Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the appearance of garden pavilions and Russian palace chambers also known as "hermitages." The tradition of building hermitages as special-purpose premises, adopted in Russia in the early eighteenth century, had acquired during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna a meaningful national character and scope. Hereby, this tradition may be considered as one of the major cultural phenomena of that time. At the same time, Russian hermitages were significantly different in their function from the British and continental European hermitages. Their main function throughout the eighteenth century remained that of a private, isolated dining room equipped with a special table volante mechanism that allowed those who had gathered to eat without servants. The article therefore also pays attention to the role of mechanical tables and mechanical amusement machines in the baroque court culture. It also compares the design of Elizabeth Petrovna's dining hermitage in Tsarskoye Selo with European architectural treatises. The reader is also acquainted with the reasons for the development of such functional and iconographic features of Russian hermitage architecture, which occupies a special place in the vast and varied European tradition of hermitage construction.

Abstract:
An increasing amount of investigations and publications in the sphere of the history of the Soviet underground art signifies the expanded interest to this problem. However the history of the Amateur creative associations in the soviet underground has not received all the attention it deserves yet. The analysis of the Amateur creative associations could deepen our understanding of the soviet art process. Thereby the overall goal of this paper is to analyze the history of the Amateur Association "Hermitage", which was created by L. A. Bazhanov in 1986. To provide greater depth of knowledge about the “Hermitage’s” history the great amount of archival sources will be engaged. Among these sources are materials from Tsalim, Tsaopim, the Hermitage archive Fund, which is stored in THE NCCA, and the Fund of the collector Leonid Talochkin. The Hermitage was one of the first Amateur creative associations that received an official status. During its short existence, members of the Hermitage have held ten large-scale exhibitions in the exhibition hall in Belyaevo. “Retrospec-tion” was considered to be the most provocative “Hermitage’s” exhibition. Cu-rators arranged the exposition according to their vision of Soviet post war art. This exhibition made the Department of culture of the MGK raise the issue of the lack of ideological and methodological control over all Amateur societies. The political authorities made a decision to dissolve “Hermitage”. The “Her-mitage” administration made unsuccessful attempts to formalize its activity un-der the patronage of other organizations (the Union of cinematographers, ZNUI). Finally Hermitage was renamed to Center for Art Culture but in a year its administration run out of money and had to eliminate the organization. It appears from conducted research that the party leadership tried to make rela-tionship with Amateur organization but they were unable to accept the new concept of the Museum and exhibition hall, which was promoted by the participants of the "Hermitage". Moreover the revision of the official Soviet art history during Perestroika stepped out of line.

Abstract:
Summary This article explores the overlooked role of museums in the international arena as playing a dual role in cultural diplomacy. It explores the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to illustrate an emerging ‘hybrid’ form of diplomacy that cannot be strictly defined as ‘state’ or ‘non-state’. Although the article documents strong ties between the Hermitage Museum and the Russian government, it also reveals the Hermitage’s growing capacity to build productive bilateral cultural relationships with foreign partners, bypassing governmental control. Specifically, the article looks at the international network of Hermitage Foundations as a successful museum international outreach and fundraising campaign that significantly contributes to the Russian government’s efforts in cultural diplomacy. This case offers new empirical findings from the non-Western context, exposing the growing role of museums in contemporary diplomacy.

Abstract:
During the 2016 season in Naqlun, dedicated to an array of specialist studies of material in the storeroom, the team documented one of the hermitages located in the hills west of the monastic compound. The work was necessitated by evident illicit digging which had partly destroyed the compound. The hermitage, which occupied a small valley, appears to have comprised at least three living units, furnished with rock-cut storage pits in the floor and niches in the walls. The doorways and niches bore traces of architectural rendering. The complex may be interpreted tentatively as a residential and religious complex, and it is a good example of a mid-5th century hermitage, the dating confirmed by a study of the pottery assemblage coming from it.

Abstract:
The article discusses the features of the artistic embodiment of the image of Opta’s Hermitage Monastery in the essay “K.G.A. Sederholm, Father Clement, hieromonk of Opta's Hermitage” by Konstantin Leontiev. It is shown that the image of Opta’s Hermitage, created in Konstantin Leontiev’s essay, is multifaceted. Its structure includes a description of the monastery and the nature surrounding it, as well as images of monks that form the artistic anthropology of the work. The image of Father Clement is necessary to mention. The article notes that the author's attitude to Opta’s Hermitage, his belief in the monastery’s exceptional spiritual role for the Orthodox world is artistically embodied, in particular, in the lexical content of the essay. In addition, the work compares the artistic embodiment of the image of Optina Hermitage in Konstantin Leontiev’s essay and in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment. It allows us to conclude that Fyodor Dostoevsky, endowing the image of Opta’s Hermitage with a sacred meaning, deprives it of the picturesqueness and poetry present in Konstantin Leontiev’s essay. The article concludes that Konstantin Leontiev’s essay to a certain extent approaches the essay genre. It is of special, syncretic nature and is of value not only in terms of ideological and philosophical content, but also as an original work of art reflecting the aesthetic views of the writer, his religious quest and philosophical views. The image of Opta’s Hermitage created by Konstantin Leontiev can be included in a number of key topoi that determine the self-awareness of Russian literature.

Abstract:
Pythion is a settlement of the municipality of Olympus in the regional unit of Larissa. It is located on the southwest side of Mount Olympus, in an amphitheatre position at an altitude of about 725 meters. The word Pythion probably comes from the god Pythian Apollon of Greek mythology. Its oldest name was Selos. The village remains important during the Byzantine period, a fact that is proven by the PostByzantine Hermitages that survive there. These were practised by monks who later manned the monasteries of the area. The best-preserved hermitages are located on the hillside, where the hermitage of the Ascension at the foot and the Holy Cross is a little higher. The hermitage of the Ascension extends into a spacious cave and includes five irregular spaces. The first two rooms are almost outdoors and served as vestibules of the nave. The access to the temple is made through an arched gate. The chapel consists of a chamber whose side walls have two arched openings that communicate with the interior of the cave. The only murals that have survived are of the archangels Michael and Gabriel which are found in the interior of the gate that leads to the temple and dates back to the 14th century (Gialouri et al., 2014). The present research study focuses on the analysis of 14th-century mural pigments using spectroscopic non-destructive techniques pXRF and portable Raman.

Abstract:
Initially, the community's perception of the Al-Qura'an tahfidz program at the Ibnu Rusydi Padepokan was indifferent, because the history of the establishment of the hermitage began with a prayer room which was used as a place to rest to simply unwind, moreover the leader or caretaker of the mosque was a former thug, he was not sure that it will become a hermitage that has a tahfidz Al-Qura'an program, therefore the public's perception is negative, but in the end the public's perception of the Ibnu Rusydi hermitage is good when many students stay, there are congregational prayer activities and reciting the Koran . The positive response from the community increased when Abah Agus Ma'arif (caretaker) was very painstaking and patient in guiding, leading students who had mental damage and mental shock, such as; former thugs, ex-convicts, drug addicts, street children, hopeless, distortions, he uses a persuasive approach based on the Koran. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach, with a case study design with data collection techniques through interviews, observation and documentation. Furthermore, data analysis was carried out using descriptive qualitative analysis methods. The research results found that; the public's perception of the Al-Qur'an tahfidz program is very good as evidenced by responses and encouragement both directly and indirectly, because the program is considered the strongest fortress to protect life. Globalization and modernization are considered as challenges that can damage the morality of national and religious life, the stronger the positive response of the community when Abah Agus Maarif (caretaker) embraces, guides, students who have mental retardation, mental shock, thirst for religious values ? by using an Al-based approach -Quran. Community participation in the Al-Qur'an tahfidz program at the Ibnu Rusydi Cukir Diwek Jombang hermitage is evidenced by the presence of residents at the hermitage starting to just chat, talk about the development of the hermitage, even entrusting their son to study/stay at the hermitage. Abstract:
This is a study of a copy of A Book about Faith (Kniga o vere), which was published in Moscow in 1648. The book was found in Vyatka in 2019 during an archaeographic expedition organized by the Repository of Ancient Manuscripts (Drevlekhranilishche) of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskii Dom) in St. Petersburg. According to a note in the book, this copy was donated to the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage in 1659. This copy of A Book about Faith represents one of the few pieces of evidence for the early period of Saint Ignatii Lomskii’s veneration. This study shows that the book was donated when the hermitage was under the rule of Steward Grigorii (Ivan Neronov) and that its donor was Feoktist, the former hegumen of the Moscow Zlatoust Monastery. The note represents Feoktist’s autograph. The note is examined in the context of his biography and literary activities. A detailed examination of this note also reveals new materials concerning the history of the Spaso-Lomskaia Hermitage. One of the findings is that one book that represented a gift by Tsarina Maria Ilinichna, which is now housed in the collection of M. I. Chuvanov in the Russian State Library in Moscow, once belonged to the library of the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage.

Abstract:
Restoration is one of the most important areas in preserving the world’s cultural heritage. Th e 19th century is a landmark in the history of restoration. At that time, it turned from a private practice of self-taught artists into a real scientifi cally based discipline. Many European countries have faced the problems of cultural heritage preservation, and everywhere they were solved in diff erent ways, depending on local peculiarities and experience. Th is article deals with previously unknown facts from the life and activity of the fi rst Russian restorer Andrei Filippovich Mitrokhin, who was born and studied painting in the town of Toropets. He served as a simple soldier, then on duty he ended up in Saint Petersburg, where he was soon granted a valet at the Hermitage. His career developed under Franz Ivanovich Labensky, who assumed the position of chief curator of paintings in the Hermitage Gallery in 1797. Mitrokhin’s role in the history of Russian restoration and, in particular, the Hermitage cannot be overestimated. He not only restored paintings and trained several apprentices, but also worked independently on the development of new methods of restoring paintings. By mastering new techniques and methods of mechanical restoration, Mitrokhin and his students managed to preserve more than a thousand paintings from the Hermitage collection, many of which are painting masterpieces. Unfortunately, some aspects of Mitrokhin’s biography, especially his life outside the Hermitage, have long been overlooked by scholars. This paper examines the problem of his alleged date of birth, family and friendship ties, etc. Th e archival data cited by the author allow us to take a fresh look at Mitrokhin as a restorer, and also shed light on some socio-cultural aspects of his time.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the Harivamśa 79 [HV], the Visnu-Purāna 5.21 [ViP], the Brahma-Purāna 86 [BrP], and the Bhāgavata-Purāna 10.45 [BhP], immediately after the young Krsna kills Kamsa, Krsna's initiation at Sāndīpani's hermitage takes place. To date, this strange episode has not been studied in its own right. Occasionally mentioned in scholarly works, no attempt has been made to understand the importance or significance of this event within the Krsna tradition. This paper begins with a summary of HV 79, and then moves on to examine the character of Sāndīpani, his connection with Garga/Gārgya, the initiation process and the underlying father/son relationships, as well as variations on these themes. The episode provides a narrative link between Samkarsana and Krsna's childhood and the rest of the story which deals with their adult life as ksatriyas, and as such, helps to clarify the overall structure of the HV. Emphasizing Sāndīpani's role as a guru, this paper uncovers, little by little, his connections with (1) the whole trimūrti comprised of Brahmā, Visnu and Śiva-Rudra, (2) the sacrificial logic which involves one who sacrifices, a deity and an officiant, and (3) the variations on the theme of filiation implied in the narration.

Abstract:
De visu investigation of P. Hermitage 1115, which bears the only copy of the Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor, gives new information on the history of this papyrus. It is a palimpsest, with some sheets glued together after the original text had been washed off, which can presumably be explained by the necessity to cut away damaged areas. A narrow papyrus strip is preserved, which is glued along the right (initial) edge of P. Hermitage 1115, and which partly overlaps one of the signs in col. 1. To the author's mind it is the only remnant of a lost previous sheet which must have contained the beginning of the Shipwrecked Sailor. Thus, the only known manuscript of the Shipwrecked Sailor is incomplete, and the introduction of the tale is lost. This reconstruction of the history of P. Hermitage 1115 is not beyond debate, but it may be of service for future interpretations of the Shipwrecked Sailor.

Abstract:
This study aims to explain the history and process of inheriting mask puppet art in two representative hermitages (padepokan) (in Malang, namely Padepokan Asmoro Bangun in Pakisaji sub-district and Mangun Dharma in Tumpang sub-district). This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are done through interviews, observation, and study documents. The process of inheritance includes art practices such as dancing, puppeteering, playing musical instruments, and making masks and transferring knowledge about Wayang Topeng Malangan. Inheritance is generally done since offsprings (children/grandchildren) are still at an early age. The history of the inheritance of the traditional mask puppet art in Padepokan Asmoro Bangun has occurred for six generations of this family since before 1930 starting from the Serun period. The sixth Padepokan Asmoro Bangun Heirs are two daughters named Winnie Padnecwara (15 years old) and Dita Andhika Raja Padmi (12 years old) who learned this art since the age of four. Padepokan Mangun Dharma is the home of mask puppet art, as well as music, traditional dance, and theatre, macapat, puppetry, and shadow puppets. The history of the inheritance of this hermitage began with the great-grandfather of the puppeteer Soleh namely Kek Sainten (Grandpa Sainten). The current heir of Padepokan Mangun Dharma is the son of the puppeteer Soleh, Supriyono Hadi Prasetyo, who also learned puppetry both autodidact and formally through college. Although inheritance occurs vertically, which is hereditary in each hermitage, horizontal inheritance also occurs between the two. This indicates that the inheritance process of Padepokan Asmoro Bangun and Mangun Dharma are related to each other.

<em>Aashram was a place where hermits lived in seclusion from the rest of the world for religious purposes. Originally hermitages were natural caves, a hut in the forest or temple ruins.</em> <em>Generally, these are situated in beautiful natural spots with many flora and fauna. Hermitage in ancient India is supposed to be a utopia. Kalidasa is considered one of India&rsquo;s greatest writers, dramatists and poets. Abhijnanashakuntalam is one of his finest creations, where he has presented a very lively description of Kanv Aashram. He has given a detailed description of the surroundings of Kanv Aashram in the drama. It is apparent that he was familiar with the location of Kanv Aashram, which is situated in Uttarakhand. The present paper explores how Kalidas has portrayed the ashram in Abhijnanshakuntalam.</em>

Abstract:
In 1926 collection of items that allegedly were founded in a mound near the Sumy city of Kharkov province was transferred to the State Hermitage museum from the storehouse of antiquities of the State Academy for the History of Material Culture. According to the information given in the museums inventory book, this mound was excavated by N. E. Makarenko in 1915. However we couldn’t find any documents confirming this research. Even if the mound near the Sumy city existed, details of its structure as well as circumstances of the items discovery are still unknown. The most of peculiar interest items in the Hermitage collection are numerous iron parts of two Scythian-type wagons. In this article we have proposed the reconstruction of the wheels of these wagons that based in the analysis of the items. For some parts of wagons we have found analogies in the Scythian mounds in the Dnieper and the Kuban areas. At the same time, in the Hermitage collection there are Sindo-Meotian type swords and Meotian pottery of the IV century BC. Considering this fact, we have reviewed an alternative version of the origin of wagons parts. Some indirect signs allow us to correlate items from a mound near the Sumy city with the famous Elizabethan burial mounds. This fact is confirmed also by the comparison items from Hermitage collection with archive documents of excavations of the Elizabethan burial ground, in particular, with the photo of the wheels that were founded in the mound, excavated in 1915.

Abstract. The paper presents an experiment having the objective of verifying the use of low-cost sensors such as solid-state Lidar embedded in a smartphone for cave surveying. The case study is a micaelic hermitage in Montesano sulla Marcellana (Italy) and is part of a research that deals with the analysis and digitization of rupestrian architecture, especially, hermitages dedicated to the cult of St. Michael present in Campania (Italy). In order to evaluate the application potential of Lidar for cave surveying, comparisons were made between the results of different surveying campaigns performed both with traditional speleological techniques and by TLS sensors. The experimentation provides quantitative assessments of the possibility of using these new sensors that would make the acquisition steps even faster. In addition, the outcomes of the survey shed light on previously unknown aspects of the case study.

Abstract. This article shows the application of different geoinformatic approaches for the diagnosis of a small hermitage located at the Spanish capital of Madrid. More specifically Structure from Motion photogrammetry for the 3D digitalization and orthophoto generation, and Geographical Information System (GIS) for uploading and management of the information were used. Both strategies were carried out using open-source software. In the case of the GIS approach the QGIS platform was chosen and some additional features were programmed to facilitate the diagnosis such as the creation of standardized HTML files to improve the interoperability. The pre-diagnosis phase was carried out by means of the Qfield android application that allows capturing the data on field. Additionally, several previous test, i.e. X-ray diffraction, microscopy and physical tests were carried out with the aim of understanding the severe degradation process that this Hermitage is suffering. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to understand the current status and degradation mechanisms of the Hermitage on which the most prominent damages are the features induced by material loss. This damage is related with the environmental conditions of the sites as well as the physical and chemical properties of the stone used during its construction.
