Abstract:
Abstract To be able to predict habitat quality and potential distribution of threatened species is key to developing successful conservation strategies for threatened species with fragmented distributions. The aim of this study was to assess factors that limit the local distribution and density of Lycaena helle, an endangered butterfly, in central Sweden, and to estimate its mobility in order to classify local populations according to their importance for the connectivity on a regional level. An additional aim was to test if L. helle habitat quality could be assessed using remotely-sensed data such as laser scanning (LiDAR). We derived potential predictors of L. helle occurrence from laser scanning data and used a resource selection function to assess their predictive power. We used a mark-recapture approach to study L. helle movement and estimate dispersal distances. The probability of occurrence of L. helle increased with higher solar irradiation and was negatively affected by sloping terrain, but the LiDAR data generally had low predictive power. Population density increased with host plant density, but this effect was weak. The mark-recapture study confirmed that L. helle is very sedentary, with a mean movement distance of only 114 m and a maximum of 600 m. The studied population extends over a large network of interconnected linear habitats, which probably facilitates dispersal and thereby population persistence. Our study highlight the importance of a warm micro-climate and of man-made habitats like road verges and power-line corridors for the conservation of L. helle.

Full text
Abstract:
The McCartney Mountain salient is a distinct convex-east segment of the Sevier fold-and-thrust belt in southwest Montana, lying east of the Pioneer batholith and west of basement-cored Laramide uplifts. Prominent features of the central part of the salient include the in-sequence Sandy Hollow thrust fault (displacing Permian over Lower Cretaceous strata), and hanging wall and footwall syncline-anticline pairs that display complex intra-formational duplexes and parasitic detachment folds at all scales. Cleavage occurs in the argillaceous carbonate members of the Cretaceous Kootenai and Triassic Dinwoody formations throughout the area. Cleavage has been systematically mapped and characterized according to morphology, domainal spacing and orientation for all exposed outcrops of a distinctive yellowish dolomitic unit in the lower limestone member of the Kootenai. Cleavage within this unit exhibits planar morphology with domainal spacing at the mm-cm scale, classified as moderate to very strong spaced cleavage. Structural orientation data divides the cleavage into two populations. S1 is defined by cleavage that trends N-S, dips east, and is inferred to be reoriented axial planar cleavage that may have been modified during late-stage shortening as the frontal fold-and-thrust system impinged against basement uplifts in the foreland. S2 is recognized by E-W striking cleavage that dips within 10° of vertical, cross cutting hanging wall, and footwall folds in the area. S2 is inferred to have formed during the final stages of deformation in the Sandy Hollow fold-and-thrust system. S2 may reflect N-S shortening caused by lateral forces along the salient boundary as the fold-and-thrust system propagated eastward into the salient nose.

Abstract:
Abstract Computational modeling provides significant benefits in assessing the helmet performance and identifying promising helmet designs. We develop multi-fidelity computational tools, representative virtual human head and helmet system models to help the design of next generation combat helmet with improved protection against blunt impact. By integrating the fast-running articulated human with personal protective equipment (PPE) biodynamics model with the high-fidelity human head with combat helmet finite element (FE) model, the multi-fidelity approach can be used to efficiently investigate impact-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the real-world scenario. The FE model is used to capture the dynamics of the composite helmet shell, foam pad suspension, retention strap and head while the biodynamics model provides the proper kinematics and boundary conditions for the FE model. An orthotropic elasto-plastic material with damage model is employed for the helmet shell. Enhanced tetrahedral elements are used to model the nearly-incompressible tissues. The head with helmet and without helmet under a severe impact due to a fall caused by blast loading are simulated and compared. The resulting biomechanical responses of head acceleration, shear stresses and strains in brain and mechanical injury criterion as well as helmet energy absorption are used to characterize the performance of helmet system.

Abstract:
Combat helmet protection zone parametric design is presented for small arms and explosive device ballistic threat notional spatial distributions. The analysis is conducted using a computer aided design software application developed to evaluate ballistic threats, helmet design parameters, and a standard set of common brain injuries associated with head impacts. The analysis helps to define the helmet trade space, facilitates prototyping, and supports helmet design optimization. Direct head impacts and helmet impacts, with and without helmet back face contact to the head, are tabulated. Head strikes are assumed to produce critical or fatal penetrating injuries. Helmet back face deflections and impact generated projectile-helmet-head motions are determined. Helmet impact obliquity is accounted for by attenuating back face deflection. Head injury estimates for ten common focal and diffuse head injuries are determined from the back face deflections and the head injury criteria. These, in turn, are related to the abbreviated injury score and associated radiographic dimensional diagnostic criteria and loss of consciousness diagnostic criteria from the trauma literature.

Abstract:
In 2003, a study was conducted to analyze brain-related fatalities in American football. From 1945–1999 a total of 497 fatalities were brain injury-related. Majority of the injuries, 61%, occurred during the football game, and “75% of these were high school players.” The number of high school students was more than 13 times greater than the number of college and professional players combined [1]. While millions of high school students will never make it to the next lever; collegiate and professional players have brought the attention needed to the make advances in the field of helmet design. Further, a study conducted by Bartsch et al. showed that the 20 th and 21 st century football helmet and the “leatherhead” helmets are very similar in their concussion-resistant and shock-mitigating capabilities [2]. In the past few decades, improvements in the helmet design have not addressed shock wave mitigation but rather focused on the strength, durability, and “looks” of the helmet. A major issue stems from the lack of thorough knowledge of the biomechanics and physics of traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to helmet-to-helmet contacts. The current study proposes to an in-depth finite element analysis (FEA) of the helmet-to-helmet collision. The finite element (FE) model consists of a human head clad with helmet with simulations being performed using ABAQUS/Explicit [3]. Here, Helmet-to-helmet impacts will be analyzed to develop a new head injury metric that captures the locational and history effects of the impending shock wave due to collision.

Full text
Abstract:
The effects of combat helmet pad suspension components on explosive device ballistic impact on the helmet shell are determined for four helmet geometric designs with and without pad suspension systems. Finite element analysis of a flat panel test article is used to generate back face deflection (BFD) data as a function of impact obliquity to be input into a computer aided design (CAD) software application. The CAD software is used to evaluate omni-directional ballistic impacts to the helmet using one dimensional equations of motion. The BFD and acceleration results of the CAD software analysis are used to determine a head injury criteria and abbreviated injury score (AIS). The AIS is related to ten focal and diffuse head injuries from trauma literature. The attenuation of helmet back face deflections and projectile deceleration for over-pad impacts compared to between-pad impacts translates into reduced injury predictions. The analysis quantifies these effects and helps to define the helmet trade space, facilitate prototyping, and support helmet design optimization.

Abstract:
Observed head injury has historically been mechanically related to headform center of gravity (CG) acceleration. Helmets (motorcycle, sports, military, etc.) are evaluated based on the headform CG peak acceleration for blunt impacts. However, recent interest has shifted to collecting data from the helmet shell itself, as it is an optimal location for mounting sensors due to ease of access, sufficient surface area availability, and limited interference to the wearer. In order to accurately predict head injury from data collected on the helmet shell, the helmet and headform must be rigidly coupled. Headform-helmet fit typically is dependent on the pad fitting system and the person mounting the helmet to the headform because a standard states which headform to use. The objective of this study is to compare the Department of Transportation (DOT) headform (currently used in military blunt impact testing) to the more anthropomorphic International Standard Organization (ISO) half headform. Testing was completed on a monorail drop tower to analyze the effect of helmet/headform coupling on the blunt impact behavior of ACH helmets using FMVSS test methodology. Three headform configurations were used: the DOT headform (standard for military helmet blunt impact testing) with required surrogate chin, the ISO half headform (standard for ASTM helmet testing), and the ISO half headform with a surrogate chin. The two currently field-approved pad types were also used to determine best headform-helmet fit. Results from these series of tests will be presented, including headform peak acceleration and relative motion between the helmet and headform.

Abstract:
In California, bike fatalities increased by 8.1% from 2015 to 2016. Even though the benefits of wearing helmets in protecting cyclists against trauma in cycling crash has been determined, the use of helmets is still limited, and there is opposition against mandatory helmet use, particularly for adults. Therefore, exploring perceptions of adult cyclists regarding mandatory helmet use is a key element in understanding cyclists’ behavior, and determining the impact of mandatory helmet use on their cycling rate. The goal of this research is to identify sociodemographic characteristics and cycling behaviors that are associated with the use and non-use of bicycle helmets among adults, and to assess if the enforcement of a bicycle helmet law will result in a change in cycling rates. This research develops hybrid machine learning models to pinpoint the driving factors that explain adult cyclists’ behavior regarding helmet use laws.
