Shakespeare’s Henriad delves into questions of divine authority, political process, and the role of class in society. Most importantly, however, the text tracks the shifts in leadership and kingly identity. Richard II paints the portrait of a king infatuated with his own divinity. Richard’s journey from anointed king to deposed mortal captures the dissolution of his fantasy of invincibility. Inciting Richard’s demise, Henry IV effectively disturbs the passive obedience which the king’s subjects maintain; in doing so, the kingship begins to shift away from divine authority, moving into a vacuum of rebellion and civil conflict. Meanwhile, the previously profligate Prince Hal turns towards his duties; in proving himself to his father, he begins to accumulate honor, redeeming himself as a capable heir. Hal’s ascension as Henry V and his subsequent success as a king provides a stark contrast to the discontent during Richard’s reign. As the presence of divinity recedes, the theme of honor appears more frequently throughout the Henriad. Prince Hal views honor as an external commodity which can be accumulated by an individual. Honor, as presented by Henry V, seemingly converts an intrinsic trait or virtue into a commodity with economic value, allowing for the establishment of his own political legitimacy. Using the plays in the Henriad as my primary texts, I intend to examine this political and ideological transition by connecting Richard's divine right to Hal's construction of an economy of honor.

This dissertation examines the role of aesthetic activity in the pursuit of political agency in readings of several of Shakespeare’s plays, including Hamlet (1600), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1595), The Tempest (1610), the history plays of the second tetralogy (1595-9), Julius Caesar (1599), and Coriolanus (1605). I demonstrate how Shakespeare models political subjectivity—the capacity for individuals to participate meaningfully in the political realm—as necessitating active aesthetic agency. This aesthetic agency entails the fashioning of artistically conceived public personae that potential political subjects enact in the public sphere and the critical engagement of the aesthetic and political discourses of the subjects’ culture in a self-reflective and appropriative manner. Furthermore, these subjects should be wary auditors of the texts and personae they encounter within the public sphere in order to avoid internalizing constraining ideologies that reify their identities into forms less conducive to the pursuit of liberty and social mobility. Early modern audiences could discover several models for doing so in Shakespeare’s works. For example, Hamlet posits a model of Machiavellian theatricality that masks the Prince's interiority as he resists the biopolitical force and disciplinary discourses of Claudius's Denmark. Julius Caesar and Coriolanus advance a model of citizenship through the plays’ nameless plebeians in which rhetoric offers the means to participate in Rome’s political culture, and Shakespeare’s England for audiences, while authorities manipulate citizen opinion by molding the popularity of public figures. Public, artistic ability affords potential political subjects ways of not only framing their participation in their culture but also ways of conceiving of their identities and relationships to society that may defy normative notions of membership in the community.

Les ionophores carboxyliques utilisés comme additifs anticoccidiens dans l’alimentation des volailles sont actuellement en cours de réévaluation, pour l’Autorité européenne de sécurité sanitaire des aliments, afin d’en évaluer le risque pour le consommateur. Ce travail a contribué à l’évaluation de la pharmacocinétique du monensin chez le poulet et le dindon et de la salinomycine chez le poulet, afin de pouvoir établir quelques généralités concernant les ionophores carboxyliques chez la volaille. Les trois exemples pris comme sujet d’étude lors de cette thèse ont montré une faible biodisponibilité orale et une élimination rapide conduisant à un temps d’attente calculé qui ne dépasse pas 22 heures. Lors de ces travaux, des expérimentations in vitro et in vivo ont également servi à affecter des valeurs aux paramètres permettant d’implémenter un modèle pharmacocinétique basé sur la physiologie. Ce modèle a été appliqué au couple poulet-monensin. Un modèle physiologique du monensin chez le poulet a donc été testé. Les simulations de ce modèle reproduisent les concentrations observées après administration unique par voie intraveineuse ou orale, mais surestiment les concentrations après administrations orales répétées via l’aliment supplémenté<br>Carboxylic ionophores used as anticoccidial additives in poultry feed are currently under reevaluation by the European food safety authority in order to assess the safety of the consumer. This work has contributed to the knowledge of pharmacokinetics of monensin in chickens and turkeys and salinomycin in chickens in order to establish some generalities about carboxylic ionophores in poultry. The three examples taken as experimental subject during this thesis have shown a low oral bioavaibility and a rapid elimination driving to a calculated withdrawal period of less than 22 hours in any case. During these works, in vitro and in vivo experiments were used to attribute values to parameters allowing to implement a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model. A physiological model of monensin in chickens has then been tested. Simulations of this model reproduce concentrations observed after a single administration by intravenous or oral route but overestimate concentrations after repeated oral administrations in the supplemented food

Ne vienam lietuvių rašytojui teko patirti tremtinio arba emigranto dalią. Literatūra, sukurta svetur, dažnai pasižymi žemės traukos, benamiškumo ir kitomis ypatybėmis. Tai svarbu nagrinėjant magistro darbo temą – dialogiškumą žemininkų poezijoje. Žemininkai – ryškiausia išeivijos poetų grupė, pasivadinusi 1951 metais JAV pasirodžiusios antologijos „Žemė“ vardu. Šiai poetų kartai būdingos ryškios poezijos modernizavimo tendencijos. Žemininkus jungia dialogo su prarastuoju pasauliu ieškojimas. Savo poezijoje jie sprendžia egzistencines žmogaus gyvenimo problemas, turinčias filosofinių, gilių psichologinių, religinių ir kitų aspektų. Šiuo magistro darbu siekiama parodyti, kad dialogiškumo problema žemininkų kūryboje yra svarbi ir aktuali. Remiantis dialogo teorija (M. Buberis, E. Levinas, A. Mickūnas etc.), dialogas suvokiamas kaip santykis su „kitu“, intersubjektyvumas, abipusiškumas, kreipinio ir atsakymo situacija, pokalbis ir kita problematika (prisilietimas, žvilgsnis, pojūtis). Tyrinėjimo tikslas – remiantis fenomenologijos ir hermeneutikos metodologija, atskleisti skirtingus dialogiškumo santykius ankstyvojoje H. Nagio ir A. Nykos-Niliūno poezijoje. Literature created in the foreign lands is often characterized by the nostalgia of the native land, homelessness and other features. It is very important in the analysis of the master’s work theme – the dialogality in the poetry of the Zemininkai (the Lithuanian land poets). The Zemininkai are the brightest group of the emigration poets called by the name of the anthology ‘Zeme’ ( ‘the Land’) which appeared in the USA in 1951. The tendencies of the bright poetry modernisation are typical for this poets’ generation. The search for the dialogue with the lost world unites all the Lithuanian land poets. In their poetry they solve the existential problems of the human life having philosophical, deep psychological, religious and other aspects. By this master‘s work it is tried to show that the problem of the dialogality in the creative work of the Zemininkai is important and actual. According to the theory (by M. Buberis, E. Levinas, A. Mickunas, etc.) the dialogue is realized as the relation with the ‘another one‘, intersubjectivity, mutuality, situation of the address and answer, conversation and the other topic (touch, look, sense). The aim of the study is to disclose the different relations of the dialogality based on the methodology of phenomenology and hermeneutics in the early poetry of Henrikas Nagys and Nyka-Niliunas. <p>Litteraturen fra begynnelsen av 1800-tallet har ofte blitt lest som en ganske enkel flukt fra det moderne livets kompleksitet i retning av den skjønne kunsten, naturen og sjelen. Gjennom besjelingen av en ytre natur og fordypingen i egen inderlighet forsøker den romantiske dikteren visstnok å gjenreise en enhet som er i ferd med å gå tapt. Tegnene på den industrielle revolusjon kommer dermed til uttrykk i et slags negativformat: Ikke gjennom hva hvert enkelt diktverk sier, men gjennom hva det fortier. Som et eget selvstendig felt - på beskyttet distanse fra alle former for maskinstøy og konkurrerende medieteknologier - skal diktningen utgjøre et siste tilfluktsrom for den stadig mer utsatte erfaringen av harmoni mellom subjekt og omverden. Hvis man skulle peke ut et hovedproblem ved fortellinger av denne typen, måtte det være at det at litteraturens autonomi blir satt i forbindelse med en simpel tilbaketrekning fra avgjørende politiske spørsmål. Litteraturen (og derigjennom også litteraturstudiet) kommer til å framstå som virkelighetsflukt, og ikke som et effektivt middel til å analysere og å forstå verden omkring oss.</p><p>I denne avhandlingen skal det handle om forfatterskapet til Heinrich von Kleist. (1777-1811). Nærmere bestemt vil jeg analysere utvekslingene mellom medie-, teknologi- og litteraturhistorie med utgangspunkt i dette litterære verket. Enkelttekster som <i>Robert Guiskard, Prinz Friedrich von Homburg</i> og <i>Die heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik</i> vil i denne forbindelse gjøres til gjenstand for inngående tekstanalyser, men jeg kommer også til å fokusere på brevene og den funksjonen disse kan sies å innta i forbindelse med Kleists litterære produksjon. Friedrich Kittler skriver i Aufschreibesysteme 1800/1900 at "skyggen fra de tekniske mediene ennå ikke hadde falt inn over diktningen anno 1800". (Kittler 1995: 128) Til forskjell fra en slik synsmåte vil hvert enkelt av denne avhandlingens kapitler fokusere på bestemte apparater og medier som kan sies å ha stått modell for Kleists skrivepraksis. Slik håper jeg ikke bare å tegne opp et alternativt bilde av dette forfatterskapet, men også av hvordan Kleists produksjonsestetikk ikke nødvendigvis er et særtilfelle, men en del av et samtidig nettverk av medieformer og teknologier.</p><p>På grunn av Kleists rolle som den tyske litteraturens <i>Außenseiter</i> framfor noen, synes fortellingene om litteraturens autonomi spesielt påtrengende i forbindelse med nettopp dette forfatterskapet. Som kjent var ikke Kleist hjemmehørende verken i Jena eller Weimar, og han stod utenfor de litterære salongene i Berlin. Militærkarrieren gav han opp. Ikke klarte han å stifte familie, og ikke ble han en del av den prøyssiske embetsstaten. Politisk stod han i opposisjon til det rådende monarkiet, men også til erobreren Napoleon. Etter først å ha vist en glødende interesse for naturvitenskapelige studier, kastet han også dette livsprosjektet over bord. Av de filosofiske Kant-studiene lærte han visstnok ikke annet enn at sannheten verken lar seg erkjenne eller formidle, og at det godt kan tenkes at vi alle går omkring og betrakter verden "med grønne glassøyne". Hvis denne mislykkede filosofen og litterære einstøingen skulle slumpe til å knytte en personlig forbindelse eller et vennskapsbånd for en tid, kunne man være ganske sikker på at også denne forbindelsen til menneskenes verden brøt sammen i løpet av kort tid. Den manglende sosiale tilpasningssansen og et manisk-depressivt sinnelag skal i det hele tatt ha ført Kleist på kant med den tiden og det samfunnet han levde i, og til slutt gikk det da også som det måtte gå ved Wannsee den 21. november 1811. Hva som står igjen etter denne datoen, er i henhold til en slik forfattermyte et gripende vitnemål om den menneskelige eksistensens lidelse og angst.</p><p>Når jeg i fortsettelsen kommer til å fokusere på konkrete former for utveksling mellom det litterære verket og samtidige medieformer og diskurser, er det blant annet for å tegne opp et mindre tragisk bilde av forfatterskapet, et bilde hvor Kleists tekstproduksjon viser seg å stå i skjæringspunktet mellom for eksempel mediehistorie og vitenskapshistorie. Denne metoden synes også å gi et alternativ til de alminnelige forsøkene på å bestemme forfatterskapet enten som progressivt og moderne eller også som nasjonalistisk og reaksjonært. Den manglende viljen til å forbinde Kleist med det tidlige 1800-tallets diskurser kan sies å ha åpnet for de mange forsøkene på å knytte ham til 1900-tallets historie. Bernd Hamacher påpeker dette forholdet i en omfattende redegjørelse for Homburg-resepsjonen, og han viser i denne forbindelse blant annet til hvordan verkene etter Kleist har fungert som et eksperimentfelt for utprøvningen av nye litteraturteorier og analysemetoder. (B. Hamacher 1999: 10) Hvis vi forholder oss til perioden etter andre verdenskrig, har man blant annet mobilisert eksistensialisme, marxisme, psykoanalyse, resepsjonsestetikk, diskursanalyse, systemteori og kjønnsstudier i forsøkene på forklare verket utenfra. En antologiutgivelse som <i>Positionen der Literaturwissenschaft</i> (1985) gir et godt eksempel på denne forskningssituasjonen. Her skal åtte såkalte "modellanalyser" illustreres gjennom lesningen av <i>Das Erdbeben in Chili</i>. Bokprosjektet bidro ikke bare til å tegne opp et gitt vitenskapsteoretisk landskap, men skapte også et plan for erobringen av nye posisjoner, et eksklusivt område hvor noen få utvalgte stemmer fikk slippe til mens andre rimeligvis måtte bli utelatt. I denne sammenhengen kom David Wellbery til å innta en olympisk og opphøyet posisjon både ved å redigere verket og ved å sette inn sitt eget bidrag om "litteratursemiotikk" som en slags overordnet metavitenskap i midten av boken. Friedrich Kittler markerte også styrke på teorifronten ved å være førstemann ut i rekken av kommentarorer med et eget bidrag om "diskursanalyse". Endelig fikk Werner Hamacher anledning til å framstå som en nåtidig <i>Außenseiter</i> ved å forfatte den eneste modellanalysen uten eksplisitt metodeangivelse. Opprinnelig hadde han blitt spurt om å skrive en tekst under headingen "grammatologi", men forestillingen om at en lesning etter forbilde av Derrida skulle ha noe med en metode å gjøre var så "widersinnig" at redaktøren og dekonstruktøren til slutt fant det best å erstatte innholdsangivelsen med "eine Leerstelle" over navnet til Hamacher. (Wellbery 1985: 10) Slik kom innholdslisten til å romme i alt to uposisjonerte bidrag. Til å begynne med stod novelleteksten til Kleist, uten nærmere angivelse av hvilken metode denne fortellingen eventuelt skulle falle inn under. Lengst bak i boken, nærmest som et speilbilde av "Das Erdbeben in Chili", kunne man så studere "Das Beben der Darstellung" av Werner Hamacher.</p><p>Ved å lese den aktuelle Kleist-forskningen på overflatens nivå, via "Daten, die am Rand oder jenseits des Einzeltextes stehen" (Kittler 1985: 24), kan vi på denne måten skaffe til veie en første oversikt over det forskningsfeltet vi her skal bevege oss inn på. En mer inngående diskusjon av andre Kleist-lesninger, og en posisjonering av vårt eget prosjekt i forhold til disse, vil imidlertid måtte vente til vårt eget lesearbeid har kommet i gang. I det påfølgende magasin-kapittelet kommer jeg da også til å trekke inn en rekke andre Kleistforskere for å plassere avhandlingens perspektiv i en bredere sammenheng.. Allerede nå skylder jeg imidlertid å gjøre oppmerksom på at mitt eget arbeid står i forlengelsen av rådende strømninger i samtidens tyske litteraturvitenskap. På det metodiske planet har jeg hentet inspirasjon til mitt eget arbeid fra Friedrich Kittler spesielt og fra en mer allmenn dreining av germanistikken i mediehistorisk retning generelt. Av samtidige Kleist-forskere som har gitt avgjørende impulser til mitt eget prosjekt, vil jeg blant annet trekke fram Karl Heinz Bohrer, Gerhard Neumann, Gernot Müller, Anthony Stephens og Berhard Siegert.</p><p>Bohrer lanserer et begrep om "estetisk subjektivitet" i forbindelse med Kleists brevskrivning. Neumann viser til magasinet som en mulig modell for Kleists tekstproduksjon. Müller gjør framlegg til en undersøkelse av Kleists intermediale "bildetenkning". Stephens påtaler de eiendommelige tingmetaforene til Kleist. Og Siegert avdekker noen av de mediehistoriske forbindelseslinjene mellom Kleists brevskrivning- og lagringsteknologi. I fortsettelsen, og da ikke minst i magasin-kapittelet, vil det bli klarere hvordan hvert enkelt av disse funnene lar seg innordne i forhold til mitt eget prosjekt.</p><p>Som det framgår av innholdsfortegnelsen, er <i>Inventarium: Medier og maskiner hos Heinrich von Kleist</i> organisert i henhold til en romlig modell. I stedet for å trekke opp en historiskbiografisk linje gjennom forfatterskapet, forsøker jeg å forbinde ulike tekstsoner med hverandre og å påpeke mulige korrespondanser mellom dette verket og et samtidig diskursivt og intermedialt nettverk. Dette kan resultere i at noen av de vante figurene fra fortellingene om Kleists liv og forfatterskap faller utenfor den gitte avhandlingens rammer. Når jeg ikke skriver spesielt mye verken om Kant-krisen eller om andre biografiske vendepunkter, kommer ikke dette av at disse episodene aldri fant sted eller av at de skulle være uten betydning, men av at begrepene om kriser og faser har latt seg erstatte av en mer romlig analysemodell. Ved å behandle forfatterskapet som et nettverk av motiviske og figurlige forbindelseslinjer, blir det også enklere å synliggjøre noen av de historiske linjene fra dette enkeltverket i retning av det tidlige 1800-tallets institusjoner og mediesystemer. Hvis man leser forfatterskapet som en sammenhengende beretning med døden som teleologisk endemål, ender man nettopp i de bildene av splittelse og isolasjon som altfor ofte har fått lov til å prege bildene av Kleist Hvis vi imidlertid stanser opp fallbevegelsen for i stedet å fokusere på tekstenes sammensetning og funksjonsmåte, er vi i gang med denne avhandlingens prosjekt.</p><p>Utgivelsen av <i>Sämtliche Werke</i> i Roland Reuß' og Peter Stangles <i>Brandenburger-Ausgabe</i> har representert det kanskje viktigste bidraget til Kleist-forskningen de siste ti årene. Under arbeidet med den foreliggende avhandlingen har det da også vært en kilde til stadig inspirasjon å studere de nye bindene i denne serien etterhvert som de har kommet ut. Ikke minst for studiet av Kleists brevskrivning har det vært verdifullt å få en fotografisk faksimilegjengivelse av alle bevarte håndskrifter. Parallellutgivelsen av <i>Brandenburger Kleist-Blätter</i> har dessuten etablert et rikholdig arkiv av utfyllende tekstkommentarer. Når jeg i denne avhandlingen likevel har valgt å sitere fra Helmut Sembdners utgave av <i>Sämtliche Werke</i> <i>und Briefe</i>, kommer dette av at utgivelsesprosjektet til Reuß og Staengle ikke har foreligget i komplett form under arbeidet med denne avhandlingen. I skrivende stund mangler fremdeles tre av dramabindene (I/6, 7 og 8), det ene bindet med lyrikk (III), de to avsluttende brevbindene (IV 3 og 4) og de tre tilleggsbindene med <i>Erläuterungen</i> (V 1-3). Ved at jeg har forholdt meg til Sembdner, har det dessuten blitt enklere å relatere mine egne tekstfunn til den eksisterende forskningstradisjonens sitatpraksis. L'oeuvre de michaux presente la caracteristique d'etre a la fois apparemment denotative et parfaitement figurale. En rupture avec une certaine rhetorique, michaux cree un texte dont les elements font figure les uns par rapport aux autres, mais qui brouillent les reperes thematiques et rhetoriques. "ecarts d'ecarts", les mots michaudiens semblent effectuer un retour vers la denotation, contre les "exces" metaphoriques. Deployant par ailleurs une polysemie poussee a l'extreme, ils conduisent en fait a des apories multiples, qui ont pour effet de figer les mouvements semantiques dans un elan ou connotation et denotation semblent s'annuler reciproquement. Espace du signe, litterarite, images du vide, voila quelques-uns des axes qui fondent les mouvances enonciatives du discours et les difficultes de michaux a concevoir sa position d'ecrivain<br>Michaux's writing seems to be at the same time in denotation area, and fully metaphoric. Against some rhetorical concepts, his text introduces a confusion between theme and metaphor. These logical deadlocks produce a doubt about the concept of "opera aperta". In this creative writing text I wanted to examine what happened with a man who regularly walked through the door of his apartment building and turned left. The man turned out to be Henrik, a divorced man in his mid 50:s. On one of his dog walks he meets Emma, a younger woman. The text examines Henrik´s and Emma´s background and present situation. Both of them are in a life crisis.

This thesis explores the late-Henrican polity through the archive and perspective of William Paget, Henry VIII's secretary at the end of his reign. Paget's papers as secretary (1543-1547), that form the basis of the thesis, are an extensive, unique and relatively under-used source. From this starting-point Paget's role as secretary is explored and he is revealed as the personal servant of the king, whose natural environment was the court. As such he was an influential source of counsel and perhaps the key patronage-broker at court. In this context Paget also had a significant influence over the operation of the dry stamp at the end of the reign. Equally, Paget's role in shaping the function of the secretary and his relations with the recently formed privy council was of considerable importance, providing the template for later Tudor secretaries. Diplomacy in the uncertain world of the 1540s was one of Paget's primary concerns and his priorities can be seen as trying to provide security and stability for the realm. This is revealed not only in his 'Consultation' of August 1546 but also in his diplomacy with the French, the Schmalkaldic League and the Papacy. In this he sometimes found himself at odds with the king and leading a privy council united in a desire for peace. Politically Paget has traditionally been cast as an ambitious politique, the 'master of practices' and part of the earl of Hertford's reform party. Whilst acknowledging Paget's close relations with Hertford this thesis questions the factional interpretation of the last years of the reign and argues that the predominant concern of Paget and his fellow privy councillors was a peaceful succession in which unanimity rather than conflict was the key-note.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo central apresentar a plausibilidade do enfrentamento de um problema em filosofia de maneira intuitiva. Apresentaremos elementos da filosofia bergsoniana no intuito de explicitar como a duração temporal articula-se com a memória, com a consciência, com a percepção. Na sequência demonstraremos a naturalidade dada por Kant a um tempo espacializado que possibilita todo conhecimento humano. Por fim, enfrentaremos o desafio de compreender os atos do método intuitivo, ao mesmo tempo em que apresentaremos nosso objeto: a plausibilidade da intuição à problematização filosófica.<br>This paper aims to present the plausibility of confronting the problem in philosophy in an intuitive way. We'll present elements of Bergon's philosophy in purpose to make explicit how the temporal duration articulates with the memory, the conscience and the perception. Right after, we'll demonstrate how the spatial time (which allows every human knowledge) became naturalized in Kant. In the end, we'll face the challenge of understanding the acts of the intuitive method, at the same time, we'll present our objective: a plausibility of intuition to the philosophical problemazation.

Il milita également pour l'union sacrée et la guerre à outrance à partir de septembre 1939. Le 17 juin 1940 il rejoignit l'Angleterre. Il préféra s'installer aux Etats Unis et ne reprit une activité de journaliste qu'en janvier 1942 pour soutenir le général de Gaulle. Il fut amené par la suite à s'opposer à de Gaulle à qui il reprochait son nationalisme et son ambition politique. A la Libération, il ne revint pas en France. Il resta aux Etats Unis, y écrivit un livre vengeur contre de Gaulle intitulé "De Gaulle dictateur". He became famous in the struggle against German recovery and Munich agreements. Precursor of the resistance against Germany, he gathered around his newspaper L'époque, the believers in firmly facing Hitler. Ce travail se propose d'eclairer la vie et l'oeuvre d'henri-pierre roche (1879-1959), qui reste inconnu malgre les adaptations cinematographiques de ses deux romans. La premiere partie montre qu'elle fut la vie mouvementee de roche, qui se definit d'abord comme un curieux. Curieux des arts, principalement de la peinture et de la sculpture, puisqu'il se lie d'amitie avec tous les grands peintres et sculpteurs de la premiere moitie du siecle. Il sert aussi d'intercesseur entre les artistes-notamment laurencin, duchamp, brancusi-et des collectionneurs, en europe, aux usa ou en inde. Il est aussi curieux des femmes : sa vie se lit comme une longue experimentation de la gent feminine. Chaque femme etant particuliere, il lui faut les essayer toutes. Il est curieux egalement de sa propre vie : c'est a elle qu'il consacre la quasi totalite de ses ecrits. La seconde partie est consacree a l'etude de ses oeuvres. Il s'agit de montrer quelles en sont les qualites propres jules et jim, le roman le plus connu, est une belle histoire d'amour mais qui ne se laisse pas prendre aux cliches de la passion. L'originalite de deux anglaises et le continent reside d'abord dans sa construction et les textes originaux dont se sert l'auteur : journaux et correspondances sont assembles au point de faire naitre une oeuvre romanesque. Enfin, le journal, plus de sept mille pages, est un temoin singulier de cette vie : il est presque exclusivement consacre aux femmes<br>This dissertation is an attempt to throw light on both the life and work of henri-pierre roche (1879-1959) who has remained a fairly unknown literary figure despite the film adaptation of his two novels. The first part of it turns our attention to the writer's busy life. He can mostly be seen as a man full of curiosity. Indeed he was curious about arts - mostly painting and sculpture - and got acquainted with the greatest artists of the first half of our century. He was also an intermediary between some artists - notably laurencin, duchamp, brancusi - and collectors - particulary in france, in the usa and in india. He was also curious about women and felt he has to experiment them all on the ground that they were different from each other. Finally he was curious about his own life too and most of his written work is devoted to it. The second part of this dissertation deals with roche's work with a view to revealing its own literary quality. With jules et jim, his most famous novel, he does not indulge in the typical cliches of passion, however superb a love story this may be. The originality of deux anglaises et le continent lies in its structure and its sources - that is diaries and letters. Finally, le journal, with its about 7000 pages is a singular witness of this life : it's almost entirely devoted to women

Henri sauvage debute dans l'art nouveau en creant des pochoirs, et sa renommee vient avec sa participation a l'exposition universelle de 1900 et avec la villa majorelle a nancy (1898-1902). Avec son associe charles sarazin, henri sauvage realise entre 1903 et 1912 six immeubles de logements ouvriers. La collaboration avec paul sarazin amene les deux architectes a realiser deux villas a biarritz, a concevoir six hotels et autres operations immobilieres. Invente en 1909, brevete en 1912, le systeme de construction en gradins est applique au luxueux immeuble de rapport du 26 rue vavin (1912-1913), et aux immeubles de logements ouvriers di 13 rue des amiraux (1913-1928) et de la rue des saules (1925-1928; non realise). Des 1913, henri sauvage travaille sur le principe de construction rapide, qui l'amene a deposer plusieurs brevets. La necessite de planifier les chantiers regit la conception de nombreux immeubles de rapport concus et realises durant les annees vingt, la reconstruction de la samaritaine (1925-1930) et la construction des magasins decre a nantes (1931). Cette these est basee sur les archives henri sauvage (institut francais d'architecture) et sur les dossiers de permis de construire (archives de paris), qui ont donne matiere a un catalogue raisonne (seconde partie). Ce travail permet d'analyser l'ecart entre la pratique d'henri sauvage et le discours qu'il elabore sur ses inventions<br>Henri sauvage starts in "art nouveau" by creating pochoirs, but he rises to fame by participating in the world's fair of 1900 in paris and after the design of the majorelle's villa in nancy (1898-1902). With his associate charles sarazin, henri sauvage designs six low cost housings between 1903 and the world war i. In collaboration with paul sarzin, the two architects design at the same period two villas in biarritz, six hotels and several real estate operations. Invented in 1909, patented in 1912, the stepped-terrace construction system is applied at the luxurious appartment building of 26 rue vavin in paris (1912-1913), at the low cost housings of 13 rue des amiraux in paris (1913-1928) and of rue des saules (1925-1928; non constructed). Since 1913, henri sauvage works on the principe of quick construction for which he registers many patents. The necessity of construction site planing lays down, in the twenties, the design and construction of parisian appartment buildings, the reconstruction of the samaritaine department stores in paris (1925-1930) and the construction of the decre department store in nantes (1931). This thesis is based on the henri sauvage archive (institut francais d'architecture) and on the building licence files (archives de paris), that allowed the constitution of a descriptive catalogue (second part). Notre recherche interroge les composantes du capital culturel et les conditions de sa transmission et se focalise sur le cas de collégiens en difficultés scolaires dont les parents sont fortement diplômés. Elle repose sur une enquête par questionnaire conduite dans quatre collèges de l'agglomération lyonnaise en mars 1999 (677 familles constituent notre population globale d’enquête) et sur des entretiens menés auprès de 36 familles. L’analyse des liens entre variables relevant de la situation scolaire de l’enfant et variables définissant des propriétés familiales permet de préciser ce qui "fait capital" sur le "marché" scolaire (diplômes parentaux du supérieur, pratiques de lecture familiales) et ce qui peut en "parasiter" la transmission (faible rendement professionnel du diplôme parental, son inscription dans une lignée peu diplômée, son acquisition au cours d’une expérience scolaire difficile). Resituées dans des configurations familiales singulières (reconstituées grâce aux entretiens), ces propriétés sont incarnées par des adultes mettant en œuvre des dispositions plus ou moins proches de celles requises dans le contexte scolaire (dispositions ascétiques et planificatrices, illusio scolaire, tendance à l'auto-contrainte, appétences et compétences vis-à-vis de la culture écrite), dispositions sur lesquelles s'appuie la socialisation des collégiens. Une fois les composantes de l'héritage culturel précisées, sont reconstituées les conditions de sa transmission (synchronisation des horaires familiaux, modes de régulation domestique, rapports d'identification entre parents et enfants) et ce qui la perturbe (captation professionnelle, séparation des parents…)<br>Our research discusses the components of the cultural capital and the conditions of its transmission. It focuses particularly on the case of “collégiens” facing school difficulties where parents are highly qualified. This study is based both on a questionnaire completed by 677 families from 4 collèges located in the urban area of Lyon in March 1999 as well as interviews with 36 families. The analysis of the relationship between variables related to the school situation of the children and their family’s background allows us to specify what 'produces capital' in the school "market" from the point of view of their parents? university diplomas and family reading practices. As well, we are able to consider what can interfere in the cultural transmission, by focusing on the low professional income of their parents diplomas; on the children's inscription in a lineage with low qualifications; and a parental difficult school experience. This empirical research enabled the re-localization of the "collégiens" in their singular family configurations. The enounced characteristics are embodied by adults with dispositions more or less similar to those required at school (ascetic and planning dispositions; school illusio; inclination to self-control; written culture). This dispositions are on the base of the socialization of the children. Once the components of the cultural heritage are presented, the conditions of its transmission will be reconstituted (synchronization of the family timetable; ways of domestic regulation; relationships of identification between parents and children) as well as what disturbs them (work-related demands, divorce, etc. )

The value of heads of department in the management of their departments and the school is currently not fully utilised or taken into consideration by the different role players in education. In many cases the appointment as head of departments is rather experienced as just another level in the educator's career to become a principle. The specific responsibilities and roles, coupled to this post, are not fully realised. The effectiveness of heads of departments as appointed managers in the school can only by determined through the degree in which they can provide guidance. The training of managers is traditionally placed in the forefront, but in changing times and progress rather endeavours to find a leader who can activate, motivate and effectively communicate. The objective of this research is to determine which roles in education are fulfilled by heads of department as leaders, and to what degree there is a need to develop the leadership skills of heads of department. To achieve the objective of the research, it was necessary to firstly determine what leadership roles, functions and skills are expected of heads of department in secondary schools and why leadership development for heads of department is important. A literature study on the determinants of leadership in general and applicable to the head of department was then done. Focus was also placed on the models used to determine leadership training of heads of department. After a questionnaire was distributed to representative secondary schools in the Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp districts and responses statistically analysed, was it possible to draw a number of correlations and make recommendations. iii The general impression created by the results was that heads of department do have a need for the development of their leadership skills. The cause of this is in all probability the dynamic nature of the education environment in South Africa and the lack of effective leadership in the management of change. The deduction can justly be made that it is essential that formal attention by paid to now and in the future. The training of teachers must without a doubt deal with elements of leadership.
