Abstract:
The campus of Heriot-Watt University welcomed the Biochemical Society with open arms, and even managed by Gary Burd to tempt some on to the dancefloor -- oh yes … we saw you! Around 400 delegates attended the meeting, (Executive Editor) which included colloquia on tetrapyrroles, amyloidogenic proteins, type II family of G-protein-coupled receptors, 14-3-3 proteins and antibodies. The Society also organized its first Research Colloquium aiming at a more relaxed, informal atmosphere, and this was judged a great success. The drinks reception was held at the Edinburgh City Chambers, and was hosted by Councillor Maureen Child (Executive Member for Finance).

Abstract:
This article proposes a flexible extension of the Fay–Herriot model for making inferences from coarsened, group-level achievement data, for example, school-level data consisting of numbers of students falling into various ordinal performance categories. The model builds on the heteroskedastic ordered probit (HETOP) framework advocated by Reardon, Shear, Castellano, and Ho by allowing group parameters to be modeled with regressions on group-level covariates, and residuals modeled using the flexible exponential family of distributions recommended by Efron. We demonstrate that the alternative modeling framework, termed the “Fay–Herriot heteroskedastic ordered probit” (FH-HETOP) model, is useful for mitigating some of the challenges with direct maximum likelihood estimators from the HETOP model. We conduct a simulation study to compare the costs and benefits of several methods for using the FH-HETOP model to estimate group parameters and functions of them, including posterior means, constrained Bayes estimators, and the “triple goal” estimators of Shen and Louis. We also provide an application of the FH-HETOP model to math proficiency data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Code for estimating the FH-HETOP model and conducting supporting calculations is provided in a new package for the R environment.

During the research’s, detailed information has been collected on the spread, growth dynamics and the damaging effect of 11 species in the agroecosystem. It has been defined that although there is no mass increase and sharp damage between the species during the research years, the monitoring about the number and growth of them should be regularly carried out. However, each species can cause serious damage to the farms during mass growth. Therefore, it is essential to carry out the monitoring constantly in the agroecosystem. The results obtained from the research can be used during the preventive measures for the pests.

CASTRO, PETER, PETER K. L. NG, and SHANE T. AHYONG. "Phylogeny and systematics of the Trapeziidae Miers, 1886 (Crustacea: Brachyura), with the description of a new family." Zootaxa 643, no. 1 (September 16, 2004): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.643.1.1.

Abstract:
A revision of the family Trapeziidae Miers, 1886, has shown that it consists of three clades, one of which is elevated to family status, Tetraliidae fam. nov., for the genera Tetralia Dana, 1851, and Tetraloides Galil, 1986. The genera Trapezia Latreille, 1828, Calocarcinus Calman, 1909, Hexagonalia Galil, 1986, Philippicarcinus Garth & Kim, 1983, Quadrella Dana, 1851, and Sphenomerides Rathbun, 1897, remain in the Trapeziidae; Domecia Eydoux & Souleyet, 1842, Jonesius Sankarankutty, 1962, Maldivia Borradaile, 1902, Palmyria Galil & Takeda, 1986, and the fossil genus Eomaldivia M ller & Collins, 1991, in Domeciidae Ortmann, 1893. Cladistic analysis shows that Trapeziidae sensu Miers, 1886, consists of three clades that show convergence as a result of similar habits as symbionts of reef corals and other cnidarians. A list of all recognised genera and species in the three families and their primary synonyms is provided. Keys are also included for four families of Brachyura symbiotic with reef corals, and for the genera and species of Domeciidae, Tetraliidae, and Trapeziidae. Some rare colour figures are reproduced. Three name changes have resulted within the Tetraliidae: Cancer glaberrimus Herbst, 1790, for Tetralia fulva Ser ne, 1984, and Cancer mutus Linnaeus, 1758, for Tetralia armata Dana, 1852, and Tetralia vanninii Galil & Clark, 1988. Nomenclatural problems associated with the repeated use of "forma typica" for various species of Trapezia and Tetralia are resolved. To stabilise the nomenclature of a number of well-known species, neotypes are designated for 13 species of Trapeziidae for which type material is not extant: Trapezia cymodoce (Herbst, 1801), and its three synonyms (Trapezia dentifrons Latreille, 1828, Trapezia dentata var. subintegra Dana, 1852, Trapezia cymodoce var. ornatus Chen, 1933); Trapezia bidentata (Forsk l, 1775), and one of its synonyms (Trapezia ferruginea Latreille, 1828); Trapezia digitalis Latreille, 1828, and one of its synonyms (Trapezia nigrofusca Stimpson, 1858); Trapezia septata Dana, 1852, and one of its synonyms (Trapezia reticulata Stimpson, 1858); Trapezia areolata Dana, 1852; Trapezia bella Dana, 1852; and Trapezia speciosa Dana, 1852. Neotypes are also designated for seven species of Tetraliidae: Tetralia glaberrima (Herbst, 1790), and three synonyms (Trapezia integra Latreille, 1828, Trapezia serratifrons Jacquinot, 1846, Tetralia laevissima Stimpson, 1858); Tetralia muta (Linnaeus, 1758), and one of its synonyms (Tetralia armata Dana, 1852); and Tetraloides nigrifrons (Dana, 1852).

Abstract:
New data on cetoniidae species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) preserved in the patrimony of the Oltenia Museum Craiova (Romania) The paper includes new data concerning the species Cetoniidae family preserved in the patrimony of the Oltenia Museum Craiova. The examined material (1029 specs) was collected between 1951-2009 from 55 sites, mostly from Oltenia and two sites from Constanţa county. 17 of the 19 species and subspecies previously known in this area have been identified. The Protaetia (Netocia) cuprea metallica (Herbst, 1782) subspecies is mentioned for the first time in the fauna of Oltenia. The identification of the Oxythyrea cinctella (Schaum, 1841) reconfirms the presence of this species in the Romanian fauna. The only mention of this species belongs to Panin (1957). The following species have not been found again: Protaetia (Netocia) fieberi (Kraatz, 1880) and P. (Netocia) ungarica (Herbst, 1790) which were previously mentioned in the museum patrimony (Chimişliu, 1999). At present, in the fauna of Oltenia 20 species and subspecies are confirmed, out of which 19 are preserved in the patrimony of the Oltenia Museum of Craiova.

Abstract:
With the sharp increase of refugees’ arrival and resettlement in western communities, adequate mental health care forms a pivotal dimension in host societies’ responses to those individuals and communities seeking protection within their borders. Here, clinical literature shows a growing interest in the development of family therapy approaches with refugees, in which therapeutic practice engages with the pivotal role of refugee family dynamics in posttrauma reconstruction and adaptation in resettlement and aims at supporting posttrauma reconstruction through strengthening capacities to restore safety, meaning and connectedness within family relationships. In this article, we focus on the narrative restoration of meaning as central mode of posttrauma reparation and explore its specific dynamics and relational complexities in the context of therapeutic practice with refugee families. Hereto, we integrate theoretical and clinical scholarly work on trauma narration and its intersection with empirical findings on trauma communication in refugee families. Furthermore, we develop case reflections to illustrate different processes of engaging with trauma narration in refugee family therapy. This analysis develops an understanding of the multivoiced ways in which refugee families engage with traumatic suffering through different modes of expression that may entail both narration and silence and explores how family therapeutic practices can engage and mobilize voices of narration and silence as relational stories of restoration.

Dagher, Hoda. "La dépendance à l'héroïne dans ses dimensions générationnelles et transgénérationnelles." Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE2014/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Addiction to Heroin poses serious problems, given its spread among the youth and its relationship to self-destruction, transgression and crime. For years, and despite their conceptual differences, psychoanalytic and systemic perspectives concur on the importance of family related factors in young people who develop addictive behaviors to substances, including Heroin.Addiction to Heroin appears to be prevalent in dysfunctional families where parenting roles are destructive, the maternal functions being deficient or excessive and the paternal functions showing major failures, as well as familial and parental conflicts that can be traced to causes that are beyond the present and rooted in transgenerational transmission.Addictive behaviors seen under the generational and transgenerational angles have not been studied in the Lebanese experience. It seems to us that the Lebanese youth addicted to Heroin are trying to resolve, through their drug intake, a dependency that is connected to a pervasive past and is reflective of an unresolved family history which repeats itself from one generation to another.Thereby discerning the problematics of Heroin addiction in Lebanon, examining the central role of early relationships experienced by heroin addicts, and highlighting the generational characteristics of the family genogram can provide important clues in understanding the addiction’s pathologies and also allow a better targeting of therapeutic interventions

DeSmet, Sara. "Exploring Therapeutic Outcomes Through Picture Books, Other Stories, and Art Therapy." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2012. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/106.

Full text
Abstract:
Therapeutic outcomes are explored in a series of case studies where art therapy and storytelling interventions are used with clients. Stories utilized in the study include picture book stories, fairytales, and self-generated narratives. Additionally, the study’s participants created art responses that took such forms as illustrations and altered books. Research questions that were investigated were: When children receiving art therapy engage with stories created by others or the author, how do they respond?; When children receiving art therapy create their own stories, how do they respond?; and Is there archetypal or other psychologically meaningful content in the author’s picture book? Main subjects of the study were clients ages 9 to 12 receiving individual and group therapy services from the author at The Whole Child in Whittier, California. The author was also a subject in the study. She studied her picture book for significant content. A case study approach was used to highlight themes of psychological or therapeutic relevance for all participants. Biographical data as well as responses to interventions were recorded in assessment and progress notes. Additionally, the therapist shared a piece of her own creative writing for each case study in order to understand clients through the storytelling process. Then the biographical data, story, art responses, and creative writing pieces were studied to look for any connections and to draw conclusions. Based on these results, it appears that sharing pre-existing stories with clients or asking clients to create their own stories has therapeutic value. Not only did these interventions appear to aid clients’ expressions, but they also helped the therapist gain important understandings about clients. Similar analysis of the author’s picture book brought to light themes of psychological importance that increased her self-understanding.

Berenschot, David. "A Descriptive Study of the Elderly in California Substance Abuse Treatment Programs." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/549.

Full text
Abstract:
As gerontologists may know, there are a great deal of studies and a variety of academic literature on the misuse of alcohol and prescription medication amongst the elderly population. While there is a plethora of information on alcohol and prescription misuse, there is little reported data about the prevalence of other substance misuse experienced by this population. This study aims to help to fill that gap in the data by using quantitative methods to describe the scope of substance abuse of individuals 55-years or older. This study utilizes data from the Treatment Data Set Admission (TEDS-A). The TEDS-A is a public data set which includes admissions data from multiple substance abuse treatment facilities associated with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA). This is a regional study, therefore this study focuses only on individuals 55-years or older who have been admitted into substance abuse treatment facilities in the state of California in the year 2014. The TEDS-A is a data set that is supported and conducted by members of SAMHSA. Most of their public data sets, including the TEDS-A, can be accessed on their website (https://www.datafiles.samhsa.gov/study/treatment-episode-data-set-admissions-teds-2014-nid16949). The data available in the TEDS-A involves a number of admission questions, including demographic data, reasons for intake, primary through tertiary substance concerns, questions regarding social status, information on medical insurance, and more. This study looks at the descriptive frequencies of the use of alcohol, crack/cocaine, marijuana/hashish, heroin, other opiates & synthetics, methamphetamine, and other substances. The study includes 13,512 cases, of which 9966 (73.8%) of cases were male, 3539 (26.2%) were female, and 7 (0.1%) were missing and/or invalid. The results of the data suggests that, while alcohol abuse is a problem, those over 55 are admitted into substance abuse clinics for many other reasons, not just alcohol abuse.

Previous studies showed that peer drug use and family conflict are significant predictors for drug use. However, some studies have indicated that family functions might serve as the moderator between peer drug use and adolescent drug use. As to the results of the relationships among peer drug use, family functions and drug reuse were inconsistent. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of peer drug use and family functions on the drug reuse, and whether family conflict serves as a moderator between peer drug use to drug reuse. A total of 186 participants were administered with questionnaires in regards to demographic characteristics, family function scale, and peer drug use scale. It was indicated that a younger age of drug initiation was associated a younger age of habitual drug use, less family responsibility, more family conflict, and more peer drug use. Moreover, drug reuse was associated an increased number of receiving probational rehabilitation treatments, a higher frequency of receiving forced rehabilitation treatments and more emotional involvement. Logistic regressions were used in the analysis. It was found that emotional involvement predicted drug reuse. However, peer drug use was not a predictor, and family conflict was not a moderator between peer drug use to drug reuse.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how a problem-determined system developed around a case of drug addiction within the context of a system of relatedness. The epistemological framework informing this qualitative study was constructivism. The six participants who took part in the study represent the most prominent role players in the particular context of living. The individual battling with drug addiction, his parents, older sister, maternal grandmother and maternal aunt were interviewed. The methods of data collection employed were semi-structured interviews, a family-chronological event chart, genograms, and an eco-map. The interviews were interpreted using the hermeneutic approach. The different themes that emerged from each participant’s story were integrated in relation to each other and with respect to the collaborative sources of data. The most dominant themes extracted within this study are the initial reactions to Andrew’s drug addiction, life changes experienced due to Andrew’s drug addiction, support, as well as the meanings attributed to Andrew’s drug addiction. Further research into problem-determined systems in different cultures is recommended.

Abstract:
General-interest periodicals are a preeminent source for the study of popular views and major discursive formations around the navy. This chapter offers a cross-title analysis of some of the most widely read family magazines published between 1850 and 1880 (Chambers’s Journal, The Leisure Hour, Household Words and All the Year Round). They reveal the wider social and cultural context in which the mid-Victorian naval-heroic discourse was situated: issues of masculinity, class, a new professionalism, technological advancement and a qualified attitude towards heroes and heroism. The magazines’ depictions of the navy were not simply laudatory. Above all, they reflected concern that at a time when Britain was still the only world power, its navy appeared to have entered a post-heroic phase.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses how Durgā replaced Skanda as a symbol of imperialism as she began to represent local goddesses thought to control land, something Skanda could not. Śaiva mythology employed narrative devices and concepts used to integrate Skanda into its fold to incorporate Durgā and to grant her a critical place within the Śaiva pantheon. This period coincided with the end of the Gupta empire, during which other lineages asserted themselves on the political map. The goddess, now a cohesive deity, began to appear as a political metaphor in their propaganda, replacing Skanda. The Cālukya emperors, for example, begin to prioritize her over their other favoured lineage god, Skanda. Assessing Cālukya era inscriptions, early Śaiva and epic sources, and later liturgies and mythologies of Durgā, this chapter shows how Skanda's decline provided a cultural vacuum after the end of the Gupta period that was filled by Durgā. Symbols of imperialism, such as the restoration of Dharma from the destabilizing effects of adharma, once formerly associated with Skanda in his imperial, demon-slaying form, began to be transplanted to the goddess. Among these symbols, her increased association with the protective goddesses called the Mātṛs, who are portrayed in early literature and material remains as Skanda's family members, had a political effect in increasing the relevance of her autumnal worship in combating communal crises. Safeguarding a community from death-giving dangers such as drought, cataclysms, earthquakes and the onslaught of harmful demons involved worshipping Durgā in the centre of the Mātṛs whose apotropaic function was well established in the religious literature of the day. The ritual sequence of the festival of Navarātra began to be dominated by the worship of these goddesses during the sacred days of Mahāṣṭamī and Mahānavamī. The result is that while Durgā's power in her earlier Gupta conception as Nidrā was connected with nature, particularly the sky, rainfall, stars and clouds, it is gradually represented through a more official array of symbols connected with military kingship, many initially imagined with Skanda, when the transition into Śaivism occurs. While under the Guptas she had been a liminal symbol, her entrance into Śaivism marked her gradual elevation into the centre, a transition that was firmly cemented when this transplantation onto the bedrock of Skanda's cultural conception occurred.

Abstract:
This chapter documents an activity during a Family Literacy Night in Latino community of the Southwest. All of the families participating were of Spanish-speaking (i.e., México, El Salvador, Puerto Rico). From a socio-cultural perspective, three points became clear through the interaction: (1) as parents and children collaborated around short texts, they were able to share their individual schema as well as their social, cultural, and linguistic capitals in conversation and in writing Spanish and English; (2) parents naturally assumed the role of mentor throughout the writing sessions; (3) when afforded topic choice and scaffolding for cultural adhesion, students generate texts that reflect their personal perspectives and lived experiences. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that the ELL writers signaled their quotidian concerns and challenges as the reasons for wanting a s/hero. The results argue that, for increased writing in English, educators are well advised to frame school tasks within their students' cultures.

Abstract:
This chapter considers Nicolaus’ construction of appropriate royal behaviour and ideology through a close examination of the famine episode at AJ 15.299–316. In describing Herod’s actions at the height of his power, Nicolaus (for we argue the passage derives from his work) revealed the same ideas on wealth that we find in his fragments. He also played on the Hellenistic ideas of the king as εὐεργέτης‎ and σωτήρ‎ while reflecting extensively on the importance of close relationships with individual Romans for success in the Augustan world. Furthermore, we may detect Nicolaus’ hand in showing Herod to have mirrored Augustus’ own statecraft in this passage, and in the subtly critical attitude to the Judaean people.

Abstract:
As Americans grapple with the most recent spate of deaths of African American men and women at the hands of the police, we are once again confronting damaging stereotypes about the Black family and Black masculinity rooted in the legacy of slavery. This book explores the masculine hierarchy of slavery that continues to influence current attitudes and shape public policy. Even as the world has changed, attitudes about human hierarchies have remained deeply entrenched. By telling the story of the often quietly heroic efforts that enslaved and free men undertook to be fathers, this book offers a counterpoint to the dominant narratives about the pathology of the African American family and absent Black fathers.

Abstract:
A family of reconfigurable parallel robots can change motion modes by passing through constraint singularities by locking and releasing some passive joints of the robot. This paper is about the kinematics, the workspace and singularity analysis of a 3-PRPiR parallel robot involving lockable Pi and R (revolute) joints. Here a Pi joint may act as a 1-DOF planar parallelogram if its lockable P (prismatic) joint is locked or a 2-DOF RR serial chain if its lockable P joint is released. The operation modes of the robot include a 3T operation modes to three 2T1R operation modes with two different directions of the rotation axis of the moving platform. The inverse kinematics and forward kinematics of the robot in each operation modes are dealt with in detail. The workspace analysis of the robot allow us to know the regions of the workspace that the robot can reach in each operation mode. A prototype built at Heriot-Watt University is used to illustrate the results of this work.
