Abstract:
Because of continuous blood transfusions, thalassemia patients are subjected to peroxidative tissue injury by the secondary iron overload. In accordance, analysis of serum from 42 beta-thalassemia patients, aged 4 to 40 years, showed that the mean concentrations of conjugated diene lipid hydroperoxides (CD), lipoperoxides evaluated as malondialdehyde/ thiobarbituric acid (MDA/TBA) adducts, and protein carbonyls increased about twofold with respect to control. Ferritin levels were positively correlated with the amount of MDA (r = .41; P = .007) and showed a positive trend with CD (r = .31; P =

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn flowers..Carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic injury in rats and pentobarbitone induced hypnosis methods were used to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity. Alteration in biochemical parameters of hepatic damage, such as alanine transminase (ALT), aspartate transminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), triglycerides (TG), cholesterol, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin and pentobarbitone induced sleeping time were tested in different groups of study. Abstract:
High response rates have been reported with hepatic intra-arterial infusions of floxuridine in patients having colorectal carcinoma metastatic to the liver. The major toxicity of this therapy has been described as "chemical hepatitis." In a randomized trial of intravenous v intra-arterial floxuridine, we observed that all 35 patients receiving intra-arterial therapy developed significant increases in alkaline phosphatase and, in some cases, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transminase and/or bilirubin. Seven patients receiving intra-arterial therapy were studied with cholangiography which, in all ca

Introduction: Identifying left aberrant hepatic artery during gastrectomy for cancer is occasional. In case of replaced left hepatic artery, its ligation can lead to hepatic injury or ischemia, while preserving it can cause difficulties during lymphadenectomy. In literature there is no consensus regarding preserving replaced left hepatic artery during gastrectomy for cancer. A recent study, analysing adverse effects of ligating an aberrant left hepatic artery, shows in pacients with over 5 times elevated transaminase levels, increase in hospital length and postoperative complications. The effects of the daily administration of aluminium (25 mg kg-1, orally), ethanol (10% v/v, in drinking water) or both to adult rats, for 6 weeks, on the amount of aluminium present in the tissues and the functioning of brain biogenic amines, hepatic and serum transaminases and some haematopoietic variables were investigated. Ethanol alone was seen to inhibit the activity of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD), while aluminium alone elevated the activity of blood ALAD. However, aluminium and ethanol combined produced a more pronounced inhibition of blood ALAD and hepatic glutamic pyruvic
