Abstract:
The subject of this article is the meaning of the personal narrative in pastoral practice and research. A hermeneutical, narrative approach is used to explore the nature and function of the personal narrative, and gives insight into the dynamics of pastoral counseling. Narrative approaches are also both possible and valuable for research and counseling. This reflects the new interest in hermeneutics found in Dutch pastoral psychological literature. Implications for research in pastoral psychology are discussed and possibilities for practice are described. The article concludes with a discussio

Identifies some of the emerging issues in the practice and research of pastoral counseling within a multicultural context. Raises the question as to whether American pastoral counselors should advocate the preservation of a uniform cultural system or appreciate and understand the rich diversities present within society. Notes the negative aspects of the hermeneutics of suspicion and opts for the truly cosmopolitan counselor.

Abstract:
The author discusses the relationship between a pastoral hermeneutics and the current social context as determined by international communication and globalization. He explores the influence of telecommunications on the human quest for meaning and the implication of this for pastoral care and counseling. A paradigm shift is proposed in terms of care to the living human web. A pastoral assessment which interprets the undergirding philosophy and belief system of globalization and its influence on human dignity is suggested; and a pastoral ministry which takes up its prophetic task and voices the

Abstract:
Because of the recent development in pastoral care, a hermeneutic model is proposed. Metaphors in pastoral care and counselling are embedded in the life stories of parishioners. As an interpreter of Stories/stories, it is the diagnostic task of the pastor to make a pastoral assessment of the meaning and significance of these stories in terms of God images. In order to do that, the pastoral issues regarding encounter (partnership, companionship, commitment and intimacy) have been linked to the following pastoral metaphors in Scripture: shepherd, servant, wisdom and paraclete. Modernistic thinking contributed to the non-identity of women, though more rights were gradually granted to women. The perspective from which theology approached women was still embedded is a premodern biblical mindset. Pastoral care as hermeneutics: The function of metaphorical theology regarding pastoral counseling. A hermeneutics of pastoral care should be viewed as a theological issue. Hence the importance of God-language and the naming of God in pastoral care. The underlying assumption is that inappropriate images of God have a hampering effect on faith experiences. It is, therefore, impotant that a hermeneutics of pastoral care should probe into the meaning dimension of God-images in order to instil hope and foster spirituality.
