Abstract:
This article considers the role of physics in transforming cosmology into a research field which relies heavily on fundamental physical knowledge. It begins with an overview of astrophysics and the state of physical cosmology prior to the introduction of relativity, followed by a discussion of Albert Einstein’s application of his new theory of gravitation to cosmology. It then examines the development of a theory about the possibility of an expanding universe, citing the work of such scientists as Edwin Hubble, Alexander Friedmann, Georges Lemaître, and George Gamow; the emergence of the field of nuclear archaeology to account for the origins of the early universe; and the controversy sparked by the steady-state theory. It also describes the discovery of a cosmic microwave background of the kind that Alpher and Herman had predicted in 1948 before concluding with a review of modern cosmological hypotheses such as the idea of ‘multiverse’.

Abstract:
Rather than one score, Since You Went Away has slightly more than two: a rejected attempt by concert composer Alexandre Tansman and another by Max Steiner that includes multiple versions of many cues. In addition to these scores, Selznick’s notes on the score are voluminous, reflecting his desire to match his two consecutive “Best Pictures” (Gone with the Wind and Rebecca) while also contributing to the war effort through patriotic filmmaking. The result is a mixed but engrossing effort, characterized by biographer David Thomson as Selznick’s most personal film. The producer’s investment is evident throughout the score, and this chapter assesses both positive and negative consequences, including a failed attempt to engage Bernard Herrmann, Alexandre Tansman’s ignominious dismissal, Steiner’s pragmatic reuse of associative themes from earlier Selznick films, and a new, music-based publicity campaign led by Ted Wick.

Abstract:
The increasing complexity of networked systems casts doubt on the self-determination in the digital sphere. Externally predetermined algorithms and practices of third-party data processing raise questions as to the protection of and the danger to autonomy and the freedom of expression. At the same time, the legal, political, ethical, social, and economic responsibility for the consequences of digital transformation processes for societies, collectives, and individuals remains undetermined. Precisely in this field, the present interdisciplinary volume would like to stimulate a discussion on responsibilities and impact assessments; in which regard, it researches problems in digital cultures, tackles possible solutions, and discusses conflicts of economic, political, and social systems. Abstract:
This edited volume presents several contributions from the second conference on the interrelationship between educational science and law, which took place in Austria in autumn 2016. The conference focused on the tension that arises when changes in the teaching and training of law are addressed. A perennial major concern within law education is the question of how it has to be applied in order to meet contemporary challenges, but so are other topics that address issues relating to the improvement of legal education. These considerations clearly show that the field of law education connects theory and practice and can improve the teaching of law significantly. With contributions by Rudolf Mosler, Michael Frey, Raimund Pittl, Lina Rosa Gradl, Ines Deibl, Jörg Zumbach, Viola Geiger, Christine Neuner, Natalia Hartmann, Christoph Görisch, Pamela Hölbling, Marcus Schladebach, Stephanie Moser, Tanja Thurner, Doris Lewalter, Kai von Lewinski, Raphael de Barros Fritz, Dana-Sophia Valentiner, Barbara Paesold, Karin Sonnleitner, Evelyne Schmid, Hermann Astleitner, Lutz Lammers, Patrick Warto, Jan-Gero Alexander Hannemann and Otto Lagodny.

Abstract:
Globalization, technical development, the increase of crises and the attractiveness oft he public service make innovations necessary also in administration. This volume shows that German administration has the power to innovate. Recent research results and practical examples taken from the federal administration show „how innovation works“, especially in times of digitalization and the „VUCA-World“. This volume extends previous contributions by the editor such as „Be innovative administration!“ and „Stay innovative administration!“ and integrates current perspectives. Another volume, mainly on innovations in regional and local government will follow. Abstract:
The controversy about political correctness is being carried on in politics and the society, in science and culture; it affects the use of language and the presentation of images in general and the public opinion in concrete terms. From a linguistic point of view, the efforts regarding language corrections and in particular the discussions regarding a gender-correct use of language are of special interest. Yet, the discussion also arises in educational and religion-specific contexts as well as in the political dispute with and about right-wing populism. The public debate regarding taboos and the breaking of taboos in journalism as well as in literature and visual arts also belong to the issue. Abstract:
Prescription, illicit, and recreational drugs touch all of our lives yet a basic understanding of these chemicals is largely absent among Americans. Jerrold Winter offers a comprehensive account of psychoactive drugs, chemicals which influence our brains in myriad ways. Manifestations of their influence on the brain are quite varied. There may be the comfort provided by opioids to those who are dying or in pain or, in everyday life, the surge of contentment for the users of caffeine, nicotine, heroin, alcohol, or marijuana upon the taking of their drug of choice. Turning to the more exotic, a drug such as LSD may alter the way the world looks to us; it may even inspire thoughts of God. Adding to the purely scientific questions which confront us are the ways in which our society chooses to respond to the presence of psychoactive drugs. Should they be banned and their users sent to prison, tolerated as a reflection of man's eternal search for an escape from anxiety, pain, and the monotony of daily life, or celebrated as therapeutically useful agents? Our Love Affair with Drugs is written for experts and novices alike. There are stories of, for example, how Timothy Leary caused the repeal of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Readers will learn of the transformation by Sir Charles Locock of a drug intended to dampen female sexual activity into the first effective drug for the treatment of the ancient disease of epilepsy. Alexander Shulgin's love of psychoactive drugs and his unconventional research practices illuminate the story of methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a.k.a. Ecstasy, a drug now likely to find value in treating veterans and others suffering post-traumatic distress disorder. Winter links the excitement of drug discovery with the very practical matter of balancing the benefits and risks of these drugs.

Abstract:
The first half of the volume is devoted to the exposition of the ancient evidence, literary and iconographic, for the traditions of Heracles’ life and deeds. After a chapter each on the hero’s childhood and his madness, the canonical cause of his Twelve Labors, each of the Labors themselves receives detailed treatment in a dedicated chapter. The “Parerga” or “Side-Labors” are then treated in a similar level of detail in seven further chapters. In the second half, the Heracles tradition is analyzed from a range of thematic perspectives. After consideration of the contrasting projections of the figure across the major literary genres, epic, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and in the iconographic register, a number of his myth-cycle’s diverse fils rouges are pursued: Heracles’ fashioning as a folkloric quest-hero; his relationships with the two great goddesses, the Hera that persecutes him and the Athena that protects him; and the rationalization and allegorization of his cycle’s constituent myths. The ways are investigated in which Greek communities and indeed Alexander the Great exploited the figure both in the fashioning of their own identities and for political advantage. The cult of Heracles is considered in its Greek manifestation, in its syncretism with that of the Phoenician Melqart, and in its presence at Rome, the last study leading into discussion of the use made of Heracles by the Roman emperors themselves and then by early Christian writers. A final chapter offers an authoritative perspective on the limitless subject of Heracles’ reception in the western tradition.
