Abstract:
Between 1938 and 1943, Fascist intellectuals debated the problem of how to create a racial policy that would encompass the Japanese within the Aryan doctrine. This article demonstrates how internal divisions in the Fascist party over racial issues generated alternative versions of pro-Japanese propaganda, which influenced the racial thinking of the Italian far-right even long after the Second World War. I show how Italian racial theories developed to underpin the alliance with Japan were transnational in scope, as they involved both German and Italian scholars in a common effort to lobby state racial policies. Specifically, I consider George Montandon and Julius Evola as two transnational actors engaged in building a case for the inclusion of the Japanese in the family of Aryan races, speaking either from a ‘biological’ or ‘spiritual’ perspective. While by the end of the Second World War the ‘biological’ thesis for the inclusion of the Japanese race had evaporated, the ‘spiritual’ thesis would continue to influence a generation of Italian far-right militants, especially during the ‘Years of Lead’. To make sense of this legacy, I suggest that the foundational myth of Italian Fascism, based on the spiritual heritage of the multiethnic Roman empire, responded to the neofascist quest for transnational affiliations against Western materialism.

Abstract:
Abstract The pine processionary moth, Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis and Schiffermüller), is an important insect in the Mediterranean region, as it defoliates pines and its urticating hairs can cause allergic reactions in humans and animals. Moreover, this species exhibits an interesting genetic structure as recently a distinct East-North African mtDNA lineage (‘ENA clade’) has been described. This clade has been recently detected in Greek populations where it has currently expanded its range by replacing the ‘endemic’ T. pityocampa lineages. Here, we report new data on the rapid spread of ‘ENA clade’ in the Greek island Evoia in only a few years. As the underlying mechanisms of the ‘ENA clade’ range expansion has not been studied so far, we screened T. pityocampa for an infection with the heritable bacterial endosymbionts Wolbachia (Bacteria: Anaplasmataceae), Cardinium (Bacteria: Bacteroidaceae), Rickettsia (Bacteria: Rickettsiaceae) and Spiroplasma (Bacteria: Spiroplasmataceae). These bacteria can manipulate the reproduction of infected hosts, something that could potentially explain the rapid spread of ‘ENA clade’ lineage. Therefore, we screened 28 individuals that exhibited T. pityocampa ‘ENA clade’ and ‘endemic’ T. pityocampa haplotypes from nine populations scattered all over Greece. None of them was infected with any of the four endosymbionts, suggesting that these bacteria do not cause reproductive manipulations in T. pityocampa lineages and, thus, other factors should be explored in future research efforts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
/*** Abstract - The current interest in the culture of heritage, revealing the importance of memory and the local identities means, among other aspects, a growing interest in the photography heritage . Side by side with the evolution of the concepts of heritage and museum, the photography won new meanings in such a manner that new reflections about the study of photo collections must be done. Starting from a real case, the collection of Grupo Pró-Évora, it's possible to prove the important of looking at each image as a “map of meanings" which allow people to go beyond its visual appearance. The present study demonstrates that the collection reflects itself not only the heritage imaginary of the Grupo, but it also gives the true image of the town, the one, the members want to be known. Being such a rich and important collection, besides its value as collective memory, it's believed it should be musealised and classified as Valuable Council Heritage Property.

Abstract:
This report explains the investigation that was conducted in the context of the course units from the Supervised Teaching Pratice in Pre-School Education and 1 Cycle of Primary Education, integrated in the Master's degree in Preschool Education and Education of the 1st Cycle of Elementary School. The investigation was carried out in two environments, firstly with students from the fourth grade in the 1st Cycle of Elementary School, and then, with a preschoolers group. The investigation´s goal was to analise and think about the contribution to the childrens learning process of Geometry through the exploration of connections between Mathematics and the Heritage of Evora city, whilst trying to respond to the following questions: How did the children evolve relatively to their capacity of recognizing and discovering the Geometry in the architectural heritage? What did the children learn about geometrical content? Which characteristics of this experience showed to be important for the success of the children´s learning process? The investigation was set in the project MatÉvora — Connections between Mathematics and the City, and was developed according to Design Research, in the modality of experiential education, which allows to interconnect educational practices with the study of mathematics, encouraging a regulated intervention in a real environment. This way, it was possible to appreciate the children´s development in geometry, through gathering data in questionnaires, interviews and analysis of the mathematical results of proposed tasks, which then allowed to check the evolution of this teaching experience. This investigation allowed to confirm, that connections with architecture make the development of the “mathematical eye” possible, allowing the vision to extend to some mathematical concepts that are explicit in the heritage of Évora city, while also appreciating its value in the buildings. The preschoolers focused a lot on the recognition of geometrical forms and those of the 1st Cycle (4th grade) expanded their ideas on symmetry and patterns. The tasks that allowed the students to engage and to gain assistance and cooperation skills were fundamental for their evolution. They were able to articulate new skills in the field of Geometry, putting them into practice by solving problems in a real case scenario, emphasizing the communication of their strategies, which were better achieved orally than written.

Abstract:
A partir da “Redescoberta do convento de Santa Mónica” surgiram duas propostas de valorização: a primeira aposta na criação de um Roteiro, elaborado de molde a visitar na cidade parte do espólio do antigo convento, disperso por várias instituições estatais e religiosas da cidade; a segunda assenta no reaproveitamento de duas salas do rés-do-chão do antigo convento para a criação de um Centro de Interpretação e Documentação, dedicado à história do espaço e da Ordem agostinha em Portugal; ### Rediscovery of the Convent of Santa Monica, Evora –Bid of protection and appreciation to convent Augustine heritage Abstract: The convent of Santa Monica´s in Evora was the first house for Sisters of the Saint Augustine’s order, to arise in Portugal. In 1380, founded the shelter with Poor Sisters, that would be converted into the convent area as part of the main Bishop, by the time of the reconstrution’s completion of the church in 1421. This thesis is based on the history of the convent since its founding to its extinction and the connexion it kept with other conventual houses and with the envolving urban web. It started then to the rediscovery of the old conventual area based on the spaces that subsist from the old hermitage, looking to understand the deep modifications in the original web subjected to the significant and various adaptations that the building knew till nowadays. Since the “Rediscovery of the convent of Santa Monica”, two valorization offers have emerged: the first bid in the creation of an itinerary, elaborated aiming to visit in the city part of the assets of the old convent scattered among various state and religious institutions; the second bid is based on the reuse of two rooms of the ground floor of the old convent for the creation of a Center of Interpretation and Documentation, dedicated to the history of the space and of the Agostinha’s order in Portugal.
