Abstract:
Eight mandarin cultivars have been analyzed for their content of vitamin C, minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn), CIELab color coordinates (L*, a*, b*, C*, and h ab), total volatile compounds content and sensory aroma intensity of juice. Experimental results proved that no important enough differences were found in the minerals contents to decide which mandarin cultivar was of higher quality. Clemenules provided the darkest juice with the highest vitamin C content and with the most intense mandarin aroma. On the other hand, Nova and Hernandina mandarin could be considered as the worst cultivars for juice production. Finally if Clemenules mandarins were not available for juice processing, Orogrande, Clemenpons, Ellendale, and Marisol could also be good options.

Abstract:
Abstract A rapid gas chromatographic method for determining fenpropimorph residues in citrus fruit is reported. The fungicide is extracted with hexane after pH adjustment of the fruit homogenate. A short liquidliquid partitioning process is performed before gas chromatography on an OV-17 column with nitrogen-phosphorus specific detection. The limit of detection of the method was 0.01 mg/kg, based on a 25 g sample. Recovery was always higher than 70%. Fenpropimorph residues in "Washington Navel" oranges and "Hernandina" Clementine fruits dipped in a 1500 mg/L fungicide solution were determined. The fungicide remains mainly in the peel, with levels less than 0.1 mg/kg in the pulp. Fungicide residues in the peel decrease during storage, mainly in Washington Navel peel, where values decreased from 5.2 to 2.8 mg/kg.

Abstract:
Fresh juices from mandarin varieties, from hybrids, and from blends of these raw materials were evaluated by 100 consumers to determine acceptability, and by 10 trained panelists to quantify sensory attributes. Trained panelists found the juice from Clemenules richer in both mandarin and fresh flavor (odor and taste) whereas Nova juice presented minimum scores for these attributes. These aspects obviously affected the evaluation of acceptability by consumers, who preferred the juice from Clemenules (a Clementine variety) either alone or blended in major proportions with less preferred varieties such as Marisol, Hernandina (Clementines), Ortanique or Nova (hybrids). Nova juice was rejected by most consumers, but accepted by a small group of them. These results are of great importance for the European citrus industry since Clemenules is the most abundant variety and will constitute the main source of raw material for processing plants.

Abstract:
A survey was conducted from April to June 2002 in 62 orchards of clementine mandarin grafted on Troyer or Carrizo citrange rootstock in Catalonia (northeastern Spain) to determine the relationship between physicochemical soil properties and Tylenchulus semipenetrans population densities. Soil was analyzed to determine texture, pH, electric conductivity, organic matter content, N, P, K, Mg, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxide. Also, trials were conducted in 2003 and 2004 in three drip-irrigated orchards of clementine mandarin cv. Clemenules (El Pla and Mariclaire) or cv. Hernandina (Martorella) to determine the relationship between citrus nematode densities and yield of mandarin. T. semipenetrans was detected in 77% of the surveyed orchards. The number of second-stage juveniles + males in soil was related to N and K soil content (3.57953 – 0.001305 N + 0.00113 K, R2 = 0.1620, P < 0.0157). The relationship between relative yield of clementine mandarin cv. Clemenules and densities of females per gram of root in spring was described by the Seinhorst damage function model (0.035 + 0.965 (0.9995)(Pi – 287), R2 = 0.4782, P < 0.0001).

Abstract:

Abstract:
A new aporphine, 3-hydroxyhernandonine (1) and a new lignin, 4′-O-demethyl-7-O-methyldehydropodophyllotoxin (2), have been isolated from the root wood of Hernanadia nymphaeifolia, together with thirteen known compounds (3–15). The structures of these compounds were determined through mass spectrometry (MS) and spectroscopic analyses. The known isolate, 2-O-methyl-7-oxolaetine (3), was first isolated from natural sources. Among the isolated compounds, 3-hydroxyhernandonine (1), 4′-O-demethyl-7-O-methyldehydropodophyllotoxin (2), hernandonine (4), oxohernangerine (5), and oxohernagine (6) displayed inhibition (IC50 values ≤5.72 μg/mL) of superoxide anion production by human neutrophils in response to formyl-l-methionyl-l-leucyl-l-phenylalanine/cytochalasin B (fMLP/CB). In addition, 3-hydroxyhernandonine (1), 4′-O-demethyl-7-O-methyldehydropodophyllotoxin (2), oxohernangerine (5), and oxohernagine (6) suppressed fMLP/CB-induced elastase release with IC50 values ≤5.40 μg/mL.

Abstract:
and Abstract The Island of Rotuma is facing widespread destruction and degradation of its flora. This investigation was conducted to determine the pollen fertility status in thirty two species of economic and environmentally important coastal species, which are reproducing freely thus most suitable to rehabilitate coastal areas. Pollen fertility status in these species varied from as low as 38% in Canavalia cathertica to as high as 100% in Hernandia nymphaeifolia and Vigna marina. It was interesting to note that species within same genus showed wide range of pollen viability. However, most of the species investigated had high pollen viability especially in those species, which grow close to sea. It was recorded that pollen fertility was low in small fragmented populations. This showed the effect of population size on reproduction. Larger sized populations showed high percentage of pollen fertility.

Abstract:
Friedrich Welwitsch (1806–1872) is best known for his botanical work in Angola in south-tropical Africa. However, he also was one of the first plant collectors on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, Gulf of Guinea, while en route to Angola in 1853, and again seven years later when returning to Lisbon, Portugal. The contributions of Welwitsch to the floristics of these two islands are discussed. Reference is also made to the other mid-19th century botanical collectors who were active in São Tomé and Príncipe. The typification of the names Ehretia scrobiculata, Hernandia beninensis, and Leea tinctoria, which are all based on Welwitsch specimens, is clarified. Two endemics of the Gulf of Guinea islands have names coined by Welwitsch. Their nomenclature is clarified, and the names are here second-step lectotypified. We show that authorship of the name Leea tinctoria should be attributed to Welwitsch, not to ‘Lindley ex Baker’.

Seven new butanolides, peltanolides A–G (1–7), and two lignan glucosides, peltasides A (8) and B (9), along with eleven known compounds, 10–20, were isolated from a crude CH3OH/CH2Cl2 (1:1) extract of the fruit of Hernandia nymphaeifolia (Hernandiaceae). The structures of 1–9 were characterized by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic and HRMS analysis. The absolute configurations of newly isolated compounds 1–9 were determined from data obtained by optical rotation and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) exciton chirality methods. Butanolides and lignan glucosides have not been isolated previously from this genus. Several isolated compounds were evaluated for antiproliferative activity against human tumor cell lines. Lignans 15 and 16 were slightly active against chemosensitive tumor cell lines A549 and MCF-7, respectively. Furthermore, both compounds displayed significant activity (IC50 = 5 µM) against a P-glycoprotein overexpressing multidrug-resistant tumor cell line (KB-VIN) but were less active against its parent chemosensitive cell line (KB).

Abstract:
Doxorubicin (DOX) is an effective anti-tumor drug widely used in clinics. Hernandezine (HER), isolated from a Chinese medicinal herb, has a selective inhibitory effect on DOX multidrug resistance, making DOX more effective in treating cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the interaction of HER and DOX on pharmacokinetics. Male Sparague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: a single DOX group, a single HER group, and a combination group. Plasma concentrations of DOX and HER were determined by the LC-MS/MS method at specified time points after administration, and the main pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated. The results showed that there were significant differences in the Cmax and AUC0–∞ of DOX in the single drug group and combined drug group, indicating that HER could improve the absorption of DOX. However, DOX in combination, in turn, reduced the free drug concentration of HER, possibly because DOX enhanced the HER drug–protein binding effect. The results could be used as clinical guidance for DOX and HER to avoid adverse reactions.

In the present article, we show that exogenously applied or endogenously generated S1P (in a sphingosine kinase-dependent manner) results in significant increases in phosphorylation of ERM proteins as well as filopodia formation. Using phosphomimetic and non-phosphorylatable ezrin mutants, we show that the S1P-induced cytoskeletal protrusions are dependent on ERM phosphorylation. Employing various pharmacological S1PR (S1P receptor) agonists and antagonists, along with siRNA (small interfering RNA) techniques and genetic knockout approaches, we identify the S1PR2 as the specific and necessary receptor to induce phosphorylation of ERM proteins and subsequent filopodia formation. Taken together, the results demonstrate a novel mechanism by which S1P regulates cellular architecture that requires S1PR2 and subsequent phosphorylation of ERM proteins.

Abstract:
