One of America's most noted contemporary novelists, John Irving has created a body of fiction of extraordinary range, moving with ease from romance to fairytale to thriller. Although his fiction follows in the tradition of the great 19th-century world novelists, he is a quintessential American writer—his novels are laced with broad humor, farce, and absurd situations. He does not hesitate to tackle the troubling issues that have faced our nation in the past few decades, such as war, racism, sexism, abortion, violence, and AIDS. This chapter focuses on the issue of schools aligning their budgets and decision making with their communicated priorities. The author specifically focuses on international schools' communicated commitment to inclusion and questions whether decision-making and budgets align with that communicated commitment. The author reviews possible reasons that international school leaders do not commit more of their budget to inclusion and why some international schools are still hesitant to accept a broader range of students with neurodivergence. The reasons include financial impact, concern about effects on academic rigor and performance, and leaders not having the necessary data to feel confident to defend inclusion in their school communities. The author argues for the positive impacts of more inclusion, which include improved social-emotional growth for all students, high academic achievement for all students, and a positive financial impact on school budgets. The author provides guidance to leaders looking to expand inclusion in their school communities.

This chapter reviews the Covid-19 pandemic through the lens of the international law regime of the International Health Regulations (IHR) of 2005. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) can claim some success in having worked with countries in Asia to build their capacity to respond to a pandemic, some of the countries that have been the most successful in containing the spread of Covid-19 did so despite the WHO’s hesitant response. The difficulty is that cumbersome IHR process of evaluating the threat posed by an outbreak and sounding the general alarm. This process enabled China to control the initial flow of information regarding the outbreak until such time as the WHO was able work through a cumbersome process and belatedly declare a “public health emergency of international concern.” The chapter then argues that a key element of combatting a pandemic is compliance with international law and the need to strengthen its regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract In order to start peer review successfully and to run it smoothly, it is not enough to have a good programme, acceptable guidelines, and feasible evaluation tools. Certain conditions should be fulfilled to make the peer review process into a fruitful and valuable experience for the participants. These conditions are concerned with Research has indicated that general practitioners and practices are on the one hand motivated and on the other hand hesitant to partake in peer review on several grounds (Grol 1987). On the whole, care providers in general practice work on their own and are accountable only partly to others. This was largely the case in British general practice until recently, although the recent emphasis on audit has made peer review within group practice much more common. Participation in peer review gives colleagues the opportunity to take a peep behind the curtains and to offer their criticism. It goes without saying, that this may evoke fear and resistance. Participants may be frightened of being made a fool of in front of others, frightened that weak points will be brought to light, or that they will be branded as bad GPs. Or they may be convinced that no forms of criticism can ever take place objectively and fairly. In some cases, there may be a certain reluctance when it comes to criticizing others.
