Wiggins, Joshua C. "Occasional Liturgy in the Henrician Reformation." DigitalCommons@USU, 2018. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7063.

Full text
Abstract:
King Henry VIII (1487-1547) famously severed ties with Roman Catholocism and nationalized the church in England in order to secure an annulment from his wife. His decision instigated the Henrician Reformation (1527-1547), a subset of the English Reformation. The king assumed the title 'Supreme Head of the English Church' and vested himself with the power to reform his country's church/ Occasional liturgies - the formal religious ceremonies surrounding birth, marriage, and death - were prime opportunities to publicly display new doctrines and procedures. Instead, these rituals changed surprisingly little and largely mirrored the pageantry performed by his parents. Two conclusions are drawn from the results. First, the modern perception of Henry VIII as an all-powerful rebel is challenged due to his careful observance of the liturgy in order to achieve a desired outcome, whether it be a proper christening, wedding, or state funeral. Second, these royal rituals are shown to not only demonstrate religious beliefs, but also social and political realities as well. These two principles add complexity to understanding the course of the Henrician Reformation.

Abstract:
This thesis is about court politics during the years of Wolsey's ascendancy and it is based upon a variety of different sources. The king's itinerary has received little attention, yet it was one of the most fundamental aspects of the court, and where the king was staying was of direct political importance. The way in which the court functioned changed during the summer progress and when the sweating sickness reached epidemic proportions the king disbanded the entire household. The nature of the royal 'progress' is discussed and with whom the king stayed during his progresses. Dr. Starkey has analysed the role of the privy chamber and its political significance. This study examines those courtiers who took part in the king's recreation. The role of chamber officers in the jousts and masks is considered and its implications for court politics. Cardinal Wolsey is currently the centre of a revisionist debate. His relationship with the king and the royal court is central to a full understanding of his role as 'chief' minister. Wolsey's relationship with some of the senior officers of the chamber and household is explored and how he managed to retain his influence with the king. Henry summoned council meetings when he wished to hear a broader range of views and he did not rely totally on Wolsey's advice. The cardinal was interested in events at court and wished to be kept fully informed. The reconstruction of Wolsey's itinerary throws new light on his role in court politics. After comparing his itinerary with that of the king, it emerges that Wolsey visited the court more frequently than has traditionally been recognised. He met the king during the summer progress and his role at court is reinterpreted.

Nelson, Ann E. "Solutions of Hope: Study of Public Choice Alternative Education." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26612.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine findings related to the problems that school systems confront in educating all students and the approaches used in solving those problems through the use of alternative educational curricula and settings. It considers that schools foster public engagement, not simply public relations, in order to bring the communities they serve into conversation, which calls for listening, responding, and educating. Findings indicate that concerns about poor performance on standardized tests, academic standards, and the numbers of students dropping out of schools are among the problems many public schools unfortunately have in common in both rural and urban areas. These deficiencies exist in populations represented in public schools throughout this country. This study reveals that even though these seemingly insurmountable problems are an on-going cause for public concerns of American schools, school leaders are addressing these issues through policies and practices in alternative education programs. The category of educational alternative option studied will be that of public choice alternative education. Public choice options are open to all students in their localities who meet the placement criteria. The chosen school studied, the Virginia Randolph Community High School , was identified by the Virginia State Department of Education as having an established public choice alternative education program. This alternative high school has been fully accredited by Virginia standards. This investigation will also examine the influence of a historical figure, Miss Virginia Estelle Randolph, on the present alternative educational program at Virginia Randolph Community High School.<br>Ed. Abstract:
Several Municipalities in Virginia are currently developing and implementing watershed programs. While programmatic goals and objectives vary, all seek to incorporate stream restoration project work. Decision support tools exist for many aspects of watershed and water resources management, however, there are currently no such tools to aid municipalities in their stream restoration efforts. This study details the development of such a decision support tool for the Henrico County Stream Assessment/Watershed Management Program based on the assessment of stream restoration opportunities and feasibility constraints. A framework for the development of future municipal watershed programs is presented and related issues are discussed.<br>Master of Landscape Architecture

Johnston, Andrews. "William Paget and the late-Henrican polity, 1543-1547." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2762.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the late-Henrican polity through the archive and perspective of William Paget, Henry VIII's secretary at the end of his reign. Paget's papers as secretary (1543-1547), that form the basis of the thesis, are an extensive, unique and relatively under-used source. From this starting-point Paget's role as secretary is explored and he is revealed as the personal servant of the king, whose natural environment was the court. As such he was an influential source of counsel and perhaps the key patronage-broker at court. In this context Paget also had a significant influence over the operation of the dry stamp at the end of the reign. Equally, Paget's role in shaping the function of the secretary and his relations with the recently formed privy council was of considerable importance, providing the template for later Tudor secretaries. Diplomacy in the uncertain world of the 1540s was one of Paget's primary concerns and his priorities can be seen as trying to provide security and stability for the realm. This is revealed not only in his 'Consultation' of August 1546 but also in his diplomacy with the French, the Schmalkaldic League and the Papacy. In this he sometimes found himself at odds with the king and leading a privy council united in a desire for peace. Politically Paget has traditionally been cast as an ambitious politique, the 'master of practices' and part of the earl of Hertford's reform party. Whilst acknowledging Paget's close relations with Hertford this thesis questions the factional interpretation of the last years of the reign and argues that the predominant concern of Paget and his fellow privy councillors was a peaceful succession in which unanimity rather than conflict was the key-note.

Abstract:
Her skal åtte såkalte "modellanalyser" illustreres gjennom lesningen av <i>Das Erdbeben in Chili</i>. (Wellbery 1985: 10) Slik kom innholdslisten til å romme i alt to uposisjonerte bidrag. Abstract:
The essay deals with the early archaeology in Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries in generally and with Henric Jacob Sivers excavations at Skrickerum in particularly. In the medieval, Christian Sweden, the relics from the antiquity was considered merely as symbols of the heathen past  but with the foundation of Sweden as a united kingdom they awoke interest as symbols for the nation and were used as tools in the nation building. The interpretation of the antiquity and the ancient relics where done with the Bible and the ancient writers of Greece and Rome as guides and sources. With the new scientific approach, inspired by the Enlightenment, the Swedish antiquity and its relics gained other meanings and understandings and during the early 19th century Swedish archaeology developed into a scientific subject. The aim of this essay is to retain a deeper understanding for how Swedish antiquity was looked upon during the period between the Renaissance and 1800 among scholars of the time. What similarities and differences can be spotted in a comparison with archaeology of today? Due to this, the essay concentrate on a few, selected scholars from each century and takes a look at questions like; what was considered antiquities, how where they interpreted and what part did the Christianity, and later on the Enlightenment, play in the view upon Sweden´s ancient past. In order to find answers on a broader and deeper level, the essay makes a detailed study of excavations performed by Henric Jacob Sivers at Skrickerum, Östergötland in 1757. Sivers, who was a priest and a scholar born and educated in Germany, was inspired by the new scientific view and very interested in the ancient past, he collected antiques and called himself “fornälskare”, antique lover. The excavations at Skrickerum took place during two days in June 1757 and Sivers documented the work rather thoroughly in his publication Berättelse om några nyligen i Tryserums Sokn, Tiust Härad och Calmare Län, öpnade hedniska Grafhögar och the theruti fundna Saker (Sivers 1758). How were these excavations conducted and how did they differ from excavations of today, in theoretical, methodical and conductional aspects? Sivers’ publication will give the answers and help us get a glimpse of Swedish archaeology in its early state.

Abstract:
This study reassesses the relationship between the monumental collection of Henricus Isaac's mass-proper cycles published as the Choralis Constantinus and the composer's original massproper projects. The first section charts changing views of Isaac as a historical figure, from his time to ours. Following this, the second section pursues the implications of recent redatings of major Choralis sources with a detailed investigation of the transmission of the Choralis' s music from composer to print. This analysis suggests new views for the make-up of each of the projects known to have been compiled together in the print: the earlier theory of a Constance Common of Saints is dismissed, whilst a mass-ordinary that may have belonged to the Constance project is identified; it is suggested that Isaac's mass-propers for the Imperial court cannot easily be seen as a single project, and that some anonymous propercycles not found in the Choralis may be Isaac's and may have belonged to Imperial repertory. To shed further light on the original scopes of Isaac's mass-proper projects, the third section of this thesis investigates Isaac's non-Choralis mass-propers. Particular attention is given to the large collection of such items found in two related manuscripts from latersixteenth- century Augsburg. Examination of the context and function of these manuscripts suggests that the unica they preserve attributed to Isaac are spurious. On the other hand, consideration of the Choralis's transmission and the shape of Isaac's secure Imperial repertory suggests that some anonymous cycles in the manuscript WeimB A are Isaac's. The final part of this study re-examines the attributions and de-attributions made in the first two sections at a music-stylistic level. No conflicting evidence is found. On the contrary, all earlier suggestions are reinforced.

Abstract:
The value of heads of department in the management of their departments and the school is currently not fully utilised or taken into consideration by the different role players in education. In many cases the appointment as head of departments is rather experienced as just another level in the educator's career to become a principle. The specific responsibilities and roles, coupled to this post, are not fully realised. The effectiveness of heads of departments as appointed managers in the school can only by determined through the degree in which they can provide guidance. The training of managers is traditionally placed in the forefront, but in changing times and progress rather endeavours to find a leader who can activate, motivate and effectively communicate. The objective of this research is to determine which roles in education are fulfilled by heads of department as leaders, and to what degree there is a need to develop the leadership skills of heads of department. To achieve the objective of the research, it was necessary to firstly determine what leadership roles, functions and skills are expected of heads of department in secondary schools and why leadership development for heads of department is important. A literature study on the determinants of leadership in general and applicable to the head of department was then done. Focus was also placed on the models used to determine leadership training of heads of department. After a questionnaire was distributed to representative secondary schools in the Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp districts and responses statistically analysed, was it possible to draw a number of correlations and make recommendations. iii The general impression created by the results was that heads of department do have a need for the development of their leadership skills. The cause of this is in all probability the dynamic nature of the education environment in South Africa and the lack of effective leadership in the management of change. The deduction can justly be made that it is essential that formal attention by paid to now and in the future. The training of teachers must without a doubt deal with elements of leadership. When the preceding requirements are met and when the Department of Education continuously present empowerment workshops on this subject, it will definitely lead to more effective and heads of department.<br>Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Boitnott, Kitty J. "Comparisons of Attitudes Toward Computer Use and Computer Technology Based on Gender and Race/Ethnicity Among Eighth Graders." VCU Scholars Compass, 2007. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1081.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not having a laptop computer for individual use 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week lessens differences between how eighth grade girls and eighth grade boys in 10 middle schools in HenricoCounty, Virginia perceive computer use and computer technology. Having a laptop computer to use at any time of the day or night eliminates the issue of competition between boys and girls for computer use. It also eliminates the need for either girls or boys to perform in front of other students while learning, thus lessening to some degree, feelings of computer anxiety. Competition for computer access and computer anxiety are two theories that have been offered to explain why many young women in previous studies have chosen not to use computers to the same extent that young men do, as well as why many young women generally do not consider computer-related careers as career options in their futures. A modified Computer Attitude Questionnaire, based upon the CAQ, Version 5.14 was used to survey eighth grade girls and boys in 10 Henrico County middle schools. Data collected from the surveys were analyzed using the statistical package, SPSS 14 for Windows. Comparisons were based on gender and on the self-reported race/ethnicity of the participants. A comparison of attitudes related to the number of computers already in the home in addition to the school-issued laptop was also conducted. A variety of statistical analyses were used in order to determine differences in attitudes between the boys and girls surveyed and the interactions between the attitudes of the respondents and their race/ethnicity. This was a non-experimental, quantitative, comparative research study.
