Whitmer, Kelly Joan. "Learning to see in the Pietist Orphanage : geometry, philanthropy and the science of perfection, 1695-1730." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2427.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a dissertation about the Halle method, or the visual pedagogies of the Pietist Orphanage as they were developed in the German university town of Halle from 1695 until 1730. A “Pietist” was someone who was affiliated with an evangelical reform movement first initiated by Philipp Jakob Spener in the 1670s. A long and deeply entrenched historiographical tradition has portrayed the Halle proponents of this movement—especially their leader August Hermann Francke—as zealous, yet practical, Lutheran reformers who were forced to directly confront the ideals of early Enlightenment in conjunction with the state-building mandate of Brandenburg-Prussia. This has led to a persistent tendency to see Halle Pietists as “others” who cultivated their collective identity in opposition to so-called Enlightenment intellectuals, like Christian Wolff, at the same time as they exerted a marked influence on these same persons. As a result of this dichotomous portrayal over the years, the impact of the Halle method on educational reform, and on the meanings eighteenth-century Europeans attached to philanthropy more generally, has been misunderstood. I argue that the Pietist Orphanage holds the key to remedying several problems that have impeded our ability to understand the significance of Pietist pedagogy and philanthropy. This was a site specifically designed to introduce children to the conciliatory knowledge-making strategies of the first Berlin Academy of Science members and their associates. These strategies championed the status of the heart as an assimilatory juncture point and were refined in the schools of the Pietist Orphanage, which itself functioned as a visual showplace that viewers could observe in order to edify and improve themselves. It was the material expression of Halle Pietists’ commitment to a “third way” and marked their attempt to assimilate experience and cognition, theology and philosophy, absolutism and voluntarism. The dissertation examines several personalities who had a direct bearing on this conciliatory project: namely E. W. von Tschirnhaus, Johann Christoph Sturm, Leonhard Christoph Sturm, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Christian Wolff. It also examines how the method was applied in the Halle Orphanage schools and extended elsewhere.

Cappelli, Federica.

Abstract:

Dennis, Andrew Robert. "Representational strategies in the novels of Hermann Burger." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/80183/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the novels of Hermann Burger. It considers the experimental nature of Burger's writings as a form of opposition, or 'Verweigerung', to the restrictive discourses of Swiss nationhood expressed in the notion of 'Enge'. A central tenet of the argument advanced here is that Hermann Burger is both a very self-consciously Swiss author, and, at the same time, very self-consciously experimental; a constant tension between these two aspects of his writing is manifest in all his work. Burger was not a provincial Swiss writer. Rather, he was an eclectic writer, and this thesis will examine the manner in which his work is framed by a broad spectrum of literary and philosophical ideas current in the wider international context of literary debate which serve to challenge the narrowness of intellectual discussion and forms of representation in Switzerland. To extend the discursive possibilities of the individual within the cultural space of the nation, Burger's novels involve a radical play with form and language which blurs the boundaries between the real, the unreal and the surreal, in order to challenge notions of the 'real'. A conflict between normative modes of expression and the desire for self-expression develops which is thematically central in Burger's work. His novels present the reader with a complex set of inter-related issues: national identity; national culture; Art; nature; literature and representational strategies; art and life. The methodology adopted in this thesis reflects the belief that Burger's work is best appreciated as an eclectic mix of ideas. As Burger engages with the multifarious aspects of life and seeks to give them form, so his work is considered in relation to a broad range of theories which, taken together, provide insights into his work.

Surattanaporn, Sukontha. "Factors influencing consumer purchasing intention on Thai herbal tea in Germany." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-164511.

Full text
Abstract:
Tea consumption has been increased, especially in Germany, as consumers are more concerned about health taking care for the people at different ages. Consumers are more careful of what they are consuming, and increasingly consuming the products which are originally come from nature. Herbal tea industry became more attractive and shows opportunities to the firms as well as consumers. A study about factors that can persuade or motivate consumer's intention to buy herbal tea from Thailand can help the entrepreneurial herbal firm or marketers in Thailand, or tea importer in Germany to realized the importance of factors influences consumer purchasing intention of Thai herbal tea in Germany, and it affect to consumer's decision making. Descriptive research was employed in the research methodology of this study as it helps answering research questions related to consumer attitude towards herbal tea, and relationship between each studying factors in this study. This research provides result from studying and analyzing the problems based on research objectives in order to investigate factors that influences consumer intention to purchase herbal tea, especially herbal tea from Thailand, which is the country that consume many different kinds of herbs in each day. The research had been done through questionnaire survey from 115 respondents from the range of age 21to 60 years old German consumers, who are living in the area of Mainz, Frankfurt, and Wiesbaden. The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to measure the relationship between variables and how it affects to purchasing intention of a consumer; the analysis of linear regression, correlation, and one-way ANOVA had been applied. Based upon the results of this study, several suggestions can be made to increase consumer perception and purchase intention of herbal tea from Thailand. First, the producers should pay attention on product quality as it is the factor that impacts their decision the most compared to other factors. Second, the word herbal tea from "Thailand" should be promoted on the package as well as its attribute because consumers trust that the quality of Thai herbal tea is good, and healthy.

Full text
Abstract:
Hermann Hesse's reflection on youth is one of his most popular themes. In his novel Unterm Rad (1906), Hesse explores youth and their search for identity. The author not only accuses the German educational system of at the turn of the century, but also the teachers and parents, of standing in the children's way in developing an individualized personality. According to Hesse, this development, however painful, is the primary responsibility of the adolescent. Hermann Hesse feels strongly about becoming a personality, namely the privilege to feel, act, and think independently of the masses. Every individual has an obligation to follow his inner voice and to develop his own identity. The first part of this thesis concentrates on the novel Unterm Rad and consists of a summary, thematic discussion, the novel's presentation and its original and succeeding receptions. It then discusses the definition and theory of "identity" in regard to young people. By focusing on the two protagonists Giebenrath and Heilner, their goals and the reality of their lives, their struggle on their way to adulthood becomes apparent. Finally this thesis explores Hesse's own childhood and youth and examines the autobiographical elements in the literary figures of this novel.

Abstract:

Hamann, Jessica. "Inszenierungen von Erinnerung und kollektivem Gedächtnis. Hermann Hesses Das Glasperlenspiel als Gedächtnisroman." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/745.

Abstract:
This thesis examins various representations of individual memories and collective memory in Hermann Hesse?s <em>Das Glasperlenspiel</em> (1946). The analysis of Hermann Hesse?s novel basically pursues three different objectives: First, the narrative construction of the protagonists individual memories and how these are related to his self-perception. The theoretical framework for this purpose includes on the one hand narratological categories and on the other hand approaches which combine narratology and representations of memory in literature as for example Basseler?s and Birke?s (2005) contribution ?Mimesis des Erinnerns. ? Their understanding of the mimesis of remembering implies the construction of memories on different narratological levels like the level of the narrator and the one of the characters. <br ><br /> The second goal of this thesis, the analysis of the Glass Bead Game as a metaphor, is inextricably intertwined with Josef Knecht?s individual development but also initiates problems of collective memory and how they can appear in the extra-literary reality. The institution of the Glass Bead Game embraces the essential problems the province of Castalia suffers from: the exclusion of history results in corporate stagnation. Aleida and Jan Assmann?s theory of cultural memory offers a view of the Glass Bead Game-metaphor that illustrates the consequences of a radical separation of cultural memory and communicative memory. Thereby the transmission of meaning is cut off and the contents of cultural memory lose their significance for individuals in a particular society. <br ><br /> Last but not least it is discussed why <em>Das Glasperlenspiel</em> can be considered to be a ?Gedächtnisroman? (memory novel) and which narratological procedures of representation constitute it as such. The category of ?Gedächtnisroman? derives from Astrid Erll?s enhancements of Jan Assmann?s theory of cultural memory and emphasizes the social function of memory-narratives. In <em>Das Glasperlenspiel</em> two rhetorical modes, the cultural and the reflective mode, can be identified as being dominant. That leads to the conclusion, that <em>Das Glasperlenspiel</em> on the one hand formulates a collective memory that exists outside of historical time and on the other hand places it in the context of a cultural tradition through functionalising a variety of ?cultural paradigms?. In the reflective mode, the novel allows an observation of the contemporary ?Erinnerungskulturen? (communities sharing collective memories) to the reader and creates a fictional model of collective memory that exemplifies its problematic dimensions. <br ><br /> The cultural studies approach of this thesis and especially the combination with theories of collective memory extends the investigation of memory as an inner-literal phenomenon and involves ?Erinnerungskulturen? as space of effect of literary texts. In this respect literature is no longer only a written medium but literary texts get subsumable as cultural forms of expression that make the development and change of ?Erinnerungskulturen? observable. In this spirit, literature is not restricted to being a medium of ?Erinnerungskultur?, but also takes part in the generation of memory.

Abstract:
vii, 56 p. This thesis is written in German.<br>My thesis focuses on the question of how intertextuality can operate as a form of cultural memory. Drawing on the cultural-semiological model of intertextuality developed by Renate Lachmann, my analysis of Hermann Broch's novel Die Schlafwandler examines how the incorporation of intertexts enriches and changes the interpretation of a manifest text. I am focusing in particular on Broch's references to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Immanuel Kant in the chapters "Zerfall der Werte" to exemplify how intertextuality operates in this novel. The focus on two specific sources of intertextual references allows me a thorough analysis of the new interpretive dimensions that are created through intertextuality and at the same time the delineation of new perspectives for the further study of intertextuality in relation to Broch's work.<br>Committee in charge: Prof. Martin Klebes, Chairperson; Prof. Kenneth Calhoon, Member; Prof. Alexander Mathäs, Member

For this, the corpus used has been built from primary sources collected in the libraries and collection from the cities of Assis, Marilia, Campinas and São Paulo, as well as through electronic methods (internet) - in the sites of searching and others related to the virtual data of collections. The consulted texts, referring to Hesse and all his work, involve the period from 1935 to 2005. This is all about verifying then in which circumstances occurred this encounter between the Hesse's literature and the Brazilian readers, represented by the journalists and academic researchers emphasizing the tendencies and the most important contributions of the critic concerning the story of Hesse's reading in Brazil. As guiding axis of this research a bibliographic list with comments has been made allowing a circumstanced view concerning all the texts found. The research also contains transcription of the texts published in newspapers and magazines which have its access restricted. When reunited the bibliography about the writer, the knowledge concerning Hesse's literature has been increased making possible the appearance of new studies.<br>Mestre

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to establish the pattern of Joseph Knecht's awakening in Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game. Based on the premise that Knecht, unlike Hesse's previous protagonists, is an integrated individual living within a disintegrated and segregated environment, a secondary intent of this paper is to examine the paradox of Knecht's Castalian existence. Each chapter concentrates on a stage of Knecht's development, both formally as a Castalian, and psychologically as an individual who is committed to serving the highest authority. This authority is not the rigid, one-dimensional Castalia but rather the dynamic force which governs all life. Knecht compares himself to music and perceives his life as a process of becoming. As he ascends the ladder of Castalian hierarchy, Knecht's own consciousness develops through the intervention of several antithetical figures who challenge him to reconcile the subjective nature of Truth and the transience of all forms. When he can no longer justify serving an Order which is governed by the pretense of perfection and permanence, Knecht feels obligated to warn Castalia of its own temporality and to resign his position as Magister Ludi. Knecht's leap beyond Castalia and into the deadly lake at Belpunt serves two purposes; not only does he take the first step toward integrating Castalia and the outside world, but he fulfills his own life by sacrificing himself to his pupil Tito.

Abstract:
In the last decades a number of studies have shed light on early modern scientific experience. While some of these studies have focused on how new facts were forced out of nature in so-called experimental situations, others have charted long-term transformations. In this dissertation I explore a rather different facet of scientific experience by focusing on the case of the Prussian university town Halle in the period from the late seventeenth till the mid-eighteenth century. At this site philosophers, theologians and physicians were preoccupied with categories such as inner senses, inner experience, living experience, psychological experiments and psychometrics. In the study I argue that these hitherto almost completely overlooked categories take us away from observations of external things to the internal organisation of experience and to entirely internal objects of experience. Rather than seeing this internal side of scientific experience as mere theory and epistemology, I argue that it was an integral and central part of what has been referred to as the cultura animi tradition, that is, the philosophical and medical tradition of approaching the soul as something in need of cultivation, education, disciplination and cure. The study contains four empirical chapters. In the first chapter I analyse the meaning and function of experience in Christian Wolff’s philosophy understood as spiritual exercise and cultura animi. In the second chapter I examine experience in the theologian Hermann Francke’s cultura animi, focusing particularly on the relation between scientific experience and what scholars have referred to as religious experience. In the third chapter I chart aesthetic experience in Alexander Baumgarten’s aesthetics. In the fourth chapter I examine the role of experience in the medicine of Georg Ernst Stahl, Friedrich Hoffmann and their followers. The analysis of medical experience channels the discussion into questions regarding the relation between the cultura animi tradition and the kind of attitudes, practices and processes that have been connected to modern objectivity.

Dodds, Sarah Jane. "The significance of the Italian style in German Lutheran music of the early seventeenth century : a study of Johann Hermann Schein's 'Opella nova' (1618, 1626)." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1983/aa724e9f-842f-4887-a352-0d8b6350c64c.

Full text
Abstract:
The title page of Schein's Opella nova I (1618) advertises `Geistliche Concerten.a. uff jetzo gebreuchliche italiänische Invention'. A mixture of Latin, Gothic and Italic script styles gives an immediate visual impression of mingling styles. From this starting point, the genre and purpose of the two publications of the Opella nova (1618,1626) are discussed. Examination of the collections published in between these volumes reveals that Schein deliberately published sacred and secular music alternately, positively advertising and applying the same Italian genres and styles in each category. The reception of the `new Italian style' by Schein's contemporaries, Michael Praetorius, Johann Staden, Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Schütz is explored. Schein's Opella nova concertos are examined thoroughly, and the question of how he adapted and adopted the Italian style into music for the Lutheran liturgy is considered. This reveals that Schein possessed a deep knowledge of Italian music, and although no definitive claims about whether he imitated particular composers are made, points of similarity with the work of Viadana, Giovanni Gabrieli, Monteverdi and Alessandro Grandi are found. Finally the reasons why the Italian style was received so positively by Lutheranism in Schein's time, in spite of hostility towards the Catholic faith, are considered. The influence of Renaissanceh umanism in Luther's thought is outlined, and the author takes the view that the Italian style in Lutheran music of Schein's time was the result of the continuing influence and development of this intellectual movement. Music is compared to poetry and rhetoric in its function. The question of how the Italian style fitted in to Schein's local context of the Lutheran free city of Leipzig is briefly discussed, and a conclusion reached that it was due principally to the cosmopolitan nature of the university and international trade in the city that Schein was able to pursue his interest in the `italiänische Invention

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the freestanding statues of animals set as offerings, or “anathemata”, in Greek sanctuaries of the mainland, the Aegean island and the coast of Asia Minor from the Archaic to the Hellenistic periods. Surviving are gatjeres in a catalogue, along with the bases on which animal statues stood and the epigraphic material linked with freestanding animal dedications. A second catalogue lists the animal statues recorded by ancient travelers. The contextual study treats the represented animals by categories. It questions biological data, interactions between humans and animals, the place of animals in ancient Greek literature and mythology, as well as animal representations in a religious context. The receiving sanctuaries are also examined and the meanings of sculptural “anathemata” of each category is discussed. The importance of some animals by their absence is also ta ken into consideration.Observations on ancient sculpture focus on the aesthetics of animal statues, the materials used, the place of the “anathemata”, the practicalities and cost of their transport, and the identity and specialties of the sculptors. Data drawn from the catalogues are systematically analyzed in order to draw links between sanctuaries, choice of represented animals, receiving deities, geographical implications and the diachronic evolution. A study of the dedicators' identity enables the questioning to extend beyond the religious sphere, to the political motives and social implications connected to the dedication of animal statues

Abstract:
Besonders eine war erfolgreich: Rimsky-Korsakows ausdrückliche Empfehlungen ließen sich gegen den Strich bürsten oder auch allzu wörtlich nehmen; genau das verbürgte in den Dreißiger Jahren Expressivität<br>Nine years after the Russian and eight after the French first publications, the German, alongside the English translation of Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous treatise was eventually published by the Edition Russe de musique in 1922. In answering this question, the following has been taken into account: i) orchestration guides written in German after 1922; ii) documents from education institutions; iii) German historiography of the theoretical discipline in question; and iv) works by German composers who are known to have reacted against Rimsky-Korsakov’s model of orchestration. The sound ideal associated with the orchestra had changed. Selectivity was emphasized and composers sought to create an orchestral sound that was seen as ‘split up’ and thought of as the opposite to something merging and melting. The new composers sought a raw, woodcut-like orchestration. Some musicians nonetheless could not or did not want to escape from the deep technical insights of Rimsky-Korsakov, from the sophistication and raffinement of the Russian orchestrator. The conflict between the fascination by his writing and the new sound fashion soon offered multiple solutions. Especially one of them was successful: Rimsky-Korsakov\\\'s explicit recommendations could be understood against the grain, or could be taken too literally: in the thirties just this guaranteed expressivity

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation examines modes of citations in Hermann Broch's work Die Schuldlosen. Focusing on the topoi of romanticism and myth, I discuss tensions between Hermann Broch's theoretical arguments and his last literary work. These tensions are an expression and formal manifestation of an auctorial attempt to implement his self-declared principles of literature, such as the creation of epistemological value, the depiction of world totality, and the creation of a new form of expression, a new language, and a new myth. In each chapter, I focus on a different topos relevant to Broch's work Die Schuldlosen. With the help of close readings and a genetic analysis of the work, I demonstrate how Broch creates the unreliable citations that serve his goals. The first chapter illuminates the tension between Broch's theoretical works and Die Schuldlosen concerning the topos of romanticism. In a case study on stone imagery, I ask whether Broch's modes of citing romanticism can be considered a productive intermediate step to creating a new form. I show that Broch's citations can be qualified as unreliable citations, and how structural correspondences intensify their effect on the reader’s experience. The chapter ends with a discussion of the political function of Broch's citations. The second chapter deals with Broch's concept of myth and discusses the tension between Broch's declared intention to develop a new myth and his actual use of existing myths in his works. In two case studies, I trace Broch's citations of the Faust myth and the Don Juan myth. I show that one can understand Broch's specific citations of myth as an experiment to explore how the interruption of a recurring cultural cycle would allow for a new form to develop.

Abstract:
Herman Sörgel devised a plan, beginning in 1927, to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the whole of Europe. Atlantropa was his answer to the perceived threats that the European people faced from international competition, overpopulation, and lack of resources. The plan would have resulted in the lowering of the Mediterranean Sea and the ultimate creation of one continent comprised of the former Europe and Africa. Though the plan was never implemented, it poses a fascinating model through which historians may reconsider the time period between the end of the First and Second World Wars. This thesis examines some historical socio-political movements through the lens of Sörgel’s megaproject. Original publications from Herman Sörgel himself as well as those of two notable Atlantropa scholars, Alexander Gall and Wolfgang Voigt, explain in great detail the technical and sociological aspects of the plan. Additionally, theories from Jeffrey Herf, Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi, and Dina Brandt aid in the understanding of the man who attempted to engineer Europe out of crisis. The following analysis reveals the difficulty in placing Herman Sörgel into any singular political or social movement in his time. Though he espoused some of the same rhetoric as that of the National Socialists and pan-European movements alike, he failed to conform to any particular group. The unwavering obsession with his project consumed all of Sörgel’s energies until his death in 1952. Though all-but-forgotten, the project offers an uncommon means by which to view a tumultuous time in Europe.
