Abstract:
This paper focuses on the Hellenistic Middle East, especially the age of Ptolemaic Alexandrian and Syrian Seleucid influence. It investigates and clarifies some of the Hellenistic-age historical and archaeological material culture within the Hellenisation and globalisation conceptions. Furthermore, it suggests that by reviewing the context of the local socio-cultural identities in the Hellenistic Oikoumene, mainly based on the lingua franca about local identity and how the local identity was expressed on coinage during Hellenistic times, many related insights issues can be revealed. This paper examines the nature and extent of changes in landscapes, societies, and economies in the numerous city-states of the Peloponnese under Macedonian domination (338–196 BC). Emigration and warfare may have had limited and short-term impacts. While Macedonian rule may have been oppressive before and after the Chremonidean war, it did not necessarily disrupt local economies and politics. The Antigonids did not run the Peloponnese as a province, and were concerned mainly with security. Though the building of towns and forts declined, and some cities were abandoned or lost freedom at times

Abstract:
Grapevine and olive are thought to have been intensively cultivated during the Hellenistic period, as part of an agrarian system which included agricultural choices specializing in the production of their secondary products. The discovery of large assemblages of carbonized grapes and olives at three sites in Pieria, Macedonia, Greece, provides a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of grape and olive cultivation, the production of wine and olive oil, and their position in the agricultural regimes in this region of Greece. In this paper, we report on morphometric analyses performed o

Since its appearance, Antioch has become one of the most important cities. It was the capital of the Seleucid Empire, and after its conquest by the Romans, Antioch became the capital of the province of Syria. Antioch had Greeks, Athenians, Macedonians, Cretans and Cypriots as its first settlers. They imprinted a Greek tradition on the city, as it was at a crossroads of civilizations, peoples and languages. In a short time, Antioch managed to reach a high spiritual and commercial peak, being among the most important centres of Hellenism in the East, thus rivalling with Alexandria. Antioch also

Abstract:
This paper investigates the applicability of the phenomenological approach articulated by the Nineteenth Century German architectural theoretician Gottfried Semper (1803–79) of ―Cladding as the origin of architecture‖, to understand the surface design of Hellenistic Macedonian tomb architecture. The phenomenological approach to dematerialization in surface design, introduced by Semper, has never been investigated and studied in Hellenistic architecture. Based on Semper criteria, the study argues that Hellenistic architecture of the Macedonian tombs demonstrated a distinctive conceptual f

This article is concerned with the particular case of the semi-cylindrical barrel vaulted Macedonian tomb of "Eurydice", the earliest known Macedonian contribution to the development of vaulted Hellenistic architecture and structure. This tomb is considered as a critical case in the problematic chronology of barrel vault application in early Hellenistic architecture (around 340 BCE), represented by the Macedonian tombs. Still, perhaps the most striking features of the tomb– the physical structures of the barrel vault – have not been subjected to geometrical and engineerin
