Abstract:
The article analyzes the catastrophic moods in some segments of Armenian society. This occurs due to the ongoing war, lack of faith in the future, loss of social orientation. The Armenian society does not feel care on the part of the ruling class, do not see its responsibility, feels helplessness in the face of external and internal threats, and, therefore, is in confrontation with the ruling class. And here is the new phenomenon of mass heroism of the people as a response to the catastrophic situation and reliance on heroes as saviors of the nation. Social science and education should more closely examine this phenomenon and try to make the heroism more meaningful and much full of sense.

Adhikari, Tara Prasad. "Teasing out History: Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children towards Mock Heroism." Harvest 2, no. 1 (2023): 107–18. http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/harvest.v2i1.54412.

Abstract:
This paper claims that Rushdie develops his protagonist Saleem as an unreliable anti-hero. In doing so, the novel borrows tools and techniques of Mock Heroism. The Restoration and Augustan authors John Dryden and Alexander Pope are chiefly responsible for the mock-heroic genre. A mock-heroic book parodies the heroic style in literature in a sarcastic fashion, mimicking the actions or manner of a hero, often comically in nonheroic circumstances. Saleem claims to be the new India’s voice, taking on significant political responsibility and “evoking” these heroic deeds. He is, however, powerless, nd his magical ability to spy on people is dependent on a disproportionately large nose. His reliance on his cucumber nose to sense the true history is really hilarious. In this sense, Saleem is undoubtedly an absurd hero because his attempt to recapture what has been already lost is an absurdist attempt. Saleem is well aware that his historical account of India will be incomplete anyway. Despite this, he does not hesitate to boast that he is the truest of the historians and his version of India is much better.

Abstract:
This article discusses the contribution of school-based ceremonies in two Israeli Druze schools to shaping identity and deepening the sense of citizenship among Druze students. The Druze have a unique position in Israel as opposed to other Arabic-speaking Israelis, serving in the army and generally maintaining high levels of patriotism. State ceremonies, especially the memorial ceremonies of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), have gradually come to occupy a central place in the Israeli education system since 1948. The memorial ceremonies combine the cognitive and emotional dimensions. The historical information conveyed through them is combined with feelings of bereavement and loss and with stories of heroism and sacrifice. The study found that great emphasis is placed on these activities in the two Druze schools studied and that they strengthen the students’ Druze Israeli identity and sense of civic pride and responsibility, together with their unique Druze identity.

Social and political processes, economic and state-building transformations in our country, and the military and political situation around Ukraine, led to the return o f the theme o f heroism to scientific discourse, rethinking the use o f heroic potential in shaping patriotic consciousness o f citizens, national identity o f Ukrainians. The problem o f heroism is connected with the evaluation o f the activity not only o f individual historical personalities or even whole generations o f the people, but also with its fixation in the cultural memory o f mankind. The phenomenon o f the heroic is in the range o f research interests o f many social sciences and in the focus o f attention o f educational institutions. The moral significance o f the heroic is important, because this concept has a significant educational potential, contributes to the formation o f humane, noble goals, active citizenship and patriotism Recent research and publications analysis. The essence o f the category o f the heroic was explored by J. Bruno, J. Vico, G. V. Hegel, T. Carlyle, D. Campbell, F. Nietzsche, K. Jung and others. The formation o f the phenomenon o f heroism is outlined in the works o f G. Skovoroda, P. Yurkevich, T. Shevchenko, I. Franko, L. Ukrainka, M. Hrushevsky, D. Dontsov, V. Lypynsky, G. Vashchenko, V. Sukhomlynsky, S. Krymsky, V. Baranivsky, O. Khmilyar. In the Western philosophical thought o f the XX century the understanding o f the heroic can be divided into four areas. The first direction continues to develop the concept o f T. Carlyle (understanding the hero as a «superman»), the second considers the hero as a social myth and tool o f psychoanalysis, for the third direction the hero is a phenomenon o f social consciousness, a regulator o f social life. The fourth is the concept o f degeneration, the representatives o f which reject the existence possibility o f the heroic in a postmodern society. Paper objective. It reflected social and cultural settings o f a specific historical period and indicated the variability o f ideas about the status o f this phenomenon. It was defined that people constantly were coming back to that category and fixing with that fact the highest level o f spiritual beauty and activity ofpersonality, which was able to give hope and to lead, to provoke the desire to imitate. The attention in the research work was focused on the philosophical idea ofthe twentieth century because at that period there was intensification o f scientific research for clarification o f those concepts. Conclusions of the research. Modern Ukrainian patriotism must be the result o f the practical realization o f a responsible sense o f citizenship as an integrated quality o f a modern man. Forming patriotic feelings in Ukrainian youth, teachers should rely on suchbasic characteristics ofpatriotism as the socially consolidating nature o f its manifestation, civic responsibility and active position o f all members o f the community. As a result, patriotic feelings for Ukrainian youth should become not only a stable and conscious identification with their native country, but also a readiness for responsible and effective civic action.

Terry, Gareth, and Virginia Braun. "‘It's kind of me taking responsibility for these things’: Men, vasectomy and ‘contraceptive economies’." Feminism & Psychology 21, no. 4 (2011): 477–95. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0959353511419814.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines vasectomy as a gendered practice of (non)reproductive masculinity. Reporting on interview-based data, in which a number of New Zealand men made sense of the operation, this article used critical thematic analysis to extract themes from semi-structured interviews with participants who had vasectomies in ‘typical’ circumstances. Primary themes of ‘taking responsibility’ and ‘vasectomy as an act of minor heroism’ were extracted from the data. We will argue that men constructed their ‘new found’ responsibility (and the heroic slant they added to it) within an ‘economy of gratitude’, meaning any involvement by men in the reproductive/contraceptive sphere is worthy of particular praise and value. While there may be some strategic value in these ideas, they draw upon existing discourses of orthodox masculinities and in this way may perpetuate (rather than challenge) the notion that men are doing something ‘special’ by having a vasectomy. This ‘specialness’ has the potential to ratify ongoing male privilege within heterosexual relationships, rather than the disruption that (at face value) it appears to be generating.

Abstract:
I recall two things about my exchange with the friendly soul who rang me several years ago with the offer to stand for the second vice presidency of the MLA. First is the vivid recollection of my serious and mostly incapacitating illness at the time: as it turned out this was to disable me almost completely for the first year's Executive Council meetings. The second is my somewhat ungracious response to the (mostly undeserved) compliment contained in the suggestion that I should accept the nomination: “Do I have to do anything if I get elected?” I asked with almost ridiculous impertinence. I think the answer was no, and I think I should say in my own defense that I formulated my question very specifically to mean only “do I have to do anything very much as second vice president?,” a position I had frivolously assumed was not usually thought of as bearing a great responsibility. In any case, I was elected, and I did nothing the first year except, as I said, miss most of the meetings because of illness, unending treatment, and pain. Never having had much to do with administration during the many, too many, decades of my teaching life, I have to report to you that in my year as first vice president I had the opportunity at the outset to see how a major professional organization is run by really competent people and, second, to witness its humane and rational responses to the various demands of our time and those of our by now somewhat anxious guild, especially its younger members, for whom the job crisis has been so disabling and discouraging a symptom of this fin de siècle. Because of this genuine learning experience throughout my presidency, I am really grateful to, and happy to mention in particular, the extraordinary talents of our superb executive director, Phyllis Franklin, whose sensitive intelligence and marvelous skills not only guided us as a very large professional organization through a series of new challenges but, to speak personally, rescued your faltering president on numerous occasions when his temper and peculiar sense of humor got the better of him. May I also mention Phyllis Franklin's senior colleagues in the association, to whom I and all the other elected officers and members owe so much: Martha Evans, director of MLA book publications; Terence Ford, director of Bibliographic Information Services and editor of the MLA International Bibliography; Judy Goulding, managing editor of MLA publications; Amilde Hadden, director of financial operations; Maribeth Kraus, director of convention programs; David Laurence, director of English programs and ADE; Regina Vorbeck, associate executive director and head of the Division of MLA Operations; Elizabeth Welles, director of foreign language programs and ADFL; and Carol Zuses, coordinator of governance and assistant to the executive director?

Abstract:
Al-Hariiq in the Arabic context means fire, but in various social and cultural traditions, the term has a broader and symbolic meaning. Fires are not only understood as natural disasters, but also related to social, cultural, and spiritual phenomena in people's lives. In this context, al-Hariiq can reflect the tradition of land clearing with the slash and burn method by the Dayak people or the Sewu Ngewu ritual which is carried out to reject the army in Rakeda Village. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the text of al-Hariiq (fire) in the book Qira'at al-Rasyidah through contextual and intertextual approaches. Therefore, this research is important to examine how al-Hariiq is not only understood literally, but also in a deeper sense in accordance with local social and cultural dynamics. The contextual approach is used to understand al-Hariiq from a social and cultural point of view, while the intertextual approach traces the meaning through relationships with other texts, both in classical Islamic literature, Jahiliyah literature, and ethical philosophy. The story of al-Hariiq in the book Qira'at al-Rasyidah is analyzed to have similarities with the story of the Prophet Moses and the poet Zuhair bin Abi Salma, which highlights the value of heroism, responsibility, and social solidarity. In the context of ethical philosophy, the heroic actions in this story can also be attributed to the principles of consequentialism and deontology, which affirm the importance of performing moral actions without prioritizing personal gain. The results of the study show that the text of al-Hariiq in Qira'at al-Rasyidah has a deep meaning and reflects the values of responsibility, leadership, and heroism. This research is expected to contribute to enriching the understanding of Arabic literary texts, as well as providing insight into the relationship between texts and cultural contexts in the Islamic literary tradition.

Abstract:
This article addresses the issue of educating students about high and valuable moral qualities through the heroes portrayed in literary works. It highlights the importance of instilling universal personal values in students, values that significantly influence the formation of an individual's character and personality as a whole. Presently, the primary requirements of modern education involve nurturing a generation with a sense of patriotism, a high level of spiritual thinking, and a strong sense of responsibility. The significance of utilizing the works of Magzhan Zhumabayev and Maxim Gorky in patriotic education is underscored. Darkness and light, East and West, heroism and betrayal, life and death coexist within the creativity of these writers. Life strategies depend on value orientations. This study featured the life strategies typical of men imprisoned for major crimes. The research relied on E. E. Sapogova’s Modes of Life Questionnaire, M. Rokeach’s Value Orientations, the procedure developed by R. Inglehart and modified by M. S. Yanitskiy, D. A. Leontiev’s Meaningful Life Orientation Test, etc. The empirical part of the research involved 52 inmates who were serving their sentences in a colony-settlement. Most respondents proved to be focused on the values of socialization. However, the research revealed differences in their life modes and value orientations. Those convicted for serious crimes demonstrated false heroism and focused on external success. They had a much lower sense of life purpose, while their choice of values depended on socially approved behavior, e.g., a well-paid job, family values, responsibility, diligence, etc. The data obtained can be used to develop re-socialization programs for ex-prisoners.

Abstract:
The importance of understanding the four pillars of nationalism in the life of the nation and state for today's young generation, especially nationalism, is so that youth have the values of national insight and patriotism in themselves so that they have a sense of responsibility in providing the best for their country. To fulfill this, the youth must have creative and innovative ideas and ideas in building the nation and state. The four pillars of nationalism consisting of Pancasila, Undang-Undang Dasar Tahun 1945, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia have the value of moral principles to achieve the life of an independent, sovereign, just and prosperous Indonesian nation as stated in the goals of the Nation and state in the UUD Negara Republik Indonesia tahun 1945. This is reflected that these 4 pillars have important purposes and meanings and are useful for current and future generations.
It should be realized by today's youth that the younger generation must be required to face all the challenges that exist today, namely globalization which is very extraordinary in affecting the sense of nationalism of youth. We can also see the many law violations that occur committed by youth as a result of the lack of actualizing the values of the 4 pillars of nationalism in family life, society and the nation and state.
As for other efforts that can be made to foster a sense of nationalism, namely by making a work with the theme of love for the country, heroism, and so on that is national in nature so that in the process of making the work the younger generation will be reminded of the struggles of the nation's heroes before and thus a sense of nationalism in themselves will be embedded and grow in their souls. Related to the above, there are actually many positive activities that can be carried out by young people to build their country so that the sense of nationalism can be maintained.

Abstract:
The analysis of the mechanism of the formation of historical memory and pride in the ideas of young people at the present stage is in demand due to the fact that these social phenomena can help young people to a large extent realize their own involvement in the Motherland, in the fateful affairs of their ancestors, and are also focused on developing a sense of responsibility for the future. their state. Lacking knowledge and not having an idea of the experience of previous generations, it is not easy for people to maintain civic identity, adhere to and pass on traditions to future generations, foster spirituality and, in general, navigate society. The article outlines the relevance of the issue of preserving historical memory at the present stage, characterizes the relationship of scientific and practical aspects of the topic under consideration, provides an overview of authoritative publications on the issue under study. The author describes the state programs of the federal and regional levels, reflecting the directions of the patriotic education of the younger generation in the Russian Federation in general, and in the Yaroslavl region in particular. The practical significance of the work is substantiated by the results of a qualitative study, which fixes the peculiarities of perpetuating the memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War in the ideas of young students, as well as their attitude to mass commemorative events during the Victory Day celebration. An analysis of the results of focus group discussions revealed ambivalent features of the preservation of historical memory in the ideas of modern youth: along with the awareness of the tragedy of individual memories of events during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, a component of understanding the heroism of events and the fate of Soviet people is also recorded.

Abstract:
There is nothing that can affect the spirit and national consciousness of the people as an artistic word. Glorification, propagation and transmission of human feelings from generation to generation is the highest task of the art of speech and literature. In this sense, there is a greater task and responsibility before genius masters of a word. In keeping the people alive, instilling human feelings, and glorifying the highest human feelings such as patriotism, heroism, and bravery, the poets held a leading position in all periods of society. The works of the poet Mohammad Hussein Shahriyar (1906-1988), the most famous figure of both South and North Azerbaijani literature, and the pearls of art he created, especially the poem “Sahandiya” written in a modern style, are of great interest to many readers today. The main purpose of the article is to acquaint the modern reader with the valuable heritage of the poet, promote this heritage by demonstrating the artistic features and importance of the poem “Sahandiya”, which is considered one of the masterpieces among the poet's works written in the native language.
Although the poet does not speak in an open context in the poem, the city of M.A. Sabir, remembering Shamakha and Shirvan, actually reminds of the problem of divided Azerbaijan.
The last parts of the poem are dedicated to the problem of separation, one of the most painful issues of a divided Azerbaijan. The master described the enthusiasm of the poets of North Azerbaijan for his voice as the support of the mountains, the clear dawn of the waters of the Araz, holding the lamp in the darkness, "the sturgeon of that foal." Due to these features - the high appreciation of national and spiritual interests, the poem "Sahandiya" remains relevant at all times.

Abstract:
The article explores the relationship between the dialogical way of existence of religion and social stability. The author argues that dialogue is becoming a way of existence of religion in societies with a high level of religious freedom. The author emphasizes constructive types of communication between religions, one of which is traditionally interreligious (interfaith) dialogue. The definition of religious dialogue as a broad communication phenomenon is considered, which, in particular, involves the interaction of not only religions with each other (interreligious, interfaith dialogue), but also communication between religion and society (religious and social dialogue) on important issues of the present, and reactions to them. It is substantiated that the reluctance of a certain religious institution to engage in dialogue may be based on the theological position of the church caused by the phenomenon of «ambivalence of the sacred». Some ways to restore the dialogue of religions and overcome the conflict conditions of their interaction are proposed. In conclusion, it is noted that the «war of civilizations» launched by the Russian Federation in Ukraine brings the dialogue of religions to a new level, namely: requires a revision of certain theological theories, the formation of new theological visions; significantly actualizes the issues of justice, heroism, good and evil, the impossibility of violence, ethical problems and their reflection in theological thought; requires religions to take a civic stance, where it is no longer possible to speak of secularization in the sense of separation of religion from politics; sharpens and problematizes the attitude of religions to the national question as a result of the Russian Federation’s provoked terrorist methods of warfare, and thus the threat to humanity of genocide on a national basis; raises the issue of universal values, the humanistic paradigm and personal responsibility, which brings all religious systems too close together; meta-anthropologizes religion, absolutizes humanism as a value when a believer «goes beyond» mere existence to approach eternal truths, where the concept of «salvation» loses its narrowly individualistic characteristic.

Abstract:
The article offers a description of the phenomenon of fatherhood in Junginian analytical psychology. The main archetypal variants of fatherhood are analyzed. The work of the mechanism of inclusion of the archetype in the consciousness of a man from the position of C. G. Jung is considered. Changing the surrounding life around in the form of changing old to new modes, fashions for men's hairstyles, the appearance of a man's suit in clothes, accessories, shoes, architectural preferences in urban planning, semantics, stylistics in speech does not change the archetype. There remain life scenarios of people's behavior, parental programs and parental prescriptions, mechanisms of conflicts and agreements, this requires the discovery of internal forces and patterns of male images in archetypes. Archetypal images of fatherhood are the information carrier of modern fatherhood. Among the initiating archetypal situations of both sacred and social properties is fatherhood in a man's life. Fatherhood from the position of the highest level of archetypal maturity according to K. G. Jung is called the King-Father. This archetype of fatherhood shows the symbols of purity, holiness, purity of male spiritual maturity, expressed in creative giving, heroism, the formation of a sense of perspective, spiritual knowledge, service, courage, independence, creative lifestyle, autonomy, freedom. In fatherhood, the following functions of a man can be distinguished – fertilizing, nourishing, nurturing, initiating, teaching, blessing, spiritual functions of the Father, leading to a spiritual search for options for male heroism in the behavior of a man. In the latter version, this is a blessing initiation as a wish for a happy fate, paternal responsibility extends to ancestral branches, missionary work, patronage, the creation of imperishable works. The archetype of the Father also has a shadow destructive side, expressed in suppression, devaluation, obsessive jealousy, restriction of freedom in order to feel his importance and the demand for worship. The proposed theoretical conclusions create prerequisites for further study and understanding of the phenomenon of fatherhood in the modern world in methodological, substantive, procedural aspects.

Abstract:
In the philosophical views of F. Dostoevsky's theme of mental suffering occupies a special place and is associated with the category of spiritual purification and gaining faith in oneself, in other people and the true purpose of life. In the novel "Humiliated and Insulted" Natasha Ihmeneva experiences the torments of an internal mental struggle, but in the end, in the spirit of English manor novels, she overcomes her own delusions and selfishness and acquires a genuine sense of her own worthiness. In the novel "Humiliated and Insulted" F. Dostoevsky poses an important problem of selfishness and the right to personal happiness. This problem cannot be separated from the question of personal responsibility of everyone for their actions, because the well-being and well-being of some is often bought at the expense of the mental pain and suffering of other people. The two-vector character distinguishes the portrayal of another heroine of the novel by F. Dostoevsky's "Humiliated and insulted" Nelly. The Russian writer presents a psychological portrait of the heroine, ready and able to sacrifice and sacrifice her position for the sake of others, and others use this willingness of a defenseless child to their advantage. However, there is an internal struggle in Nelly's own soul, and reconciliation for herself she considers impossible. The heroine of the story F. Dostoevsky's "Akulkin's Husband" embodies the best typological features of the image of a Russian woman. The shark in the writer's literary text has a loving heart and the ability to mercy and self-sacrifice, which was extremely important in the human personality for F. himself. Dostoevsky. The image of Lisa from "Notes from the Underground" is associated with the moral and ethical position of F. Dostoevsky, for whom the ability of a person to selflessly sacrifice himself for the sake of others is the highest moral and spiritual degree of his development. The character of Polina in the novel "The Gambler" opens a new female type in the work of the Russian writer. It is with this type and with this description of female feelings and female passion that the subsequent perception of the image of a Russian woman in the Western European cultural tradition will be associated. Russian Russian theme in the novel "The Gambler" is connected with the image of the heroine's grandmother, who alone calls her by her Russian name – Praskovya. The possibility of Polina's return to Russia is interpreted by the writer as an appeal to national roots and native soil.

Abstract:
Humanitarian aid workers typically reject the accolade of hero as both untrue and undesirable. Untrue when they claim not to be acting beyond the call of duty, and undesirable so far as celebrating heroism risks elevating “heroic” choices over safer, and perhaps wiser ones. However, this leaves unresolved a tension between the denial of heroism and a sense in which certain humanitarian acts really appear heroic. And, the concern that in rejecting the aspiration to heroism an opportunity is lost to inspire more and better humanitarian action. Having set out this problem in more detail in Part I, the argument in Part II will suggest that a virtue ethics approach to humanitarian moral obligations can make good sense of our intuitions concerning the role of heroism in humanitarian action. In Part III I will argue that at least “professional” humanitarians, instead of rejecting heroism, should aim to be heroes, in the sense of displaying a virtue of humanity in high-stakes contexts, because this is consistent with the aim of humanitarian action. Finally, some lingering problems of demandingness and motivation are considered.

Abstract:
The Purpose of Study: This article aims to understand the compositional methods used in the propaganda. In this sense, the central theme of this study is to understand how heroism was portrayed in the posters of the Great War propaganda in the United States.Literature Review/Background: The way heroism is portrayed in the Great War propaganda posters is the main topic of this paper. Propaganda in this sense is understood as a means aimed at manipulating information so that public opinion conforms to the propagandist's intentions.Method: In this paper, it is believed that the study of posters depicting heroism will deepen the study of propaganda and its use as an instrument of deception. Because the phenomenon of heroism occupies an important place in cultures, it has been discussed in detail in a separate section. The posters discussed in the study were analyzed using the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. Results: The depiction of heroism on the Great War propaganda posters underpins its narratives in both direct and indirect expression. The direct messages of heroism were mainly accompanied by slogans that combined religious idealism, morality, a noble cause, honor, and justice. The indirect messages, on the other hand, were associated with themes of unity, desirability, journey, and duty. In addition, the depiction of heroism was directed at women and children, who were referred to as the 'home front.'Conclusion: In poster propaganda in the United States, the distinction between good as 'our' side and evil as 'their' side is obvious. It has been noted that the use of heroism in propaganda posters at the most critical moments of the Great War was a crucial element, as its depiction reduced the war to an abstract metaphor rather than conveying the harsh reality of war.

Abstract:
Zha Mingzhe's 1997 production of Sartre's Morts sans sépulture takes bold creative license in the form of retooled dialogues; hard-edged stage design; moody, ironic music; and the brutal acoustic ‘facsimile’ of torture to reimagine the play for Chinese audiences. Zha's production is neither an exuberant celebration of ‘heroism’ as the term is conventionally understood, nor a parable-like play given to ‘philosophizing’ the core tenets of Sartre's existentialism. Rather, it is a full-scale, in-your-face presentation of ‘total heroism’: heroism that is flawed, falling far short of the kind of heroism idealized in the annals or mythologies of the so-called ‘red classics’, but it is heroism nonetheless. It is an interrogation, in the fullest sense of the term, of the ‘essence’ of being tested in the crucible of ferocious tortures, and a ‘cruel’ antidote much needed to shock the numbed nerves of the body politic.

Abstract:
This article investigates the cultural politics and identity discourses in the two East Asian reproductions of A Better Tomorrow (1986). Rethinking the power dynamics of a homogenizing transnationalism from a vantage point that is alternative rather than resistant, this article employs a critical approach that is interconnective instead of hierarchical to refocus on the local and the heterogeneous and argues that each remake renegotiates Woo’s cinematic heroism and retools it into the trope for nationhood and identity. The transnational circulation of John Woo’s classical hero narrative traces how heroism and its historical, cultural, political, gender and ideological connotations are renegotiated and reconfigured for unique representational purposes and sociopolitical agendas. As a politically charged, culturally specific and historically circumscribed concept, heroism is deceptively transcendental, in the sense that its definition and expression defy ideological abstraction and cognitive certitude. This elusiveness precludes a consensus on heroism in the remakes; instead, each film contributes to a shifting topography of cinematic heroism mapped by the intricate dynamics of identity, politics and nationhood. Thus, whereas the tragedy of fragmented brotherhood metaphorized, divided and fractured nationhood in Moo-jeok-ja, Tomorrow 2018 propagandized heroism by replacing violence-glorifying brotherhood with nationalist patriotism.

Heroism requires acting altruistically in the face of considerable risk. Professions such as psychology are based on working toward a public good and accordingly provide offsetting privileges for the sacrifices expected. Consequently, psychologists occasionally face professional dilemmas that provide everyday heroic opportunities. Examples of such opportunities during one psychologist’s career path are presented and implications for others in the profession are explored. These are put into the context of heroism as a transpersonal act that can be based on self-expansiveness in which someone goes beyond identifying with their self as an isolated entity and, instead, experiences a sense of interconnectedness with others, the world, and even the cosmos.

In the famous ‘Do I feel lucky’ scene from Dirty Harry (1971), Eastwood's character might not be bluffing, but he is giving luck a role in justice. In this case and others, his character's unconventional responsibility should prompt reconsideration of his character's virtue. Abstract:
The article presents the results of the interdisciplinary philosophical-sociological study of heroism. In the theoretical introductory part, the authors conducted the semiotic analysis of the concept of heroism in the context of the concept of chronotope in Western-European culture; identified the constants of the Russian semantics of the ‘hero’, ‘heroism’ and ‘heroic’; described the dynamics of changes in the meanings of the ‘heroic’, ‘deed’ and ‘feat’. The sociological approach follows the philosophical understanding of heroism and considers this phenomenon through a social relationship (In N.K. Mikhailovsky’s perspective). To comprehend the relationship between the hero and the crowd, the authors refer to such sociological approaches as creative and relational theories of social action and P. Donati’s relational sociology. The empirical part presents the results of the sociological survey of 1,350 Russians from different generations in eight federal districts; thus, the authors consider the concepts of hero and heroism as representations of collective (historical) memory. The empirical study consisted of two parts: the first one focused on the collective memory of Russians and their historical knowledge, the second one - on heroes and heroism in the interpretation of the Soviet and post-Soviet generations. The results of the first part show the general weakening of collective memory, and the events of older history are less interesting and less known than, for example, those of the Soviet period. Most of the significant events in the Russian history are perceived as triumphant, not as traumatic, and most military campaigns, including the current ones, are perceived through the figure of the winner, not the loser. Respondents believe that there was more heroism in the past. Heroism is associated with such personal qualities as strength, activity, a sense of duty, desire to save others not for profit, the ability not to give up even in the most difficult situation. The hero is perceived not only as a savior, but also as a truth-seeker, which is especially significant for Soviet generations.

Abstract:
This article examines the impact of everyday heroism on community in the science fiction novel The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2014) by Becky Chambers. While science fiction often features superhuman action or scientist heroes and technocratic dystopian futures, Chambers’s novel represents the recent trend of hopepunk, which sets stories within mundane social interactions to imagine gradual positive change. Instead of its action-adventure potential, the narrative in Chambers’s novel focuses on the relationships between a multi-species crew of a spaceship, creating a heightened sense of the crew as a found family where individuals come to accept and support each other – and in this way, the story centers around the journey of the community towards equality, inclusion, and hope. I argue that the everyday heroism in the novel is transparent but highly prosocial, overall resulting in a representation of everyday heroism as a way to imagine more hopeful futures.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the values of heroism in the film Salahudin Al Ayyubi using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. Peirce’s semiotic theory divides signs into three main elements: Representamen (the sign itself), Object (what the sign represents), and Interpretant (the meaning derived from the sign). Using a qualitative analysis method, this study identifies visual and narrative symbols that represent heroism in the film. The analysis reveals five key heroic values reflected in the film: sacrifice, courage, responsibility, empathy, and justice. These values are represented through various visual signs, dialogues, and the actions of the main character, as well as events that depict the struggle to uphold justice and truth. The findings of this study indicate that Salahudin Al Ayyubi not only presents a historical and heroic narrative but also conveys profound moral messages through semiotic symbols. Furthermore, this research highlights the importance of semiotic analysis in understanding how heroic values are constructed and perceived by the audience. Thus, this study contributes to film studies and the interpretation of heroism in film media.

Abstract:
In his monumental work, “War and Peace,” Leo Tolstoy boldly confronts the traditional depiction of heroism in the context of war. He meticulously deconstructs the archetype of the flawless leader, replacing it with a diverse ensemble of characters who redefine heroism through their actions, motivations, and in some instances, their pursuit of a meaningful life. This essay delves into Tolstoy’s innovative portrayal of heroism through an array of characters, both historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Mikhail Kutuzov, and fictional personas such as Prince Andrew Bolkonsky, Nicholas Rostov, Feodor Dolokhov, Captain Tushin, Pierre Buzukhov, and Platon Karataev. Tolstoy invites readers to perceive heroism not as grandiose acts or military prowess, but as the quiet strength, resilience, and moral compass exhibited by unsung heroes. The essay explores this theme through a diverse cast of characters, from unassuming soldiers like Captain Tushin to self-serving figures like Dolokhov, and disillusioned idealists like Pierre and Andrei. Contrary to the image of the glory-seeking conqueror, Tolstoy portrays heroism as the right way of being, embodied by ordinary people. The essay argues that true heroes prioritize duty, empathy, and a commitment to a greater purpose. The analysis extends beyond the battlefield, underscoring the heroism of resilience and compassion embodied by the peaceful survivor Platon Karataev. Lastly, the essay scrutinizes the complexities of heroism, acknowledging the imperfections of some heroes and the power of collective action. By dismantling the myth of the infallible leader, “War and Peace” urges us to recognize the various forms heroism can take and to celebrate the unsung heroes who shape our world. This essay encapsulates the essence of Tolstoy’s view of individual character and ethical and religio-philosophical views of individuals by providing a comprehensive overview of its key arguments and themes. Keywords: Leo Tolstoy (the author), Heroism (central concept), Redefinition (how Tolstoy challenges traditional views), Ordinary Individuals (focus on non-traditional heroes), Quiet Strength (inner fortitude over outward displays), Resilience (ability to bounce back from adversity), Empathy (capacity to understand and share feelings), Moral Compass (strong sense of right and wrong), Duty (fulfilling obligations), Greater Purpose (contributing to something larger than oneself), Deconstructing the Myth (breaking down the idea of the infallible leader), UnsungHeroes (those who deserve recognition but are often overlooked), Flaws of Heroes (heroes are not perfect), Collective Action (heroism emerging from a group), War and Peace (the specific literary work analyzed)

Abstract:
In each era, literary creations or works reflect the lives of people. In that aspect, the early literary grammars reflect that love and heroism are two eyes of Tamilians. Sangam literature dating back more than two thousand years, such as Purananuru and Patiruppattu, are historical repositories of wars fought between several kings. These works include the great warriors who defeated many kings and brought many empires under their reign and the charitable leaders who gave charities to those who sought them as the pivotal focus. The sense of valour prevails when reading these creations. The record of heroic deeds that go to war and win rather than love is set to evoke a sense of heroism. Such a record changes the focus over time to convey the potential casualties, material damage, and grief of the division. That is to say that the feeling of pride that was felt at one point turned into the sadness of crying later on. The focus of this article is to analyse the change and the social benefits of such a change.

The Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 entered into force on 13 April 2015. It is too soon for it to have been considered judicially, and it has not yet been subjected to sustained academic analysis. Accordingly, this article considers its impact. In doing so, it situates the Act in its social context and draws attention to the fact that it is part of a large network of statutes that share the same objectives. It is argued, contrary to prevailing views, that parts of the Act change the law. It is also maintained that the Act’s reach is not confined to personal injury cases or even to tort cases. It potentially applies far more widely, including to contractual actions that allege a failure to take reasonable care. In addition to analysing the Act, this article investigates why the legislature might want to restate the common law (which is what the Act does in part), whether replicating the common law is desirable and, if the legislature is bent on restating the common law, how it should go about doing so.

Abstract:
The current social and cultural realities in Ukrainian society, caused by the war with Russia, have increased the interest in the themes of heroes, heroism, and what it means to be heroic. Modern Ukrainian writers are modeling new concepts of heroism, composing them through the lens of war events in Ukraine. This phenomenon requires literary analysis. This article explores the concept of female heroism through the reports in the book “Sisters of Hope” by A. Puścikowska. It focuses on the Christian aspect of heroism, given that the main characters are nuns. The reports depict events from the early stages of Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where the war intertwines with the characters’ daily lives, challenging them and forcing to make moral choices. A significant feature of the heroism shown in “Sisters of Hope” is its integration with everyday life, leading to the adoption of the “Everyday Hero” concept, developed by psychologists J. Ketczer, B. File, G. Orosz, and P. Zimbardo, as the methodological basis of the study. The underscoring the study’s relevance fact is that Ukrainian literary experts have not yet conducted a comprehensive analysis of the everyday heroism concept. The article emphasizes that the actions of the women in “Sisters of Hope” are genuinely heroic. These nuns, though not prominent figures, embody a new form of heroism that transcends the cult of personality. When faced with choices, they are guided not by nationalistic or patriotic beliefs but by a sense of vocation and selfless dedication. Their spiritual and moral ideal is Jesus, and their strength and inner peace derive from faith in God’s protection. The nuns are portrayed as intelligent, educated, and capable, with skills like foreign language proficiency and driving. Their journey’s hardships make them stronger and more resilient, while their unwavering faith in God helps them overcome these challenges. The conclusions note that A. Puścikowska, representing the military events in Ukraine, models the concept of heroism of a woman, which is based on the Christian worldview. Although the nuns are engaged in the conflict, their actions are not driven by militancy but by a mission to save lives, guided by love for humanity and service to God. Future literary studies might focus on a comprehensive examination of thenew heroic figures emerging in the works of contemporary authors.

It has been found that these two factors have a significant positive impact on college students’ sense social responsibility, and the subjective evaluation of college students plays a moderating role in the duration of part-time jobs and their sense of social responsibility.

Abstract:
The article challenges the thesis that western societies have moved towards a post-heroic mood in which military casualties are interpreted as nothing but a waste of life. Using content analysis and qualitative textual analysis of obituaries produced by the Royal Danish Army in memory of soldiers killed during the Second World War (1940–1945) and the military campaign in Afghanistan (2002–2014), the article shows that a ‘good’ military death is no longer conceived of as a patriotic sacrifice, but is instead legitimised by an appeal to the unique moral worth, humanitarian goals and high professionalism of the fallen. The article concludes that fatalities in international military engagement have invoked a sense of post-patriotic heroism instead of a post-heroic crisis, and argues that the social order of modern society has underpinned, rather than undermined, ideals of military self-sacrifice and heroism, contrary to the predominant assumption of the literature on post-heroic warfare.

Abstract:
This study investigated the role of family competence, with mediation by family conflict and moderation by gender, in determining sense of responsibility in young adults. The sample (N = 606) consisted of university students (men = 140, women = 433) with age ranging from 19-25 years (M = 20.70, SD = 1.90). Self- Report Family Inventory II (Beavers & Hampson, 2000) and Personal Responsibility Scale (Mergler, 2016) were used and results indicated a significantly negative relationship between family competence and sense of responsibility, contrary to our hypothesis. However, it was observed that conflict mediates between the effects of family competence on sense of responsibility, and that females score higher on sense of responsibility, both in line with the study’s hypotheses. Gender as a moderator for the effect of family conflict on sense of responsibility presented a significant relationship. Furthermore, the interaction between conflict and gender was significant. The regression model showed a significant direct conditional effect at low levels between competence and sense of responsibility, as well as a significant indirect effect at low and medium levels between competence and sense of responsibility, while a mediated effect at high level can also be observed. Findings can be used for parental awareness regarding the psychological needs of our target demographic.

Abstract:
Background: Exceptional demands have been placed on paramedics and other healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. An overwhelming outpouring of public support has unfolded, bringing into focus the relationship between paramedics, other HCWs and society, where they are portrayed as heroes. Scholars have studied the notion of heroism to society, and characteristics of such heroic status include: the voluntary nature of a heroic act, risk of physical or social harm, willingness to accept the consequences of action, acting for the benefit of others and without the expectation of gain. While some HCWs and paramedics may reflect these characteristics, many may not. Such heroic narratives can be damaging, stifling meaningful discussion around limits to duties, failing to acknowledge the importance of reciprocity and potentially imposing demands on paramedics and HCWs to be heroic.Aim: This article prospectively presents the protocol for a metasynthesis which aims to identify, appraise and synthesise the qualitative literature in order to develop theory on heroism and paramedic practice. Methods: Evolved grounded theory methodology is followed along with the procedural guidelines of Noblit and Hare (1988) to guide the analysis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) have also been adopted when preparing this protocol and will be followed in the study proper. The protocol has been registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO 2021, registration number CRD42021234851.Results: We do not currently have results, but PRISMA guidelines will be followed when reporting our findings. Conclusion: Current narratives on heroism and paramedic practice are important in terms of the relationship between paramedics and society. The metasynthesis prospectively reported in this article serves as the first point in our journey of making sense of and developing theory on heroism and paramedic practice.
