Abstract:
SUMMARYSoil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) is a scourge to the health and well-being of infants and pre-schoolchildren throughout many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. To improve maternal and child health, regular de-worming is recommended and often delivered from mother and child health (MCH) clinics, yet there have been few studies monitoring the progress and impact of interventions on local levels of disease. A cross-sectional parasitological survey, supplemented with questionnaires, was therefore conducted across 10 Ungujan villages examining mothers (n=322) and their pre-school children (n=3

Helminthiasis is a disease that occurs in the population in the tropics and subtropics area. One of the helminthiasis in humans is Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH). The prevalence of this disease is still to be a concern because the prevalence is quite high in children that is no exception in the children aged 1-5 years. The factors causing helminthiasis are included behavioral and environmental factors. This study aims to determine the factors that are related to STH helminthiasis incidence among others, the habit of washing hand of mothers, the habit of wearing footwear, the cleanliness of mot

Introduction: Infection by human immunodeficiency virus results in immune destruction, while studies among the Ethiopian immigrants in Israel showed that chronic helminthiasis induces immune dysregulation. With destruction of CD4+ cell and consequently progression to AIDS, the host may be more susceptible to invading organisms such as helminths. This study was aimed at determining the effect of immune state on the prevalence and intensity of helminth infection in HIV infected children in two hospitals in Abakaliki.Material and Methods: It was a cross sectional study that involved consecutive r

Introduction: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) is one of the neglected tropical diseases. These worm infections contributed to global child health. Children suffer from chronic disease and fail to reach their full physical and intellectual capacity. Antihelmintic treatment or deworming is recommended for controlling STH. World Health Organization is focusing predominantly on deworming school-age children. Even antihelmintic treatment has to be repeated regularly, children can reinfect if their environment contaminated. It needs a strategy to control STH and treating adults as well as a chi

AbstractTo ascertain the current status of strongyloidiasis in mothers and their preschool children, a field-based survey was conducted in western Uganda using a combination of diagnostic methods: ELISA, Baermann concentration and Koga agar plate. The prevalence of other soil-transmitted helminthiasis and intestinal schistosomiasis were also determined. In total, 158 mothers and 143 children were examined from five villages within Kabale, Hoima and Masindi districts. In mothers and children, the general prevalence of strongyloidiasis inferred by ELISA was ~4% and ~2%, respectively. Using the B

Background: Morbidity due to Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections can be controlled at a reasonable cost by means of mass deworming using effective drugs. Deworming campaigns targeted at high risk groups, such as school-age children, pre-school children and women of child-bearing age are the mainstay of the control strategy launched by WHO. Methods: A small sector was surveyed on the National Deworming Day (NDD) to record the percentage coverage of children in pre-school and school going children. Children were observed for any of the adverse effects within 24 hrs of taking Albendazole.
