Puumala hantavirus (PUUV), carried and spread by the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), causes a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) called nephropathia epidemica (NE). Acute high fever, acute kidney injury (AKI), thrombocytopenia, and hematuria are typical features of this syndrome. Pichindé viral infection of strain 13 guinea pigs is a model for Lassa fever virus in humans. Infected animals show impaired platelet function and altered coagulation parameters. Human endothelial cells and the human endothe1ia1-1 ike cell line, EA926, were infected with Pichinde virus. In Russia, the Puumala virus is the most important pathogen causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). This study demonstrated, that the genome variants of the Puumala virus that caused the outbreak of HFRS in the Saratov region in 2019 are descendants of strains circulating in Udmurtia, which were presumably introduced into the territory of the Saratov region by anthropogenic transfer downstream of the Kama and Volga rivers.
