ได้นำรอบโรคบนใบหน้าและเปลือกตาของนกพิราบมาตรวจทางจุลพยาธิวิทยา และแยกเชื้อไวรัสบน chorio-allantonic membrance ของไข่ไก่ฟัา การตรวจทางจุลพยาธิวิทยาภายหลังการย้อมสี hematoxylin และ eosin พบว่าเซลล์ที่รอยโรคที่เพิ่มจำนวนหนาตัวขึ้น บวม และมีการเสื่อมบวมพองเป็นบอลลูน ภายในซัยโตปลาสมมีอินคลูชั่นบอีดขนาดใหญ่ ติดสีแดง การแยกเชื้อไวรัสบน chorio-allantonic membrane ของไข่ฟักพบ pock สีขาวจำนวนมากขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 3-5 มิลลิเมตร การตรวจทางจุลทรรศน์ อิเล็กตรอน แสดงอนุภาคไวรัสพร้อมกับมี core ตรงกลางลักษณะดัมเบลล์ lateral body และ outer membrane ซึ่งแสดงถึงลักษณะเฉพาะของไวรัสพ็อคซ

แย้เป็นสัตว์เลื้อยคลานรูปร่างคล้ายกิ้งก่า ที่มีความสำคัญทั้งด้านการเป็นแหล่งอาหารโปรตีนของคน โดยเฉพาะทางภาคอีสานของประเทศไทย และด้านการเป็นผู้ควบคุมประชากรของแมลงในระบบนิเวศ แต่ในปัจจุบันประชากรแย้ที่พบในธรรมชาติของประเทศไทยมีจำนวนลดลงไปมาก การเพาะเลี้ยงแย้เพื่อการอนุรักษ์จึงเป็นแนวทางหนึ่งในการรักษาขนาดประชากรแย้ไว้ ซึ่งในการดำเนินการดังกล่าวจำเป็นต้องอาศัยข้อมูลด้านชีววิทยาการสืบพันธุ์ งานวิจัยนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวงสืบพันธุ์ของแย้ Leiolepis belliana belliana โดยพิจารณาจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงน้ำหนักอวัยวะสร้างเซลล์สืบพันธุ์ที่สัมพันธ์กับน้ำหนักตัว (gonado-somatic index, GSI) การเปลี่ยนแปล
