Full textThis study investigates how teachers work with growing geometric patterns, with a focus on students aged 10-12 in the west of Sweden. Specifically, it uncovers what methods teachers use and the difficulties they experience when teaching growing geometrical patterns, as well as outlining how they believe teaching in this subject can be developed. Teaching growing geometrical patterns is part of the Swedish curriculum, because it is seen as a pathway to algebra. Current research says that there are two main theories on teaching growing geometrical pattern, hierarchically or dynamically. This study takes a qualitative approach to investigate these theories further. It uses phenomenology as a theoretical framework, as a way to understand the complex phenomenon of teaching. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four primary school teachers in Sweden. The data gained from these interviews was analysed multiple times using the hermeneutical spiral, to ensure scientific rigour. The findings demonstrate that teachers prefer using hands on methods when teaching growing geometrical patterns to students, such as a method called the “math machine” and using real objects to create patterns. However, they experience difficulties when instructing students how to turn the pattern into a formula, as students often find this progression difficult to grasp. Additionally, the teachers explained that study material has a big impact on how much time teaching growing geometrical patterns is allocated in the classroom, as most of them will only teach this topic if it is covered in the textbook. For the teaching to improve, teachers need more resources regarding how to teach growing geometrical patterns, particularly when it comes to developing formula, and the teaching of the topic needs to be further promoted by the Swedish National Agency for Education.

Full textStamped in two stories linked to the leisure-time teacher profession, this scientific essay explores the boundary between being private, personal and professional in the world of school. It is a hermeneutical and phenomenological study of how we should relate to and how we can understand our colleagues and students in difficult situations. Based on the theory of practical knowledge, the essay is an exploration of how the relationship between practical knowledge and positions of power within the school can look like. The ethics also play a central role in the essay. We examine how the virtue ethics, proximity ethics and discourse ethics can play a role in the interpersonal meetings and building relationships in schools and leisure-centers. Finally, we discuss the intercultural concept based on our stories, as well as discuss how such an approach is actualized in relation to the school and the leisure center's assignment in the curriculum. The conclusion we reach is that communication, joint reflection and time are critical components in order to get a working collaboration between colleagues, but also to gain an understanding of each other and why we act as we do in certain situations. Through joint reflection we are given opportunities to share experiences with each other and thus we reach both insight and learn from each other's practical knowledge

Full textThis is a qualitative essay which is based upon interviews with second-year, upper-secondary students taking an Esthetic Program and studying the core subject Esthetic Orientation (EOS). In the introduction, the purpose and role of the esthetic subjects in the school are illustrated, e.g. practical knowledge versus theoretical knowledge, sensory learning as well as a decreased focus on the esthetic subjects’ within schools are discussed. The purpose of the study is to describe upper-secondary students’ experiences of integrated teaching of esthetic subjects in school. The research questions focus on how students reason about their self-image following lessons that incorporate dance, drama, art and music. The student interviews highlight the importance of the group in the formation of an individual student’s self-image as well as depict how students describe their bodies in relation to the physical elements in the teaching of an esthetic subject. The study uses a phenomenological hermeneutic approach and the interviews are analyzed using Amedeo Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis method. The analysis of the interviews shows how the students experience their newly discovered knowledge of the different esthetic subjects and how this has increased their understanding of themselves and others. The students describe their experience of integrated esthetic teaching by discussing the possible influence the EOS course has had on them as individuals. The students speak about creativity, discovery, breaking new ground, strengths, weaknesses, trust, courage, limitations and fears as well as the body as a form of expression and a gleaner of knowledge. The students’ desire to learn as well as will to learn is also highlighted. The students found varying methods to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas through the EOS course. The study demonstrates the important role esthetic subjects have in schools, which is proven by both examining current research that supports the esthetic subjects’ role in schools as well as by describing students’ positive experiences of subject-integrated esthetic teaching.

Full textThe curriculum (Skolverket, 2011) and Education Act (SFS 2010:800) indicates that education must be adapted to the students' abilities and needs. The National Agency for Education (2011) determines that there are deficiencies in how the schools practice such education and also my experience was that this included some challenges. Against this background, this study aim became to describe, interpret and understand the meaning of the teachers’ experiences of individualizes their own teaching and any related challenges. To investigate this, a qualitative method with interviews as a data collection technique was used, where five practicing teachers were interviewed. A hermeneutic - phenomenological approach was used as a base. The results showed that individualized education is not easy to do, as it's much up to the teacher to interpret and carry out the education with the difficulties it means. There are many factors that will affect the education and the analysis of the result show that these factors work in combination with each other and are what enables individualized education.

Full textWithin a nurses’ work tasks, venous blood tests and onset of peripheral venouscatheters (PVK) are included. Even when the patient has a blood infection this hasto be performed, which puts the nurses’ professionalism and biological safety tothe test. Nurses’ pre-experiences of needle-sticks of patients with known bloodborneinfections are issues that need further discussions. Does the needle-stick precede feelings of fear or discomfort? This study aimed to investigate the nurse's thoughts and experiences of needle-sticking a patient with a known blood-borne infection. A hermeneutic phenomenological research approach was chosen. Life-World Interviews conducted with six nurses at a general infection clinic in southern Sweden. A global phenomenon was observed from the collected data material and was formulated as the nurses’ thoughts of a needle-stick of a patient with a known blood-borne infection, doesn’t need to correspond to the experiences of the needle-stick, as it’s shown by its actions. Three main themes, thought, feeling and action could link the nurses’ pre-experiences of a needle-stick of a patient with a known blood-borne infection. Under the main themes, ten sub-themes were formulated. The cognitive theory was used to explain the study results and develop a greater understanding of the identified phenomenon. Nurses’ thoughts and feelings before the needle-stick of a patient with a known blood-borne infectionshould be investigated further to obtain a deeper understanding.
