Abstract:
The herbal cosmetics are prepared by phytochemicals that occur in a variety of botanical sources, that influences the physiology of skin and provide nutrients that are necessary for the healthy skin or hair. These products are utilized for daily purposes, which include herbal shampoo, herbal conditioner, herbal face wash, herbal soap, etc. These products are classified as a different category by regulatory agencies. However, guidelines of these certifying agencies have no harmonization, and many cosmetic industries prepare and package these formulations in an irrationalway. Many cosmetic products have natural products in their formulation that perform a specific biological function, but these products should be evaluated on their toxicological and efficacy aspects. The contribution of developing countries is very poor in global herbal business because of lack of standardization measures and quality control. The lack of safety and efficacy data on herbal cosmetics renders it difficult to meet the criteria needed for supporting its use worldwide. This review article discusses challenges related to regulatory status, quality control, standardization, certification, drug processing and the opportunities for herbal cosmetics in local as well as the global scenario. The search criteria used in the present review were the keywords mentioned in the manuscript and articles from major scientific resources were cited. The articles from 1952 to 2018 were specifically referred, but few references from 19 century were also cited to support the prevalence of scientific principles in the development of herbal cosmetics in the ancient era.

The study begins with a perilous standpoint of lovely images (female/male/child) in the mass media being regularly developed a formulaic typecasting concept of beauty. Quite a few feminine beauty myths have been grown in India during the contemporary times. The rise of cosmetic herbal advertisements portraying regressive images of womanly beauty to endorse products. Cosmetics perception of herbal integration is observed in respect to beauty myths portrayed by the media. The authors examine the structures of beauty myths of cosmetic herbals in India and their fundamental features. This is because of deep rooted androcentric dogma which portrays and objectifies the certain gender (especially women). Media vehemently disseminates much distorted concept of “beauty”. Brand changes their entire appearance with varied makeup products. There are evidently many products are available in the market which promises to bring a change in color/look/appearance altogether which is not always true but the study argues that the narratives of these cosmetic herbal products is creating an illusion. Roland Barthes's theory of mythology has been taken into consideration to understand the luxury of myth, and attributes of misleading information of media content. The study further directs to assimilate the perception of the consumers along with the semiology in depicting the beauty myth. There is a huge gap between women in reality and representative women in the mass media. It is very crucial to have a balanced perception of perceived images presented or drive by the mass media.

Abstract:
The global consumption of plant-based cosmetics has shown spectacular growth in recent years because of rising consumer awareness regarding the long-term health benefits of natural ingredients. As the global demand for herbal cosmetics increases, there are ample opportunities for Sri Lanka as a tropical Asian country to expand its productions and global exports along with its unique biodiversity and inherited traditional knowledge. Therefore, the present review attempts to give an overview of the widely used medicinal plants in the global herbal cosmetic industry and strengths, challenges, and possible solutions for the development of the herbal cosmetic industry of Sri Lanka. Information was collected using electronic search (using Pub Med, Science Direct, Web of Science, Google Scholar, TEEAL, and Scopus) for articles published in peer-reviewed journals, industrial reports, market surveys, and library search for local books on ethnobotany. Important plant-derived ingredients used in the global herbal cosmetic industry are essential oils, colorants, oils, fats, and waxes. The traditional usage of 108 medicinal plant species (belonging to 58 families) in cosmetic treatments was identified from the local books of Sri Lanka. Of these, 49 plant species were reported as new ingredients for the herbal cosmetic industry. However, the lack of ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological surveys to identify the cosmetic potential plants, insufficient or absence of continuous supply of raw materials for production in line with the existing demand, the lack of quality control of raw materials and finished cosmetic products, improper systematic cultivation systems for medicinal plants, poor postharvest practices, and the lack of innovations are major challenges encountered in Sri Lanka for the development of the herbal cosmetic industry. In conclusion, addressing these vital knowledge gaps is a timely requirement of the country for the sustainable development of the herbal cosmetic industry in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, assembling of the multidisciplinary cooperation of botanists, chemists, toxicologists, researchers, and biologists is crucial to analyze the interesting functional properties, efficacy, and effectiveness of documented medicinal plants with cosmetic potential.

It is safe to say that cosmetics play a crucial role in human life. In recent times, herbal cosmetics have become increasingly popular due to the perception that they offer fewer side effects and are a safer option. Abstract:
The increasing prevalence of tanning as a skincare concern, due to factors such as pollution, stress, UV radiation, and lifestyle, has prompted the need for the development of organic anti-tan formulations. The current study aims to synthesize an organic anti-tan substance and evaluate its various properties for both stability and effectiveness. It is well-known that the skin's natural defense mechanism against UV damage is the development of melanin, a dark brown pigment, to protect the skin from burning. Historically, plants have been utilized to meet the basic requirements for healthy and beautiful skin. However, conventional cosmetics often contain toxic ingredients that can lead to regenerative issues and increased growth hazards, with studies suggesting that the more products utilized, the higher the potential for harmful concentrations in the body. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid cosmetics altogether. However, if use is deemed necessary, the use of natural or organic cosmetics is suggested. This project aims to create and assess a polyherbal face and body pack for cosmetic use, utilizing only natural ingredients.

Abstract:
Cosmetics are products used for enhancing or maintaining the appearance of the human body. They include skincare, haircare, fragrances, and personal hygiene products. While cosmetics can provide various benefits, they may also pose risks to consumers’ health and safety. As a result, many countries have established regulatory bodies to ensure the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products. Regulatory bodies are responsible for setting and enforcing standards for cosmetic products to protect consumers from potential harm. They evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ingredients used in cosmetics and establish guidelines for labeling, advertising, and packaging. Some of the major regulatory bodies that oversee cosmetics include the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Commission, and Health Canada. Regulatory bodies typically require cosmetic manufacturers to conduct safety assessments on their products and ingredients before they can be marketed to consumers. These assessments involve evaluating the potential toxicity, skin irritation, and other potential risks associated with the product or ingredient. Regulatory bodies also conduct postmarket surveillance to monitor adverse reactions and to ensure that products continue to meet safety and quality standards. Furthermore, regulatory bodies play a crucial role in ensuring that cosmetics are safe and effective for consumers. The regulations and guidelines they establish help to protect consumers from potential health risks associated with cosmetic products. The important regulatory frameworks governing cosmetic and herbal cosmetic products in various areas and nations have been briefly summarized in this chapter. It is crucial to follow these rules to guarantee product safety and safeguard customer interests. Companies need to keep aware as the cosmetics industry develops and reacts to the shifting regulatory environment.

The choice of these ingredients is based on their individual properties. The preparation of the cream is basically done by using the cream base i.e., liquid paraffin, beeswax, borax, methyl paraben. These formulations can be evaluated by various parameters like pH, viscosity, irritancy, spreadability, microbial growth, thermal stability, homogeneity, acid value, saponification value, accelerated stability studies, patch test, smear test, after feel, washability, physical properties, dye test, after feel, in vitro diffusion study, etc. Chemical based cosmetics are harmful to the skin and an increased awareness among consumers for herbal products triggered the demand for natural products and natural extracts in cosmetics preparations.
