Abstract:
Had Elizabeth "Bess" Clements Abell (1933–2020) been a boy, she would likely have become a politician like her father, Earle C. Clements. Effectively barred from office because of her gender, she forged her own path by helping family friends Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson. Abell's Secret Service code name, "Iron Butterfly," exemplified her graceful but firm management of social life in the Johnson White House. After Johnson's administration ended, she maintained her importance in Washington, DC, serving as chief of staff to Joan Mondale and cofounding a public relations company. Donald A. Ritchie and Terry L. Birdwhistell draw on Abell's own words and those of others known to her to tell her remarkable story. Focusing on her years working for the Johnson campaign and her time in the White House, this engaging oral history provides a window into Abell's life as well as an insider's view of the nation's capital during the tumultuous 1960s.

Abstract:
While the Revolution gave Jenkins a few scares, including almost being shot by a firing squad, it allowed him to quintuple his fortune. When rebels loyal to Emiliano Zapata withdrew from Puebla, they briefly used Jenkins’s mill as a fort. Charged with complicity, Jenkins was hauled off by federal troops, but Álvaro Obregón intervened to save him. The incident heightened Jenkins’s disdain for the Revolution, and he dispatched Mary to California. But he kept his mills running and was one of the first textile barons to give his company joint-stock, limited-liability status. His chief wartime success was in property trading. He converted his dollars into the devalued peso and snapped up assets for a song. His success illustrates how a new entrepreneurial class used the era’s turmoil to their advantage. Helping make such purchases possible was Jenkins’s ability to ingratiate himself with certain Puebla elites and his willingness to bribe officials.

Thierauf, Robert J. Effective Business Intelligence Systems. Praeger, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400644160.

Full text
Abstract:
One step above knowledge management systems are business intelligence systems. Their purpose is to give decision makers a better understanding of their organization's operations, and thus another way to outmaneuver the competition, by helping to find and extract the meaningful relationships, trends, and correlations that underlie the organization's operations and ultimately contribute to its success. Thierauf also shows that by tying critical success factors and key performance indicators into business intelligence systems, an organization's most important financial ratios can also be improved. Comprehensive and readable, Thierauf's book will advance the knowledge and skills of all information systems providers and users. It will also be useful as a text in upper-level courses covering a wide range of topics essential to an understanding of executive business systems generally, and specifically their creation and management. The theme underlying Thierauf's unique text is that a thorough understanding of a company's operations is crucial if the company is to be moved to a higher level of competitive advantage. Although data warehousing, data mining, the Internet, the World Wide Web, and other electronic aids have been in place for at least a decade, it is the remarkable and unique capability of business intelligence systems to utilize them that has in turn revolutionized the ability of decision makers to find, accumulate, organize, and access a wider range of information than was ever before possible. Effective business intelligence systems give decision makers a means to keep their fingers on the pulse of their businesses every step of the way. From this it follows that they are thus able to develop new, more workable means to cope with the competition successfully. Comprehensive and readable, Thierauf's book will advance the knowledge and skills of all information systems providers and users. It will also be useful as a text in upper-level courses covering a wide range of topics essential to an understanding of executive business systems generally, and specifically their creation and management.

Abstract:
This book provides easy-to-understand, scientifically backed answers to readers' questions about essential oils, helping them make informed decisions about which products to use and how and setting realistic expectations about what essential oils can and cannot do to improve well-being. Many people use essential oils regularly yet know very little about them. What exactly makes them "essential"? Can they really be used to treat ailments like infections, fevers, and sore throats? Is it safe to ingest them or use them around children and pets? How can you tell if a company selling essential oils is offering a low-quality product or engaging in shady business practices? This book answers these and many more questions about these popular yet often poorly understood products. Books in Greenwood's Q&A Health Guides series follow a reader-friendly question-and-answer format that anticipates readers' needs and concerns. Prevalent myths and misconceptions are identified and dispelled, and a collection of case studies illustrate key concepts and issues through relatable stories and insightful recommendations. Each book also includes a section on health literacy, equipping teens and young adults with practical tools and strategies for finding, evaluating, and using credible sources of health information both on and off the internet–important skills that contribute to a lifetime of healthy decision-making.

Louis, Wm Roger. The End of the British Empire in the Middle East, 1952—1971. Oxford University PressOxford, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198201977.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract In the 1950s it seemed to the world at large that the British Empire was in a state of terminal decline, not least after the catastrophic setback of the Suez crisis in October 1956. The British, along with the French and Israelis, launched a futile attack on Egypt in response to Gamal Abdel Nasser’s nationalization of the Suez Canal Company. The phrase ‘Suez crisis’ became a byword for illusion and self-deception. The British increasingly believed that the Americans aimed to replace them in the Middle East. The Anglo-American ‘special relationship’ was tested also by the US officials’ fixation on Communism, often to the exclusion of other considerations. The Arabs believed that the British could not be trusted, not least for helping create the State of Israel. At the United Nations the British were reviled by anti-colonialists as renegades. During the 1967 war between the Arab states and Israel, the Arabs mistakenly assumed that the British had assisted Israel. As the pace of decolonization quickened globally, Britain’s decisions in the Middle East were ultimately driven by economic considerations at home and the need to maintain oil supplies from the region. Despite everything, many former subjects believed that British rule or influence in the Middle East, and indeed throughout the world, had provided a lasting example of a stable and civilized way of life.

Harris, GLA. Blacks in the Military and Beyond. Lexington Books, 2019. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666986266.

Full text
Abstract:
African Americans have long used the military for gaining legitimacy and as the ultimate path to citizenship. Blacks in the Military and Beyond thoughtfully chronicles their tumultuous journey from slavery through the present, extending the ourstory to pre-service, in service and post-service economic considerations as significant factors in determining whether or not serving in the military has advantaged Blacks, and how such mechanisms like the periodic drawing down of forces have impacted Blacks overall. G.L.A. Harris and Evelyn L. Lewis delve into the role of the military as a conduit in helping to create and sustain the Black middle class, challenging the military to be more strategic as to the long term effects of its decisions to be ever mindful of upholding its moral compact with African Americans.

Birch, Jonathan. Hamilton’s Rule as an Organizing Framework. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198733058.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Queller’s version of Hamilton’s rule (HRG), derived from the Price equation, states that the mean breeding value for a social character increases if and only if rb > c, where r is the coefficient of relatedness between social partners, b is the benefit conferred on recipients, and c is the cost incurred by actors. The value of HRG lies in its ability to provide an organizing framework for social evolution theory, helping us to interpret, classify, and compare more detailed models of particular scenarios. HRG does this by allowing us to classify causal explanations of positive change by their commitments regarding the sign of rb and c. This leads to a four-part taxonomy of explanations, comprising indirect fitness explanations, direct fitness explanations, hybrid explanations, and wholly or partially non-selective explanations. There are plausible instances of all four categories in the natural world.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on how the development of volunteerism among young adults in Asia has grown in the past decade. A boom in the development of volunteer work in some Asian countries has been observed since the beginning of the 21st century. We compare the prevalence and characteristics of volunteerism among young adults in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea. The participation in general is sporadic rather than marking a long-term commitment among volunteers. We argue that to develop young adults’ volunteering in Asian context, the participation should be matched with young adults’ developmental issues. The volunteering opportunity should be job-related. More young adults would be interested in volunteering if it can contribute to an enhanced worldview formation and the generation of friendship or even romantic relationships. We also argue that the Asian cultural beliefs of family-centered collectivism may be a hindrance for helping nonfamily out-groups. Methods of enhancing participation are discussed.

Brock, Fred V., and Scott J. Richardson. Meteorological Measurement Systems. Oxford University Press, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195134513.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book treats instrumentation used in meteorological surface systems, both on the synoptic scale and the mesoscale, and the instrumentation used in upper air soundings. The text includes material on first- and second-order differential equations as applied to instrument dynamic performance, and required solutions are developed. Sensor physics are emphasized in order to explain how sensors work and to explore the strengths and weaknesses of each design type. The book is organized according to sensor type and function (temperature, humidity, and wind sensors, for example), though several unifying themes are developed for each sensor. Functional diagrams are used to portray sensors as a set of logical functions, and static sensitivity is derived from a sensor's transfer equation, focusing attention on sensor physics and on ways in which particular designs might be improved. Sensor performance specifications are explored, helping to compare various instruments and to tell users what to expect as a reasonable level of performance. Finally, the text examines the critical area of environmental exposure of instruments. In a well-designed, properly installed, and well-maintained meteorological measurement system, exposure problems are usually the largest source of error, making this chapter one of the most useful sections of the book.

Tran, Thanh V., and Keith T. Chan. Applied Cross-Cultural Data Analysis for Social Work. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190888510.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Applied Cross-Cultural Data Analysis for Social Work is a research guide which provides a hands-on approach for learning and understanding data analysis techniques for examining and interpreting data for the purpose of cultural group comparisons. This book aims to provide practical applications in statistical approaches of data analyses that are commonly used in cross-cultural research and evaluation. Readers are presented with step-by-step illustrations in the use of descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate statistics to compare cross-cultural populations using large-scale, population-based survey data. These techniques have important applications in health, mental health, and social science research relevant to social work and other helping professions, especially in providing a framework of evidence to examine health disparities using population-health data. For each statistical approach discussed in this book, we explain the underlying purpose, basic assumptions, types of variables, application of the Stata statistical package, the presentation of statistical findings, and the interpretation of results. Unlike previous guides on statistical approaches and data analysis in social work, this book explains and demonstrates the strategies of cross-cultural data analysis using descriptive and bivariate analysis, multiple regression, additive and multiplicative interaction, mediation, and SEM and HLM for subgroup analysis and cross-cultural comparisons. This book also includes sample syntax from Stata for social work researchers to conduct cross-cultural analysis with their own research.

Markowitz, John C. Brief Supportive Psychotherapy. Oxford University PressNew York, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780197635803.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Supportive psychotherapy is widely practiced but poorly defined, often misunderstood, and unfairly disparaged. Dr. Markowitz and his colleagues manualized Brief Supportive Psychotherapy (BSP) years ago as a time-limited control treatment to compare to “more active” established psychotherapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy in research studies. In fact, BSP, an emotion-focused, bare-bones treatment based on Carl Rogers’s Client-Centered Therapy, has since proven to be a robust treatment in multiple randomized controlled treatment trials. It has generally kept pace with the brand-name treatments in treating patients with difficult disorders like chronic depression. It deserves a place among evidence-based treatments in depression treatment guidelines. Some therapists previously trained in cognitive and behavioral approaches have found this affect-focused approach adds a new dimension to their thinking and to patients’ lives. This book is both an elaboration of the now well-tested research treatment manual for BSP and a primer for clinicians. It illustrates how BSP helps patients with mood and anxiety disorders to tolerate rather than avoid their powerful negative emotions. It describes the key elements of supportive psychotherapy, covering the crucial “common factors” that help make all evidence-based psychotherapies effective (e.g., affective arousal, helping the patient to feel understood, realistic optimism for improvement, a therapeutic ritual, clinical poise, and success experiences). BSP maximizes patient autonomy, letting the patient lead sessions, and prescribes no homework. It is an elemental, relatively simple approach for a psychotherapy, yet no psychotherapy is easy to do well. Its affect-focused approach enhances the application of all psychotherapeutic approaches.
