Abstract:
The subject of this article is the meaning of the personal narrative in pastoral practice and research. A hermeneutical, narrative approach is used to explore the nature and function of the personal narrative, and gives insight into the dynamics of pastoral counseling. Narrative approaches are also both possible and valuable for research and counseling. This reflects the new interest in hermeneutics found in Dutch pastoral psychological literature. Implications for research in pastoral psychology are discussed and possibilities for practice are described. The article concludes with a discussion of the hermeneutical approach.

Abstract:
The author discusses the relationship between a pastoral hermeneutics and the current social context as determined by international communication and globalization. He explores the influence of telecommunications on the human quest for meaning and the implication of this for pastoral care and counseling. A paradigm shift is proposed in terms of care to the living human web. A pastoral assessment which interprets the undergirding philosophy and belief system of globalization and its influence on human dignity is suggested; and a pastoral ministry which takes up its prophetic task and voices the needs of people in terms of a “globalization from below” is explicated.

Abstract:
Because of the recent development in pastoral care, a hermeneutic model is proposed. Metaphors in pastoral care and counselling are embedded in the life stories of parishioners. As an interpreter of Stories/stories, it is the diagnostic task of the pastor to make a pastoral assessment of the meaning and significance of these stories in terms of God images. In order to do that, the pastoral issues regarding encounter (partnership, companionship, commitment and intimacy) have been linked to the following pastoral metaphors in Scripture: shepherd, servant, wisdom and paraclete. With regard to metaphoric theology, God as Friend is our choice for a pastoral encounter which takes the notion of salvation seriously.

Kim, Sung-Hwan. "An interplay between God-images and the Korean traditional religions in a hermeneutics of pastoral care and counselling." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50266.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to determine what the influence of the God-image of parishioners within the Korean Presbyterian Church is on their faith and ability to come to terms meaningfully with the crisis of suffering. With the view to making a pastoral diagnosis and the process of assessment, a pastoral hermeneutics was applied. The basic hypothesis implemented is that inappropriate God-images, exacerbated by the religious-cultural context of the Presbyterian Church in Korea, play an important role in the parishioners' inability to come to terms meaningfully with crises and suffering. In this respect, it was found that Shamanism, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, amongst others, profile the dominant religious paradigm that functions among members. This cultural context gives rise to a concept of God that applies the theological presupposition of an almighty, fearful supreme being who controls and is in command of everything - even death. In this regard, the concepts of punishment and judgment play a decisive role. Within theodicy, God is viewed as the ultimate cause of evil. Thus, a merciless God (Ch 'unbeol) is the inevitable cause of suffering. The research found that, in Korea, theodicy relates to the monotheistic concept of a "supreme god" (HanunumIHananim), as well as the punitive component in the category of omnipotence (Ch 'unbeoIIChunneung). Because of a causal paradigm (scheme of cause and effect), manipulation is a strong factor in the Koreans' concept of faith and coping with suffering. This gives rise to a form of "pathology of faith": the manipulation of God with the view to material and health benefits. This hampers maturity in faith. In order to understand the theological concepts of judgment and power, we present the exegesis of relevant biblical texts with the view to the development of a theology of compassion. In this respect, we discuss the theological theories of four theologians, that is the existential concept of a theology of the cross (Luther); the ontological-trinitarian concept of a theology of the cross (Moltmann); the dialectic-emotional pain theology of Kitamori; and Louw's pastoralhermeneutic understanding of the cross within the framework of his promissio-therapy. This study suggests a paradigm shift away from a punitive judgmental paradigm to a sensitive compassionate paradigm. This implies a radical transformation from a hierarchical concept of power to power as a category of sympathy and identification that demonstrates God's compassion in suffering.

Stutzner, Shawn. ""Philosophical counselling in a pastoral hermeneutics of care"." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/97139.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Existential crises are now intertwined with the paradigmatic framework and noetic system of people’s lives in their search for meaning, significance and value. In this respect, a close connection exists between thought processes and values. The core issue in the research is to unlock the hermeneutical connection between thinking patterns, philosophical systems, and meaning structures at the level of noetic understanding. The basic hypothesis is that spiritual healing is realized within the qualitative interaction between systemic-hermeneutic networks and the attempt to determine how certain thinking patterns within frameworks, especially schemas of interpretation, the behaviour and attitudes of people regarding the meaning of life is determined. In this regard philosophical counselling in pastoral care can play a crucial therapeutic role. Philosophical counselling differs from Rational Emotive Therapy in the sense that meaning perception comprises more than rational thought categories (cognition) with the possible pathology of irrational thoughts. Sense meaning refers to attitudes as determined by idea-moderate wisdom systems such as embedded in cultural convention, attitudes and value systems that motivate behaviour, and a form of calling and commitment determined by existential pathos. The connection between religious thought and the dimension of God-images must be investigated. In this regard the research works with the basic presupposition that philosophical counselling can play a supportive role in a pastoral diagnosis that focuses on distinguishing between appropriate and inappropriate God-images. It is to examine how ideas about God’s involvement in human suffering (theodicy question) processes suffering within existential realities. Particular attention is given to how P. Raabe’s four-stage model of philosophical counselling can play a role in pastoral care and the making of pastoral diagnosis. Therefore, to look at the connection between faith, hope and meaning. We also look at the dynamics between noetic philosophy, life convictions, life perspectives and processes of conceptualization in a pastoral epistemology. In this respect the research joins the classical connection between wisdom and insight with the tradition of cura animarum (soul care) and the current approach in pastoral theology to enlarge cura animarum with cura vitae (the healing of life).

Grobler, Leon Pieter. "Spiritualiteit as perspektief op adolessensie : 'n studie gerig op pastorale beraad." Thesis, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16884.

Full text
Abstract:
Text in Afrikaans
Adolescence is the developmental and tccansitional stage between childhood and adulthood. Although adolescence is marked by conflict, it should not be categorised as a problem period. It is a positive stage characterised by growth and challenging new processes. Adolescence is characterised by radical changes in the physiologicalsomatic, cognitive, emotional, identity, social, moral and religious spheres. A multidimensional perspective is therefore a prerequisite for understanding and defining adolescence. Adolescence can thus be described in terms of a wide range of theories. These biological, psychoanalytical, psychosocial, anthropological and ecological-contextual theories devote no attention to a theological orientation. None of the theories can offer an integrating and unifying perspective in regard to the developmental areas. The result is a lack of a centre of structure that has an ordering and theological meaning-qi ving (semantic) function with reference to the variety of developmental changes and tasks. Within the framework of a practical-theological orientation, a Christian spirituality is considered as theological perspective on adolescence. Spirituality is a person's dynamic response to the transcendent reality. A Biblical anthropology compels us to view human beings as relational beings who live in the presence of God (the coram Deo principle). Every aspect of a person's life (the adolescent's developmental changes included!) is implicated in this relationship with God. Spirituality as centre of semantic structure functions as a spiritual lens. It presents us with a particular focus on the development of the adolescent, and it integrates and unifies the developmental processes. By means of spirituality, adolescence is reframed and viewed as a transcendenttheological vocation. The adolescent is called to internalise the Biblicalevangelical principles with reference to his/her developmental processes. The pastoral implication is that the counsellor should facilitate the process through which adolescents integrate their spirituality with their development and management of problems. This dynamics can best be achieved within the framework of a relationship (personal encounter) in which the counsellor functions on the basis of an epistemology of participation. In the counselling process adolescents must be seen as responsible beings who can contribute meaning to their development and problems. Pastoral counselling should also be an interdisciplinary, developmentally appropriate and ecosystemic process.
Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology
D. Th. (Practical Theology)

Abstract:
It is arguably clear that the AIDS epidemic has infected and affected our world in radical ways. Although every sector, including Biblical Studies, has come to its ‘senses’, by realising the urgency to respond; there still appears to be inadequate contextual engagement with the biblical text to stimulate empowering and transformative readings of the Bible. This case study is aimed at contributing to scholarship by determining the extent to which the church, the academy and Persons with HIV have adhered to stigmatising interpretations. The theoretical framework used, was the reader response method as applied within the context of African theology because it is socially located. The data was collected through focus groups and personal interviews. The purposive sampling included 70 participants, who were divided into three key categories: academic theologians, university students and persons with HIV. All participants in the study re-read 2 Samuel 13:1-14:33 in order to ascertain if the characters therein could be relevant to the context of AIDS. The overall findings showed that characters from 2 Samuel 13:1-14:33 can provide an empowering message in the context of AIDS. Although this biblical text has often been misused to promote stigma, this study confirmed that it was nonetheless possible to use the same text to unearth redemptive and empowering interpretations. Therefore the study recommends that the move towards an HIV/AIDS Biblical Hermeneutics invites socially engaged scholars along with ordinary readers to read the text together for transformative purposes.
Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
D. Abstract:
For the purpose of developing a basic theory for family pastoral work, several basic theoretical concepts are identified and discussed. The defining of families in terms of relations - rather than the traditional biological defining - is of fundamental importance for basic theoretical reflection. This 'ecological' understanding of families includes families of all shapes and forms, whilst it also reflects sociological realities and it takes into account certain theological perspectives. The aim of family pastoral work is synchronised with the relational defining of families and focus, therefore, on the multiple dynamic relational processes and phases within family systems. For this manifold relational focus, family pastoral work operates with a multidimensional perspective. The basic theory developed for family pastoral work, can be formulated as follows: Family pastoral work is dialogical care of the relationships of ecological families and it operates within context of the Kingdom.
Practical Theology
M.Th. Barnard, Hendrik Johannes Jacobus. Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13303.

Full text
Abstract:
Summaries in Afrikaans and English
Borskanker is ‘n lewensbedreigde siekte waarop geen man voorberei is nie.
A practical theological problem was identified in the ministry: a husband whose wife undergoes a mastectomy does not receive pastoral care. This problem was investigated through a qualitative research study. The research objective was answered by doing research and a literature study. This scientific research enriches the practical theology in an unique way so that the pastoral counsellor is supported and can be more competent. Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease that no husband is prepared for. The wife loses an intimate part of her body and needs to be supported by her husband. He starts to question his own manhood (identity). This loss is also a traumatic experiences for him. He is overwhelmed by his emotions and can fall into despair if he does not have the ability to process the problem. We live in the post-modern era. This has lead to the development of the Post-foundational practical theological approach. The researcher therefore decided to follow this approach in his study. This help to determine the influence of the disruption and uncertainties in the life of the man through a discourse between the practical theology, medical- and human science from a transversal perspective. Evident questions were raised for which the counsellor needs to distinguish himself with knowledge about the various pastoral approaches and techniques, appropriate knowledge of the Bible, medical- and human science. The circumstances in which the man finds himself raise questions about the meaning of his spirituality. Spirituality can be of great help for the husband. The aim of this counseling model is to facilitate the husband through the narrative approach to find the meaning of his true identity in Christ. Through the grace of God the husband becomes spiritually mature. The dependence on God through a process of transcendence changes the ‘question identity’ to an ‘identity of value and hope’. Through the work of Holy Spirit the husband is reassured of the fulfillment of the promises of salvation by God. The aim of this counseling model for the practical theology is a spiritually matured husband with a new future story.
Practical Theology
D. Th. (Practical Theology)

Abstract:
The purpose for this research journey was twofold: (1) to discover the power of certain discourses in the charismatic church context and (2) to challenge disrespectful discursive practices in order to co-operate respectful, ethical and caring ways of being. Seven leaders in charismatic churches committed themselves to this qualitative research project. The research process resulted in a confirmation by the participants that some charismatic discursive practices can be abusive and also to the acknowledgement that they too have at times fulfilled the role of abuser, even in unknowingly. This research journey ended in Hope. Hope for more transparency and trust between leaders and members, resulting in more respectful practices.
Practical Theology
M.Th. (Pastoral Therapy)
