Gelber, David. "Heraldry, heralds and the Earl Marshal of England, c.1480-1603 : war, politics and diplomacy." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.560452.

Abstract:
Heraldry, heralds and the Earl Marshal played a conspicuous part in English life during the period c.1480-1603. This thesis explores their significance in the military, diplomatic and court cultures of the period. In four thematic parts, it seeks to reveal their crucial importance in the politics and government of the period. The first section explores the changing status of royal heraldry and heralds, as chivalric culture took on a more monarchical bent and ideas of sovereignty crystallized. It attempts to demonstrate how the royal coat of anus and heralds became emblems of sovereign authority and imperial kingship. The second section investigates the role of heralds in war, politics and diplomacy, exploring the divers ways in which they were employed at home and abroad. It endeavours to explain the relative decline of their international responsibilities, and the persistence of their domestic functions. The third section examines how reforms at the English court and changes in the heralds' . internal affairs helped to re orient their activities towards armorial matters. It looks at the reasons why grants of arms, noble funerals and heraldic visitations came gradually to dominate the heralds' activities, and how the intersection of patronage and ideology drove changes to the rules governing the bearing of anus. The fourth section examines how one of the great officers of state, the Earl Marshal, exploited his military and heraldic jurisdiction for political advancement during the sixteenth century. It seeks to show how a symbiotic relationship between the heralds and the Earl Marshal gradually developed, driven by needs of patronage and mutual interest.

Grummitt, Elaine Jennifer. "Heraldic imagery in seventeenth-century English poetry." Thesis, Durham University, 2000. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4333/.

Full text
Abstract:
The significance of heraldic references in literature has been the subject of both antiquarian interest and recent scholarship. In the field of seventeenth-century poetry, there exists a small body of published work concerned with the use of heraldry by William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Jolin Cleveland. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the existence and significance of heraldic references in a wider range of seventeenth-century verse and poetry. It eschews assumptions regarding the use of heraldry by, or with reference to, a narrow social elite, and examines heraldic references published in broadsheets and used in songs, as well as in the privately- circulated manuscripts of the nobility. Chapter One offers a critical examination of a range of current scholarship concerned with heraldic readings of literature. Chapter Two demonstrates that formal heraldic references, affirming or celebrating their subject’s identity, were used in diverse genres, including dedicatory verses, encomia, epitaphs, elegies, epithalamia and anagrams. Chapter Three determines the social implications of the use of heraldry, with particular reference to epic and satirical verse, arguing that heraldic references in this period develop beyond their traditional, chivalric associations. Chapter Four discusses those works that include heraldic references as expressions of authority or political power, and considers their use in different contexts to affirm or undermine the position of individuals and groups within society. Chapter Five establishes the use of heraldry within religious or spiritual poetry and addresses whether its vocabulary was regarded as an expression of particular Christian values. Chapter Six explores the engagement of women writers with heraldry and considers how far their use of the language offered a challenge to the prevailing patriarchal culture. The Conclusion draws attention to the significance of the evolution of heraldry from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Jefferson, Joseph Michael. "The Templar lands in Lincolnshire in the early fourteenth century." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33274/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of the study is the Templar estates in Lincolnshire during the first four decades of the fourteenth century. Within this context, two themes are explored in some detail. The first theme is that of the characteristics of Templar farming and estate management as illustrated in the accounts of 1308-13 following the arrest of the Templars. The second theme is that of the fate of the former Templar properties between 1312 and 1338. The introduction gives a brief historical background to the Templars followed by the aims of the thesis and a description of the primary sources. The historiography places the present research within the context of both Templar research and that of medieval agriculture. In chapter one, the distribution of Templar properties within the Lincolnshire landscape is discussed. Based upon archaeological and documentary evidence the physical characteristics which were common to the Lincolnshire preceptories are defined. Further, those aspects which were individual to a preceptory reflecting its size and function are identified. The following three chapters concentrate on different aspects of Templar agriculture in Lincolnshire, placing them within the context of other studies of medieval agriculture. Arable farming, livestock other than sheep and sheep farming are discussed in some detail. Chapter five explores the nature of the personnel who worked on the Templar estates and those who were dependent upon them; the priests and the corrodiaries. In addition it follows the fate of the Lincolnshire Templars following their arrest in 1308. Further, it identifies the beneficiaries of Edward II's patronage using Templar property. Chapter six considers the tortuous transfer of the former Templar estates to the Hospitallers and the extent to which that was successful. The thesis is supported by extensive appendices which are themselves tabulations and calculations based upon primary sources.

Kennedy, Claire Renee. "Powerful Arms and Fertile Soil: English Identity and the Law of Arms in Early Modern England." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17032.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that the status and authority of the English gentleman is derived from the uniquely English interpretation and administration of the Law of Arms by the officers of the College of Arms — the heralds. This research examines questions of honour, genealogy, and law, as they were understood by the heralds, and their role in creating an English identity during the early modern period. The work of Simon Schaffer and Steven Shapin demonstrated that the role of the English gentleman was crucial to the origins of early modern science, in the establishment of truth in “matters of fact.” If, following Schaffer and Shapin, gentlemen played a central role in the social construction of facts, I argue that the College of Arms played a central role in the construction of gentlemen. Through the process of Visitation — which involved historical, genealogical, and chorographical investigation — the heralds ascertained who was gentle, and who was not. While the English gentleman could determine what was legitimate knowledge, it was the heralds who possessed the experience and expertise to determine who was a member of that social class; and the empirical practices for which the English gentleman scientist has been lauded, of “taking no-one’s word for it” and “seeing for oneself” already existed in the process of Visitation undertaken by the heralds, particularly those knowledgeable in the study of antiquities. Relationships between blood, honour, gender, and climate meant that the bodily and cultural identity of the English gentleman was firmly embedded in the English land.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and discuss the changing ways in which the visual art of heraldiy was perceived by the feudal aristocracy of twelfth- and thirteenth-century England. It shows how the aristocracy evolved from a military class to a courtly, chivalric class, and how this change affected art and culture. The shifts in the perceptions of heraldry reflect this important social development of the knightly class.

Moffat, Ralph Dominic. "The medieval tournament : chivalry, heraldry and reality : an edition and analysis of three fifteenth-century tournament manuscripts." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1430/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Royal Armouries collection is a codex comprising three fifteenth-century manuscripts in French. The codex is not only unpublished, it has never been transcribed or translated. The content is a primary source for the study of the medieval tournament as well as many other aspects of the elite culture of late-medieval Burgundy, England, and France. It is composed of fourteen different texts called items. This edition comprises a transcription of over 50,000 words of text in three different hands and a translation from the medieval French into English. The commentary is tripartite. The first section is a technical physical description, with an investigation of the palaeography, provenance, and miniatures of the three manuscripts. The second is a discussion of the origin of the production of the codex. It will be postulated that it was produced by heralds for heralds. In the third section explanatory notes are given to the fourteen items to allow a greater understanding of the codex. Drawing on similar primary source material, much of it unpublished, a clearer definition of the terminology employed for the various forms of combat is offered. Often subsumed under the category of ‘the tournament’, the examination of the organization and regulation of, and specialized equipment used in, these forms of combat reveals a more complicated phenomenon than is often represented in current studies.

Marshall-Baker, Anna. "Design of a device to provide visual stimulation to infants confined in incubators." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/101469.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of providing stationary and nonstationary visual stimuli to preterm infants by designing a device that met basic hospital safety requirements and fit within the incubator. A sample of 20 preterm infants were observed. Differences in responses between baseline, stationary, and nonstationary conditions were recorded using state, focal point, time attending, heart and respiratory rates. Each infant was observed on two separate days. Each observation period was divided into three 2-minute segments. On the intervention day, data were collected in a baseline, stimulus, stimulus sequence. On the nonintervention day, only baseline data were collected in the three 2-minute time· segments. Parametric and nonparametric analyses revealed significant differences in state, focal point, and heart rate between observation days. Results of state, focal point, and heart rate indicate a response to the stimulus during the first stimulus exposure period. Significant effects in state, focal point, time, period, and heart rate during the second exposure period indicate an orienting response. It is suggested that after a period of response and reorganization, the infants were able to orient to the device during the second exposure period. These results also suggest that this visual stimulation device may be helpful in long-term visual stimulation studies and interventions.

Abstract:
Heraldry has been called the "shorthand of history" and with its own specific rules, symbols and shields in use for over eight hundred years, it is still of value today. Heraldry was first used as identification method in battle, but spread to other spheres of society. Heraldry was always part of the military and is still more visible in use by the military than other parts of society. It is these rules, terminology, and symbolism that influenced the choice of topic to understand the meaning of the emblems. Heraldry is a science that studies the rules and terminology of armorial bearings, as well as the colourful and artistic emblems of individuals, families, communities or nations. In ancient times man used symbols to distinguish and to identify with his world view. Ancient man's symbolic illustrative or carved signs evolved from totems being used as emblems of identification with clan members, to flags, badges and shields used in the army and logos used as trademarks. It grew into a science of heraldry with hereditary and regulating rules and systems. Symbols can mean different things to different people, the construction and reconstruction of meaning rely on the different cultural contexts in which it is used. It is these cultural contexts and the cohesion between them that will unveil the deeper meaning and worth of heraldic emblems. The study aims at compiling a catalogue of South African Army military units by presenting the emblems of the different units to understand the significance of the emblem for its users. To achieve this an exploratory and descriptive investigation on heraldry and South African military heraldry was done, defining esprit de corps, symbolism, identity, traditions, indigenous elements and totemism. The study focuses on the period 1994 to 2014 to give a snapshot of emblems in use during this period. It was mostly the emblems of higher headquarters that changed. The colours of the old flag of orange, white and blue changed to green, gold or yellow, red, blue, black and white. In spite of changes, the unit emblem still forged a strong bond of identity amongst members.

Abstract:
There are few or even no greater and particular works about the heraldry of Nagurskiai, especially Gorskiai, although sources of heraldry can be found. The work seeks to determine both the belonging of coats of arms, seals to a particular person, family and marital relations, kinship, occupied positions, received awards. This new research and its results could broaden knowledge about relatives of the noblemen Gorskiai and Nagurskiai. The aim of the work is to analyze and reveal the development of the heraldry of the noblemen Nagurskiai and Gorskiai from the 17th century till the 19th century. Performing the research, their armorial seals and iconographic material of the 18th-19th centuries which show their coats of arms are used. It should be noted that emigrants from Poland, noblemen Nagurskiai and Gorskiai, arrived in Žemaitija in the 16th century. They began to settle, expand their possessions and relate to people of that region. The formation of the heraldry traditions in Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Duchy of Žemaitija has been discussed in the work. The origin, development and use of coats of arms which belonged to Gorskiai and Nagurskiai have been analyzed. The coat of arms of Nagurskiai is related to Polish Pobogo coat of arms and is treated as its equivalent. The coat of arms of Nagurskiai shows a horseshoe which is pierced by an arrow, there are three plumes of the pavonine in the helmet. Nalenčo coat of arms belonging to Gorskiai shows a white shawl. Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1555) was a highly skilled and innovative printmaker working around the area of Westphalia during the sixteenth century. He used complex systems of allegory and adapted established visual codes, such as those of traditional heraldry, to engage his audience to unpack the meaning of his work and set himself apart from his contemporaries. However, due to Aldegrever’s stylistic similarities to both Albrecht Dürer and the so-called German ‘Little Masters’ working in Nuremberg, his prints are often given the short shrift by modern historians, who have considered his images unoriginal or derivative. Through a close study of Aldegrever's 1552 series of engravings depicting the Christian Virtues and Vices, this paper rectifies this scholarly oversight and attempts to restore Aldegrever's place among the great masters of the printed image in the generation immediately following Dürer. As this subject matter of Virtues and Vices was popular among printmakers and their targeted audiences, I compare Aldegrever’s series with similar works from his immediate predecessors and contemporaries to show that his Virtues and Vices are, in fact, more innovative than previously thought in their invocation of ancient texts and complex iconographic twists, and worthy of scholarly discussion on their own terms for values of effective marketability and artistic imitation.

Full text
Abstract:
It can seam surprising to dedicate such a consistent study to political sorts of a medieval fairy, on the one hand because it is common to differentiate fantasy and politics — whereas the appeal to fantasy is common to legitimate a power or to build a political community —, and on the other hand because the main branch of the Lusignan lineage, of which Mélusine is the mythical ancestor, has been exctincted since 1308. However, surprisingly, Mélusine, a marvel drawing contrasted understandings and representations, falls into multiple political dynamics. As early as the Middle Age, Mélusine incarnates diverse sorts : the expansion and the decline of the Lusignan lineage that she justifies. Manipulated for domination andlegitimation purposes, as well as to celebrate a lineage memory explored in medieval novels by Jean d’Arras (1393) and Coudrette (c.1401), Mélusine establishes herself over the centuries through literary and paraliterary texts and coats of arms as the Merlusine, the mother of the Lusignan, but also the mother of other aristocratic lineages. At the same time, from the Middle Age onwards, but in an increased way since the 20th century, this lineage figure has been disfigured, its goals have been displaced, and Mélusine can respond to multiple identity questionings related to a social class or an individual, to the Nation or to the assertion of feminist ideas

Woodward, Jennifer Kate Alice. "The ritual management of royal death in Renaissance England, 1570-1625." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1994. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/107560/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis represents the most detailed investigation into English royal funeral ceremonies 1570-1625 yet undertaken. It builds on earlier scholarship dealing with the French royal funeral and with the social history of death and burial in early modern England. When gathering my source material I consulted manuscript and early printed material at the British Library, the Bodleian Library, the Library of Westminster Abbey, the College of Arms and the Bibliothèque Nationale. My approach is to consider royal funeral rituals in terms of performance. I endeavour to place each of the royal funerals in its immediate performance and broader cultural context. The evidence is analysed using an approach which seeks to take account of both the political and affective implications of ritual. Preliminary chapters establish the form of the English heraldic funeral and the French royal funeral, and assess the impact of the English Reformation on funeral ritual. I go on to discuss the funerals of Mary Stuart, Elizabeth I, Prince Henry Stuart, Anne of Denmark and James I respectively. Included is a bridging chapter which briefly summarises the religious and cultural changes which took place under James I and their impact on funeral ritual. Royal funerals are seen as flexible rather than fixed. They were modified to meet changing political needs but such modifications were always in accord with broader cultural trends. My thesis demonstrates that royal funeral rituals were highly dependent on their performance and cultural contexts. The Epilogue looks at the implications my research has for readings of stage representations of funeral ritual and funeral symbolism in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. I show that royal funerals formed an important aspect of playhouse audience experience. Dramatists exploited that experience to show the operative nature of funeral ritual performance and the potency of its symbols for political propaganda.

Locatelli, Sofia. "Les pierres tombales de l’ancien cimetière juif du Lido de Venise : histoire, art, poésie et paléographie." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PSLEP013.

Full text
Abstract:
The Ancient Cemetery of the Lido in Venice was built in 1386: due to its favorable location just across the lagoon, the cemetery was occasionally used for defensive and military purposes. Many tombstones were lost, destroyed or reused, others were moved to a more internal area of the lagoon, which in 1774 became the official cemetery known as “New Cemetery”. Venetian tombstones are artifacts rich in history, poetry and art. Their study allows us not only to rebuild the lives and the fortunes of the community members, but also to detect meaningful aspects of the literary and artistic culture of that time. This work is a catalogue of all the 1240 tombstones incorporated in the “Ancient” cemetery of the Lido. Each gravestone presents an analysis of the architectural style of the tombs as well as the kind of stone used and an assessment of his condition, a description of the coat of arms if engraved on the stone, a paleographic analysis of the writing, a note about the poetic and grammatical features of the text and a historical commentary detailing any relevant information found in the community death records. Transcriptions and translations of the epitaphs from Hebrew to Italian have been also added for 410 tombs. This analysis is supplemented with a detailed study of the history of the cemetery and the Jewish community of Venice, as well as the poetry of epitaphs, the paleography and art. This last topic has been further explored through an architectural analysis of the tombstones and a study on the Hebrew heraldry in light of the emblems engraved on the stones of the Venetian cemetery

Jacobs, Luzuko. "The construction of 'farm killings' in the Eastern Province Herald: an ideological analysis of the Herald's farm killings' disclosure, August 1998." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002890.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the ideological inflection of the ‘farm killings’ discourse in the Eastern Province Herald articles published in August 1998. ‘Farm killings’ is a media frame which was applied to a spate of killings of people on the country’s farms since 1994. Heightened and sustained media attention on the ‘farm killings’ has lifted the phenomenon from the other ‘run-of-the-mill’ murder crimes, and located it firmly as a matter of public concern and a subject of a broad political and economic debate. In this study I investigate the media coverage of the ‘farm killings’ within the context of these debates. The cultural studies approach to the study of the media provides a fruitful theoretical framework within which this study is located. The ideological examination of the articles is done using the critical linguistics method - a brand of reflexive, interpretative style of analysis which enables a sustained examination of media texts within their social, cultural and historical context. This study’s conclusions pose a challenge to the ‘Fourth Estate’ role often claimed for the media. In particular, it denies that the Herald objectively, fairly and truthfully reflected the experience on the farms during the period of this study. Its main finding is that the newspaper instead, constructed a particular understanding of the killings characterised by subtle racism, bias and partiality.

Aspden, Reuben S. "Heralded quantum imaging." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6472/.

Full text
Abstract:
Imaging systems play a crucial role in shaping understanding of our surroundings. Modern imaging systems enable the acquisition of images of objects at length-scales and resolutions previously deemed impossible. However, as the drive for better images and novel applications increases, several questions fundamental to our understanding of imaging are being raised. We are familiar with images containing many millions of photons, but how many photons does it take to form an image? In scenarios requiring covert imaging, or where high-light levels damage the sample being imaged, is it possible to image a sample with a very small number of very low-energy photons? This thesis will focus on answering these two questions. In order to answer these questions I developed a heralded quantum imaging system. The strong spatial correlations inherent between down-converted twin photons have been utilised in many quantum imaging techniques for the past 25 years. Thus far, standard quantum imaging techniques have relied on scanning a fibre detector across the field of view in order to measure the spatial information in the image. However, the scanning mechanism fundamentally limits the detection efficiency of the imaging system. Recent years have seen an increased interest in using the latest camera technology within quantum imaging systems. The advent of single-photon-sensitive cameras has opened up new possibilities within the quantum imaging field. It is now possible to obtain images of objects by detecting very low-light illumination across the full scene simultaneously. In the heralded quantum imaging system presented in this thesis, a combination of quantum mechanics and a high-sensitivity camera was employed to obtain high contrast images containing very few photons. This was the first such system built. Using the correlations between the twin photons generated by our down-conversion source, and our development of compressive sampling techniques to post-process the acquired data enabled the acquisition of an image containing an average of only 0.5 photons per pixel. This represents a significant reduction when compared with a conventional image that contains of order 105 photons per pixel. I also developed this imaging system to use twin photons at vastly different wave- lengths. The object was probed with low-energy infrared photons whilst the image was developed on a camera using the correlated visible photon. This disparity in energy between the two photons enabled the acquisition of images using only several thousand photons, corresponding to an energy deposition on the sample of only a few pJ.

Abstract:
The original idea behind Herald was to create a South African Downton Abbey (ITV and PBS, 2010 -2015). Historical television is currently popular and Downton is appealing because it communicates interesting history, finds comedy in the manners and behaviours of the day and indulges in the visual pleasures of opulent aristocratic society. A historical setting is as foreign and exciting as a fantasy realm but it can still provide a platform to explore themes that are relevant and familiar to a contemporary viewer. Members of local government, military officers and other nobles and wealthy Britons at the Cape lived aristocratic lives not unlike the fictional inhabitants of Downton and yet a wholesale pastiche of the structure of Downton or the conventions of the period drama genre is inappropriate. The racial tensions that have defined the colonial and postcolonial periods of South African history and the Eurocentric, androcentric approach to that history necessitate a new approach. It is with this in mind that I have attempted to create a television miniseries inspired by the traditional period drama and by Downton Abbey specifically, but remoulded by the contexts of past and present day South Africa. I had several main goals in mind for this miniseries: to provide South Africans with entertaining television that tells local stories and, in so doing, encourage South Africans to engage with their own history; to grapple with contentious issues of the present such as race, gender and land, by exploring the past; to place strong black, Malay and female characters at the center of history and give them the agency to effect history; to provide a critique of the British and their actions at the Cape.

Full text
Abstract:
The key period of our study seems to be the decade of the 1660s. The French monarchy seeks to know and master its nobility. If the king grants to the nobility of dress a gradual nobility from 1644, giving with one hand the nobility after twenty years of exercise of a burden (or death coated), at the same time, with the other hand , he broke the Letters of Veterans and Letters of ennoblement granted in the years 1614 to 1664. In 1666, in order to draw up a general catalog of the nobility, Louis XIV launched the famous Investigations of the nobility which will aim to pass from oral evidence to written evidence, to freeze the origins of his servants. How do families of Parisian nobility live these changes? The families presented by Blanchard have operated since Charles VI a slow progress in the spheres of power. They arrive in the first places at the beginning of the seventeenth century by holding the most important offices of the sovereign courts (Grand Council, Chamber of Accounts, Court of Aids, Court of the coins, Parliament of Paris and provincial parliaments). The establishment of the court, the new regulations call into question family strategies. However, these families, grouped under the generic term "nobility of dress" are not only urban families as evidenced by the list of seigneuries held. The titles thus pass by the possession of seigniories, by an immobilized ground capital. This ultimate aggregation in the mode of operation of the "nobility of the sword", this mimicry bitterly sought also allows to diversify the heritage and no longer make it depend on trading or possession of a venal office. This transformation is not without pain and is accompanied by tensions, opposition within successive lineages, even failures. A second inseparable aspect presents itself: heraldry. An extension of the name, heraldry allows in a still largely illiterate France to impose its mark and its prestige. France is exiled and Louis XIV must find new military and financial resources to fight against European coalitions. After launching the investigations of nobility, Louis XIV, through d'Hozier, judge of arms of France and genealogist of the king, organizes the large census of all coats of arms to include them in French law and in practice while subjecting the port authorization to a new tax. D'Hozier, in order to create the Armorial de France, launches his commissioners general and thus receives a lot of information allowing to submit the petitioners to new researches on the illegal port of the attributes reserved to the nobility. From that moment, all nobility depend only on the royal will and must bow to the service and the court and the kingdom (service per quarter yearly). Heraldry becomes a social marker. Following the example of the titles, and wanting to escape all disgrace, the partitions of the ecus bloom as to better recall the alliances, ancestries and relatives of each. How are his new coats of arms? How are they transmitted or are they chosen within the fraternities of the Parisian nobility of dress? Our study shows how the dress, a component of urban notability, becomes the nobility of dress in the seventeenth century and identifies with the nobility of the sword? What is the place of lordships and heraldry in this process? We may wonder what may be the interest for a family of the nobility of Parisian dress to own a lordship, which may be located far from the main home?

Abstract:
Single photons - discrete wavepackets of light - are one of the most fundamental entities in physics. In recent years, the ability to consistently create and manipulate both single photons and pairs of photons has facilitated everything from tests of quantum theory to the implementation of quantum-enhanced precision measurements. These activities all fall within the scope of the rapidly-growing field of quantum information - the exploitation of the properties of quantum states (and specifically their capability to exist in superpositions) to accomplish tasks that would not be possible with classical objects. One stated goal of research in quantum information is to build a device consisting of a network of quantum logic gates that can evaluate quantum algorithms. The photonic implementation of individual logic gates has already been demonstrated. However, partly due to standard methods of preparing single photons, current schemes have severe limitations in terms of scaling up from a single logic gate to multiple concatenated operations. Until now it has not been proven that single photons can be generated in pure and indistinguishable quantum states, something upon which the successful operation of optical quantum logic gates relies. This thesis presents an experimental demonstration of simultaneous generation of almost identical single photons in highly pure states from two independent sources based on parametric downconversion. This is a process of photon pair generation during the passage of a light beam through a nonlinear crystal; one photon from the resulting pair is detected to herald the other. The work herein describes, refines, and implements a technique that minimises the strong quantum correlations usually present within each pair by spectral engineering of the source. This allows the heralded single photons to be in pure states, a property that is confirmed by observing a high-visibility two-photon interference effect without spectral filtering.

Abstract:
Quantum photonics is one of the newest strands of research that shares the border between fundamental science and state of the art technology. Many of the visions of quantum photonics, for example, linear optical quantum computing, require ideal single-photon sources (SPSs). A key pre-requisite of an ideal SPS is the near unity (>99%) indistinguishability among single-photons from multiple SPSs. This is a true measure of scalability, as multiple indistinguishable SPSs can be integrated on a single chip for performing complex quantum information algorithms. To date, higher than 95% indistinguishability has not been shown in any photonic platform. Silicon on insulator (SOI) photonics is one of the platforms that promises a near ideal heralded SPS. It also offers mature fabrication technology, truly scalable architecture and a roadmap to electronic integration. If higher than 99% indistinguishable SPSs are achieved, it will pave the way to implement adequately complex algorithms that cannot be reproduced using classical computers. The primary focus of this thesis is to investigate ways to achieve and compare indistinguishable heralded SPSs in the SOI photonic platform. Specifically, we have chosen two well-known structures as heralded SPSs: nanowire waveguides and micro-ring resonators. Although the brightness and purity of the single-photons generated in those two structures are investigated both theoretically and experimentally, the indistinguishability data is scarce in the literature. In fact, the indistinguishability of the micro-ring resonator heralded SPSs has not been experimentally demonstrated in SOI or any other photonic platform. The intrinsic resonance enhancement in the resonator predicts high brightness and purity simultaneously with high indistinguishability. Thus, designing and implementing on-chip photon indistinguishability measurement (PIM) circuits for micro-ring resonator SPSs cover a significant portion of this thesis. Also, the purity of the designed heralded SPSs has been simulated, and the effects of the possible imperfections of the PIM circuits along with practical SPSs have been investigated with numerical models. As such, the study presented here provides insights into the indistinguishability of the heralded SPSs to build scalable quantum technologies in SOI photonic platform.

Abstract:
The preparation of single photons in a pure quantum state is a subject of great interest in physics, enabling the control of light at an unprecedented level. The ease with which certain degrees of freedom of photon states, such as polarisation, can be manipulated, along with the inherent resilience of photons to decoherence, makes them well suited for use as qubits. Recent rapid developments in the transmission and processing of quantum information, as well as the likely technological impact of potential real-world applications such as quantum cryptography and quantum computation, mean that the demand for high performance single photon sources is likely to increase in the near future. One approach to producing single photon states, which are known to be in a well-defined spatio-temporal mode without destructively measuring them, is to take advantage of nonlinear optics. Nonlinear processes can be used to realise frequency conversion by generating a single, correlated pair of photons from an intense pump laser source. The detection of one of the photons from a pair can then be used to indicate the presence of the other photon in the pair, a procedure known as heralding. This thesis describes the development of a source of heralded single photons at 1550 nm, generated directly in the core of a photonic crystal fibre (PCF). By taking advantage of low loss fibre components for the required spectral filtering of the generated photon state, a heralding fidelity of 52% was achieved. The source was designed to be used with a picosecond pulsed fibre laser, making it relatively low cost and maintenance free. With 148 mW of average pump power a heralded output photon rate of 6.4 × 104 s-1 was observed, demonstrating the brightness of the source. The purity of the generated single photons was established by measuring non-classical interference, with a visibility of 70%, between the photons output from this source and a source based on a PPLN waveguide. The fabrication of a series of birefringent PCFs for the generation of spectrally pure state photons at 1550 nm is also discussed. These PCFs will be useful for incorporation in the next generation of high performance, fibre-based photon sources.

This dissertation has as its object the study of the life and work of César Vallejo and objective tries to understand the transitional moments in the history and culture of Latin America, from the look on the Peruvian reality granted in lyric discourse of César Vallejo. It discusses the shock/coexistence: pre-columbian past in the face of settler phenomenon and the contemporary questions. Seeks to understand the permanence of these historicidades in the construction of a post-colonial discourse, released from memory restore nostalgic, utopian Eden Tauantinsuyo, and the assenhoramento of the Western Christians and the trajectory of the existential poet Cesar Vallejo to unveil his speech to border beckons to different worlds, different banks and open horizons, where the power of his innovative literary diction contemplates the emerging identities on the Mainland, the hybridism of their ethno-cultural convergences. His life and the strength of his work through the Latin American soul, estuam in Peru, costa, chainsaw will resonate in generous corner in the old world, in fighting against oppression, taking the message of a happy future humanity, by the advent of the socialist utopia.

Abstract:
High order waveguide modes are nowadays of great interest for the development of new functionalities in photonics. Because of this, efficient mode couplers are required. In this thesis a new strategy for mode coupling is investigated, based on the interference arising from two coherent tilted beams superimposed in a star-coupler. Handling the high order modes allows to explore new processes within the photonics platform, as the intermodal four wave mixing. Intermodal four wave mixing is a new nonlinear optical process in waveguide, and it is here demonstrated on a silicon chip. Via intermodal four wave mixing it is possible to achieve a large and tunable frequency conversion, with the generation of photons spanning from the near to the mid infrared. The broadband operation of this process is of interest for the field of quantum photonics. Single photon sources are the main building block of quantum applications, and they need to be pure and efficient. Via intermodal four wave mixing, it is here demonstrated the generation of single photons above 2000 nm heralded by the idler at 1260 nm. Thanks to the discrete band phase matching of this nonlinear process, high purity single photons without narrow band spectral filters are demonstrated. Intermodal four wave mixing enables a new class of classical and quantum sources, with unprecedent flexibility and spectral tunability. This process is particularly useful for the developing field of mid infrared photonics, where a viable integrated source of light is still missing.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the occurrence of Scandinavia in the then daily English newspaper Yorkshire Herald during the First World War. The dissertation looks into what the Yorkshire Herald wrote about Scandinavia in the parts of the newspaper where the newspaper´s own opinion was given. This approach is connected to the theoretical idea that the British local and regional press was politically free during the war period. The dissertation also looks into the number of news telegrams etcetera that concerned Scandinavia during the period. The result shows that Scandinavia, both as a whole as well as the three individual countries, was mentioned about 700 times, split over about 600 telegrams and articles, during the examined period stretching from the first of August 1914 to the eleventh of November 1918. Material that gives the newspaper´s opinion regarding issues concerning Scandinavia can be found six times during the period. Of these articles two have a slight aggressive tone, while the character of the remaining four is more neutral, even friendly and sympathetic.

Abstract:
This research paper investigates the functions of community newspapers in the battle against HIV/Aids. The research is conducted through studying literature, analysing four selected community newspapers and interviewing the editors of the newspapers. According to the literature, a community newspaper stands closer to the reader than any other newspaper, which means it could have a larger impact than for example a national paper. A community paper can provide information or start a debate in the community. The media can focus the attention of the reader on HIV/Aids through agenda setting. By giving the subject prominence in a publication, for instance, the media show how important they consider the subject. The functions of the press can be divided in different categories: the informative function, the press as a booster of the public debate, the service function, the educative function and the entertainment function. This study finds that not all the researched newspapers consider it their responsibility to cover HIV/Aids. The importance that the editors give to the subject and the number of articles that reaches the publication also does not match. The functions the newspapers mainly fulfil, are the information and education function. The reasons for a moderate coverage of HIV/Aids include a lack of statistics, a lack of information from organisations, staff shortages and fear that the reader will receive the opinion that the newspaper writes about the same things over and over again.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been rapid development in processing of quantum information using quantum states of light. The focus is now turning towards developing real-world implementations of technologies such as all-optical quantum computing and cryptography. The ability to consistently create and control the required single photon states of light is crucial for successful operation. Therefore, high performance single photon sources are very much in demand. The most common approach of generating the required nonclassical states of light is through spontaneous photon pair generation in a nonlinear medium. One photon in the pair is detected to "herald" the presence of the remaining single photon. For many applications the photons are required to be in pure indistinguishable states. However, photon pairs generated in this manner typically suffer from spectral correlations, which can lead to the production of mixed, distinguishable states. Additionally, these sources are probabilistic in nature, which fundamentally limits the number of photons that can be delivered simultaneously by independent sources and hence the scalability of these future technologies. One route to deterministic operation is by actively multiplexing several independent sources together to increase the probability of delivering a single photon from the system. This thesis presents the development and analysis of a multiplexing scheme of heralded single photons in high-purity indistinguishable states within an integrated optical fibre system. The spectral correlations present between the two photons in the pair were minimised by spectrally engineering each photonic crystal fibre source. A novel, in-fibre, broadband filtering scheme was implemented using photonic bandgap fibres. In total, two sources were multiplexed using a fast optical switch, yielding an 86% increase in the heralded count rate from the system.
