Alan Moore’s Promethea (1999 to 2005) is among the most explicitly “gnostic,” “esoteric,” and “occultist” comics strips ever published. Hailed as a virtuoso performance in the art of comics writing, its intellectual content and the nature of its spiritual message have been neglected by scholars. While the attainment of gnosis is clearly central to Moore’s message, the underlying metaphysics is more congenial to the panentheist perspective of ancient Hermetism than to Gnosticism in its classic typological sense defined by dualism and anti-cosmic pessimism. AbstractResearch made by Schuhmann and Bredekamp has pointed up the unsuspected links between Hobbes and one of the ancient traditions best loved by Renaissance philosophy: Hermeticism. Our goal will be to proceed further and to stress the Hermetic significance implicit in the formula "mortal God". If Asclepius can act as a source for the theme of the fabrication of gods, it does not fit in with the antithesis ("mortal god/immortal God") typical of the Leviathan. A proper source for this topic can rather be found in treatise X ("Clavis") of the Corpus Hermeticum, well known to Ficino and to Iu

The present contribution aims to show that Zosimus has in fact harmonized the account of 1 Enoch with the Physica of Hermes, identifying the Watchers of the former treatise with wicked angels who perverted the authentic art of alchemy, originally revealed to Hermes by Chemeu, who should be id

Abstract:
Chapter 5 demonstrates that throughout the 1910s, Colman Smith’s interest in and involvement with the occult revival was an important catalyst for her maturation as a symbolic feminist artist. In November of 1901 she became initiated into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn as the group was beginning to fracture over struggles for control that, at least in part, had their roots in the rapidly changing roles open to women in the early twentieth century. While she did not advance beyond the initiatory levels of the Golden Dawn, it was through the group that she met A. E. Waite and designed the images for the storied tarot deck. This chapter asserts that she began working on designs for the deck earlier than previously believed, and that her music paintings of the 1907–08 period share several similarities with her tarot designs, including frequent use of the Rückenfigur technique, depicting figures with their back to the viewer, and tower symbolism. Based on new archival discoveries, this chapter shows that Colman Smith’s involvement with the women’s suffrage movement, which commenced in earnest in 1909, was an important influence for both her tarot designs and the evolution of her feminist symbolic art.

Abstract In these two final chapters I want to provide present readers with an idea of how the reading of the physiognomony in these books worked its natural magic in such a way as to bring the reader to some form of self-knowledge. I will also try to offer a way of understanding how, in the early modern period, the hermetic sense of reading the art of physiognomy gave rise to an ‘internal cinema’ that was thought to be capable of bringing about a self-transformation, or what was referred to in the Corpus hermeticum as a ‘regeneration’. With the gestation of time, and with all the intellectual, religious, social, political, and cultural changes that took place between the late fifteenth century and the late eighteenth century, this intensely religious process of ‘regeneration’ was lost sight of, and reading a ‘book on physiognomy’ was transformed into a much more light-hearted form of recreation.

Abstract The Hermetic and theosophic library brought to New England by Charles Lane and Bronson Alcott certainly influenced Alcott and Emerson, but there were other Transcendentalists who also reveal a very Hermetic understanding of nature—perhaps most importantly and surprisingly, Margaret Fuller. One might have surmised that Fuller had some Hermetic leanings from Hawthorne’s depiction of Zenobia in The Blithedale Romance, but there has been relatively little scholarly attention paid to this subject. The original edition of Fuller’s Woman in the Nineteenth Century is preceded by an obviously Hermetic illustration—a serpent biting its own tail and forming a circle, within which are two superimposed triangles, one black, point upward, another white, point downward, behind the first.

Abstract In this section, short biographies of Henri and Mina Bergson are set forth, including a description of the rituals practiced by Mina within the Hermetic societies of the Golden Dawn and Alpha et Omega. The question of knowledge is addressed in more depth, and how these hermetic groups also acted as places of para-academic and nonstandard learning. This was especially true for their female members, who had no other access to higher education, whereas the Golden Dawn practiced a strict equality among the sexes in its organization, beliefs, and activities. This feminist strain of thought is then followed through the early reception of Henri Bergson’s philosophy, its criticism, and subsequent scholarly interpretations. There is a subsequent discussion of how “Bergsonism” was regarded as a feminine philosophy (often by its attackers), was popular with female audiences, and was latterly preserved within the academy by women researchers.

This paper investigates the so-called “magical hymn” to Hermes, a short hexametrical invocation preserved in the corpus of the Greek magical papyri (PGM) in three different papyri of different dates: PGM V 401–20, VII 668–80, and XVIIb (fourth, third, and second/third centuries CE respectively). Some of the most interesting features are analyzed in the light of both Greek and Egyptian traditions in order to illuminate the cultural background of the divine persona described by the hymn. Though the composition appears to address a quite balanced syncretistic deity, a more thorough examination reveals that the nature of the god addressed, despite the Greek meter, is closer to Hermes’ Egyptian counterpart, Thoth. Nevertheless, the hymn does not have to be the product of philosophical Hermetism (as it has often been argued), but it could just represent an earlier stage of translation of the Egyptian conception into Greek.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to encourage debate and sharing of studies and research on the use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) in poultry feed. It is observed that in Brazilian poultry, feeds are mainly based on cereals, which must be supplemented with high quality animal protein and essential amino acids. Among the alternative ingredients for monogastric diets, the use of insects has stood out and among the insects used, black soldier fly flour or BSF (Hermetia illucens) is an attractive candidate, as it contains excellent nutritional characteristics and high production of biomass, in addition to its ability to promote the degradation of a series of materials of organic origin, converting them into an important source for animal feed. It is concluded that, although promising as a food component in the diet of poultry, the current cost to produce these insects in the country is still high and a relevant factor when compared to sources such as fish meal and soybean meal. Other challenges, such as the standardization of the bromatological compositions of flours derived from these insects, increased production, as well as a cultural change in the Western way of seeing these organisms, are issues to be addressed.

Two of the primary causes of MEMS failure are stiction of the moving microparts due to moisture from environment and particulate contamination due to the degradation of organic materials. The use of getters such as sputtered Ti and Ba to maintain a moisture free environment within the MEMS package has been proposed and is well documented. Though getters ensure a moisture free environment within the package, they do not ensure hermeticity over long periods of time. Hermetic packaging is sometimes desirable for MEMS and optical MEMS (especially those that require long shelf lives) in order to gu

Hermetic housings are required for the vast majority of electronics used in RF microwave electronics to protect the gallium arsenide and silicon devices from the environment. A common housing style includes a metal ring frame that is brazed onto a metal or ceramic base. The housing is populated with electronic devices and circuits and then hermetically sealed with a thin metal lid. For high volume manufacturing, lids are often attached by a resistance weld using a seam seal process. The interior hermitic volume is sealed at or near one atmosphere internal pressure. Since the housing may be sub

Abstract This paper presents a numerical method for simulating the thermal and fluid-dynamic behavior of hermetic compressors in the whole compressor domain. The model of fluid flow is developed by integrating transient one-dimensional conservation equations of continuity, momentum and energy through all of the elements from suction line to discharge line. The model describing thermal behavior is based on heat balance in the components such as muffler, connecting tubes and orifices. The calculation of the thermodynamic and transport properties for different refrigerants at various conditions h

Abstract This paper presents the mechanical and electric machine design of a 27krpm rotating test rig aimed at reducing technical risks with hermetic oil-free super-critical carbon dioxide (sCO2) turbomachinery. The test rig rotor system is based on a conceptual turbomachine design discussed in a companion paper that evaluates a sCO2 waste heat recovery (WHR) unit for land-based gas turbines at natural gas (NG) compressor stations. The key novelty of the hermetic sCO2 turbomachine concept is the utilization of additively manufactured CO2 gas bearings and a CO2-immersed direct-drive permanent m

Abstract:
Climate change, conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have caused a sharp increase in food insecurity globally. Reducing food loss - a decrease in the quantity and/or quality of food that takes place from production through to processing - in places where food insecurity is most severe has the potential to be a win-win for food security, climate outcomes, and for commercially driven agribusinesses. This report reviews the common drivers of food loss in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, which include inadequate storage, lack of cold chain, and poor post-harvest and distribution
