Abstract:
My ongoing series of assemblages are an expression my modern mythology through the juxtaposition of esoteric symbols and my collection of beloved action figures. Though myth is founded in partial truths and allegories, it has the unique capability to speak about our relationships to one another and the universe. My artwork conceives of anime, comics, and videos games as part of our contemporary mythology. Inspired by a fusion of pop culture and spirituality, I also draw on the magical properties attributed to flowers, gemstones and other materials to create shrines, altars, and other objects. Juxtaposing these properties, found in my research of esotericism and mythology, with action figures establishes symbolic connections that act as an interface to the spiritual symbolism explored in each piece. The collision of masking tape, shoe polish, flowers; gemstones and repurposed objects result in re-contextualizations of characters from popular culture. My practice suggests new possibilities for cultural symbolism reflective of my own unique experiences and values and as an active expression of creative freedom in our experiences of the divine. My assemblages re-examine traditional categorizations in art and culture, such as sacred and profane and high and low, while attempting to demystify the veil that separates the experiential from the transcendent.

Abstract:
There is a dearth of Black male education success stories and a lack of documenting by some pastoral practitioners of their model of pastoral care. The absence of both my story and model was due to traumatic memories. As a Black male pastor and educator, seen as a role model, working to inspire Black young males disaffected in their education, the absence blocked my practice advancement. Therefore, I used this problem for a self-reflective study on my practice to put my record straight. First I revisited a snapshot of my educational past and contemporary practice using a Black metaphorical redemptive lens to see my study as a Black hero’s journey. Second, I imagined myself through a Johari Awareness Model in reflective conversation with myself, Jesus Christ, and others. Third, I located my work within a practical theological paradigm and used autoethnographic methodological approach and methods to gather and analyse my data. Finally, I subjected my findings to a discussion interpreted through my conceptual lens to see what would emerge. Hidden insights underpinning my practice were surfaced providing me with a new view of my life and way of being in my practice. Captured in the form of my autoethnography, this serves as a new Black cultural symbolic resource. This gives documented access to my education success story. It also models my pastoral practice which now enables me to share with others, through symbolic modelling, the current best knowledge and practices underpinning my work. My study is an innovative use of inner experiences for Black professional advancement from blocked traumatic memories. It provides a new model within the field of practical theology, by which others might see a theology by heart beyond the usage of text for professional development. My inquiry makes me more transparent and a better role model for student and colleagues.

Abstract:
This study explores the archetypes, motifs, and stages of the Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey as they are found in the Moldvay revision of the rules to Basic Dungeons & Dragons, that emerge from playing the game using the seven adventure modules printed for these rules. Using narratological concepts, the definition of what makes narrative is expanded to include the narrative that emerges by playing story-based roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. These narratives, based on the seven adventure modules, are the analyzed using Campbell's monomyth as an interpretive tool, showing that these types of narratives are up to similar academic scrutiny as other forms of narrative. Such scrutiny shows that the types of narrative that emerge from playing a tabletop roleplaying game like Dungeons & Dragons need an expansion of the models for narrative analysis. This expansion presents a myriad of opportunities for future study.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigated the lived experience of transformation of participants in an earth-based Hero’s Journey Program and how a transformation manifests in participants’ daily lives. Three conceptual frameworks were investigated: Transformative Learning Theory, Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, and Scharmer’s U Theory. This study utilized a triangulation of multiple forms of qualitative inquiry including researcher experience in conjunction with data collected and analyzed in 3 phases that informed and validated each other. A total of 36 participants (N = 36) were involved in this study; participants included myself, facilitators, and journeyers. Phase 1 was a focus group (n = 5). Phase 2 was an interpretive phenomenological analysis of interviews (n = 16); and Phase 3 was an exploratory survey (n = 15). Phase 2 and Phase 3 ran concurrently after the completion of Phase 1. Two participants were involved in more than 1 phase of the study; therefore, the total number of participants is less than the combined number of participants listed for each of the 3 phases. Research found full-embodied spiritual journeys in a time concentrated mythological orientation steeped in nature’s elements foster human development and leadership capacities. Transformative process emerged six themes: (a) deep longing for clarity, likeminded community, connection to nature; (b) embracing the unknown, rituals create symbolic connections to soul, spirit and a sense of not being alone. Ritualized intentions embodied within nature create a catalyst for transformation; (c) willingness to tolerate discomfort reveals five interconnections: presencing, overcoming fear, trusting, surrendering and mutual support. Crossing thresholds evokes increased energy, a felt sense of spaciousness, reclaimed parts of self and an energetic unity of being (feminine) and doing (masculine). Reflective dialogue significantly enhance a transformation; (d) transformation shifts relationships with self, others, nature and time; (e) facilitators’ provide safety, unconditional acceptance, compassionate inquiry and profound sense of presence; and (f) an interwoven leadership atmosphere augments individual development and leadership capacities.

Abstract:
Little is known about the importance of courage in serious mental illness. The purpose of this study was to discover whether courage was a significant variable in clients struggling with mental illness. The phenomelological approach and research method was used and the question was asked: What is the essential structure of the lived experience of courage in serious mental illness. Five seriously mentally ill adults participated in an open ended, recorded interview, recounting their experience of courage. Phenomenological analysis was used to derive 69 theme clusters and 13 categories. An essential structure of courage was drawn from the clusters and categories. The 13 categories fell so naturally into the stages of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey that the stages were incorporated into category headings. In this study courage played a significant role in the ability of the participants to live successfully with serious mental illness.

Darbe, remiantis C. G. Jungo kolektyvinės pasąmonės modeliu, nagrinėjamas Joseph‘o Campbell‘o susistematizuotas „Didvyrio mitas“. Nepriklausomai nuo kultūros ir geografinės padėties, universalia forma visame pasaulyje aptinkamas klasikinis mitinės herojaus kelionės šablonas naudojamas ne tik literatūroje, tačiau ir vaizduojamajame mene, besiremiančiame pasakojimu – tame tarpe ir vienoje naujausių medijų meno šakų – vaizdo žaidimuose. Darbe tiriamos universalaus „Didvyrio mito“ interpretacijos vaizdo žaidimuose ir šios medijos įtakoti nukrypimai nuo klasikinio mito modelio.
The theme of this work is „Hero‘s Journey‘s representation in video games“. In this work, based on C. G. Jung‘s concept of collective subconsciousness, the content of „Hero‘s Journey“(as systemized by Joseph Campbell) is analyzed. The concept of universal myth is found not only in the literature, but also in most of the visual art which is based on narrative element, including video games. The work analyzes the interpretation of „Hero‘s Journey“ in video games and identifies the variations of the template of the universal myth as it occurs in this video game medium.

This research aims to test a strategy to expand the literary repertoire of students of the 7th grade of Elementary School in a public school in Juiz de Fora: the creation of a community of readers in the classroom through shared reading of a reference work for students - in this case the Bible, more specifically narratives related to the heroes Moses and Jesus - using as a key reading the Hero's Journey, which will establish an intertextual relationship between the already known work and a network of new works belonging to systems different from the literary polysystem. The hypothesisis that reading the stories of the biblical heroes Moses and Jesus will allow students to expand their repertoire by appropriating literary strategies mobilized by the Hero's Journey, both in these stories and in the stories of the Greek heroes and the Celtic hero King Arthur . In addition, it is intended to check if it is possible to promote a newly acquired repertoire activation in a reading of parts of the contemporary Harry Potter series that takes in to account the intense intertextual dialogue it maintains with traditional narratives. The theoretical assumptions underlying this research were: literary repertoire (Iser, 1996), community of readers (Chartier, 1994), Hero's Journey (Campbell, 1997) and literary polysystem (Zohar, 2013). In addition, the shared reading strategy was adopted (Colomer, 2007). The methodology use disaction research and the instruments of data collection are diagnostic questionnaires, teacher's field diary and student reading diary. From the shared reading of the works mentioned above, we were able to build a community of readers from the Bible to other intertextually related works. The students were able to establish relationships between the stories read with reference to the Hero's Journey elaborated by Campbell.

In the face of the media's attribution to sports idols, giving them mythological aspects that transform them into heroes, courageous enough figures to enter the world of adventure, overcome challenges and win gifts in favor of society, the present study aims to analyze the narratives present in the documentaries "Garrincha, hero of the Jungle" (1963, directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade) and "This is Pelé" (1974, directed by Luiz Carlos Barreto and Eduardo Escorel). More specifically, it intends to compare the trajectories of the soccer players Garrincha and Pelé, portrayed in the mentioned works, and the structure of the Hero’s Journey of Joseph Campbell, one of the most renowned scholars of universal mythology. The proposed reflections aim to analyze the possibility of framing the athlete within the scope of the myth, which is verified by the verification of the protagonists' passage through the nucleus Separation-Initiation-Return of the monomyth, standard route of the mythological adventure of the hero, a predestined figure to overcome challenges and to perform great deeds.

Abstract:
The idea of circularity, of unity and cyclical renewal is a frequent theme in the works of Caio Fernando Abreu and sets up a narrative structure with the same pattern. This structure, which reproduces the cycle of life, is reflected in fictional texts narrating the story of a character-protagonist, since the transition from childhood to adolescence and until maturity. This work proposes that the set of the writer's fictional work can be read as a narrative unity which plot is the trajectory of a character in the formation of his individuality, his conscience and his literary vocation. By focusing on the individual, their experiences, encounters and disagreements, dramas and joys, he composes a human emotional radiography of his time in a period of nearly four decades. In addition to the issues exposed, and for them as well, the study intends to highlight the relevance, timeliness and quality of Caio's work, by addressing universal and perennial themes that transcend his historical moment and for his unique and refined style in the art of writing. The Author has passed away in 1996 and his books continue to be reissued, including unreleased material, new translations of his books are being published, as well as e-books, in Brazil and abroad. The fact that he has been conquering so many young readers of the XXI century attests to the vitality of the work of this master of ingenuity and art. To investigate and describe the ways in which the narrative unity is performed, the theoretical background are the essays by Ricardo Piglia, conferences and lectures by Jorge Luis Borges, theories of Novel of Formation or Bildungsroman, Joseph Campbell's research on The Hero's Journey or Monomyth and other additional studies.

Abstract:
Rosa Montero's novels Lágrimas en la lluvia and Peso del corazón focus on Bruna Husky, an android private detective living in Madrid in 2109. Husky's career leads her into investigating various sinister plots, both of which she falls victim to. These quests lead her to make discoveries about herself that challenge her beliefs about herself. All the cases that Bruna investigates take her on journeys that mirror Campbell's structure of the monomythic quest. My analysis of the novels focuses on how Bruna follows the model of the Campbellian cycle while at the same time questioning the quest, keeping true to archetypes of the feminine quest as established by Anis Pratt and Dana Heller. My article focuses on three distinctive steps in the quest, the crossing of the threshold, initiation, and the return, as well as the most important characteristic of the feminine quest, the heroine's negation of the patriarchal society.

Abstract:
In Brazil, many children have the opportunity to learn about different sports. This contact often awakens an attraction for it practice and it\'s given a great importance that makes them choose sport over others activities common to other people of the same age, such as child\'s plays, family and school contact. As they search for better conditions for sport development, these new athletes often have to distance themselves from their family at an early age. This work sought to investigate how Brazilian Olympic women, medalists of collective modalities, recognized the moment that marks the beginning of hers sporting career, especially those athletes that had to leave their homes. The methodology is anchored in the biographical narratives, considered a modality of oral history. From the biographical narratives of these women, we relate the beginning of the their sporting careers with the mythical figure of Kairos, the god of opportune time

The representative figure of the mythological hero has an important significance for any and all society. Superheroes of comics have played a similar role in modern times not only because of their innumerable mediatic appearances, but because they are a direct or indirectly grounded form of representation in the heroic figure in the society of diverse cultures. In this scenario, Batman, hero of the comics, stands out in popularity and brings in one of the most well-known brands in pop culture and most valued of the cultural industry. However, in order to understand the representative strength of the character as a brand, it is necessary, first, to analyze the journey of the character, from its creation, to the media in which it is published, as well as the planned associations of Develop the narratives of the adventures of the hero, completely based on the concepts and mythical characteristics that form this type of character.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis proposes the analysis of the trajectory of the manga Angel Sanctuarys protagonist, from author Yuki Kaori, originally published in Japan between 1994 and 2000, considering Joseph Campbells Heros Journey, in order to trace his profile as a contemporary Japanese manga hero. It also proposes the analysis of the mangas dialog with the Judeo-Christian mythology, main source of the authors inspiration and references for the confection of her story. To do so, the characteristic elements of comic books and the Heros Journey are presented, so that they can be applied to Angel Sanctuary, in which the journeys steps and archetypes are indicated, as well as their relations to the mythologies in which they are based. The analysis points to a difference between typical Japanese thinking, that tends to face the presence of opposing forces inside a single being and in nature with naturality, in contrast with the well-defined separation between Good and Evil existent in Judeo-Christian religions.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of the novel Brolga and an exegesis examining in what ways the ideas of katabasis and deterritorialisation inform an understanding of descent narratives in contemporary Australian outback fiction. When writing the creative piece, it was observed that Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey was an imprecise model for my manuscript and indeed for many of the contemporary novels I had read written in similar outback settings. On analysis a better fit lies in the idea of a heroic journey from which there is no clear return from the underworld. This narrative form is defined in this thesis as a katabatic narrative. To unpack this narrative trope, the inverse of territoriality, deterritorialisation, is used as a lens to examine the complex thematic and symbolic resonances of the outback in both Brolga and analogous works of contemporary outback fiction.

Social entrepreneurship as an innovative approach to tackle societal challenges has become increasingly popular in the past decades. Theoretically, research on this phenomenon has been particularly fruitful as it is situated at the nexus of entrepreneurship and social value creation, which has opened up ample avenues for novel explorations. This thesis builds on the entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship literatures by providing insight into the role of social entrepreneurs’ indirect discursive practices and direct entrepreneurial actions to address societal challenges. Drawing on theoretical concepts from the literature on social movements, crowdfunding, and social identity, the different chapters of this thesis examine the motivational framing tactics of social enterprises, the cognitive and emotional appeals in entrepreneurial narratives in prosocial settings, and the interaction between social identity and entrepreneurial action in the case of marginalized communities. In this thesis, qualitative and quantitative methodologies are employed to empirically investigate these indirect practices and direct actions of social entrepreneurs and their ventures. This thesis further develops our knowledge about the social entrepreneurship field by specifically focusing on the approaches to address societal challenges through motivational framing, cognitive and emotional appeals, and insider social entrepreneurship and, therewith, aims to make both a theoretical and practical contribution.

Abstract:
This essay investigates the applicability of Joseph Campbell’s notion of the Hero’s Journey from his theoretical work The Hero with a Thousand Faces on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again. This has been done by outlining the essential aspects of Campbell’s theory and then performing a reading and analysis of Tolkien’s work. Furthermore, this essay focuses on the narrative structure proposed by Campbell, but also the heroic character’s development—in this instance, Bilbo Baggins’ development. As such, a brief examination of Campbell’s attitude and use of Freudian psychoanalysis has been performed as well as a presentation of Bilbo Baggins’ character and dual nature before the adventure. As a possible line of argument Tolkien’s knowledge of myth is also briefly expounded on. This essay does not research or make any definitive statements on the universal applicability of Campbell’s theory, but merely finds that Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again appears to conform well to Campbell’s proposed narrative structure and that the development of Bilbo’s heroic character, or his character arc, is in concurrence with this as well.

Abstract:
The screenplay, “Perfect Blood” (Frank and Stein), is the first two-hour episode of a two-part television miniseries Frank and Stein. This creative work is a science fiction story that speculates on the future of Western nations in a world where petroleum is scarce. A major theme that has been explored in the miniseries is the tension between the advantages and dangers of scientific progress without regard to human consequences. “Perfect Blood” (Frank and Stein) was written as part of my personal creative journey, which has been the transformation from research scientist to creative writer. In the exegetical component of this thesis, I propose that a key challenge for any scientist writing science fiction is the shift from conducting empirical research in a laboratory-based situation to engaging in creative practice research. During my personal creative journey, I found that a predominant difficulty in conducting research within a creative practice-led paradigm was unleashing my creativity and personal viewpoint, practices that are frowned upon in scientific research. The aim of the exegesis is to demonstrate that the transformative process from science to art is not neat and well-structured. My personal creative journey was fraught with many ‘wrong’ turns. However, after reflecting on the experience, I realise that every varied piece of research that I undertook allowed me to progress to the next stage, the next draft of Frank and Stein. And via the disorder of the creative process, a screenplay finally emerged that was both structured and creative, which are equally essential elements in screenwriting.

Abstract:
The purpose of this multi-method single-case study was to examine the application of Joseph Campbell's Heroic Journey model as a means of professional identity creation in the life of Walt Disney. Walt Disney was an entrepreneur, cartoonist, filmmaker, inventor, studio head, and family man whose career stretched through the first half of the 20th century. Walt used his imagination and creativity to establish industry norms in the animation, film, television, and amusement park industries. Walt Disney's legacy and vision continue to be a viable influence within the Walt Disney Company today. Campbell's Heroic Journey model was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The Heroic Journey model is rooted in folklore but is used as a means of personal self-discovery and self-construction (Murray, 2009). In the model, Campbell (2008) suggested that the world's myths were not a series of differing myths but one myth, the monomyth, played out differently across cultures. The monomyth is broken into three parts (separation, initiation, and return), with 17 stages dispersed across the parts. The Heroic Journey model states that all heroes leave their familiar world, progress through trials, and return home with new learning for change. This framework was applied to Walt Disney's life to look at the narrative influence on his professional identity. The expansion of narrative scholarship and its influence on creating personal and professional identity using historical research, document review, and observational data was the purpose of this qualitative study. The Heroic Journey model acts as a lens to create and discover one's identity by using stories as a vehicle of understanding. All of life's experiences must be viewed as narrative experiences to use the Heroic Journey model. This study found that narrative cannot be separated from the human experience. It is one's life and lived experiences that create the story of their existence through separation, initiation, and return. Every experience from one's birth to death contributes to whom they will become both personally and professionally. By looking at life as a series of stories and narratives, one realizes the depth of their identity through reflection and examination.

Full text
Abstract:
Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, establishes a pattern for the hero to answer the call to adventure, ask the question of the goddess and receive her boon, and return to his homeland. Campbell does not, however, make any suggestions about a myth whose protagonist is female. Erich Neumann, in The Origins and History of Consciousness, hints that the woman may, indeed, be her own goddess, that she must give herself the boon she already carries. The novels of Anita Brookner illustrate the dual nature of the feminine protagonist: the seeker and the boon giver. The feminine hero (even when Brookner's protagonist is masculine, he exhibits feminine qualities) hears the call to adventure, receives the teachings of the goddess and/or her representative, receives help fromother beings (in myth these would be supernatural beings), realizes that she carries the answer to the cosmic question of selfhood within her, and, following an apotheosis, makes a return to society. Much of the present work is spent delving into both the monomythic and feminist structures of Brookner's novels. Although Brookner characterizes herself as a "reluctant feminist," examination of her novels reveals a subtle adherence to feminist principles which can be ascertained by viewing each novel in terms of the monomyth schema.

Abstract:
Background: Supervised Injectable Opiate Treatment (IOT) is a complex, intensive treatment modality that has been effective in treating long-term, chronic, previously treatment refractory heroin users. The mechanisms that make it an effective treatment modality are little explored, and never in a UK context. Aims: In a UK supervised IOT context, this thesis set out to describe the long-term treatment trajectory of patients receiving IOT. Additional aims were to describe the experience of patients receiving IOT and ascertain the role of IOT in the patient’s overall journey of recovery. In so doing, the thesis contributes to the scientific understanding of IOT. Method: Quantitative measures are employed to describe treatment process and the effect of treatment duration on outcome. Qualitative measures are utilised to describe the following: patients’ drug use and treatment histories; goals for, motivations, and expectations of IOT; experience with IOT; satisfaction with IOT; views on the impact of IOT; and views of, and goals for, patients’ recovery. Results: Quantitative findings illustrate that some participants remained in IOT long-term, whereas others discharged or moved back on to oral treatment modalities. When long-term IOT was undertaken, initial gains made were sustained. Qualitative findings illustrate that patients conceive effective IOT as flexible, psychosocial, person-centred, and encompasses autonomous ongoing support. Recovery is perceived as an ongoing, individualised journey, and the need for support following both IOT and abstinence are identified. Discussion: Strengths and limitations of the research are discussed. IOT is best delivered as an individualised, time-limited, goal-driven, flexible treatment programme for those entrenched users with long-term, treatment refractory histories. Numerous findings have utility for policy and clinical practice and there is scope for examination of individually tailored treatment programmes through further research and, a systematic exploration of longitudinal outcomes.

Abstract:
Quintus scholarship has experienced something of a renaissance over the last decade. However, it is now seventy years since the last monograph that focused on the Homeric heroes of his epic (Mansur, 1940). It is time for a reappraisal and this thesis, which utilizes modern theoretical techniques and methodologies, seeks to meet this need. My study is predominantly concerned with the reception of the hero in Quintus’ Posthomerica, but I also use these receptions to explore Quintus’ epic poetics. Unlike Mansur, I explore not only Homer’s heroes but also heroes that did not feature in the Iliad, including the narrator himself. In my Introduction, I consider central questions relating to Quintus and his poem; for instance, who was he? when was he working? did he have access to the Epic Cycle? and did he engage with Latin literature? A brief summary of my thesis chapters is also included. The five chapters are sequenced in such a way as to suggest thematic developments in my study, and Quintus’ work. Each chapter begins with a character study of the eponymous hero, I then view the characters as signifiers – embodiments of centrally important ideas, regarding epic and beyond. Chapter I: Penthesileia - after exploring Penthesileia’s aristeia, I consider wider issues of women, gender and epic anomaly. Chapter II: Achilleus - I view Achilleus in action, as the model for other heroes and in reminiscence. Chapter III: Nestor – Nestor (with other gerontes, like Priam) becomes a paradigm for multiple meanings of ‘diminishment’, and traditional inter-generational degeneration is inverted. Chapter IV: Neoptolemos – Achilleus’ son challenges the negative portrayals which dominated the tradition and shows himself to be more than a worthy heir both to Quintus’ and to Homer’s Achilleus. Chapter V: Primary Narrator - Quintus’ Narrator reveals himself as poet-hero throughout. I explore his language, learnedness and character, as Neoptolemos’ heir.

Full text
Abstract:
The space, the place and the landscape permeate the heroic journey in the works of Sylvie Germain to the point of upsetting the hero in his relation to exteriority. The protean aspect of the heroic environment engages the analysis towards a preliminary distinction between a primitive space on the one hand and a transformed place on the other. The study proposes to reveal the phantasmagoric spaces born of places and spaces strongly connoted. The imaginary landscapes, which constitute the second part of our study, assimilate many mythological references which participate in the narrative success. The imaginary spaces, specified by their intertextual charge, open in a complex and highly referential way the creation of Sylvie Germain’s spaces. This complexity is reflected in the physical and intellectual paths of heroes. In this way, the author paradoxically creates her own textual space, to which she gives a significant place in the novels. Finally, the examination emphasizes the movement, which characterizes the aesthetic of Germain, and which proposes a narrative singularity. It is to the textual spaces that we are led. The final interrogation questions the disappearance of the geographic referent when the place is less and less accompanied by a history, a location or a name. The spaces traversed, studied, fantasized, urban, natural, invite reflection to undertake a topographic taxonomy in tie and tension with the stratification of the heroic journey. If the place, the space or the landscape treated in our research are at the heart of a author’s writing process in the imagery of the soil to the rooted spaces, the narrative wandering, marked by the abandonment of spatial precisions in the last stories, interrogates the author about its present relation to space and retrospectively on its function in previous creation

Abstract:
Background: This thesis aims to show that the narratives of the Nag Hammadi Apocalypse of Pauland First Apocalypse of James are written for a Valentinian audience. The purpose is to broaden the field of research on Valentinianism by showing how the authors and their implied readers composed and perceived the texts in question. Method: Comparing the mythological language of the two narratives and their description of a hero’s journey in a transcendent reality it is possible to disentangle the Valentinian material from the imaginative world of the reader, a world consisted of ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology as well as Jewish apocalypticism and early Christian legends and traditions. The texts are also compared with new research in the field, other related Valentinian scriptures, the New Testament, and Christian Apocrypha. Results: The texts are pseudepigraphic and written within a Jewish apocalyptic genre sometime during the late second or early third century. The symbolism and the diverse metaphors of the narratives indicate that the texts incorporate a specific soteriological message through embedded Valentinian mythology. The implied reader is to understand that the material world is an illusion and that the purpose of the initiate is to awaken the mind and acquire knowledge about the truth. By doing so the redemption of the believer’s spirit from its human body and soul leads to the spirits reunion with God. Conclusion: The analysis of the texts points toward the fact that the narratives could very well have been used for catechetical or other educational purposes within a Valentinian community. The language and form of the two narratives fit to serve this purpose. In many ways, the reader has to be initiated within a Valentinian context in order to grasp the intended message.

Abstract:
This essay examines influencers’ framing of mental illness and how the framing could possibly affect the growing problem of mental illness among Swedish youth. Previous research concerning mental illness among youth, social media and social contagion is presented as a basic understanding of the problem at hand. Approximately 16 000 Instagram posts from Sweden’s most influential Instagram accounts were reviewed for content about mental illness. Posts containing descriptions of mental illness were extracted and analyzed using thematical analysis. The main finding from the thematical analysis was that influencers tended to use The Hero’s Journey dramaturgy in the framing of mental illness. The main conclusion made from the study was that influencer framing of mental health issues, consciously or unconsciously, tended to augment mental illness in a number of ways. The influencers seemed to have developed specializations in different forms of mental illness. The specialized influencer took upon him/herself the role of a mentor to followers experiencing symptoms of the same type of mental illness, leading them on for their own Hero’s Journey. Hence, the mechanisms of The Hero’s Journey were shown to, in themselves, have a tendency to increase the contagious effects of mental illness.

Abstract:
This thesis presents and analyzes the author's original jazz composition "A Hero's Journey," based on the ancient and widespread storytelling pattern that Joseph Campbell called the "monomyth." Using major concepts from the monomyth, the author composed a suite for ten-piece jazz orchestra consisting of six scenes divided into two acts. Although rooted in the jazz tradition, the piece borrows freely from classical music, African music, Indian music, and modern rock and hip-hop to create an adventurous and continually evolving musical experience. This thesis first provides an overview of the entire suite, then discusses its important melodic themes, and finally analyzes the techniques used for harmonic development within the piece.
