Abstract:
The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg as a royal collection and cultural treasury reveals the aesthetic preferences of a nation that has always stood on the cultural and geographical periphery of Europe. Initially an imperial collection under Peter I, patrons of the Hermitage focused attention on collecting canonical European paintings and also emulating Western models of display. In this way, the Russian aristocracy superimposed itself on Europe's culture through the construction of a collection to rival its great European contemporaries.
The development of a standardized practice of display has widely been studied in relation to Western museums but similar attention has not been extended to the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. I argue that Nicholas was able to use objects of art and strategies of display to assert a greater role in the European state system of the mid-nineteenth century. While the supposed transparency conveyed by the collection's public opening was meant to make Russia seem less threatening to Western powers, in reality the yolk of autocracy was as tight as ever.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on two early and middle Ming (1368-1580) artists and deals with the role of Chinese historiography in the perpetuation of the dichotomy between the so-called "professional" and the so-called "scholar-amateur" artist. While traditional Chinese historical and biographical sources are an invaluable tool for the sinologist, including the Chinese art historian, the convention adopted by Chinese historians of casting subjects into standard characterized roles has contributed to this dichotomy and resulted in the ongoing debate over the value of the professional artist in China. Historically, Chinese critics and collectors have made a distinction between professional and amateur artists. The traditional Chinese critical bias has been in favour of the scholar-amateur artist. In fact, in much critical literature there is a stigma attached to professionalism in painting. The major initial Western studies of Chinese painting represented a continuation of the traditional Chinese dichotomies. More recently, various kinds of positions have been taken up by Western scholars. James Cahill suggests that a correlation can be made between an artist's painting style and social and economic factors (such as lifestyle, formal training, means of livelihood, demands of patrons, and so on). Richard Barnhart instead defends the professional artist: He believes that Cahill perpetuates the bias in favour of the amateur artist, and that a correlation between an artist's style and social and economic factors is not useful, being too restrictive and general. Their debate was taken up in a series of letters, and this debate has continued down to the present. Some of the most recent Western interpretations attempt to try to break down the earlier dichotomies, and my research supports this interpretive trend. In this context the thesis examines the life and works of two relatively minor artists of the Ming dynasty, the "professional" artist Wu Wei (1459-1508) and the "scholar-amateur" artist Lu Zhi (1496-1576). I discuss the Chinese biographical tradition and have translated the appropriate texts and biographies. Then by examining the paintings themselves in the context of the two artists' environments — Wu Wei in Beijing and Nanjing and Lu Zhi in Suzhou — I show that both of these artists enjoyed the freedom of working in a wide variety of different painting traditions. Early and middle Ming painting criticism is also examined, in addition to the influence of Late Ming (1580-1644) painting criticism and its effect on our perception of Chinese artists. In terms of style, aesthetics, and intellectual outlook, Wu Wei and Lu Zhi may, at first, appear to stand at opposite poles. However, my study of the life circumstances of Wu Wei and Lu Zhi reveals that they share surprisingly similar backgrounds, concerns, and views on their artwork. In addition, an examination of the works of these two artists suggests that a greater fluidity of style and of subject matter existed in the early and middle Ming period than one would expect from the theories based on Late Ming criticism. In other words, the distinction between professional and scholar-amateur artists is overdrawn: Wu Wei and Lu Zhi do not fit neatly into the later understandings of accepted categories or roles, nor do their paintings entirely accord with the theories originating in the Late Ming Period.
Arts, Faculty of
Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
Alfred Jackson was an enslaved African American born on The Hermitage plantation (outside Nashville, Tennessee) of President Andrew Jackson around 1810, and lived most of his life on the plantation. Staff from The Hermitage wished to better understand and interpret lifeways of those once enslaved on the plantation, but the date of construction of Alfred’s Cabin first had to be determined. Was it built when Alfred was enslaved or was a freedman? We extracted nearly 100 core samples from eastern red cedar logs used to construct the cabin. Of these, 39 cores were used to develop a master tree-ring chronology for the cabin. Crossdating of the Alfred’s Cabin chronology was accomplished using an eastern red cedar chronology developed by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Tree- Ring Laboratory at Columbia University in Palisades, New York. The 39 series from Alfred’s Cabin resulted in a high-quality master tree-ring chronology, with an average inter-series correlation of 0.66 and an average mean sensitivity of 0.28. Graphical (skeleton plot and line plot) comparison and statistical crossdating with COFECHA anchored the Alfred’s Cabin chronology firmly between 1749 and 1842 (r = 0.45, n = 94 yrs, t = 4.83, p < 0.0001). Cutting dates of these 39 trees ranged from 1841 to 1843. This latter date indicates that the final trees used to construct the cabin were harvested in spring or early summer of 1843, with final construction of Alfred’s Cabin occurring soon after.

Abstract:
The idea of rhythm as applied to interior space is the basis for this thesis. The site is an old warehouse with a structure that contains a repetitive rhythm in the form of a columnar grid and a corresponding fenestration pattern, yet the building also has an atypical wedge shape. The program is a design business incubator, a place where design business startups, recent graduates of Virginia design programs, can begin their design careers and find their rhythm in a cooperative and supportive environment, a collage of design businesses, if you will. Rhythm is essential in our lives, from the beating of our hearts to the rising and setting of the sun. Rhythm is also essential to spatial design. Our built environments require some form of pattern in order to help create a sense of stability and familiarity with our surroundings. Whether in music or painting, poetry or design, rhythm starts with simple repetition. But rhythm moves beyond mere repetition to include a diverse assortment of elements. The more complex a rhythm, the more we can become involved with that rhythm and consequently with the object that provides the rhythm. How does rhythm translate into space and time? How is it possible to develop a more complex and expressive rhythm in a particular space? What might be considered more expressive? How can this old warehouse function as a design business incubator while new rhythms are introduced into the mix of old rhythms through the fulfillment of this program and thereby create a collage of space?

Abstract:
Hermit leaves the world for meeting God. This fact that accompanied the Church all the long of her history. In Champagne and Lorraine, eremitical life appears especially dynamic at three times : end of 5th century to end of 7th century, end of 10th to 12th century and end of 16th to end of 17th century. This last era is the golden age of the movement. Reasons of revival of eremitical life in the second half of 16th century are manies. Books praise of solitude. The success of spiritual currents (dévotio moderna and spanish spirituality) favorable to solitude is real. Climate factors favour the movement. Wars of Religion, the League lead to the desire to leave a world of violence. The state of regular clergy plays a part too. Send to the pastoral or not yet reformed, it is not satisfactory for peoples who search solitude, all the more that monastic rules are for some peoples a too rigid framework. Finally, some hermits have an aura and arouse vacations. In the 17th and in the beginning of the 18th century, literatur and arts spread a positiv picture of hermit. But it’s mean an old or faraway hermit. The contemporary hermit is criticized. The first is an independent spirit out of place in an order society. So, supervision of hermits in the first decades of the 17th century is made by diocesan congregations at Langres (1623) and Toul (1655 and 1676).The 410 hermitages listed in Lorraine and Champagne at the beginning of the 18th century show the success of eremitical life. But the result is not homogenous in the space. eremitical life is principally present ant active in dioceses of Toul, Metz and Langres. Dioceses of Verdun, Reims and above Châlons and Troyes are clearly less concerned. Here play regional idiosyncrasies : importance of protestantism and jansenism in these dioceses create a spiritual competition unfavorable to eremitical life and the personality of the bishop, when he’s in disfavor about hermits, as Le Tellier at Reims, take a big importance. The study of hermitages in sacred geography shake the myth of hermitage faraway of all. The hermit, often born in lower or middle social classes, has a career sometime complex (widowerhood, poverty). His spirituality is often the same of Christian people but sometime exceptional and he is seeing as a saint. The 1670 decade is the beginning of a time disfavor to hermits. The bishops of Reims then Metz and Verdun forget hermits in their dioceses. The Age of Enlightenment makes fun of hermits in their woods. Nevertheless their quality is proved. Eremitical life declines at the 18th century and miss practically behind the French Revolution. Hermits are expelled and hermitages sold. Some hermits exist at the XIXth century. Often, the hermitage is broken after the death of the last hermit. Only the chapel remains. Eremitical life miss physically but literature and art perpetuate an imaginary hermit

This construction programme deals with a hermit colony located in the western part of the Vysočina Region. This hermit colony has been established to provide accommodation for women living in this area permanently while offering an opportunity of occasional relaxation for people who are living hectic lives in urban environment. The aim of my project is to design the remaining parts of the colony, i.e. two hermitages and the community’s chapel. A hermitage is a one-storey building intended for one person only. The load-bearing walls of the individual hermitages are designed to be built from different materials (wooden and masonry constructions) whereas the elevational structures of all the buildings are to be the same. The chapel’s wall system combines stone and wood. The chapel will serve solely the purposes of the community. The main objective of my project is to respect and maintain the natural features of the landscape to the maximum extent possible.

Barucchieri, Bianca. "Affine Hermite-Lorentz manifolds." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BORD0153/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work we deal with crystallographic groups, i.e. the subgroups of the group of affine transformations that act properly discontinuously and cocompactly on affine space. In otherwords they are the fundamental groups of compact and complete affine manifolds. In this thesis we classify such groups with the additional hypothesis that the linear part preserves a Hermitian form of signature (n,1). Grunewald and Margulis proved that such crystallographic groups are virtually solvable (the Auslander conjecture states that this is always true). Our classification is for n ≤ 3. It corresponds to a classification, up to finite covering, and for complex dimension at most 4, of flat compact complete Hermite-Lorentz manifolds. This is inspired by the works done by Bieberbach, then Fried, and finally Grunewald and Margulis who classified crystallographic groups whose line arpart preserves a positive definite or Lorentzian quadratic form. Making this classification we had to classify a family of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras. We then extended this classification toall the 8-dimensional 3-step nilpotent Lie algebras having the free 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra on 3generators as quotient. This result can be seen as a step in the direction of a general classification of nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension 8. We then wondered which of these Lie algebras admit flat pseudo-Riemannian metrics and gave a partial answer to this question

Brookes, Richard G. "The quadratic Hermite-Padé approximation." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mathematics, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8886.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the existence, behaviour and performance of the quadratic Hermite-Padé approximation. It starts with the definition of the general Hermite-Padé approximation. Some of the problems which arise, particularly those of finding Hermite-Padé forms and the existence of approximations are discussed. Chapter 3 solves the existence problem in the quadratic case whilst Chapter 2 presents a recurrence algorithm for finding quadratic forms which can easily be extended to general Hermite-Padé forms. Chapters 4 and 5 compare the performance of the quadratic, Padé and Taylor approximations using particular examples over a variety of regions. Many graphs and contour maps of the various approximations and error functions are given. The quadratic approximation is shown to be superior in these cases. Finally, in Chapter 6, a theorem concerning sequences of quadratic approximations is presented and the structure of the quadratic table is explored.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present results about some eigenvalue statistics of the beta-Hermite ensembles, both in the classical cases corresponding to beta = 1, 2, 4, that is the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (consisting of real symmetric matrices), the Gaussian unitary ensemble (consisting of complex Hermitian matrices) and the Gaussian symplectic ensembles (consisting of quaternionic self-dual matrices) respectively. We also look at the less explored general beta-Hermite ensembles (consisting of real tridiagonal symmetric matrices). Specifically we look at the empirical distribution function and two different scalings of the largest eigenvalue. The results we present relating to these statistics are the convergence of the empirical distribution function to the semicircle law, the convergence of the scaled largest eigenvalue to the Tracy-Widom distributions, and with a different scaling, the convergence of the largest eigenvalue to 1. We also use simulations to illustrate these results. For the Gaussian unitary ensemble, we present an expression for its level density. To aid in understanding the Gaussian symplectic ensemble we present properties of the eigenvalues of quaternionic matrices. Finally, we prove a theorem about the symmetry of the order statistic of the eigenvalues of the beta-Hermite ensembles.

Abstract:
This thesis is comprised of three main parts: The Hermite-Hadamard inequality on discrete time scales, the fractional Hermite-Hadamard inequality, and Karush-Kuhn- Tucker conditions on higher dimensional discrete domains. In the first part of the thesis, Chapters 2 & 3, we define a convex function on a special time scale T where all the time points are not uniformly distributed on a time line. With the use of the substitution rules of integration we prove the Hermite-Hadamard inequality for convex functions defined on T. In the fourth chapter, we introduce fractional order Hermite-Hadamard inequality and characterize convexity in terms of this inequality. In the fifth chapter, we discuss convexity on n{dimensional discrete time scales T = T1 × T2 × ... × Tn where Ti ⊂ R , i = 1; 2,…,n are discrete time scales which are not necessarily periodic. We introduce the discrete analogues of the fundamental concepts of real convex optimization such as convexity of a function, subgradients, and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. We close this thesis by two remarks for the future direction of the research in this area.

Abstract:

Both wavelet and subdivision analysis are based on the concept of a matrix–refinable function, i.e. a finitely supported matrix function which is self-replicating in the sense that it can be expressed as a linear combination of the integer shifts of its own dilation with factor 2: F = TAF = å k∈Z F(2 ・ −k)Ak. The coefficients Ak, k ∈ Z of d × d matrices, of this linear combination constitute the so-called matrix- mask sequence. Wavelets are in fact constructed as a specific linear combination of the integer shifts of the 2-dilation of a matrix- refinable function cf. [2; 9], whereas the convergence of the associated matrix- subdivision scheme c0 = c, cr+1 = SAcr, r ∈ Z+, SA : c = (ck : k ∈ Z) 7→ SAc = å ℓ∈Z Ak−2ℓ cℓ : k ∈ Z ! , subject to the necessary condition that rank := dim   \ ǫ∈{0,1} n y ∈ Rd : Qǫy = y o   > 0, Qǫ := å j∈Z Aǫ+2j, ǫ ∈ {0, 1}, ( cf. [26]) , implies the existence of a finitely supported matrix- function which is refinable with respect to the mask coefficients defining the refinement equation and the subdivision scheme. Throughout this thesis, we investigate in time–domain for a given matrix mask sequence, the related issues of the existence of a matrix–refinable function and the convergence of the corresponding matrix– cascade algorithm, and finally we apply some results to the particular research area of Hermite interpolatory subdivision schemes. The dissertation is organized as follows: In order to provide a certain flexibility or freedom over the project, we established in Chapter 1 the equivalence relation between the matrix cascade algorithm and the matrix subdivision scheme, subject to a well defined class of initial iterates. Despite the general noncommutativity of matrices, we make use in the full rank case Qǫ = I, ǫ ∈ {0, 1}, of a symbol factorization, to develop in Chapter 2 some useful tools, yielding a convergence result which comes as close to the scalar case as possible: we obtained a concrete sufficient condition on the mask sequence based on the matrix version of the generating function introduced in [3, page 22] for existence and convergence. Whilst the conjecture on nonnegative masks was confirmed in 2005 by Zhou [29], our result on scalar case provided a progress for general mask sequences. We then applied to obtain a new one-parameter family of refinable functions which includes the cardinal splines as a special case, as well as corresponding convergent subdivision schemes. With the view to broaden the class of convergent matrix-masks, we replaced in chapter 3 the full rank condition by the rank one condition Qǫu = u, ǫ ∈ {0, 1}, u := (1, . . . , 1)T, then improved the paper by Dubuc and Merrien [13] by using the theory of rank subdivision schemes by Micchelli and Sauer [25; 26], and end up this improvement with a generalization of [13, Theorem 13, p.8] in to the context of rank subdivision schemes. In Chapter 4, we translated the concrete convergence criteria of the general theory from Theorem 3.2, based on the r-norming factor introduced in [13, Definition 6, p.6], into the context of rank, factorization and spectral radius (cf. [26]), and presented a careful analysis of the relationship between the two concepts. We then proceed with generalizations and improvements: we classified the matrix cascade algorithms in term of rank = 1, 2, . . . , d, and provided a complete characterization of each class with the use of a more general r−norming factor namely τ(r)-norming factor. On the other hand, we presented numerical methods to determine, if possible, the convergence of each class of matrix cascade algorithms. In both the scalar and matrix cases above, we also obtained explicitly the geometric constant appearing in the estimate for the geometric convergence of thematrix-cascade algorithm iterates to the matrix- refinable function. This same geometric convergence rate therefore also holds true for the corresponding matrix–cascade algorithm. Finally, in Chapter 5, we apply the theory and algorithms developed in Chapter 4 to the particular research area of Hermite interpolatory subdivision schemes: we provided a new convergence criterium, and end up with new convergence ranges of the parameters’ values of the famous Hermite interpolatory subdivision scheme with two parameters, due to Merrien [23].

Abstract:
Let E/F be a field extension of degree n. A classical problem is to find a generating element in E whose characteristic polynomial over F is as simple is possible. An 1861 theorem of Ch. Hermite [5] asserts that for every separable field E/F of degree n there exists an element a ∈ E whose characteristic polynomial is of the form f(x) = x⁵ +b₂x³ +b₄x+b₅ or equivalently, tr{E/F}(a) = tr{E/F}(a³) = 0. A similar result for extensions of degree 6 was proven by P. Joubert in 1867; see [6]. In this thesis we ask if these results can be extended to field extensions of larger degree. Specifically, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a field F, a prime p and an integer n ≥ 3 to have the following property: Every separable field extension E/F of degree n contains an element a ∈ E such that a generates E over F, and tr{E/F}(a) = tr{E/F}(a^p) = 0. As a corollary we show for infinitely many new values of n that the theorems of Hermite and Joubert do not extend to field extensions of degree n. We conjecture the same for more values of n and provide computational evidence for a large number of these.
Science, Faculty of
Mathematics, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
In the vein of Klein's Erlangen program, the research works of E. Cartan, M.Gromov and others, this work straddles between geometry and group actions. The overall theme is to understand the isometry groups of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Precisely, following a "vague conjecture" of Gromov, our aim is to classify Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds whose isometry group act’s not properly, i.e that it’s action does not preserve any auxiliary Riemannian metric. Several studies have been made in the case of the Lorentzian metrics (i.e of signature (- + .. +)). However, general pseudo-Riemannian case seems out of reach. The Hermite-Lorentz structures are between the Lorentzian case and the former general pseudo-Riemannian, i.e of signature (- -+ ... +). In addition, it’s defined on complex manifolds, and promises an extra-rigidity. More specifically, a Hermite-Lorentz structure on a complex manifold is a pseudo-Riemannian metric of signature (- -+ ... +), which is Hermitian in the sense that it’s invariant under the almost complex structure. By analogy with the classical Hermitian case, we naturally define a notion of Kähler-Lorentz metric. We cite as example the complex Minkowski space in where, in a sense, we have a one-dimensional complex time (the real point of view, the time is two-dimensional). We cite also the de Sitter and Anti de Sitter complex spaces. They have a constant holomorphic curvature, and generalize in this direction the projective and complex hyperbolic spaces. This thesis focuses on the Hermite-Lorentz homogeneous spaces. In addition with given examples, two other symmetric spaces can naturally play the role of complexification of the de Sitter and anti de Sitter real spaces. The main result of the thesis is a rigidity theorem of these symmetric spaces: any space Hermite-Lorentz isotropy irreducible homogeneous is one of the five previous symmetric spaces. Other results concern the case where we replace the irreducible hypothesis by the fact that the isometry group is semisimple

Abstract:
Algorithms for estimating the statistical properties of streams of data in real time, as well as for the efficient analysis of massive data sets, are becoming particularly pertinent given the increasing ubiquity of such data. In this thesis we introduce novel approaches to sequential (online) estimation in both stationary and non-stationary settings based on Hermite series density estimators. In the univariate context we apply Hermite series based distribution function estimators to sequential cumulative distribution function estimation. These distribution function estimators are particularly useful because they allow the sequential estimation of the full cumulative distribution function. This is in contrast to the empirical distribution function estimator and smooth kernel distribution function estimator which only allow sequential cumulative probability estimation at predefined values on the support of the associated density function. We explore the asymptotic consistency and robustness properties of the Hermite series based cumulative distribution function estimator thereby redressing a gap in the literature. Given the sequential Hermite series based distribution function estimator, we obtain sequential quantile estimates numerically. Our algorithms go beyond existing sequential quantile estimation algorithms in that they allow arbitrary quantiles (as opposed to pre-specified quantiles) to be estimated at any point in time, in both the static and dynamic quantile estimation settings. In the bivariate context we introduce a Hermite series based sequential estimator for the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and provide algorithms applicable in both the stationary and non-stationary settings. To treat the the non-stationary setting, we introduce a novel, exponentially weighted estimator for the Spearman's rank correlation, which allows the local nonparametric correlation of a bivariate data stream to be tracked. To the best of our knowledge this is the first algorithm to be proposed for estimating a time-varying Spearman's rank correlation that does not rely on a moving window approach. We explore the practical effectiveness of the Hermite series based estimators through real data and simulation studies, demonstrating competitive performance compared to leading existing algorithms. The potential applications of this work are manifold. Our sequential distribution function and quantile estimation algorithms can be applied to real time anomaly and outlier detection, real time provisioning for future demand as well as real time risk estimation for example. The Hermite series based Spearman's rank correlation estimator can be applied to fast and robust online calculation of correlation which may vary over time. Possible machine learning applications include fast feature selection and hierarchical clustering on massive data sets amongst others.

Abstract:
Accelerating the convergence rate of Krylov subspace methods with parallelizable preconditioners is essential for obtaining effective iterative solvers for very large linear systems of equations. Substructuring provides a framework for constructing robust and parallel preconditioners for linear systems arising from the discretization of boundary value problems. Although collocation is a very general and effective discretization technique for many PDE problems, there has been relatively little work on preconditioners for collocation problems. This thesis proposes two preconditioning methods for solving linear systems of equations arising from Hermite bicubic collocation discretization of elliptic partial differential equations on square domains with mixed boundary conditions. The first method, called edge preconditioning, is based on a decomposition of the domain in parallel strips, and the second, called edge-vertex preconditioning, is based on a two-dimensional decomposition. The preconditioners are derived in terms of two special rectangular grids -- a coarse grid with diameter H and a hybrid coarse/fine grid -- which together with the fine grid of diameter h provide the framework for approximating the interface problem induced by substructuring. We show that the proposed methods are effective for nonsymmetric indefinite problems, both from the point of view of the cost per iteration and of the number of iterations. For an appropriate choice of H, the edge preconditioner requires O(N) arithmetic operations per iteration, while the edge-vertex preconditioner requires O(N 4/3 ) operations, where N is the number of unknowns. For the edge-vertex preconditioner, the number of iterations is almost constant when h and H decrease such that H/h is held constant and it increases very slowly with H when h is held constant. For both the edge- and edge-vertex preconditioners the number of iterations depends only weakly on h when H is constant. The edge-vertex preconditioner outperforms the edge-preconditioner for small enough H. Numerical experiments illustrate the parallel efficiency of the preconditioners which is similar or even better than that provided by the well-known PETSc parallel software library for scientific computing.
Ph. Abstract:
The main goal of the thesis is to construct explicit, s-stage, strong-stability-preserving (SSP) Hermite–Birkhoff (HB) time discretization methods of order p with nonnegative coefficients for the integration of hyperbolic conservation laws. The Shu–Osher form and the canonical Shu–Osher form by means of the vector formulation for SSP Runge–Kutta (RK) methods are extended to SSP HB methods. The SSP coefficients of k-step, s-stage methods of order p, HB(k,s,p), as combinations of k-step methods of order (p − 3) with s-stage explicit RK methods of order 4, and k-step methods of order (p-4) with s-stage explicit RK methods of order 5, respectively, for s = 4, 5,..., 10 and p = 4, 5,..., 12, are constructed and compared with other methods. The good efficiency gains of the new, optimal, SSP HB methods over other SSP methods, such as Huang’s hybrid methods and RK methods, are numerically shown by means of their effective SSP coefficients and largest effective CFL numbers. The formulae of these new, optimal methods are presented in their Shu–Osher form.

Abstract:
A new N-dimensional digital modulation technique is proposed as a bandwidth efficient method for the transmission of digital data. The technique uses an antipodal scheme in which parallel binary data signs baseband orthogonal waveforms derived from Hermite polynomials. Orthogonality guarantees recoverability of the data from N simultaneously transmitted Hermite waveforms. The signed Hermite waveform is transmitted over a radio link using either amplitude or frequency modulation. The bandwidth efficiency of the amplitude Hermite method is found to be as good as filtered BPSK in practice, while the bit error rates for both modulations are identical. Hermite Keying (HK), the FM modulation version of the N-dimensional Hermite transmission, outperforms constant envelope FSK in terms of spectrum efficiency. With a simple FM detector, the bit error rate of HK is as good as that of non-coherent FSK. In a frequency selective fading channel, the simulation results suggest that specific data bits of HK are relatively secure from errors, which is beneficial in some applications. Symbol synchronization is critical to the system. An optimal synchronization method for the N-dimensional antipodal scheme in additive white Gaussian noise channel is derived. Simulation results confirm that the synchronizer can operate successfully at E/No of 3 dB.
Ph. D.

An analysis of dispersion and dissipation properties of Hermite methods applied to linear hyperbolic equations in one and two dimensional space is discussed. We employed two approaches for this analysis. First, we derive a modified equation to approximate the leading order dissipation errors in the Hermite scheme. Second, we numerically compute the dispersion relation of discrete Fourier modes of the scheme by a modal analysis. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the resolution requirements of Hermite methods. We also discuss an implementation of Hermite methods on overlapping grids. Here we investigate the accuracy of the solution to linear acoustics in a two-dimensional disk. Numerical results show that Hermite methods accurately propagate waves without a need of artificial dissipation on overlapping regions. In support of large-scale computations of compressible flows, we study the stability of Hermite methods for hyperbolic-parabolic equations and also experiment with various methods for treating product of nonlinearities.

Albishi, Njwd. "Three-and four-derivative Hermite-Birkhoff-Obrechkoff solvers for stiff ODE." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/34332.

Full text
Abstract:
Three- and four-derivative k-step Hermite-Birkhoff-Obrechkoff (HBO) methods are constructed for solving stiff systems of first-order differential equations of the form y'= f(t,y), y(t0) = y0. These methods use higher derivatives of the solution y as in Obrechkoff methods. We compute their regions of absolute stability and show the three- and four-derivative HBO are A( 𝜶)-stable with 𝜶 > 71 ° and 𝜶 > 78 ° respectively. We conduct numerical tests and show that our new methods are more efficient than several existing well-known methods.

Full text
Abstract:
One-step 3-stage Hermite-Birkhoff-Taylor methods, denoted by HBT( p)3, are constructed for solving nonstiff systems of first-order differential equations of the form y' = f( x, y), y(x0) = y0. The method uses derivatives y' to y(p--2) as in Taylor methods and is combined with a 3-stage Runge-Kutta method of order 3. Forcing a Taylor expansion of the numerical solution to agree with an expansion of the true solution leads to Taylor- and Runge-Kutta-type order conditions, which are then reorganized into Vandermonde-type linear systems whose solutions are the coefficients of the method. The new method yields impressive results with regards to intervals of absolute stability. A detailed formulation of variable step size (VS) fixed order HBT( p)3 is presented, as well as the formulation of variable-step variable-order (VSVO) HBT(p)3. Several problems often used to test high order ODE solvers on the basis the number of steps, CPU time, maximum global error, and maximum global energy error are considered. The results stress that both VS and VSVO HBT(p)3 methods are superior to Dormand-Prince DP (8,7)13M and Taylor method of order p, denoted by T( p). To obtain results at high precision, high order VS and VSVO HBT( p)3 methods have been implemented in multiple precision. These numerical results clearly show the benefit of formulating a method by adding high order derivatives to Runge-Kutta method.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a static analysis of functionally graded single and sandwich beams by using an efficient 7DOFs quasi-3D hybrid type theory. The governing equations are derived by employing the principle of virtual works in a weak form and solved by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM). A C1 cubic Hermite interpolation is used for the vertical deflection variables while C0 linear interpolation is employed for the other kinematics variables. Convergence rates are studied in order to validate the finite element technique. Numerical results of the present formulation are compared with analytical and FEM solutions available in the literature.
Revisión por pares

Abstract:
This thesis develops an immersed finite element (IFE) space for numerical simulations arising from beam design with multiple materials. This IFE space is based upon meshes that can be independent of interface of the materials used to form a beam. Both the forward and inverse problems associated with the beam equation are considered. The order of accuracy of this IFE space is numerically investigated from the point of view of both the interpolation and finite element solution of the interface boundary value problems. Both single and multiple interfaces are considered in our numerical simulation. The results demonstrate that this IFE space has the optimal order of approximation capability.
Master of Science

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to interpret and develop a proposal for valuing heritage according to a broad urban perspective, in order to articulate the peripheral heritage system with the dense nucleus of Beja city. The urban expansion motivated transformations in the territory that gave rise to areas of urban discontinuity, strongly favored by industrial development and road infrastructures. It is intendent to consider heritage as a important resource for the development of the urban periphery and its articulation with the downtown area, as well as to understand the impact of the intervention on the local community. It is intendent to analyze the physical, patrimonial and historical characteristics of the local, in order to collect a data base that constitute the intervention framework area, which will serve as a basis for the project development. The proposal is divided in two intervention levels: a global strategy consisting in the design of a cycle route that articulate the city center with the periphery and the heritage between them, designed by the group work in the discipline Atelier de Projeto II - A; and in the study object, the S. Pedro hermitage. The proposal includes the heritage preservation theme in the urban intervention context, based on the hermitage buildings near by the peripheral limits, close to the main access roads, and community facilities. It is hoped that the patrimony activation will benefit the community and the quality of public space, namely in the S. Pedro hermitage, through the re-characterization of the surrounding areas and sports equipment in the social neighbourhood of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.The project options were based on the study cases that reveal program and scale principles associated to the problematized topics. There are presented two works designed by Vítor Figueiredo architect, the pólo da mitra da Universidade de Évora and the Nossa Senhora do Outeiro church in Albergaria dos Fusos village, as well as La Balastera football stadium in Palencia, designed by Francisco Mangado architect. The main purpose of this essay is to reflect on the transformation potential in a deprived urban periphery through an intervention in the heritage and on the community infrastructures such as the football stadium, in order to contribute to the process of protecting monuments and improving the quality life in the community.
