Abstract:
As competition intensifies, value co-creation with tourists is essential for successful implementation of mobile augmented reality (AR) heritage applications. This study therefore aims to identify heritage tourists’ needs and involvement when developing mobile AR heritage applications using a grounded theory approach. Since AR applications are still in their infancy in the tourism industry the grounded theory approach was employed. Fifty in-depth interviews were conducted in Macau’s World Heritage Sites. The interview transcripts were analyzed by the open coding method with the NVivo software, the process of axial coding and the selective coding method. This study generated new requirements for mobile AR heritage applications that reflect the needs of the Asian tourist market, which are different from those of the European tourist market. The characteristic of tourist empowerment and the association between co-creation and tourism were also identified. This study contributes to provide a theoretical framework for designing mobile AR heritage applications and has implications for mobile AR application developers and tourism practitioners.

Abstract:
Singapore and Hong Kong are two geographically small economic powerhouses in Asia. In recent years both cities have been attempting to develop their tourism economies by communicating their unique cultural heritages to global tourists. While heritage culture-based tourism practice may help conserve a destination's cultural heritage, its development accelerates the change of the local society; and in the process the authenticity of the cultural heritage of the destination may be lost. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the efforts adopted by Singapore and Hong Kong to communicate their cultural heritages through the tourism developments. It focuses on three questions: (1) Do the inherent contradictions between conservation and change associated with tourism development constitute threats or resources for heritage tourism development? (2) What are the major issues in the process of portraying the past in the present for heritage tourism development? (3) What implications may be drawn, by studying these issues, for the tourism industries in their planning, conservation and promotion efforts to develop heritage tourism?

Abstract:
The increasing drastic competition between tourism destinations decides on only the sites with good reputation can attract more and more tourists. The tourism destination reputation will affect tourists’ choices before traveling and consumption behavior during traveling. In order to analyze tourist consumption behavior during traveling, this article initially builds a theoretical model of tourism destination reputation, tourist enjoyment, tourist memorability, and tourist consumption behavior. Then, 490 valid questionnaires are collected based on a field survey. Meanwhile, a basic sample information collection, reliability, and validity testing (confirmatory factor analysis) and testing analysis based on structural equation model are conducted on the collected data. The result of the confirmatory factor analysis shows that the tourism destination reputation is measured by five factors: catering, accommodation, landscape, culture, and recreation and entertainment; tourist enjoyment is measured by the feeling of joy and relaxation; tourist memorability is measured by emotional memory, expectation memory, benefit memory, and interest memory; tourist consumption behavior is represented by five indexes: willing consumption, urgent consumption, guided consumption, repeated consumption, and recommended consumption. The hypothesis testing shows that the heritage tourism destination reputation not only directly and positively influences tourist consumption behavior but also indirectly affects tourist consumption behavior through tourist memorability and the chain relationship between tourist enjoyment and memorability. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to improve the tourism destination reputation and tourist enjoyment and memorability.

Abstract:
Purpose The development of heritage tourism has experienced a great development in recent years, mostly centred in the cities that are World Heritage. This paper aims to present an analysis of the relationship between Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) declared by UNESCO and tourism development associated therewith. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used in this research consisted of a fieldwork to determine the socio-demographic profile and perceptions of foreign tourists participating in this intangible cultural event. Additionally, the features of this tourist destination are also analysed. Findings The main results of this research shows the high cultural level of tourist respondents, the significant economic level of travellers and the perceptions of heritage tourists in participation in the Festival. Research limitations/implications The expansion of this line of research is to include other ICH; this should contribute to the generalisation of the knowledge acquired in this subject. Practical implications The main practical implications are centred on better understanding of the key factors involved in the relation between intangible cultural heritage and tourism. Social implications This study highlights the features that a heritage tourist destination must have to create a sustainable tourism destination with a combination of culture and tourism. Originality/value Heritage, generally tangible cultural heritage, is used as a resource in the destinations. This paper analyses the relationship between intangible cultural heritage and tourism, an aspect little studied by the scientific literature.

Poria, Yaniv. "Clarifying heritage tourism : distinguishing heritage tourists from tourists in heritage places." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2001. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/1001/.

Abstract:
Observing visitors' behaviour in places presenting heritage and reviewing the tourism literature dealing with 'heritage tourism', led to this research that aimed to clarify the core of heritage tourism. In this research the common approach that tourists visiting heritage sites is called "heritage tourism", was challenged. The relationship between four groups of variables (1- the tourists' personal characteristics, 2- the tourists' awareness of the history of the site, 3- the tourists' perception of the site in relation to their own heritage and, 4 - the site attributes) and the tourists' visitation patterns (before the visit, during the visit, and after the visit) as the outcome variables was investigated. The actual study was conducted in Israel, due to its attributes as an area containing a variety of heritage sites in a relatively short distance, which relate to different tourists on different grounds, mainly looking at two sites: the Wailing Wall and Massada. The results indicate that the relationship between the tourists and the heritage site attributes is at the core of this social phenomenon. Specifically it was revealed that the tourists' perception of the site as part of their own heritage is associated with the tourists' visitations patterns at the site. The understanding of this relationship is useful for the study of heritage related behaviour including heritage tourism and has also potential contribution for the management of sites presenting historic and heritage artefacts. The approach used in this research could also be useful for challenging the existence of other sub-groups of tourism, and for the understanding of tourism as a general phenomenon. The study also suggests new approaches for the understanding of social behaviour in the context of heritage-related behaviour, which could be useful for other social research disciplines.

Smith, Philip. "Mythogeographic performance and performative interventions in spaces of heritage-tourism." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1548.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers new models for participatory and performative interventions in sites of heritage tourism through a theorized practical engagement. Drawing on both Tourism Studies and Performance Studies, the primary aim of these interventions is to reveal and provoke ways of seeing and using these sites as places of multiple meanings rather than as ones constricted and bounded by normative heritage narratives in their production and management. The experimental phase of the project discussed in the thesis includes three contrasting case studies: GeoQuest, Sardine Street, and Water Walk. These are each analysed and evaluated through my development of a ‘mythogeographic’ framework that includes the performative techniques of layering, rhizomatic interweaving, the making of 'anywheres' and the self-mythologising of the activist. The thesis charts a trajectory through praxis, from developing models for ambulatory, signage-based and ‘mis-guided’ interventions to be undertaken by performance ‘specialists’, towards a dispersal of their tactics for use by heritage tourists in general. It thus describes a related change in the balance of the research methodology from ethnographic participant observation towards practice-as-research (PaR), the latter of which both generated and enacted knowledge and understanding. This PaR took the form of various visits and forays to and across heritage sites and landscape, and also the production of a ‘toolkit’ of handbook, pocketbook, website and online short films for the dispersal of tactics and a strategy that is eventually called ‘counter-tourism’. The thesis thus includes the publications A Sardine Street box of tricks, Counter-tourism: the handbook, Counter-tourism: a pocketbook and the DVD, Tactics for counter-tourism, as well as their fully theorized critical contextualisation. These represent a PaR enquiry that attempts to creatively express my research findings from productions made in the field through a popular form of writing and presentation that is capable of inspiring general, ‘non-specialist’ tourists to make their own performance interventions in heritage sites.

Abstract:
This thesis researches into the heritage tourism characteristics on Gotland. Many destinations see a great potential to develop new tourism products around their heritage and thus meet a rising demand for enriching and unique visitor experiences. However, different considerations and stakeholders need to be taken into account to foster a sustainable development. The Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea has a long history as a tourism destination and is rich in heritage resources of diverse origin. A qualitative approach has been taken to study which traits characterise heritage related tourism to Gotland, and which potentials and challenges are seen by major stakeholders in the tourism and heritage development. One protruding result has been the strong connection between natural and cultural elements at the heritage sites as well as in tourism demand. Also the tourism strategy for Gotland strives for a further development of nature and culture as thematic tourism areas. Hence, a closer look has been taken into the relation of these two heritage elements. With help of the concept and methodology of heritagescapes two heritage sites have been analysed in a case study approach. The result shows that the integration of natural and cultural heritage to create cohesive and immersive visitor experiences at one site is challenging. However, taking both heritage elements into account can create synergies and they enhance how the respective other heritage element is experienced. This can broaden which visitor groups are attracted and in which season. Furthermore, the heritagescape approach gives practical management implications for the sites.

Abstract:
As defined by Wai Mun Lim and Mel Endean in 2009 in their article “Elucidating the aesthetic and operational characteristics of UK boutique hotels” in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Boutique hotels have less than 100 rooms, have an individualistic and unique design, are often in historic buildings, and have highly personalized service for guests. I found that a boutique hotel that focuses on historic preservation and heritage tourism does four things. First, it respects the history of the building it is housed in, preserving as much of the original structure as possible. It also takes advantage of the unique features the historical building offers, highlighting them with design choices. Third, it educates guests on the history of the building and the surrounding area with both information and design. Lastly, it encourages guests to visit and engage with other heritage tourism sites in the area, offering concierge services and ticket packages.

Abstract:
The aims of this research are to examine and explore perceptions of the built environmental impacts of heritage tourism in urban settlements; to explore the practice of heritage tourism management; and to examine the consequences of both for the sustainability of the heritage environment. The literature review explores the concepts of heritage management, the heritage production model, the tourist-historic city, and sustainability and the impact of tourism on the built environment. A theoretical framework is developed, through an examination of literature on environmental impacts, carrying capacity, sustainability, and heritage management; and a research framework is devised for investigating the built environmental impacts of heritage tourism in urban settlements, based around five objectives, or questions. The research methodology is explained. Fieldwork took place in Ludlow, Shropshire from 2006 to 2010. It included an analysis of the national and local planning policy framework; and the phenomenon of the small English heritage town, of which Ludlow is a prime example. Linked surveys were undertaken in Ludlow of visitors, business providers, and managers of heritage tourism. The study establishes (a) the concept of 'perceived impact' of heritage tourism on the built environment is a stronger analytical and management tool than the concept of carrying capacity; and (b) that understanding stakeholder's perception of the built environmental impacts of heritage tourism provides empirical evidence that can contribute a new dimension to debates on the definition of 'heritage'; (c) takes forward the typology of the built environmental impacts of tourism as developed by Hunter and Green, using empirical data to show what different stakeholders think about the relative importance of different aspects of heritage.

Abstract:
This paper presents a scientific analysis of the topic of interpretation of intangible heritage in tourism – through the myth of the arrival of the Slavs. By planned design, myth becomes a real tourist attraction. Embarking from the postulates of the paper, we try to explain the importance of the local community for the interpretation of the intangible heritage and of establishing a sustainable system of its interpretation. The paper makes an effort to emphasize and prove the exceptional relevance of animation for the shaping and developing of a tourist product. Interdisciplinary features of the paper impose the use of recent sources from a variety of scientific fields and disciplines (archaeology, anthropology, phylology, cultural creative tourism, economy of experience). This entire paper has features of a scientific review which mostly uses desk method and deconstruction analysis aimed at intangible heritage and interpretative capacities in animation, within the economy of experience. The process of interpretation, which includes recognition and shaping or 'packaging', converts the myth into a tourist product. This packaging is not a mere cosmetic process which would help improve the product or simplify it. Interpretation is actually the essence, or the basic content of the product, which is sold in order to enrich the tourist offer by traditional elements which, in a large measure, form base of the national and regional identity. The contribution of this paper is the animation model for the interpretation of intangible heritage in a tourist destination of cultural tourism, which gives guidelines for the interpretation and formulation of intangible heritage for tourist purposes at a more subtle and higher level, outside the hitherto known frame of predictable and familiar processes. This model indicates the way to interpret the myth and to recognize and register its particular parts through the system, in the space, as local, regional and national attraction, which is illustrated by the example of 'holy geography'. A special contribution is in the change of paradigm, where it is shown that a tourist area can be interpreted in a novel, original way, as a spiritual resource for tourists visiting the area, and for the local population.

Abstract:
In the context of the specifics of tourism discourse and communication through blogs, the paper presents an analysis of the image of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Kazanlak in 30 publications in French-language tourist blogs from the last ten years. The various discursive strategies and linguistic tools that can be identified in these texts are explored through the prism of their contribution to structuring a presentation that goes beyond the story of personal travel and emphasizes authenticity, identity and axiological charge, aesthetic value and the invitation to discover alterity in the described tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Elements that bring the discourse thus constructed closer to a communication that valorises cultural property. Thus, beyond the possibility of outlining the image of cultural heritage perceived by the foreign tourist, useful with a view to the efforts to promote it, the issue of the foreign tourist blog as a potential interesting component of communication campaigns in the field of cultural tourism deserves attention.

Abstract:
Bairén fortress archaeological park. A valorisation project within the context of designing new politics of heritage tourism for the city of GandiaThis work emphasises the cultural value of archaeological heritage through the design of an archaeological park at the Islamic fortress of Gandia. The city, heavily tight to traditional tourism visitors, attracted by climatic easiness and beach facilities, tries now to develop an alternative course of action in order to complement its offer. Therefore, a wide project has been designed so as to put all the efforts together and get present a complete valorisation project within the current renewal dynamics regarding tourist local products. Beyond heritage and tourism, this text focuses on the importance of research and innovation in heritage politics driven by municipal institutions.
