Abstract:
Abstract. Ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) and lidar measurements were performed in Shanghai, China, during May 2016 to investigate the vertical distribution of summertime atmospheric pollutants. In this study, vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations were retrieved from MAX-DOAS measurements using the Heidelberg Profile (HEIPRO) algorithm, while vertical distribution of ozone (O3) was obtained from an ozone lidar. Sensitivity study of the MAX-DOAS aerosol profile retrieval shows that the a priori aerosol profile shape has significant influences on the aerosol profile retrieval. Aerosol profiles retrieved from MAX-DOAS measurements with Gaussian a priori profile demonstrate the best agreements with simultaneous lidar measurements and vehicle-based tethered-balloon observations among all a priori aerosol profiles. Tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs) measured with MAX-DOAS show a good agreement with OMI satellite observations with a Pearson correlation coefficient (R) of 0.95. In addition, measurements of the O3 vertical distribution indicate that the ozone productions do not only occur at surface level but also at higher altitudes (about 1.1 km). Planetary boundary layer (PBL) height and horizontal and vertical wind field information were integrated to discuss the ozone formation at upper altitudes. The results reveal that enhanced ozone concentrations at ground level and upper altitudes are not directly related to horizontal and vertical transportation. Similar patterns of O3 and HCHO vertical distributions were observed during this campaign, which implies that the ozone productions near the surface and at higher altitudes are mainly influenced by the abundance of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the lower troposphere.

Abstract:
Abstract. Toxic nitrogen oxides produced by high temperature combustion are prevalent in urban environments, contributing to a significant health burden. Nitrogen oxides such as NO2 and HONO in pollution are important for hydroxyl radical (OH) production and overall oxidative capacity in urban environments; however, current mechanisms cannot explain high daytime levels of HONO observed in many urban and rural locations around the world. Here we present HONO, NO2 and aerosol extinction vertical distributions retrieved from multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurements in suburban Melbourne, which are the first MAX-DOAS results from the Australian continent. Using the optimal estimation algorithm HEIPRO we show that vertical profiles for NO2 and HONO can be calculated with a low dependence on the retrieval forward model and a priori parameters, despite a lack of independent co-located aerosol or trace gas measurements. Between December 2016 and April 2017 average peak NO2 values of 8±2 ppb indicated moderate traffic pollution levels, and high daytime peak values of HONO were frequently detected, averaging 220±30 ppt in the middle of the day. HONO levels measured in Melbourne were typically lower than those recorded in the morning in other places around the world, indicating minimal overnight accumulation, but peaked in the middle of the day to be commensurate with midday concentrations in locations with much higher NO2 pollution. Regular midday peaks in the diurnal cycle of HONO surface concentrations have only previously been reported in rural locations. The HONO measured implies a daytime source term 1 ppb h−1 above the predicted photostationary state (PSS) concentration and represents an OH radical source up to 4 times stronger than from ozone photolysis alone in the lowest 500 m of the troposphere. The dependence of the high midday HONO levels on soil moisture, combined with the observed diurnal and vertical profiles, provides evidence for a strong photoactivated and ground-based daytime HONO source.

Abstract:
SUMMARY Expressiveness and Formal Regularity: What Makes Esperanto Suitable for Machine Translation The multilingual machine translation system DLT makes use of Esperanto as an intermediate language in which a substantial part of the translation subprocesses are carried out, especially all applications of Artificial Intelligence such as semantic disambiguation by means of a knowledge bank and a word expert system. The requirements for such an intermediate language and the reasons for preferring Esperanto to both ethnic languages and other planned languages and artificial symbol systems in this function are described. The motivation for this choice is found in a combination of formal regularity, subtle expressiveness, and semantic autonomy. These three properties do not combine with each other except in a purposefully planned language system that after the phase of deliberate system design has passed through a sufficiently long period of practical, unreflected use in a speech community. This condition reflects the development from a planned language project to a human language.

Abstract:
Communication is something that is part of us as individuals and an asset in any environment. Just as human beings need to communicate to satisfy their own needs, companies also have this need, and increasingly want to do it quickly, interactively and enabling them to be competitive enough. For this reason organizational communication has become one of the main challenges of the business world. To ensure their survival, companies have to keep their employees connected and aligned to the business, share their successes and failures and enhance corporate culture, increasing the motivation of their people. Reporting these values has become an important goal for companies who are aware of this concern and face communication as a key factor for success. The intranet phenomenon arises in the present context, where the emergence of information and communication technologies provides a strong focus for organizations in the area of Internal Communications. The case study of the implementation of HeiPort which deserved a major highlight during this investigation, aims to realize the impact that this new channel of communication has brought to the SCC Internal Communications strategy and the daily lives of the employees. For this we performed a 6-month internship in the Company, where all the necessary information was collected and a specifically designed survey was applied for this purpose.

Abstract:
This chapter extends the sceptical discussion of meritocracy to higher education, and access to employment. The professions’ partially successful attempt to achieve a closed shop restricts entry by those from less advantaged homes, and the less academically skilled of their own children. Data on qualifications and ‘personal qualities’ required for recruitment show detailed connections between social and cultural capital, and occupational outcome, are complicated. Higher education is status stratified: not all degrees are equal. The Higher Education Initial Participation Rate (‘HEIPR’) exaggerates the number of graduates; other statistical sources do not include data on social class. Increasing student diversity does not automatically increase mobility: working class students continue to be disadvantaged once they enter university. Meritocratic and individualistic explanations of mobility are inadequate.
