weaver, william woys. "The Water Gate Inn: Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine Goes Mainstream." Gastronomica 9, no. 3 (2009): 25–31. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/gfc.2009.9.3.25.

Full text
Abstract:
This article deals with the creation of a new type of high-end Pennsylvania Dutch food tourism as packaged by Marjorie Hendricks (1897––1978) in her tastefully furnished Water Gate Inn which operated in Washington, DC from 1942 to 1966. Rather than draw on the Old Order Amish then emerging as tourism themes in places like Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Hendricks and her menu developer, Flora G. Orr (1893––1953) went back to original sources with the idea of showcasing some of the classic dishes for which Pennsylvania Dutch cooking was once well known. This included various pork-and-saurkraut recipes, the layered dishes called Gumbis (shredded cabbage with layers of fruit and/or meat), and a number of recipes invented by Hendricks but inspired by old, traditional preparation techniques. While Hendrick's restaurant won national acclaim for its high-quality fare and interior decorations composed of real Pennsylvania Dutch antiques, it had little effect on the menus then developing in Pennsylvania by the tourism industry, menus which were largely constructed around an inaccurate interpretation of both Amish foods and foodways and Pennsylvania Dutch culture in general.

Abstract:
Abstract Barkley L. Hendricks’s (1945-2017) portraiture is considered in relation to camp’s liminal nature. Hendricks employs the camp techniques of surface emphasis, and affective audience engagement, to relay a political message of black agency. His portraiture is framed with dynamics of MFSB, a popular culture movement developed in his hometown, Philadelphia, during the era of the 1970s. The paper brings to light Hendricks’s participation within the complex histories of imaging the black body. His participation defies the hegemonies inherent within these histories and, at the same time, reifies them.

Abstract:
Phosphatic microfossils including copious microvertebrates and conodont elements indicative of the upper Icriodella discreta–Icriodella deflecta Zone (Aeronian) are found in a single bed of the Hendricks Formation, Burnt Bluff Group, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Scales of thelodonts, including Loganellia sp. cf. Loganellia siberica Karajute-Talimaa, 1978, and rare Valyalepis crista Turner (in Turner and Nowlan, 1995) predominate among the microvertebrate remains. Most scales are referred to Zuegelepis potanus Turner new genus and species. Associated with the thelodont scales are rare phosphatic fragments of questionable dermal “bone” and scales, possibly of heterostracan origin. Thelodont scales are also found in the Hendricks Formation at Fayette State Park, Michigan and in the subsurface Byron Formation (Burnt Bluff Group) in Schoolcraft County, Michigan.

Abstract:
America’s First Ladies: A Historical Encyclopedia and Primary Document Collection of the Remarkable Women of the White House, by Nancy Hendricks is a complete history of the women who have often played a behind the scenes role during their time in the White House. This encyclopedia provides a thorough examination to the history of First Ladies and how they have changed since Martha Washington. In the introduction, Hendricks gives context to the position of the First Lady and includes detailed information such as when the title of First Lady was first used. Many First Ladies have been criticized, both for their lack of engagement as well as for being too engaged; this volume fills in the background of who these important women were and what they have meant to our country.

Abstract:
The Cambrian fossil record of the Arachnomorpha is rich and diverse and includes trilobites, chelicerates, and many taxa known from various soft-bodied faunas including the Burgess Shale and the Chengjiang. Exceptionally well-preserved arthropod fossils are also known from Middle Cambrian strata in Utah. Recently, two new arachnomorphs (Dicranocaris Briggs, Lieberman, Hendricks, Halgedahl, and Jarrard, 2008 and Nettapezoura Briggs, Lieberman, Hendricks, Halgedahl, and Jarrard, 2008) were described from the Wheeler and Marjum formations of Utah. Cladistic analysis is undertaken to investigate arachnomorph relationships in light of these two new genera. The character matrix of Edgecombe and Ramsköld (1999) serves as the foundation for this study, augmented by new characters and taxa. The results of our cladistic analysis suggest that at least three distinct arachnomorph clades had diverged by the Middle Cambrian, and perhaps much earlier; the Utah genera can be referred to groups within one of these clades.

Abstract:
Does Phubbing Behavior and Romantic Relation leads to Mental Health issues among married couple? The present study intended to explore the effect of how phubbing behavior and romantic relationships are affecting mental health of married couples. For the study purpose a sample of 120 Married couples were taken between the age ranges 20-60 years of age. Partner Phubbing Rating Scale developed by Roberts and David (2015) was used to measure phubbing behavior among married couples. Romantic Partner Scale (RPS) developed by Zacchilli, Hendricks, and Hendricks, (2012) was applied to assess the romantic relationship between both partners and the third scale used was short form of Mental Health Continuum developed by Keyes (2005) in order to assess the mental health issue among married couples. Phubbing behavior positively predicted interactional activity and negatively predicts compromise, avoidance, separation, dominance and submission. Phubbing behavior negatively predicts mental health among married couples. Gender difference indicates that males are higher on romantic relationship as well as mental health as compared to females. As far as demographic variables are concerned, based on the findings of current research, it was concluded that there was no gender differences found in phubbing behavior, romantic relationship, and mental health of married couples. Phubbing behavior is significantly higher in love marriage couples in comparison with arranged marriage couples.

Abstract:
Purpose African American English (AAE) speakers often face mismatches between home language and school language, coupled with negative attitudes toward AAE in the classroom. This forum, Serving African American English Speakers in Schools Through Interprofessional Education & Practice, will help researchers, parents, and school-based practitioners communicate in ways that are synergistic, collaborative, and transparent to improve educational outcomes of AAE speakers. Method The forum includes a tutorial offering readers instructions on how to engage in community-based participatory research (Holt, 2021). Through two clinical focus articles, readers will recognize how AAE develops during the preschool years and is expressed across various linguistic contexts and elicitation tasks (Newkirk-Turner & Green, 2021) and identify markers of developmental language disorder within AAE from language samples analyzed in Computerized Language Analysis (Overton et al., 2021). Seven empirical articles employ such designs as quantitative (Byrd & Brown, 2021; Diehm & Hendricks, 2021; Hendricks & Jimenez, 2021; Maher et al., 2021; Mahurin-Smith et al., 2021), qualitative (Hamilton & DeThorne, 2021), and mixed methods (Mills et al., 2021). These articles will help readers identify ways in which AAE affects how teachers view its speakers' language skills and communicative practices and relates to its speakers' literacy outcomes. Conclusion The goal of the forum is to make a lasting contribution to the discipline with a concentrated focus on how to assess and address communicative variation in the U.S. classroom.

Abstract:
Driving simulators are increasingly being used to test the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that interface with the driver in the vehicle. Examples of such technologies include autonomous, on-board sensors (Huguenin, 1993) which potentially can prevent many of the rear-end crashes that lead to fatalities or serious injuries (Knipling, Mironer, Hendricks, Tijerin, Everson, Allen and Wilson, 1993). A study of the simulator image factors which affect the detection of rear-end collisions and, more generally, of motion is described below. The study was undertaken on the University of Massachusetts driving simulator located at the Amherst campus.

Abstract:
This paper describes the experimental parameters involved in the femtosecond laser micromachining of biodegradable poly(L-lactide) which is frequently used in biomedical applications such as vascular stents or scaffolds. We investigated the influence of laser pulse energy, scanning strategy and number of overscans on the laser cutting throughput. The process parameters that enable reducing of a heat affected zone were determined. As a result, the optimal scanning strategy was determined in order to obtain high aspect ratio trenches in 380 ?m thick biodegradable polymer sheet. Full Text: PDF ReferencesW. Jia et al. Abstract:
Operating procedures are an integral part of the high-risk industries such as the Oil & Gas industry. Workers need them as a tool to help complete tasks effectively, efficiently, and safely and in the intended manner (Amyotte et al, 2007). Often, the assumption in the process safety domain is that procedures are very high quality, if not perfect, and therefore workers must follow them rigidly. What is all too often the case is that workers encounter a number of issues with procedure quality (e.g., inaccurate information, outdated steps; Hendricks & Peres, under review; Sasangohar et al., 2018). These quality issues have been shown to be associated with more deviations (Hendricks & Peres, under review). Now that many in the industry are starting to move toward digital procedures (hand-held, interactive, not .pdfs), there needs to be an examination of not only these issues, but also attitudes regarding procedure compliance and utility since these are related to deviations and also procedure use (Hendricks & Peres, under review). Accordingly, this study sought to answer the question—are workers’ perceptions of quality, attitudes, and deviation behavior different based on procedure format (digital vs. paper)? Our study consisted of 32 chemical processing and logistics workers at a large, multi-national corporation. Half of the participants ( n = 16) were already using digital procedures and the other half had not experienced a digital procedure roll-out. We were able to make both within and between- subject comparisons with the data since those digital users also still used paper for other tasks. For the within-subjects level of analysis (LOA), workers had significantly poorer quality perceptions of paper format procedures than digital procedures. Although not significantly different, workers reported more deviations for paper procedures. For the between- subjects LOA, procedure quality perceptions were significantly worse for paper procedures (paper only group) when compared to digital procedures in the digital rollout group. Deviations, utility attitude, and compliance attitude were not significantly different for the two formats (better attitudes regarding utility, poorer attitudes regarding compliance, fewer deviations for digital) and the effect sizes were at or above medium. We think it is important to start this line of research in the process safety industries because if the transition to digital procedures is already occurring, we need evidence that it is justifiable by demonstrating—especially at different LOAs—that we can expect improvements in these critical procedure-related variables. We need to expand this line of research to other companies, and to multiple sites with larger samples. Indeed, one of the challenges is gaining access to such important workers, but we see a large benefit to organizations who ultimately will be investing many resources into these types of changes.
