Historical workSummaryIt seems that not so long ago that Margarita Urías arrived in Xalapa. Due to institutional circumstances, Margarita very early in her life was in charge of the direction of the Historical Studies Center: in the blink of an eye, she became the leader of a group of students from different academic and geographical origins, proposing new approaches that would reveal new subjects of investigation, close to the commitment with the subordinate classes and where the social movements would occupy privileged spaces, from which seminars, conferences, workshops and academic meetings would be induced. As her work demonstrates, Margarita privileged the search for historical information sources of Veracruz. Many of the historic paths that are currently followed by researchers deserved to be in debate for studying and theoretical workshops that gave meaning to research concerns. Historical schools and historiography formed part of her incessant activity and from her seminars arose inquiries about the Veracruz union movement, movements for the land and the organization of the peasants of the State. Keywords: Research, History, Social movements, Memory, HistotiographyMargarita Urías Hermosillo. Abstract:

Abstract:
This study reports the modeling of the turbulent natural convection in a double air-channel solar chimney (SC-DC) and its comparison with a single air-channel solar chimney (SC-C). Prediction of the mass flow and the thermal behavior of the SC-DC were obtained under three different climates of Mexico during one summer day. The climates correspond to: tropical savannah (Mérida), arid desert (Hermosillo) and temperate with warm summer (Mexico City). A code based on the Finite Volume Method was developed and a [Formula: see text] turbulence model has been used to model air turbulence in the solar chimney (SC). The code was validated against experimental data. The results indicate that during the day the SC-DC extracts about 50% more mass flow than the SC-C. When the SC-DC is located in Mérida, Hermosillo and Mexico City, the air-changes extracted along the day were 60, 63 and 52, respectively. The air temperature at the outlet of the chimney increased up to 33%, 38% and 61% with respect to the temperature it has at the inlet for Mérida, Hermosillo and Mexico City, respectively.

Abstract:
While the suburbanisation process has been well documented in some large cities of several developed countries, much less attention has been devoted to the case of small and middle-sized cities in developing countries. This article focuses on an exploratory spatial data analysis to investigate the location of the central business district (CBD) and other employment centres in Hermosillo, Mexico. The results reveal the significant presence of spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity, although their extent varies with the sector under study. These spatial effects take the form of a persistent cluster of high values of employment around the historical district of the city shaping a huge CBD, although a sub-centre of high values emerges to the south and to the north-west of the CBD in 2004. Overall, Hermosillo is still characterised by a traditional monocentric model, but the role of its CBD has changed.

Abstract:
Women’s involvement in collective struggles for environmental quality has surged in recent years, as has research focusing on this phenomenon. Consistent with this research, a feminist lens is useful in revealing a model of community struggle that features women’s activities and strategies to expose environmental insult. I use a case study of community protest in Hermosillo, a city in the Mexican state of Sonora, to feature social networks as a means of politicizing the placement of a toxic waste dump six kilometers outside the city. A feminist perspective reveals these social networks to be more than a way to mobilize resources. It allow us to see the ways in which gender interacts with globalized relations of power, political ecology, and environmental policy, and to validate a creative way in which women can out-maneuver the gendered constraints to political participation. An analysis of how social networks served in this particular struggle suggests that they are an important component in the process through which women gained voice and authored oppositional discourse in contexts where these have been previously denied, and ultimately deconstructed the political authority that sanctioned the dump.

Abstract:
This research is an exploration of the applicability of a methodology to the study of decision making on migration in Mexican households. This thesis shows the importance of using multiple respondents in order to examine the role of women in decision making within Mexican households that have migrated. Women's roles in the processes of decision making and migration are varied, but individuals in all households studied indicated that migration is a family, rather than individual, decision. Gender differences appeared in responses to many questions, emphasizing men's and women's different priorities. The most striking differences emerged between spouses in the same household, and the results show the inaccurate picture that can develop if one household member is used to represent all members.

Abstract:
In our research we have analysed the poetry of two mexican writers : one belonging to Guadalajara, the other to Mexico City ; this fact gave us the opportunity to stablish relationship between two perspectives of the same period : that of the province and that of the capital. The main factor that links the point of view of the two writers is to express, through their poetry, the ideology dominant prevailing in Mexico after the revolution. We have studied the cultural context through two magazines published in that period : one of Guadalajara, the other of Mexico City. We have, in order to analyse the poems, the postulates of the theory sociocritique created by Edmond Cros according to which it exists a relationship between the structures of the texts (poems) and the social structures from the period studied

"Outdoor spatial spraying against dengue: A false sense of security among inhabitants of Hermosillo, Mexico." PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/624503.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Government-administered adulticiding is frequently conducted in response to dengue transmission worldwide. Anecdotal evidence suggests that spraying may create a "false sense of security' for residents. Our objective was to determine if there was an association between residents' reporting outdoor spatial insecticide spraying as way to prevent dengue transmission and both their reported frequency of dengue prevention practices and household entomological indices in Hermosillo, Mexico. Methodology/Principal findings A non-probabilistic survey of 400 households was conducted in August 2014. An oral questionnaire was administered to an adult resident and the outer premises of the home were inspected for water-holding containers and presence of Ae. aegypti larvae and pupae. Self-reported frequency of prevention practices were assessed among residents who reported outdoor spatial spraying as a strategy to prevent dengue (n = 93) and those who did not (n = 307). Mixed effects negative binomial regression was used to assess associations between resident's reporting spraying as a means to prevent dengue and container indices. Mixed effects logistic regression was used to determine associations with presence/absence of larvae and pupae. Those reporting spatial spraying disposed of trash less frequently and spent less time indoors to avoid mosquitoes. They also used insecticides and larvicides more often and covered their water containers more frequently. Their backyards had more containers positive for Ae. aegypti (RR = 1.92) and there was a higher probability of finding one or more Ae. aegypti pupae (OR = 2.20). Survey respondents that reported spatial spraying prevented dengue were more likely to be older and were exposed to fewer media sources regarding prevention. Conclusions/Significance The results suggest that the perception that outdoor spatial spraying prevents dengue is associated with lower adoption of prevention practices and higher entomological risk. This provides some support to the hypothesis that spraying may lead to a "false sense of security". Further investigations to clarify this relationship should be conducted. Government campaigns should emphasize the difficulty in controlling Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and the need for both government and community action to minimize risk of dengue transmission.

Rodríguez-Gámez, Liz Ileana. "New Perspectives on the Spatial Analysis of Urban Employment Distribution and Commuting Patterns: the Cases of Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregon, Mexico." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/223344.

Abstract:
Whereas no prior contribution has focused on the case of a medium-sized city in a developing country, such as Mexico, to explore how urban structure and its expansion has affected the spatial distribution of employment, three distinct, but related papers were developed, which combine urban economics literature and spatial sciences techniques to fill this gap and provide new evidence. The first paper, entitled "Spatial Distribution of Employment in Hermosillo, 1999 and 2004" identifies where employment subcenters are. Testing the presence of spatial effects, it concludes that an incipient process of employment suburbanization has taken place; however, the city still exhibits a monocentric structure. As a complement, a second paper, "Employment Density in Hermosillo, 1999-2004: A Spatial Econometric Approach of Local Parameters" tests if the Central Business District (CBD), despite suburbanization, maintains the traditional attributes of attracting activities and influencing the organization of employment around it. The CBD is still attractive, but its influence varies across space and economic sector, conclusions that were masked by global estimations. Thirdly, a study was essential to uncover how important is the urban structure and the suburbanization of jobs in explaining the dispersion resulting of households and workplaces (commuting). The paper entitled "Commuting in a Developing City: The Case of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico" examines this issue. To take advantage of the commuting information available, the study area was switched. In general, the results are consistent with those suggested by urban economics; moreover, the inclusion of workplace characteristics was a novelty to model commuting behavior and proves that space matters. Additionally, new evidence was provided to the field of spatial science through the applications of techniques able to expose the spatial effects associated with the distribution of employment, more specifically, the Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis(ESDA), Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) with spatial effects, as well as the generalized multilevel hierarchical linear model (GMHL) were used. The new findings produced for this dissertation provide a more comprehensive understanding of urban dynamics and could help to improve the planning process. It is hoped that this dissertation will contribute to that development as well as stimulate further research.

Abstract:
By 2050, the world's population will have doubled and will be mainly urban. This perspective generates the need to think about the present and the future of cities, especially those located in mid-latitudes, where a large part of that population accumulates. Many of these cities are in regions with hot semi-arid and hot-dry climates. Traditionally, desert cities were designed in compact shapes in response to various climatic factors. Today, these cities have adopted the dispersed city model, driven by car use, the emergence of cooling systems, and a steady decline in energy costs. This form of growth raises a series of problems from an environmental point of view: poor habitability of the public space, long distances, an elevated land use, high demand for cooling. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the energy repercussions of the increase in urban density in dispersed and low-density cities with a hot-dry climate in the northwestern region of Mexico. The city of Hermosillo in Sonora, a medium-sized city in expansion, is taken as a case study. This thesis analyzes the effects of urban densification on three different scales: city, neighborhood, and building. Based on a city-scale cartographic analysis, this thesis shows that Hermosillo presents a dispersed pattern of low-density growth with two main characteristics: low centrality and high fragmentation. The low centrality is due to the loss of population and economic weight of the urban center in favor of the periphery. The urban fragmentation is a result of the existence of a large number of vacant lots (35% of the urban area). Therefore, two urban strategies are identified and could be followed to slow down the growth of the urban area: the infill of vacant lots and the densification of existing fabrics (stacking) for the creation of high-density sub-centers. The historic center of Hermosillo is selected to carry out the analysis on a neighborhood scale. The impact that a densification process of an existing urban fabric has on the habitability of the urban space is assessed. Currently, this fabric has a high pedestrian potential, but low population and building density, and high levels of solar radiation. In this thesis, the study area is rethought through a densification process employing the mixed-use lot and the stacking of houses. It is shown that by following the current regulations is possible to achieve building density values similar to those of urban centers and tissue of cities with compact morphology. Also, by allowing an increase in density allows achieving streets with an aspect ratio of around h/w= 1, a ratio that, at this latitude, permits the creation of "shadow corridors" spaces protected from radiation. Finally, the impact of stacking on energy performance at the building scale is analyzed using dynamic thermal simulations. To this end, this thesis compares the thermal behavior of free-running homes and the energy demand for cooling during the hot season of isolated single-family homes and multi-family homes in height. The conclusion is that the higher the stacking level, the better the thermal and energy performance. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that in homes without refrigeration, the use of solar protection on windows achieves a slightly superior improvement than that of thermal insulation. Therefore, this thesis allows us to demonstrate that an increase in density (building and population) has advantages at different scales, especially in cities with a hot-desert climate. Stacking allows the creation of shade in the public space and, at the same time, an improvement in the internal energy consumption of refrigerated homes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractIn the absence of strong international agreements, many municipal governments are leading efforts to build resilience to climate change in general and to extreme weather events in particular. However, it is notoriously difficult to guide and activate processes of change in complex adaptive systems such as cities. Participatory scenario planning with city professionals and members of civil society provides an opportunity to coproduce positive visions of the future. Yet, not all visions are created equal. In this chapter, we introduce the Resilience, Equity, and Sustainability Qualitative (RESQ) assessment tool that we have applied to compare positive scenario visions for cities in the USA and Latin America. We use the tool to examine the visions of the two desert cities in the UrbanResilience to Extreme Events Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN), which are Hermosillo (Mexico) and Phoenix (United States).

Abstract:
The development of social housing In Mexico during the last decade has been supported by the different levels of government (federal, state, and municipal) in order to assist low-income families. The accelerated construction that takes place in order to address the housing deficit causes a reduction in the quality of design and construction, which is also affected by rising building costs. Environmental comfort conditions inside the dwellings are reduced drastically when houses are constructed without considering climate conditions, especially in hot arid regions. This situation generates uncomfortable thermal conditions for users and high-energy costs due to the unavoidable need of air conditioning. User profiles, architectural program, comfort preferences and guidelines for design and construction of future dwellings in the city of Hermosillo, in northwest Mexico, were determined by surveying beneficiaries of government affordable housing programs. One survey measured the degree of satisfaction of inhabitants in a sample of over 370 households; a second survey sampled 200 households and was aimed at determining aspects of comfort. This paper describes the results of thermal simulations carried out on two housing models. The first model represents the type usually constructed by commercial developers, and the second is a proposal developed by the research team according to guidelines based on the results of the research project described before. This study is a preliminary step in the construction of a physical model for experimental research and demonstration.

Abstract:
In the framework of the National Laboratory of Solar Concentrating and Solar Chemistry Systems (LACYQS, for its Spanish acronym), a Heliostat Test Field (HTF) was built in México. This research facility is located 10 km away from the city of Hermosillo, in the state of Sonora. The main purpose of the HTF, at the present stage, is to serve as platform for the development and testing of heliostat technology. In order to evaluate the performance of heliostats, various optical tests have been implemented. In the sun tracking test, the heliostat is operated as a solar tracker. A camera is attached to the heliostat, which is pointed directly to the sun. Images are captured throughout the day to quantify the wandering of the solar disc in the image. In the reflected spot test, the image produced on the Lambertian target by the concentrating heliostat, due to the reflection of the sun, is recorded by a CCD camera throughout the day. Image processing algorithms calculate the centroid of energy of the image and evaluate the position and wandering across the white screen at all times. After this information is gathered, and the influence of wind and external factors eliminated, data are interpreted to characterize the behavior of solar projection algorithms and mechanical components. In the fringe projection analysis, also known as deflectometry, fringe patters are projected at night on a Lambertian target. The image of the pattern reflected by the heliostat is recorded with a camera. Distortions in the fringes, due to mirror stress and canting, allows the characterization of the surface error of the facets.

Abstract:
Housing form and city form: Urban morphology and local identityKeywords (3-5): Building type, urban morphology, Valencia, housing, house floor-plan design This paper aims to analyse the processes of typological evolution of residential buildings in Valencia as a way to outline an 'affiliation' within the city's housing types, capable of endowing a local identity profile beyond European influences that began to generalise from mid-XIX century. The residential fabric of Valencia maintained a certain continuity/ intelligibility in its morphological evolution until the 1970s, in which the development of the 1966 PG marked a turning point, with the progressive incorporation of "modern" forms of housing, vaguely related to the diffusion of CIAM architectural principles. Nevertheless, a most substantial part of the city fabric, amounting to two-thirds of all residential buildings, was built before the 1966 PG, and therefore away from 'modern' housing practices. Most of this fabric, corresponding to neighbourhoods resulting from urban extension projects starting in the second half of the nineteenth century, is made out of serially-aggregated, multi-family buildings or 'houses of flats', forming perimeter blocks, whose profile still characterises visually the city's townscape. To a large extent, these 'houses of flats' are the result of a progressive codification of building prototypes that first appeared in the historic city, originating from the transformation of the traditional city-house. Initially, the transformation began with increasing the number of storeys, successively followed with processes of plot-aggregation, all combined with an horizontal division configuring new housing floor-plans. These processes progressively generated larger buildings, in which the plot shape and dimensions appear as determining instances. References (100 Word) ALONSO DE ARMIÑO, L. y PIÑON, J.L. (1986).
