Abstract:
To ask the questions how we remember familiar historical figures and how they would like to have been remembered befits, perhaps, a collection of essays like this one. For us today, Herder is important as one of the leading literary figures of the German Sturm una Drang. He made seminal contributions as a philologist and linguistic ethnographer, as an aesthete and critic. We think of him, too, as a Christian philosopher who questioned, like his dear friend, Hamann, the sceptical empiricism of Hume, and, more especially, their own teacher, Kant, who had brought Hume to their notice.
