Abstract:
Notre thèse porte sur les " étapes " initiatiques, c'est-à-dire les moments capitaux, les nœuds du récit permettant à un héros de passer de l'état de profane à l'état d'initié. Cette thèse, appartenant à la littérature comparée, étudie ce thème chez quatre auteurs de quatre langues différentes ( l'allemand, l'anglais, le français et l'italien ), ayant vécu à cheval sur le dix-neuvième et le vingtième siècle, en le limitant à des œuvres narratives. Plus précisément, le corpus consiste en quatre romans de Huysmans, cinq romans de D'Annunzio, trois romans et deux nouvelles de Henry James et l'œuvre en prose entière de Hofmannsthal. L'époque de référence nous oblige à cerner d'abord la notion cardinale d'esthétisme et ses corollaires. Cette mise au point aide à dégager, dans la deuxième partie, le trajet individuel de chaque auteur se libérant progressivement de la chape esthétisante. Il s'avère qu'il existe deux types principaux d'initiation : l'amour et la connaissance, mais qu'elle peut échouer ( initiation négative ) ou aboutir à des résultats diamétralement opposés. Sont aussi apparues des constantes entourant les initiations, étudiées dans la dernière partie. En plus des êtres et objets initiatiques, nous analysons la façon dont le double, l'abîme, l'ascension, le labyrinthe, le jardin et la ville de Venise facilitent ou ralentissent l'accès du profane à une réalité supérieure
Our thesis treats of " initiatic stages ", that is to say the key moments, the knots of the narration allowing a hero to be moved up from the state of layman to the state of initiate. This thesis, belonging to comparative literature, studies this theme in four authors of four different languages ( the English, French, German and Italian languages ), who lived in both the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, restricting the study to the narrative works. More precisely, the corpus is composed of four novels by Huysmans, five novels by D'Annunzio, three novels and two short stories by Henry James and the entire work in prose by Hofmannsthal. The reference age compells us first to define the important notion of estheticism and its corollaries. This basis helps to set off, in the second part, the personal evolvement of each author freeing oneself gradually from the burden of estheticism. It appears that there are two main kinds of initiation : love and knowledge, but that it may fail, being a negative initiation, or lead to diametrically opposite results. Several constants regarding initiation also appeared and are analysed in the last part. In addition to initiatic beings and objects, we study the way the double, the abyss, the ascension, the labyrinth, the garden and the town of Venice facilitate or delay the access of the layman to an upper reality

Comment s’articulent, autour des rapports entre l’homme et la nature, les pratiques scientifiques du naturaliste et du géographe, une pensée politique s’étendant du libéralisme à l’anarchisme et un style d’écrivain ? C’est la question que posent, singulièrement à la forme de l’essai, les œuvres d’Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), de Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) et d’Élisée Reclus (1830-1905). Dans un large XIXème siècle à envisager comme période révolutionnaire marquée par l’effacement des terræ incognitæ, le recul de la nature « sauvage » et les soubresauts économiques et politiques (Révolution Industrielle et révolutions politiques faisant se succéder les régimes), ces figures qu’il faut relire comme d’authentiques écrivains allient au sein d’une politique de la nature la géographie de la Terre à celle de l’Homme, et leurs expériences personnelles de la nature (du voyage d’exploration à l’habitat) à une pensée de la communauté allant et venant de l’individu à l’humanité, du micro- au macrocosme. Héritiers des Lumières luttant contre l’esclavage, le despotisme et le colonialisme, qu’ils documentent, ces essayistes qui refusent de laisser la science aux mains d’une caste positiviste et ethnocentriste sont les vulgarisateurs et les prophètes d’une démocratie littéraire en construction. Ils sont les pionniers d’une exploration moderne des rapports entre écriture et connaissance, les témoins essentiels d’une différenciation des savoirs que leur pratique littéraire universaliste entend conjurer. How can the naturalist’s and the geographer’s scientific enquiries, a political thought ranging from liberalism to anarchism, and a writer’s style all revolve around the relationship between Man and Nature ? Such is a question raised —especially with regards to the Essay genre— by the works of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and Élisée Reclus (1830-1905). Within the bounds of a longer 19th century, which can be seen as an age of revolutions marked by the fading off of terræ incognitæ, the dwindling of the Wilderness, and a series of economical and political fits (Industrial and Political revolutions triggering the succession of strings of regimes), it appears critical to reconsider these names as those of genuine authors. From the heart of a politics of nature, they bind together the geographies of Man and the Earth, and their personal experience of Nature (as explored or inhabited) with a thought of community ceaselessly shifting from the Individual to the Human Kind, from the Microcosm to the Macrocosm. These Essay writers are the heirs of the Enlightenment in their struggle against slavery, despotism and colonialism (which they document); they object to leaving science in the hand of a positivistic, ethnocentric caste —they are the authors of popular sciences and the prophets of a literary democracy in the making. They are the pioneers of a modern exploration of the relationship between writing and knowledge, the crucial witnesses of a gradual differentiation of sciences that their universalistic literary paradigm sets out to avert. The ultimate point is to carry on approaching Nature as a whole (cosmos) in an era bringing about its division, as an object, into two separate categories of literary creation and scholarly knowledge. In the dawning light of literary ecology, and in this world description in which all things depend on all things, the work of the Essay-writer seems to be the only one able to voice this complex speech, made of politics, science and literature all together

1. ACTUALITY OF THIS RESEARCH: Sixty-five percent of teachers in secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Transvaal Education Department are female. The professionalism, work motivation and work satisfaction of female teachers are often questioned possibly owing to the ostensible discriminatory conditions of service meted out to female teachers. In this research it is postulated (and confirmed by the literature study) that a distinct set of needs applies to female teachers. It is important for the leaders in education, (e.g. headmasters, heads of department) to be conversant with these special needs which may influence female teachers' motivation to work. The general aim of this research can therefore be related to the question: Which factors influence the female teacher's motivation to work? Specific aims of this research are inter alia: to determine - by means of a questionnaire - whether the female teacher's professional needs and aspirations are being met in education; to determine the discrepancy (if any) between the female teacher's needs and the satisfaction thereof; to identify factors to be remedied. 2. METHOD OF RESEARCH: A questionnaire, based on the study of relevant literature and encompassing the same needs as those of the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire was designed, but with the additional purpose to determine also the extent to which these needs are being satisfied in education. Twenty-seven of the 24 7 secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Transvaal Education Department were selected at random and the research sample consisted of all 806 female teachers attached to these schools. The empirical data was statistically processed by means of a CHAID analysis. 3. INTERPRETATION OF EMPIRICAL DATA: Female teachers who participated in this research indicated the need for an amicable relationship with their pupils as the need which motivated them to harder work. The need for compatibility between their role as mother/homemaker and their role as teacher featured strongly in the responses. Needs relating to the need for compatibility of roles, such as the need for a fair work load, the need for fair working hours (extramural activities and preparation included) were rated highly. Extrinsic needs such as salary and security were also regarded as fairly important. The empirical data reveals that the female teacher's social needs are sufficiently satisfied. Extrinsic needs such as security, fair application of school policy and reasonable supervision are also satisfied. Needs which enjoy little or no satisfaction relate to administrative or policy aspects of education such as salary, fair evaluation for merit and promotion, participation in decision-making and the need for a fair work load. Female heads of department experienced more work satisfaction and satisfaction of their needs than teachers on post level 1. Female teachers in temporary posts showed a significant lack of motivation. English speaking teachers were significantly less satisfied with the application of school policy. Afrikaans-speaking female teachers' need to achieve and their need for more authority were significantly less satisfied than those of their English-speaking counterparts. Married female teachers were more satisfied with their salaries, but those with pre-school children experienced less satisfaction with regard to their extramural involvement and were more dissatisfied with their work load. A significant number of female teachers indicated (unnecessary) administrative work as a demotivating factor. 4. CONCLUSION: Most female teachers are not satisfied with extrinsic factors such as salary (especially the disparity between the salary of male and female teachers) . Extrinsic factors, however, do not contribute directly towards the female teacher's relationship with her pupils, her pride in her work, her self-esteem, and her love for her particular subject - these are the factors which really determine her motivation. The married female teacher's circumstances at home will determine her career commitment and influence her motivation to work.

The Problem addressed in this Research is the role fulfilled by management councils in school management on behalf of the parents. Through a survey of the literature the historical background, and the judicial and educational basis of parental say in education is investigated. Parental representation by management councils and non-statutary bodies such as the TAO (Transvaalse Afrikaanse Ouervereniging) and TEMPA (Transvaal English Medium Parent Association), is evaluated; co-operation between management councils and non-statutary bodies is discussed and brief attention is given to parents' evenings as an informal manner of parental say in education. From the above-mentioned survey it becomes apparent that both parents and schools have an educational duty; that parents have to be involved in the school; that parents have to be represented in the school officially by the management council. The importance, regarding their management assignments and the degree of execution of their management tasks; their knowledge, regarding their statutary given assignments; the necessity of training of management council members; the methods that may be used to improve parental involvement in education and the co-operation between management councils and non-statutary parental organizations is empirically investigated. From the empirical investigation it seems apparent that management councils regard their duties as important and that they successfully execute these duties; that members of management councils possessed a satisfactory amount of knowledge regarding the execution of their statutary delineated duties, but that training is necessary; that parental involvement may be improved in a number of ways; and that co-operation between management councils and the parents' organizations is satisfactory. Recommendations forwarded through this investigation are that management councils should be involved in school management to a greater degree; receive training to improve the execution of their management tasks; be made more aware of their assignments regarding personnel, pupil and curriculum management; strive to attain a greater degree of parental involvement and to facilitate greater co-operation between themselves and the parents' organizations.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at giving a scientific answer to the following problem questions, namely, what communication apprehension connotes: whether students in a parallel medium school suffer from communication apprehension; which factors cause communication apprehension in the classroom, and what measures the teacher can take to prevent or overcome communication apprehension in the classroom. To answer these questions, a literature study on communication apprehension was first undertaken. Communication models and the evaluation of such models were investigated. Communication as a phenomenon was also applied to the classroom situation, and the conclusion was reached that interaction is a prerequisite for communication, and, consequently, also for effective teaching. Communication apprehension interferes with the success of the communication process in the classroom, as well as with the teaching-learning process. To delineate communication apprehension more clearly, the causes of communication apprehension and its influence on the teaching-learning situation were also studied. Guidelines for preventing and overcoming communication apprehension were lastly investigated. The empirical study was based on the completion of the PRCA (Personal Report on Communication Apprehension) by students from a parallel medium school in Klerksdorp, namely the Alabama Secondary School. The following results were obtained: • An average communication apprehension of 62,5% for Afrikaans speaking students versus an average of 63,4% for students speaking other languages. • The average percentage of communication apprehension for students whose mother tongue is Afrikaans is quite high, whether they communicate in Afrikaans (60,2%) or English (64,3%). • The average percentage of communication apprehension for students whose mother tongue is other than Afrikaans is quite high, whether they communicate in Afrikaans (66,0%) or English (59,2%). • The average percentage of communication apprehension of girls is somewhat higher than that of boys. • The communication apprehension of the students is the highest when they participate in public debates, and the lowest when they participate in ordinary conversations. • A fear of failure, a lack of confidence, and the teaching style of the teacher are endorsed as possible causes of communication apprehension, while a lack of communication skills is not a major cause. • The responses of the teachers identified guidelines for preventing and overcoming communication apprehension in students, of which some are in line with the literature, and others are new interesting ideas. Research on communication apprehension in parallel medium schools ought to be extended to include students from primary schools as well. The apprehension of all students to communicate in their mother tongue should also be investigated. The high level of communication apprehension in students ought to be investigated with the aim of developing programmes for inhibiting communication apprehension in students.

The purpose of this thesis is to look into and to investigate the evaluation of disciplinary measures. Research has been done in order to: • establish which pedagogical and juridical guidelines are to be considered when implementing disciplinary measures, • to establish which of these measures are to be used in primary schools, and • to evaluate such disciplinary measures. To achieve these goals a literary study and 3IJ empirical investigation have been completed. In the literary study specific attention has been paid to the evaluation of disciplinary measures with reference to laws, regulations and departmental guidelines. A synopsis in connection with the juridical and pedagogical character of disciplinary measures has been completed especially as far as the following aspects are concerned: authority, order, discipline, the principles of judiciary education, the disposition of educative discipline, directives for disciplinary measures, reasons for pupils being undisciplined and forms of disciplinary measures. An empirical investigation has clearly indicated problems experienced by principals of primary schools. Limitations concerning the evaluation of disciplinary measures and ways of implementing in-service training, have been established. It has been concluded that some principals do not possess of any qualifications in connection with educational management. Principals should establish which instruments are suitable for corporal punishment, which teachers are allowed to inflict such punishment with the principal's consent and where such punishment should be administered. The disciplinary climate in the school and that at home has much in common. Corporal punishment cannot be done away with. Principals should also try to ascertain the reasons for undisciplined conduct in schools and how verbal and non-verbal disciplinary measures can be sophisticated. Guidelines have been laid down and recommendations have been made for the evaluation of disciplinary measures by principals in the primary schools in the Transvaal.

Abstract:
The focus of this study is to suggest guidelines for the implementation of a character education program in high schools. It has become clearly evident, from the literature that character education is of cardinal importance for instruction and education. The breakdown of values in South Africa is leading to an increase in crime in the country, which will have far-reaching consequences if learner crime is not addressed. Character education could offer a possible solution and make learners realise the difference between "right" and "wrong" as well as to say "no" to drugs, alcohol, sex, gangs and other social problems. A literature study was done to highlight the nature and scope of behaviour problems in overseas schools as well as South African schools. There was also looked at the impact of violence on the culture of instruction and learning as well as the external and internal factors that can play a role in violence within schools. Furthermore, the concept of character education was investigated as well as character education as possible solution to behavioural problems in high schools. There was also looked at whether character education does indeed produce positive results. Different character education programs that have already been implemented successfully abroad were investigated. Smart & Good High Schools seem suitable for the South African situation and could easily be adapted to the circumstances of individual schools. This program ascribes to the view that the best high schools have two main objectives in common, namely: to help learners to become smart - in the multi-dimensional sense of intelligence - and to help them become good - in the multi-dimensional sense of moral maturity. It is, therefore, about excellence and ethics. Lickona and Davidson (2005) mention schools that are committed to both these objectives, Smart & Good High Schools. Guidelines for the implementation of a character education program arose from discussing the program. In order to determine in what areas character education are needed with learners; how parents evaluate the character education of the learners of the school; what teachers are presently doing to promote character education; and how the learners' values changed within the scope of six months, questionnaire surveys were used. Questionnaires were given to learners wherein they had to judge their own values and that of their fellow learners. Questionnaires were given to parents asking their opinions on the values currently displayed by learners of the relevant school; what parents would like see with the learners; the character traits of the learners; and which traits the school should promote. Questionnaires were also distributed to the teachers of the school to determine to what extent particular promising practices are being pursued to promote character education with learners. A test sample of Grade 8 to 12 learners also filled out a revised questionnaire to determine to what extent these practices were indeed being applied in the classroom. The primary objective of the survey was to determine the character education practices of a particular high school in the North-West Province and to suggest guidelines for the implementation of a character education program. The empirical survey aided in achieving this objective. Findings of some concern, within the scope of six months, related to the general deterioration in the behaviour/habits of the learners at the school, inter alia the number of learners who smoke, drink, are aware of those who use drugs as well an increase in learners who tested positive for HIV/AIDS. In addition, almost half the learners indicated that they find it difficult to say "no" to negative peer pressure. It has been concluded that character education in schools offer a definite solution and that such a program can be integrated effectively into the existing curriculum.
