BACKGROUND: Acquired organ system derangements are common among patients who require intensive care, but the relative importance of different derangements as determinants of patients' outcomes is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine organ system derangements that occur in patients who require intensive care and the relative importance of different derangements to hospital mortality. METHODS: A prospective cohort study design was used to evaluate the occurrence of organ system derangements and hospital mortality in 617 adults admitted to the medical and surgical intensive care units of a universit

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) which rapidly evolved from an outbreak in Wuhan, China into a pandemic that has resulted in over millions of infections and over hundreds of thousands of mortalities worldwide. Various coagulopathies have been reported in association with COVID-19, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC), local microthrombi, venous thromboembolism (VTE), arterial thrombotic complications, and thrombo-inflammation.

Abstract:
The physical process of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) results in derangement of the hemostatic mechanism, which may lead to increased morbidity, secondary to the disease process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hematological status of neonates undergoing ECMO therapy, and to evaluate coagulation tests in predicting hemorrhagic risk. Following Institutional Review Board approval, 30 patients undergoing ECMO treatment were retrospectively entered into this study. Medical records were reviewed and indicators of hemostasis, transfusion, morbidity, and outcomes recorded.

The purpose of this paper is to collect and summarize all evidences relating to an association between ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAVs) and hematologic malignancies, in the form of either a paraneoplastic vasculitis or leukemias and lymphomas developing on a preexisting vasculitis. Additionally, the role of cyclophosphamide in vasculitis treatment has been assessed and compared to rituximab. Paraneoplastic AAV seems to be an uncommon presentation of hemopathies. Hematologic malignancy risk in AAV is more likely to be increased by cyclophosphamide, although not yet definitely proven. Further

Abstract:
Tumor lysis syndrome is a serious and sometimes lethal complication of cancer treatment that is comprised of a set of metabolic disturbances along with clinical manifestations. Initiating chemotherapy in bulky, rapidly proliferating tumors causes rapid cell turnover that in turn releases metabolites into circulation that give rise to metabolic derangements that can be dangerous. This syndrome is usually seen in high-grade hematological malignancies. Less commonly, tumor lysis syndrome can present in solid tumors and even rarely in genitourinary tumors. Malaria infection is recognized as a severe public health problem linked to most cases of morbidity and mortality in malaria endemic areas. The study was used to determine the hematological derangement of plasmodium falciparum among sickle cell anaemia patients in Taraba state. The study employed a community and laboratory based cross sectional study. The findings shows that malaria infection was highest in the southern senatorial zone (29.1%) than in the north and central zones (p<0.05). Infection was high with the males (21.2%), age-related malaria infection was significant (p<0.05) wi

Abstract Among the many complications of oncologic patients in acute care medicine are the metabolic and hematologic derangements of tumor lysis syndrome, hyperviscosity syndrome, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. While laboratory values are key characteristics in these disorders, clinical presentation drives the diagnostic and therapeutic workup. Disseminated intravascular coagulation is often marked by dramatic coagulopathy treated with supportive care, blood product replacement, and treatment of the precipitating event. Hyperviscosity syndrome may present variably often with neuro
