Abstract:

In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren entstand in Görlitz, das bereits im 19. Jahrhundert den Ruf einer Gartenstadt innehatte, eine Reihe von Grünanlagen, die sich durch farbenfrohe Blumenpflanzungen, hochwertige Natursteinarbeiten und anspruchsvolle Gehölzverwendung auszeichneten. Zu verdanken war dies dem geschickten und verdienstvollen Wirken des Görlitzer Gartenbaudirektors Henry Kraft (1899–1979). In jene Zeit fällt auch die Anlegung des Görlitzer Berggartens. Der Beitrag erläutert dessen Geschichte ausgehend von seinen Ursprüngen, die bis in die Kriegszeit zurückreichen, über dessen Umwandlung zur öffentlichen Grünanlage in der DDR bis hin zur aktuellen Situation.

Henry Purcells Satztechnik, namentlich seine Behandlung von Chromatik und Dissonanz, ist häufig sehr eigenartig. Wenig fruchtbar sind Versuche, sie mit französischen, italienischen oder gar deutschen Traditionen in Verbindung zu bringen. Purcells ganz eigene Verfahrensweisen waren wohl nur in einer musikhistorischen Epoche möglich, in der das verblassende System der Modi und die theoretisch noch nicht greifbare Dur-Moll-Tonalität neue Freiräume des Komponierens eröffneten. Unter der Bezeichnung »Fordismus« wird in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur die Verbindung von Massenproduktion mit durch hohe Löhne möglich gewordener Massenkonsumtion bezeichnet, als deren Vorreiter Henry Ford gilt. Der Artikel bemüht sich dieses Bild von Ford zu korrigieren: die in Fords PR-Abteilung produzierte Ideologie werde mit der Realität verwechselt. Darüber hinaus werden die Widersprüche aufgezeigt, die eine Analyse des Nachkriegskapitalismus mit dem Konzept »Fordismus« mit sich bringt.

Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von der „Krise des Sakramentalen“ wird vorgeschlagen, das „Wie“ des Sakramentes, nicht das „Was“ neu zu erschließen. Dazu werden zunächst Grundzüge der Lebensphänomenologie von Michel Henry rekonstruiert, um anschließend Überlegungen im Versuch einer hermeneutisch-epistemologischen Anwendung das „Wie“ des Sakramentes als das In-Erscheinung-Treten des absoluten Lebens zu erschließen. Sakramente können damit als das In-Erscheinung-Tretens des Stiftungsereignisses des absoluten Lebens gedacht werden.

Abstract Anhand der in verschiedenen Versionen überlieferten Legende von der Begegnung des Franziskus mit Sultan Melek al-Kamil in Damiette wird das dialektische Verhältnis von Geschehen, Geschichten und Geschichte aufgezeigt. Zu diesem Zweck werden sämtliche diese Legende enthaltenden Quellen des 13. Jahrhunderts (Jakob von Vitry, die Chroniken des sog. Ernoul und des Jordan von Giano, die Versvita des Henry von Avranches, die Viten des Thomas von Celano und Bonaventuras) tendenz- und traditionskritisch auf ihre Intention im Blick auf die jeweilige Leserschaft befragt. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die literarische (Re-)Konstruktion des Lebens des Franziskus zumeist von normativen Vorgaben geprägt war, die nicht nur die erzählten Geschichten, sondern auch die von diesen Geschichten geprägte Geschichte beeinflussten. Der Wert dieser Quellen für die historische Erkenntnis liegt also weniger darin, dass sie Geschehenes in Erinnerung halten, sondern vielmehr darin, dass sie offenlegen, auf welche Weise die Autoren durch Rückgriff auf Vergangenes in ihre Gegenwart einwirken wollten bzw. sollten. Dies gilt für die mittelalterliche Legendenbildung ebenso wie für weite Teile der heutigen franziskanischen Franziskusforschung, in der die Legende von Damiette häufig dazu genutzt wird, Franziskus als Vorbild des interreligiösen Dialogs und der Friedensmission zu etablieren. Mit Erfolg – wie die Wahl der Stadt Assisi als Austragungsort der päpstlichen Weltgebetstage zeigt.

Zu den bedeutendsten Werken, die im Anhang des Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis aufgeführt werden, zählt die Toccata A-Dur 178. Die Autorschaft Johann Sebastian Bachs wurde jedoch häufig in Zweifel gezogen, und das Stück wurde unter anderem mit Michelangelo Rossi, Robert King und Henry Purcell in Verbindung gebracht. A Liedertafel concert at which the former Governor His Excellency Sir Henry Loch and Lady Loch were present was reported in the Illustrated Australian News and Musical Times of 1889 as follows:In the course of some remarks Lord Loch made the statement that the advancement of musical culture in Melbourne is to be attributed to the influence of Germans. Now although the community includes some excellent musicians of that nationality, the opinion expressed by our late governor is by no means in accordance with facts. It is only just that honour should be given where it is due and the untiring efforts of the English musicians in the colony in educating public taste ought to be thoroughly recognised.

Abstract:

The article covers the background and course of the invasion by the Czech ruler Přemysl Otakar II against the possession of the Duke of Bavaria Henry XIII Wittelsbach in order to regain his control over certain territories in the country’s west. Besides, Přemysl Otakar II sought to assist indirectly his cousin, the Archbishop of Salzburg, Philip of Spanheim, who was a skilled warrior but a poor spiritual prince. That was why the chapter elected the new Archbishop of Salzburg Ulrich von Kirchberg. However, Philipp Spanheim did not intend to give up his benefit so easily and started a war against Ulrich von Kirchberg and the chapter. Přemysl Otakar II invaded Bavaria with his Czech-Austrian forces in late summer of 1257. He acted extremely cruel there, impoverishing everything around. However Duke Henry XIII Wittelsbach was quickly able to mobilize his armed forces. Resistance of the Bavarians was unexpected for the Czech ruler, so he decided to conclude a truce and retreat. While crossing the river Inn near Mühldorf a wooden bridge under the pressure of Přemysl Otakar II's soldiers broke through and water took the lives of many of them. The Czech ruler himself was lucky enough to get to the thither river bank before the tragic moment. Many Czechs and Austrians had been burned to death while seeking protection in a tower that the Bavarians set on fire. Decimated forces of Přemysl Otakar II have reached up to Mühldorf, where within 9 days they held out, and then lay down their arms and were allowed to leave the city. Military campaign of 1257 had catastrophic consequences, so Přemysl Otakar II had to abandon his plans. He was forced to conclude a peace treaty with the Duke of Bavaria, Henry XIII Wittelsbach, according to which he renounced all disputed territories

Abstract:

ZusammenfassungIm Juni 1667 gelang dem französischen Arzt Jean-Baptiste Denis (ca. 1635 – 1704) in Paris die erste erfolgreiche Transfusion von Lammblut auf einen Menschen. Die Auswahl des Spendertieres erfolgte gemäß der antiken Theorie der Humoralpathologie, wonach die physischen und psychischen Eigenschaften des als friedfertig geltenden Lammes auf den Empfänger übergehen sollten. Denis zog insbesondere einen Analogieschluss von der menschlichen Ernährung mit tierischem Fleisch auf die Transfusion tierischen Blutes. Das gelungene Experiment führte in den folgenden Monaten zu einem heftigen Gelehrtenstreit, der vor allem in der englischen Zeitschrift „Philosophical Transactions“ der Londoner „Royal Society“ ausgetragen wurde. Hierbei spielte der aus Deutschland stammende Herausgeber Henry Oldenburg (1618 – 1677) eine führende Rolle, indem er die angebliche historische Priorität englischer Wissenschaftler bei der Bluttransfusion hervorhob. Durch ein Verbot des Pariser Kriminalgerichts endete diese erste Phase der Übertragung von Tierblut auf den Menschen jedoch bereits im April 1668.

In seinerManson Memorial Lecturevon 1965 hat Henry Chadwick eine Lanze dafür gebrochen, die Literatur des hellenistischen Judentums bevorzugt zur Erhellung der Theologie des Neuen Testaments heranzuziehen und nicht von den neu entdeckten Qumran-Schriften verdrängen zu lassen.1Sein Plädoyer scheint, was Philo betrifft, nicht allzu viel bewegt zu haben; jedenfalls nennt das Register der Philo-Bibliographie von Roberto Radice und David Runia nach 1966 nur eine einzige Untersuchung zum Thema ‘Paulus und Philo’ im ganzen.2Anscheinend können sich Exegeten, die auf Paulus eingeschworen sind, nur wenig für Philo erwärmen3. Dafür gibt es sicher Gründe im unterschiedlichen Profil dieser beiden Theologen; aber es könnte auch damit zusammenhängen, daβ die Wirkungsgeschichte des einen und das Image des anderen unnötig weit auseinanderklaffen. De apostel Paulus spreekt in één van zijn brieven over ‘de verduistering van het verstand’ — een verduistering die het gevolg is van zonde. In het werk van een groot aantal filosofen uit de westerse filosofische traditie heeft dit woord van Paulus op een of andere wijze weerklank gevonden. Bij Augustinus, Anselmus, Thomas van Aquino, Jonathan Edwards, Kierkegaard, John Henry Newman en Franz von Baader bijvoorbeeld, en in ons land bij Abraham Kuyper en Herman Dooyeweerd, vindt men reflecties over de noëtische gevolgen van de zonde. Deze denkers hebben de noëtische doorwerking van de zonde onder meer aangewezen in de volgende verschijnselen: (a) dat mensen allerlei onware gedachten hebben (b) dat onze kenvermogens lang niet altijd naar behoren functioneren, zoals onder andere blijkt uit geheugenzwakte, misperceptie en foutief redeneren (c) dat mensen het vaak onderling oneens zijn. In dit artikel wil ik onderzoeken hoe deze thematiek is verwerkt door Herman Dooyeweerd, wiens streven het steeds is geweest een ‘christelijke wijsbegeerte’ te ontwerpen. Der Artikel beschreibt den Forschungsstand zu Erfolgsfaktoren für Manager als Expatriates in Ost-Europa in deutschen Tochterunternehmen. Es wurden für diesen Zweck 31 deutsche Top Manager in Bulgarien, Polen, Rumänien, Slowakei, Tschechien und in Ungarn befragt. 12 Erfolgsfaktoren wurden anhand eines Fragebogens empirisch ermittelt, der häufig in Großunternehmen vor der Entsendung genutzt wird. Weiter wurde aus der Kultur-Standardforschung ein Fragebogen eingesetzt, der besonders für die Forschung in Osteuropa verwendet wurde. Weitere 12 Erfolgsfaktoren wurden literaturbasiert ermittelt. Hierbei wurden besonders Erfolgsfaktoren aus der Managementliteratur von Peter Drucker (1987, 2001, 2007), Henry Mintzberg (2009) und empirische Ergebnisses von Beratungsunternehmen berücksichtigt (ECA, 2007, Mercer, 2008, Denkwerkstatt für Manager, 2011). In einer Nachuntersuchung wurden durch Fachabteilungen von drei Dax-Unternehmen und Managern aus drei mittelständischen Unternehmen mit Ost-Europa-Aktivitäten die Forschungsergebnisse im Wesentlichen bestätigt. The previous article describes the current research on successful key management factors for top expatriates in Eastern Europe in connection with international and inter-cultural operating companies. For that reason, 31 managers of German affiliates were interviewed in Bulgaria, Czech, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. As a result of these interviews, twelve success factors could be confirmed by use of an existing check list used by German companies, and evaluation of another questionnaire about cultural standards. Furthermore, another twelve success factors could be confirmed by scientific management literature such as that of Peter Drucker (1987. 2001, 2007), Henry Mintzberg (2009) and empirical research by different consulting companies (ECA, 2007, Mercer, 2008). In a follow-up examination the results have been confirmed by 3 big international trading companies and with present Managers in East-Europe middle-sized companies. Durch literaturwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen sind wir gut über die Stereotypen unterrichtet, die die antikatholische Propaganda über das Verhältnis zwischen Frauen und Klerikern konstruierte. Die konkreten Zusammenhänge sind jedoch noch weitgehend unerforscht. Das will der vorliegende Beitrag ändern, indem er von Klerikern verfaßte „Lebensgeschichten“ katholischer Frauen, kirchliche Korrespondenzen und die Berichte verschiedener Regierungsbehörden analysiert. Die Untersuchung von vier Fällen (Margaret Clitherow und John Mush; Anne, Countess of Arundel, und Robert Southwell, S. J.; Anne Vaux und Henry Garnet, S.J.; Dorothy Lawson und William Palmes, S. J.) macht deutlich, daß sich häufig enge und komplexe Beziehungen zwischen katholischen Frauen und ihren Beichtvätern entwickelten, die durchaus in der Lage waren, den frühmodernen Patriarchalismus einzuschränken.

Henry Boynton Smith (1815–1877) was one of the few nineteenth-century American scholars committed to disseminating German methods of ecclesiastical historiography to a country known for its anti-historical tendencies. However, modern scholars have generally overlooked his significant contributions in this area. Hence exploring his scholarly reception and specifically his History of the Church of Christ, in Chronological Tables will fill a niche in the historiography of church history.Philip Schaff (1819–1893), the renowned church historian and founder of the American Society of Church History, was one of the few contemporaries of Smith who understood that Smith's scholarship was on a par with that being produced in Germany. Schaff specifically praised Smith's chronological tables—evidence of Smith's German education among some of the best German historians of the period, including Leopold von Ranke and August Neander. This essay reviews Smith's History of the Church of Christ, in Chronological Tables in the context of the newly emerging scientific history and describes his contribution to nineteenth-century American scholarship. Smith is worthy of attention for establishing a central position for the history of doctrine and for promoting the field of church history and the use of chronological tables in nineteenth-century America.

This article discusses the close relationship that developed during the 1850s and 1860s between Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–94), one of the leading German scientists during the second half of the nineteenth century, and the British scientific elite generally. It focuses especially on the importance of the law of conservation of energy to both sides of that relationship as the law emerged and became popularized. In presenting this Anglo-German relationship, the article relates Helmholtz's friendships or acquaintanceships with numerous members of the British elite, including William Thomson, John Tyndall, Henry Enfield Roscoe, Michael Faraday, Edward Sabine, Henry Bence Jones, George Gabriel Stokes, James Clerk Maxwell, Peter Guthrie Tait, George Biddell Airy and James Thomson. It suggests that the building of these social relationships helped create a sense of trust between Helmholtz and the British elite that, in turn, eased the revision of the understanding of the law of conservation of force into that of energy and consolidated its acceptance, and that laid the personal groundwork for Helmholtz's future promotion of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory in Germany and for Anglo-German agreements in electrical metrology.

Georg von Neumayer played a central role in building the foundations of Australian meteorology and in shaping the global framework of cooperation under the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the forerunner of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Though his time in Australia was relatively brief, his name stands alongside those of Lieutenant William Dawes (active from 1788-1791), Sir Thomas Brisbane (1822-24), Robert Ellery (1863-1895), Sir Charles Todd (1856-1906), Clement Wragge (1883-1903) and Henry Chamberlain Russell (1859-1904) in the short list of Australia’s outstanding meteorological pioneers; and with Lt. Matthew Fontaine Maury, Admiral Robert FitzRoy and Professors C.H.D. Buys Ballot, H. Wild and E. Mascart in building the 19th century framework for international cooperation in meteorology, especially through his role as President of the International Polar Commission which organised the First International Polar Year (1882-83). This paper provides a brief overview of the origins of Australian meteorology and of the 1873 establishment and early work of the IMO in providing the international framework for cooperation in meteorology until its replacement by the intergovernmental WMO in 1950.

Abstract:

The main aim of the paper is reconstruction of the concept of Bildung (considered as forming the man’s personality) in an educational novel entitled Henry von Ofterdingen written by Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg). Novalis’s novel – inspired by Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister Lehrejahre – is one of the most original early romantic works which prove the importance of the idea of Bildung for German culture at the beginning of the 19th century. In the first part of the text the author discusses the literary image of Bildung presented in the plot of the novel and then indicates its inner contradiction. In the second part of the article the author reconstructs the philosophical roots of this ideal regarding Novalis’s notion of Bildung in light of the thought of German idealism (transcendental philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte in particular) because the theory of romantic progressive poetry (elaborated most fully by Friedrich Schlegel) originates there. The perspective taken in the paper allows the author to reveal the universal significance of the inner contradiction of the romantic idea of forming man’s personality as a sign of the fundamental crisis of the modern ideal of humanity.

In April 1880, one of the most intriguing lost opportunities in musical-literary history took place. Henry James and Richard Wagner were staying in Posilippo, near Naples. James was beginning a two-month visit to Italy, whilst Wagner was living in the Italian town with his family, working on essays including ‘Religion und Kunst’ (1880) and preparing the staging for Parsifal (1882). A mutual friend, Paul von Joukowsky, suggested to James that he and Wagner meet but the offer provoked an emphatic rejection from the American novelist. It would have taken place amid the heady bohemianism, homosexuality and obsessive aestheticism of Wagner's Italian circle of which Joukowsky was a part. No doubt their meeting would have been stilted and strained, suffused with various forms of social awkwardness, yet, as we shall see, James's explanation of his refusal has the overtones of a justification. Despite – or because of – the aborted meeting, James repeatedly returned to this unrealized encounter in his writing. He referred to the composer or his works in more than a dozen of his novels and short stories from the 1880s to the early twentieth century; these muted but resonant references suggest an informed and engaged response to Wagner and his works. It is as if, though these allusions, James re-imagined this event, composer and novelist encountering each other in numerous texts over a period of 20 years

Late twentieth- and early twenty-first century fiction has witnessed a surge of interest in Henry James, his life and works. Most of these recent Jamesian (re-)engagements are concerned with the body, with James's (still) questionable homosexuality, or with his direct involvement in the literary marketplace. John Banville's 1984 novella, The Newton Letter, is a literary forerunner of this renewed preoccupation with James and Jamesian concerns in contemporary fiction. Differing from more recent novels such as Colm Tóibín's The Master (2004) and David Lodge's Author, Author (2004), Banville's engagement with James does not centre around the portrayal of sexuality or accrued literary/monetary capital. Rather, Banville follows James in his concern with unstable and indeterminate meaning. This essay establishes that indeterminacy through an investigation of the novella's rich textual and intertextual archive. Hitherto critics have commonly assumed the novella's intertextual centre to lie in the works of Hugo von Hoffmanstahl and Wolfgang Goethe. By uncovering its composition history and studying the unpublished materials relating to the project, this essay demonstrates Banville's ongoing engagement with Jamesian concerns, most importantly with tropes of reading and/or writing, and the construction of subjectivity through these tropes.

Durch Erbschaften finanziell einigermaßen unabhängig, unternimmt sie ausgedehnte Exkursionen in Südeuropa, dem Nahen Osten und Nordafrika, schließlich ausgedehnte Sammlungsreisen in alle Erdteile im Auftrag vor allem britischer und amerikanischer Museen und Sammler. Der syrische Christ Khalil Neimy, 15 Jahre jünger als sie, wurde 1901 ihr ständiger Begleiter als Schmetterlingsfänger und bis zu seinem frühen Tod 1929 auch ihr Lebensgefährte. Abstract:

Public Health – mit diesem Begriff verbinden sich Hoffnungen auf Gesundheit für alle, auf Vernunft und Evidenz-gestützte Rationalität im Gesundheitswesen, auf eine Landes- und Sprachgrenzen überwindende, internationale bzw. globale Anstrengung im Dienst an der Gesundheit und dem Wohlergehen der Menschen (siehe z. B. auch das Ziel 3 für nachhaltige Entwicklung der Vereinten Nationen). Die Suche nach einer allgemein anerkannten deutschen Bezeichnung für Public Health ist bisher noch offen. Dabei steht nach Ansicht von William Henry Welch und Wickliff Rose, Autoren des einflussreichen Welch-Rose-Reports von 1915, die Wiege moderner Public Health auch in Deutschland 1. Ihr Bericht führte zur Gründung der traditionsreichen Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore (USA). Welch und Rose bezogen sich dabei auf das Pettenkofersche Hygiene-Institut in München, damals weltweit einzigartig. Bezeichnenderweise wird im Welch-Rose-Report auf die „doppelte“ Natur einer in den Naturwissenschaften verankerten, hygienebasierten Public-Health-Bewegung in Deutschland und einer sozialwissenschaftlich-verwaltungspraktisch ausgerichteten, in ihrem Gebiet ebenfalls führenden, Public-Health-Kultur in Großbritannien hingewiesen. Die naheliegende Chance für die Zukunft wurde damals in einer Verbindung beider Ansätze gesehen.
