Abstract:
Purpose To establish normal exophthalmometry values in the adult Turkish population, and the impact of age, gender, interpupillary distance, Hertel base selection, and refractive status on globe position. Methods Exophthalmometry measurements and refractive status of 2477 subjects were conducted in one tertiary and five primary health care centers. Change of globe position by age, intersex differences in terms of globe position, correlations of Hertel base with exophthalmometry results, and interpupillary distance (IPD) were evaluated. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to test determination effect of each variable on final Hertel reading. Results Median Hertel reading was 13 mm, and 95% of the population had an upper limit of 17 mm for both eyes. There was a negative correlation between spherical equivalent of refractive status and exophthalmometry results and a weak positive correlation between IPD and exophthalmometry result. Mean Hertel value was found to decrease significantly after the third decade. Hertel base value was found to have moderate linear correlation with Hertel results. A weak correlation was detected with Hertel base/IPD ratio with final Hertel results. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed and only 13% and 20% of change in Hertel values bilaterally were found to be determined by other variables (age, IPD, refractive status, and Hertel base value) for females and males. Conclusions Normative dataset for exophthalmometry results of the Turkish population is established to be used in clinical practice and research. Only 13% to 20% of change in Hertel values was detected to be determined by age, IPD and Hertel base values.

Abstract:
AbstractEight new species of Lecideaceae are described from the southern subpolar region: Bryobilimbia coppinsiana Fryday, a saxicolous species with one septate ascospores (Campbell Island, New Zealand); Immersaria fuliginosa Fryday, with a thallus composed of thalloconidia (Falkland Islands); Lecidea aurantia Fryday, with an orange thallus (Auckland Islands, New Zealand); L. campbellensis Fryday, with an endolithic thallus and apothecia resembling those of a species of Porpidia (Campbell Island); Poeltiaria ochyrae Hertel, which is similar to P. subincongua but with a thick areolate thallus (South Orkney and South Shetland Islands); P. tasmanica Fryday, which is similar to P. urbanskyana but with smaller ascopores (Tasmania); Poeltidea inspersa Fryday with an enolithic thallus and a hymenium with large oil globules (Falkland Islands); and Porpidia vulcanoides Hertel & Fryday with immersed apothecia with a thick margin and large ascospores (SW Chile). Lecidea kalbii Hertel is resurrected from the synonymy of L. mannii Tuck. and treated as a distinct species. The circumscription of genera within the Lecideaceae is also discussed: Poeltiaria is shown to be heterogeneous, and the genera Labyrintha and Notolecidea are reduced to synonymy with Poeltidea and Poeltiaria respectively, and the new combinations Poeltidia implexa (Malcolm et al.) Hertel & Fryday and Poeltiaria subcontinua (Hertel) Hertel & Fryday made. A key to the genera of Lecideaceae s. lat. is provided.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Clinical evaluation of proptosis is measured by an exophthalmometer. Hertel exophthalmometer has long been considered a standard instrument for measurement of eye protrusion. The reading may be subject to error while the examiners read through the integral reflection mirrors. Luedde exophthalmometer, which is a ruler correcting for parallax, is easier to use and less expensive than Hertel exophthalmometer. Since CT scan of orbits or brain provides the most objective assessment of proptosis measurements, we aim to study the correlation between Luedde and Hertel exophthalmometers in comparison with the CT scan for the evaluation of proptosis in normal subjects. Methods This prospective study was carried out between November 2020 and January 2021. Sixty-three patients were enrolled from a single tertiary hospital. All patients underwent CT scan of brain for medical reasons. On the same day, proptosis was measured with Hertel and Dual Luedde exophthalmometer by two independent examiners. Measurement of proptosis from CT scan was performed by one experienced neuroradiologist, using 2 reference measurement techniques. Correlation coefficients between proptosis values measured by each exophthalmometer and CT scan were compared. Results The mean age of the participants was 63 years old and 54% were female. For the right eye, mean proptosis measurement was 14.9+/-1.6 mm by Hertel exophthalmometer, 14.1+/-2.3mm by Luedde exophthalmometer, 16.6+/-2.3 mm by first CT technique, and 13.1 +/- 2.2 mm by second CT technique. For the left eye, mean proptosis measurement was 15.5 +/-1.5mm by Hertel exophthalmometer, 13.7+/-2.3 mm by Luedde exophthalmometer, 16.6+/-2.3 mm by first CT technique and 13.1 +/- 2.2 mm by second CT technique. The Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of Hertel exophthalmometer for proptosis measurement compared to first CT technique and second CT technique were 0.63 and 0.60 for right eye; 0.61 and 0.55 for left eye, respectively. The ICC of Luedde exophthalmometer for proptosis measurement compared to first CT technique and second CT technique were 0.78 and 0.74 for right eye; 0.77 and 0.74 for left eye, respectively. Conclusion There is a good correlation between Hertel and Luedde exophthalmometers in evaluation of proptosis. However, proptosis measured by Luedde exophthalmometer shows superior correlation with CT scan. The result suggests that Luedde exophthalmometer can be routinely used for measurement of proptosis in place of Hertel exophthalmometer, given the simplicity and the inexpensiveness of the instrument. Abstract:
There is no truth to delimit in the event. Events come, if ever they arrive, to designate fields of pure possibility and emergent futurity. Consider one old tale of “diverse aventures” (V.710), Chaucer’s Franklin’s Tale.1 Somewhere in Brittany, Dorigen is happily married to the knight Arveragus, having recently pledged her undying love. “Have heer my trouthe — til that myn herte breste” (V.759). Soon he goes on an expedition abroad. Dorigen watches ships come to port in the hopes that one will return her husband safely, and she is tormented by thoughts of his foundering. Dorigen cultivates a “derke fantasye” (V.844), meditating on the hazards of a seascape that consists of “grisly rokkes blake” (V.859) just offshore. They are menacing and apparently meaningless obstacles to her happiness. She cannot shake bleak thoughts of a possible fatality, despite friends’ comforting words and pleasant distractions. Then something unexpected does happen. At a dance, the amorous squire Aurelius propositions Dorigen, begging her mercy. She rejects his advances, tactfully couching her reply in terms that are described as playful: shesays she will yield to Aurelius only if he removes thedangerous rocks that threaten her beloved husband. “Have heer my trouthe, in al that evere I kan” (V.998). It would seem impossible. But Dorigen’s so-called rash promise to Aureliusis a fateful utterance carried away by further events, accompanied by a powerful sense of foreboding, setting in motion so many impossibilities. Dorigen and expectantreaders of the tale subsequently drift towards a future of still more improbable events.

Abstract:
Abstract Shaped charge jets (SCJs) are of interest in the field of ballistics because of their excellent penetration ability. The various characteristics of an SCJ, such as density, temperature and length of the jet, are important when estimating the expected penetration depth. Therefore, these characteristics have been widely researched [1-5]. Zernow studied the density deficit associated with an in-flight jet using densitometry [1]. This prior work determined that the 15-20% density deficit of a Cu jet (as reported by Jamet [2]) includes a temperature contribution of 3.5%, an experimental error of 5% and a so-called “vacancy avalanche” contribution of 6.5%. Uhlig and Hummer measured the conductivity and temperature of in-flight Cu SCJs by employing a novel magnetic diffusion technique and five color radiometry. The resulting conductivity values indicated that the tip of the SCJ had a bulk temperature on the order of 1200 K, which is in the vicinity of the melting point of Cu (1350 K) [3]. Hertel et al. developed an analytical model for the SCJ formation process. CTH calculations utilizing their analytical model accurately predicted the thermodynamic characteristics of the SCJ [4, 5]. Huang quantified the density of an SCJ and reported the density distribution based on evaluating the x-ray absorption coefficient of a metal jet [6], and found that the density of a powder metal jet decreases toward the jet tip as the jet elongates. These prior reports indicate that observations of various jet features under high temperature conditions (close to the melting point) can be a useful means of assessing the density deficit of an SCJ.

Abstract:
Huff and Hertel (2001) derive a welfare decomposition for the equivalent variation in the GTAP model. The derivation appears to be very specific to GTAP. Nevertheless, it contains nearly all the ingredients required for performing welfare decomposition for any CGE model. In this paper, the approach of Huff and Hertel (2001) is generalised to derive a welfare decomposition that can be applied to most, if not all, CGE models. General production and utility functions are accommodated, as are foreign income flows. A brief guide to coding the proposed welfare decomposition in GEMPACK is also provided. The decomposition is applied to decomposing the equivalent variation in GTAP.

Abstract:
The land-use augmented version of the GTAP Data Base has been used for a wide variety of applications (Hertel, Rose, & Tol, 2009). The original GTAP-AEZ database incorporated geospatial data on land use into the version 6 GTAP Data Base, with a benchmark year of 2001. The methodology for integrating this information into the GTAP-AEZ framework is documented by Lee et al. (2009). This database has been updated for 2004 using the version 7 GTAP Data Base, national-level crop production data from FAOSTAT and updated time-series data on cropland and pasture cover developed by Navin Ramankutty (2011). For version 7, the original geospatial data on crop production circa 2000 from Monfreda et al. (2008) was used since updates for this data are currently unavailable. This memorandum documents how the land use data has been updated for use in the version 8 data base. In keeping with the multi-year release of v.8, the Land Use Data Base is updated to two base years: 2004 and 2007. This update heavily relies on the methods outlined by Avetisyan, Baldos and Hertel (2010), but there are some changes in sources and procedures, as will become evident in the comparisons of the v.7-2004 and v.8-2004 data bases.

Abstract:
Understanding the challenges of achieving environmental sustainability goals given future demand for food, fiber and fuel requires economic frameworks that incorporate spatially explicit information on land use and land cover (LULC). The GTAP LULC Data Base and its variants have been extensively used in a wide variety of applications aimed at examining the land-environment-energy nexus (Golub et al., 2012; Hertel et al., 2010; Johnson et al., 2019; Liu et al., 2014; Peña-Lévano et al., 2019; Stevenson et al., 2013; Taheripour et al., 2010; Taheripour & Tyner, 2012). The first release of the GTAP LULC Data Base combines geospatial data on land use and land cover into GTAP 6 Data Base – benchmarked to year 2001 (GTAP LULC v6). The methodology for creating and using this database is well documented (Lee et al., 2009; C. Monfreda et al., 2009; Sohngen et al., 2008). Succeeding updates of the GTAP LULC Data Base (namely v7 and v8 for 2004 and v8 for 2004, 2007) relied on readily available but aggregated GTAP LULC v6, albeit using national-level data from FAOSTAT (2020) (Avetisyan et al., 2010; Baldos & Hertel, 2012). Starting with GTAP 9, LULC was created directly from the latest, high-resolution (i.e. 5-minute) spatial land cover and land use maps in combination with national-level statistics (Baldos, 2017). This memorandum documents the development of the GTAP LULC version10A which is based on the GTAP v10A Data Base for years 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2014 (Aguiar et al., 2019). This update heavily relies on the methodology for creating GTAP LULC v9 which downscales national-level land cover and crop production statistics from FAOSTAT (2020) using publicly available spatial data (see Appendix I).
