Abstract:
Modifications in oxygen consumption and luminescence of isolated luminescent organs of the mesopelagic fish Argyropelecus hemigymnus following glucose and pyruvate administration were studied before and during light emission triggered by adrenaline. Isolated photophores (mean fresh weight 13.5 ± 0.9 mg) at rest, i.e., in the absence of light emission, in saline (20 °C) exhibit a respiration rate of 1.045 ± 0.082 (SE) nmol O2/min (n = 35). A significant decrease (p = 0.05) in oxygen consumption was observed after the addition of 5.5 mM glucose. Instead of the oxygen decrease usually observed as

Abstract:
The labrid fish genus Hemigymnus Günther consists of three relatively large coral-reef species: the wide-ranging Indo-Pacific H. fasciatus (Bloch) and H. melapterus (Bloch), and H. sexfasciatus (Rüppell) of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, usually regarded as a synonym of H. fasciatus. It is treated here as a species, distinguished by color pattern, longer pelvic fins of the terminal male, and fewer gill rakers. These three fishes are generally found as solitary individuals over sand or sand-and-rubble substrata adjacent to sheltered coral reefs within the depth range of 1–30 m. Their principal m

Mesopelagic fishes hold an important position in marine food webs, serving as a link between lower trophic levels and top predators and transferring energy from their deep mesopelagic habitat to shallower oceanic layers. Despite their ecological importance, research on mesopelagic fishes’ diet and feeding habits in the Mediterranean Sea is far from thorough. The present work attempts to assess the preying patterns and diet composition of four myctophid (Benthosema glaciale, Ceratoscopelus maderensis, Myctophum punctatum, Notoscopelus elongatus) and two sternoptychid (Argyropelecus hemigymnus,

Recent pelagic and benthic trawling activities over the Brazilian continental slope between 11° and 23°S captured nine species representing five genera of the stomiiform family Sternoptychidae. Among these, three species are new records for Brazilian waters: Sternoptyx pseudodiaphana, Argyripnus atlanticus, and Polyipnus sp. The known distributions of Argyropelecus aculeatus and Maurolicus stehmanni along the Brazilian coast are extended northward to 13°S and 16°S, respectively, while that of Sternoptyx diaphana is extended southward to 13°S. In the presence of 5 × 10−4 moll−1 adrenalin the preparations that responded by a long-lasting luminescence showed a significant decrease of their resting respiration rate. After the adrenalin had been washed out, oxygen consumption increased immediately to the previous resting level and was inhibited by 5 × 10−4moll−1 KCN. 3. Methods for sampling ectoparasite assemblages were compared using 7 species of coral reef fishes (Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Thalassoma lunare, Ctenochaetus striatus, Chlorurus sordidus, Scolopsis bilineatus, Hemigymnus melapterus, and Siganus doliatus). Estimates of total numbers and composition of ectoparasites were dependent on post-collection handling techniques and the method of ectoparasite removal. Fish were enclosed within plastic bags under water at the point of capture. Filtration of water from the plastic bags revealed a large number of parasites (mainly gnathiid isopods) that had
