This thesis covers three important aspects of Antarctic heterobranchs: ecology, taxonomy, and systematics. The first section deals with ecological interactions of several nudibranchs. In Chapter 1, we chemically characterize a new natural product (a homosesterterpene) called granuloside, from Charcotia granulosa Vayssière, 1906; remarkably, this is the first record of this type of compound in marine organisms. In Chapter 2, we assess the origin, function, and distribution of granuloside in this nudibranch; we found glandular structures probably responsible for storing granuloside, as a defensi

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the aquaculture potential of a hybrid between the two largest African silurid catfish, Heterobranchus longifilis (HL) and Clarias gariepinus (CG) . A morphometric, meristic and karyological study showed that the hybrid shared some of the physical characteristics of both C. gariepinus and H. longifilis, while its chromosome complement and fundamental number (2N = 54, FN = 95), was intermediate between that of H. longifilis (2N = 52, FN = 92) and C. gariepinus (2N = 56, FN = 97). The HLxCG cross could therefore be regarded as a true hybrid. For the character

Abstract:
My research tested hypotheses about the evolutionary origin of a novel feature by modification of development. The novelty is the growing larval shell of gastropod molluscs, which emerged when gastropod larvae acquired the ability to feed. One hypothesis states that the growing larval shell in the Heterobranchia is a continuation of the embryonic phase of shell secretion. The second hypothesis states that the larval shell in the Caenogastropoda may be a precocious juvenile shell. These hypotheses implicate heterochrony. To test these hypotheses, I examined ultrastructural features of the shell

Abstract:
Larval development of Berthella californica, a pleurobranchoidean heterobranch from the Northeastern Pacific, is described using histological sectioning, SEM, TEM, and immunolabelling. Current phylogenetic hypotheses place the Pleurobranchoidea as sister to all nudibranchs, or as sister to only the anthobranch nudibranchs. Deciding between these alternatives is difficult due to extensive homoplasy among heterobranchs. Analysis of larval morphology may help resolve this issue by identifying additional phylogenetically informative characters. Larval development has been well documented for many
