerted a certain influence upon the next generations of Western economists. Two concrete examples are described: Smith–Storch–List (dealing with the theory of inner goods) and Haxthausen–Cherny

Abstract:
The Weimar Constitution marked Germany’s first sortie into democracy, with the Republic intended to be democratic, humane and constitutional and based on the principle of popular sovereignty. However, its election system of proportional representation favoured small parties and impeded the formation of a government, with its final governments being presidential cabinets. Constitutions are often analysed by various academic fields. While philosophy and historiography set the framework for this analysis, constitutional law may be regarded as the principal discipline in this regard. The social sc

This chapter begins with a discussion of Kant, who led an almost abstract life of a confirmed bachelor. Heine links Kant's bachelorhood with his remote quarters, depicted as leading what we might call a “peaceful” (friedlich) life apart from the world, that is, one set within a “border fence”—an Umfriedigung or Einfriedigung, which are precisely the terms that the Grimms' Dictionary list as synonyms of Hag. The remainder of the chapter deals with Heinrich von Kleist's story “The Earthquake in Chile” (1807) and Johann Gottlieb Fichte, the erstwhile supporter of republican ideals and reputed Jac

This chapter evaluates Friedrich Schiller's novella The Criminal of Lost Honor (1786), as well as Heinrich von Kleist's novella Michael Kohlhaas (1808–1810). Although Kleist did not explicitly address the poetological questions that Schiller's novella had posed, Kleist's novella is also best understood as a contribution to the discussion of the poetics of cases. The chapter argues that both Schiller's and Kleist's novellas are not only two literary case histories but also, moreover, two cases that comprise what will become distinctions of literature itself: the distinctions between history and

Abstract:
Critics from E. T. A. Hoffmann forward have struggled to reconcile the suspensefulness of Beethoven’s Coriolan overture with the more “reflective” tone of the tragedy that inspired it, Heinrich von Collin’s Coriolan. In response, many critics have attempted to argue that the overture owes more to Shakespeare’s Coriolanus than to Collin’s play. But Beethoven had compelling reasons to engage with Collin’s tragedy. The Coriolanus story was also known to Beethoven and his contemporaries in multiple versions, across several different media, complicating attempts to interpret the overture in light o

Abstract:
This chapter examines the failure of elites to build consensus on a proper policy response to the onset of worldwide economic depression after the crash of the New York Stock Exchange in October 1929. Economic crisis overwhelmed all other public discussion in the early spring of 1930, when the Social Democratic chancellor Hermann Müller and his cabinet were forced to resign. In this potentially dire situation, Paul von Hindenburg decided to use his constitutional prerogative as president to declare a national emergency. In Hindenburg's eyes, not only had the Müller regime failed to formulate a
