Abstract:
Summary To address the need to predict the properties of fluids in severe environments in the oil and gas industry, a comprehensive thermodynamic model has been developed for mixtures containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), H2O, and selected salts. The model is based on the previously developed mixed-solvent electrolyte framework, which combines an equation of state for standard-state properties of individual species, an excess-Gibbs-energy model, and an algorithm for solving phase and chemical equilibria in multiphase systems. The standard-state properties are calculated from the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers (Helgeson et al. 1974a, 1974b, 1976, 1981; Tanger and Helgeson 1988) equation, whereas the excess Gibbs energy is expressed as a sum of a long-range electrostatic-interaction term expressed by a Pitzer-Debye-Hückel equation (Pitzer 1980), a virial coefficient-type term for interactions between ions, and a short-range term for interactions involving neutral molecules. The model has been parameterized using critically evaluated phase equilibrium data for various binary and ternary subsystems of the H2S/CO2/H2O/Na/Ca/Cl system and has been validated for temperatures ranging from 0 to 300°C, pressures up to approximately 3,500 atm, and salt concentrations up to solid saturation. The model reproduces chemical speciation in acid gas/brine systems as exemplified by the accurate prediction of pH. Because of its capability of predicting pH and activities of solution species, the model can serve as a foundation for studying metal/environment interactions in severe oil and gas environments.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Densities of aqueous solutions of AlCl3 (containing dilute HCl) have been measured at 10, 25, 40, and 55 °C with results that have led to defined apparent molar volumes. We have used the Pitzer ion interaction model as the basis for analyzing these apparent molar volumes to obtain standard state (infinite dilution) partial molar volumes of AlCl3(aq) at each temperature. We have also made similar use of apparent molar heat capacities of aqueous solutions of AlCl3–HCl and Al(NO3)3–HNO3 from Hovey and Tremaine to obtain standard state partial molar heat capacities of AlCl3(aq) and Al(NO3)3(aq) at these same temperatures. Finally, the standard state partial molar volumes and heat capacities have been used with the Helgeson–Kirkham semi-theoretical equation of state for aqueous ions to provide a basis for estimating the thermodynamic properties of Al3+(aq) at high temperatures and pressures.

Fahlgren, Madeleine, and Jenny Helgeson. Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2391.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this study was to prepare a management plan for the future nature reserve Helges hage in Eksta, Gotland. The area has a long continuity as a woodland and has been used as pasture and for selective logging. This type of forestry practices creates a dynamic, heterogeneous landscape with a rich biodiversity. In Helges hage many unusual soil fungi and two endangered grass species have been found. Grazed woodlands is one of the habitats that has decreased most in Sweden the last century as a result of the modern forestry. Helges hage has not been grazed since the 1960 and the forest understory is now overgrown by shrubs and saplings. In order to preserve the natural values of a grazed woodland it is required to reintroduce grazing and that parts of the forest is thinned in order to create a less dense forest with more light reaching the ground.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine how Rome understood 'the Other' in the context of Roman plundering of sacred sites. It analyses specifically the Temple of Poseidon at Isthmia, and how it was affected by the destruction of Corinth in 146 BCE, and the second Jewish temple at Jerusalem, and how the Romans went about destroying it in 70 CE. This study combines archaeological and written sources with iconography, to get as full an image as possible of Roman pillaging. For Isthmia the sources are mainly archaeological, from the excavations made by the University of Chicago. For Jerusalem the source is the ancient text Bellum Judaicum, by Flavius Josephus. The theory is that of 'the Other', as presented by Erich Gruen in his work Rethinking the other in antiquity, which is applied to the many questions in the discussion. The result of this study shows that Romans frequently sacked sacred sites of other peoples and used the artworks from them to beautify their own cities. They used the history and tradition of the Other for their own gain, to create a certain image of themselves. Further, this study finds that Rom considered itself the main power in the Mediterranean during these periods of antiquity.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Boender, Alexandra. "The Shrines of Gebel el-Silsila : and their function."

Full text
Abstract:
In 1963 came Ricardo Caminos to the conclusion that the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila functioned as cenotaphs. However, his views have never been reassessed by contemporary Egyptologists, which has led to the shrines still being interpreted as cenotaphs today. This study shows that the term cenotaph perhaps is not the correct word to use for their function. The focal point of this study are the decorations and inscriptions of the shrines, their religious character and the importance of the Nile. The following research compares the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila with similar shrines at Qasr Ibrim in order to reveal their similarities and dissimilarities. In order to achieve this, two publications were chosen, by Caminos, who assessed both sites in the 1960s and briefly compares the Qasr Ibrim shrines to Gebel el-Silsila. Furthermore, the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila resemble tombs in the Theban necropolis, where some of the tombs of the shrine-owners have been uncovered. For this reason, a comparison between the shrines and tombs has been made in order to reveal why the shrines cannot be tombs, and to display why the shrines still are mortuary monuments. Lastly, the following study assessed the shrine-owners in order to answer how the shrines were financed. However, although many of the shrine-owners are well-established noblemen of which several accounts are known, only their titles are taken into account for they provide a principal overview of their status. This has provided the information required to establish how they were financed. It was necessary to make this restriction due to limited amount of available space and was a more elaborate study of the inscriptions and decorations considered of greater importance in order to reveal the religious function of the shrines. The result shows that the shrines were privately financed and that the shrines did not mean to serve has cenotaphs that the family of the deceased could visit to remember him. They were deliberately placed close to the water, even though it would subject them to destruction during the annual inundation of the Nile. The water in relation to the mortuary decorations of the shrines, make the shrines symbolize the underworld and do they not have a practical function

Since 1982, cancer has risen to the first leading cause of death in Taiwan, while the personality traits, health status, and sense of hope play important roles in treatment. Helgeson''s personality types of agency, communion, unmitigated agency, and unmitigated communion has been used for the field of health psychology, this study is therefore to target the cancer patients as research objects and study the relationships among personality traits, sense of hope, and quality of life. At the same time, the researchers also explore the moderating effect of sense of hope on the relationship between personality traits and quality of life. In this study, a questionnaire survey method is used and 144 valid questionnaires were obtained. The results show that there is positive relationship between agency and communion type of personality and quality of life in patients with cancer. The unmitigated agency type and quality of life are negatively correlated. There is no association between unmitigated communion type and quality of life. The sense of hope and quality of life presents a significant positive correlation. The sense of hope shows the moderating effect between communion type and quality of life, while the sense of hope does not display moderating effect between agency, unmitigated agency, as well as unmitigated communion personality and quality of life. People with agency and communion type attache importance to self-care, and are able to maintain well interpersonal boundaries, which contribute to the positive quality of life. Unmitigated agency type characterizes extreme self-confidence and lack of social relationship, which relates to negative quality of life. Unmitigated communion type pays excessive attention on the needs of others and therefore leads to self-neglect, even in poor quality of life, however be in line with social desirability than to show the true internal state. Sense of hope show no moderating effect between three types of personality and quality of life may relate to cultural factors.

Sally Helgesen’s “Web of Inclusion” theory, originated from the network-based management framework developed from female qualities, investigates the traits and the styles exhibited by female leadership. The present study adopts Helgesen’s “Web of Inclusion” theory as the approach of analysis to investigate the organizational leadership of the director of Zinan Temple Management Committee through successful cases of former and current directors of Zinan Temple Management Committee, who were honored by the provincial government with “Charitable Contribution Award” for three consecutive years and received CCA’s “Arts & Business Awards” in 1999 and 2000. This study hopes to outline the leadership characteristics of the temple’s leaders and to compare the findings to Sally Helgesen’s “Web of Inclusion” theory, which was defined from her analyses of several successful female leaders, to understand the feasibility of applying the theoretical “Web of Inclusion” to the studies of non-female leaders of non-profit religious organizations. Following field interviews conducted on relevant members of the organizational network, the present study discovered several major findings as follows by summarizing and analyzing the actual situations: Finding 1 – Although individually possessed with different, innate leadership qualities, for the accomplishment of a task, leaders still demonstrate the “Web of Inclusion” model of operation in the form and in the process of manipulation of power. Finding 2 – A milieu where information is listened to and shared can easily be built under a webby organizational framework. Finding 3 – In a small community organization, people who interact with the central leader, as the “Web of Inclusion” model, would more easily sense the leader’s concern, and therefore, attach more importance to the atmosphere of organizational solidarity. Finding 4 – To a certain extent, the “Web of Inclusion” theory is applicable to male leaders of non-profit organizations. Abstract:
Nation and vernacularity are naturally intertwined, as Adrian Hastings, Richard Helgerson, and Benedict Anderson would attest. Hastings, Helgerson, and Anderson all argue that the rise of nation coincides with a decisively new burgeoning of the vernacular, even as this moment occurs in a different century. This article explores three issues concerning nation that have particular relevance to cross-period “cultural reformations” and are radically affected by England’s long relationship with France: nation’s relation to modernity, to language, and to England and Englishness. It examines the entanglement between English and French in the context of nationhood and considers a bifurcated Anglo-French model for vernacularity that it argues is central to understanding of nation and crucially resistant to it at the same time.

Abstract:
The first chapter begins with an analysis of indirect meaning-making in satire, discussing how allusion, symbol, and analogy can work to create allegorical satirical meanings that invite the reader to project insights from the text to the real world. Chapter 1 explores the literary, natural-historical, symbolic, and allegorical meanings that Spenser’s culture attached to foxes in order to give a sense of the complexity of Spenser’s use of animal imagery to create indirect satire in his most famous satirical character, the Fox of Mother Hubberds Tale. The chapter closes with a sketch of Spenser’s career as a satirist, aiming to create a sense of story and to connect the story of Spenser-as-satirist with better-known discussions of Spenser’s career trajectory from such scholars as Richard Helgerson and Patrick Cheney.

Abstract:
John Helgerson’s tenure began just six weeks before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The terrorist threat had been the subject of major analyses produced during John Gannon’s tenure; it became the overwhelming priority after 9/11. Helgerson describes the early responses as well as the longer-term analyses of the evolving terrorist threat and the new landscape of counterterrorist cooperation with traditional allies and former adversaries alike. The US intervention in Afghanistan to topple the Taliban regime gave way to a new focus on Iraq. The ostensible rationale for the invasion of Iraq was a controversial national intelligence estimate on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Although the NIE was published in the interval between Helgerson’s tenure and his successor’s, the chapter assesses the estimate and the decision to go to war in Iraq through the analysis of National Intelligence Officer Paul Pillar, who straddled both tenures.

Abstract:
The process of evaporation, including transpiration (evaporation from plants), returns to the atmosphere more than half of the water reaching the Earth’s land surface; thus, it plays an important role in controlling the chemistry of surface water and groundwater, especially in relatively arid climates. Geochemists study the evaporation process to understand the evolution of water in desert playas and lakes as well as the origins of evaporite deposits. They also investigate environmental aspects of evaporation (e.g., Appelo and Postma, 1993), such as its effects on the chemistry of rainfall and, in areas where crops are irrigated, the quality of groundwater and runoff. To model the chemical effects of evaporation, we construct a reaction path in which H2O is removed from a solution, thereby progressively concentrating the solutes. We also must account in the model for the exchange of gases such as CO2 and O2 between fluid and atmosphere. In this chapter we construct simulations of this sort, modeling the chemical evolution of water from saline alkaline lakes and the reactions that occur as seawater evaporates to desiccation. We choose as a first example the evaporation of spring water from the Sierra Nevada mountains of California and Nevada, USA, as modeled by Garrels and Mackenzie (1967). Their hand calculation, the first reaction path traced in geochemistry (see Chapter 1), provided the inspiration for Helgeson’s (1968 and later) development of computerized methods for reaction modeling. Garrels and Mackenzie wanted to test whether simple evaporation of groundwater discharging from the mountains, which is the product of the reaction of rainwater and CO2 with igneous rocks, could produce the water compositions found in the saline alkaline lakes of the adjacent California desert. They began with the mean of analyses of perennial springs from the Sierra Nevada (Table 18.1). The springs are Na-Ca-HCO3 waters, rich in dissolved silica.

Bethke, Craig M. "Hydrothermal Fluids." In Geochemical Reaction Modeling. Oxford University Press, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195094756.003.0020.

Abstract:
Hydrothermal fluids, hot groundwaters that circulate within the Earth’s crust, play central roles in many geological processes, including the genesis of a broad variety of ore deposits, the chemical alteration of rocks and sediments, and the origin of hot springs and geothermal fields. Many studies have been devoted to modeling how hydrothermal fluids react chemically as they encounter wall rocks, cool, boil, and mix with other fluids. Such modeling proliferated in part because hydrothermal fluids are highly reactive and because the reaction products are commonly well preserved, readily studied, and likely to be of economic interest. Further impetus was provided by the development of reliable modeling software in the 1970s, a period of concern over the availability of strategic and critical minerals and of heightened interest in economic geology and the exploitation of geothermal energy. As a result, many of the earliest and most imaginative applications of geochemical modeling, beginning with Helgeson’s (1970) simulation of ore deposition in hydrothermal veins and the alteration of nearby country rock, have addressed the reaction of hydrothermal fluids. For example, Reed (1977) considered the origin of a precious metal district; Garven and Freeze (1984), Sverjensky (1984, 1987), and Anderson and Garven (1987) studied the role of sedimentary brines in forming Mississippi Valley-type and other ore deposits; Wolery (1978), Janecky and Seyfried (1984), Bowers et al. (1985), and Janecky and Shanks (1988) simulated hydrothermal interactions along the midocean ridges; and Drummond and Ohmoto (1985) and Spycher and Reed (1988) modeled how fluid boiling is related to ore deposition. In this chapter, we develop geochemical models of two hydrothermal processes: the formation of fluorite veins in the Albigeois ore district and the origin of “black smokers, ” a name given to hydrothermal vents found along the ocean floor at midocean ridges. As a first case study, we borrow from the modeling work of Rowan (1991), who considered the origin of fluorite (CaF2) veins in the Albigeois district of the southwest Massif Central, France. Production and reserves for the district as a whole total about 7 million metric tons, making it comparable to the more famous deposits of southern Illinois and western Kentucky, USA.

Abstract:
There has never been any dispute that the family Suidae, being even-toed ungulates, belong to the Artiodactyla but their position within this order has undergone some revision over the past 10 years. The standard taxonomic arrangement is that of Simpson (1945). Though Simpson’s taxonomic philosophy was explicitly not based on phylogeny, his classification of the Artiodactyla has nonetheless been interpreted as reflecting the general outlines of artiodactyl evolution. This general schema is shown in Fig. 1.1, which is based largely on Thenius (1979), except that Thenius went against the general view by aligning the Tragulidae with the Cervidae. Since the 1970s, there has been a growing consensus that taxonomy should reflect phylogeny as far as possible, and in this context the revolution in the understanding of artiodactyl evolution that took place during the 1990s (summarized by Waddell et al. 1999) has left the taxonomy of the Artiodactyla in some disarray, particularly because it is now clear that the Cetacea (whales and dolphins) are nested deep within it, as a sister group to the hippos. The new phylogenetic understanding is shown in Fig. 1.2, and a new classification is proposed in Table 1.2. Some comments on this new classification follow: • Waddell et al. (1999), in combining the Cetacea with the Artiodactyla, call the combined order Cetartiodactyla. Helgen (2003), however, has argued that, since the Cetacea are actually nested within the artiodactyls, rather than being their sister-group, it is appropriate to continue to use the name Artiodactyla for the order. The pigs therefore continue to be artiodactyls, not cetartiodactyls. • The new names introduced by Waddell et al. (1999) are given no taxonomic rank, and I have given them ranks here. But under the Whippomorpha I have left the two subdivisions, Ancodonta and Cetacea, unranked rather than introduce parvorders and the like. • In Fig. 1.2 I have followed the phylogeny of Hassanin & Douzery (2003), but I have not given names and ranks to all their clades. Even given the turmoil into which the taxonomy of the Artiodactyla has been thrown, still no one disputes that the closest living relatives of the pigs are the peccaries (family Tayassuidae).

"The principle of the MAIEA technique depends on the binding of two antibodies made in different species to different determinants on the same membrane component to form of a tri-molecular complex [4]. Briefly, a murine monoclonal antibody (MAb) and human antibody are incubated simultaneously with red cells. Excess antibody is removed, the sensitized cells are solubilised with Triton, so the tri-molecular complex is released into solution. The complex is detected by an ELISA type assay. The tri-molecular complex is captured by an anti-mouse globulin precoated onto a microtitre plate. The human antibody is then detected by a peroxidase-conjugated anti-human IgG. A positive reaction gives a high absorbance value and a negative reaction gives a low absorbance value. A negative result is obtained when the antibodies used bind to different membrane components, so no tri-molecular complex is formed. A negative result is also obtained when the monoclonal antibody and human antibody compete for the same epitope. Results can be represented as ratios of absorbances for antigen positive to antigen negative cells or as bar charts. In these studies a murine anti-CR1 (E11) and human anti-Kna and other Knops system antibodies were used against antigen positive and antigen negative cells. Absorbances for antigen positive cells with anti-Kna, anti-McCa anti-Sla and anti-Yka were high and results for the antigen-negative cells were low [8]. Comparison of chymotrypsin treated Kn(a+) cells with Kn(a-) cells showed that chymotrypsin did indeed destroy Kna antigen; chymotrypsin treated cells, therefore, were suitable cells to use as antigen negative cells when cells of rare phenotype were not available [8]. These reactions gave significantly positive ratios (Table I). In contrast, low absorbances were recorded for Cs(a+) and Cs(a-) cells with anti-Csa, the 1:1 ratio indicating a negative result (Table I). Serologically the Helgeson phenotype cells have a Knops null phenotype, all 4 antigens are negative but the antigens could be detected by flow cytometry and in immune precipitation [6,7]. Moulds and colleagues provided an explanation for this when they found that such cells did not completely lack CR1 but had a low copy number of CR1 molecules per cell [9]. Had it not been known already, the presence of Knops system antigens on Helgeson phenotype cells could have been deduced from the MAIEA results. The absorbance values for Helgeson phenotype cells were significantly higher than for antigen negative cells for Kna, McCa and Yka [8]. MAIEA has confirmed that Kna, McCa, Sla and Yka but not Csa are associated with the CR1 molecule in the red cell membrane and can detect weak expression of CR1 antigens on Helgeson phenotype cells [8]. MAIEA is useful for investigating problem antibodies suspected to be Knops system antibodies and can also be used to Knops phenotype cells with poor expression of Knops system antigens." "roles of carrier proteins. The identification and usefulness of blood group antigens as markers will be described and possible explanations for their variation in expression will be discussed. Most red cell antigens have been investigated because they are clinically important [1]. The antibodies to some antigens have caused haemolytic disease of the newborn and/or transfusion reactions. Other antigens are involved in haemolytic anaemia and some are important in transplantation. Red cell antigens provided a tool for investigation of the red cell surface and for use as genetic, immunological and biochemical markers. More than 500 red cell antigens are serologically defined, about half of which have been officially recognised and have been numbered by the International Society of Blood Transfusion Working Party on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens [2,3]. Antigens are divided into systems (antigens controlled by a locus or closely linked loci) and three holding files: collections (related antigens whose genetic relationship is unknown), antigens of high incidence or antigens of low incidence. THE MAIEA TECHNIQUE Sometimes if an antigen has a very high or a very low incidence it is hard to relate it to other antigens or to assign it to a system. Immunochemical studies and in the case of high incidence antigens, use of cells of rare phenotype can be informative and recently the MAIEA technique, monoclonal antibody specific immobilisation of erythrocyte antigens, has proved useful. MAIEA was an adaptation of a technique, MAIPA, frequently used for studying platelets. MAIEA can be used to assign red cells antigens, as recognised by human alloantisera, to particular components of the red cell membrane [4]. Location of antigens on specific red cell membrane components The Knops system consists of 4 high incidence antigens Kna, McCa, Sla and Yka with frequencies greater than 90% in populations tested. There is also a low incidence antigen Knb found in Whites [3]. The antibodies to these public antigens are difficult to identify serologically. The antigens show a wide variation of strength on different donor’s cells. There is a null phenotype, the Helgeson phenotype, which appears from serological tests to lack all 4 antigens [5]. Cells which lack one Knops antigen may have weakened expression of other Knops antigens. The mists about these serologically difficult antigens were cleared when Moulds et al [6] and Rao et al [7] independently showed that these antigens were carried on the CR1 (complement receptor 1, CD35) protein. The related antigen Csa was not located on CR1, so Csa and Csb were left in the Cost collection [3]." In Transfusion Immunology and Medicine, 188.
