Heterocyclic ring systems of the 6,5,5 azoloindole type have been found to have potential applications in colour photography as magenta dye couplers. The work described here has involved using flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) as a novel synthetic route to these tricyclic systems and structurally related tetracyclics. With new disconnections involving a key FVP stage, synthesis of complex ring systems can be reduced to as little as two or three steps, giving a significant advantage over more conventional synthetic routes. Various 3-substituted isoquinolin-4-ols have been successfully synthesised by two different methodologies. Treatment of isoquinoline <i>N</i>-oxide with <i>p</i>-toluenesulfonyl chloride, provided 4-(<i>p</i>-toluenesulfonyloxy) isoquinoline in 30% yield and high purity <i>via </i>rearrangement of an intermediate <i>N</i>-(<i>p</i>-toluenesulfonyloxy) compound. A comprehensive series of triphenylmethane dyes has been synthesised in which the phenyl ring of Malachite Green has been replaced by a 5- or 6- membered heterocycle containing nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur as hetetâacoins. The visible absorption spectra of the dyes have been correlated with the electronic and structural features of the molecules. Routes to novel heterocyclic azo compounds and components of use as potential inkjet dyes were investigated. A new route to fluorenones from biphenyl acid chlorides using FVP (Flash Vacuum Pyrolysis) has been discovered. Fluorenone and 4-methylfluoren-9-one were prepared by FVP of 2-phenylbenzoyl chloride and 2-methylbiphenyl-2-carbonyl chloride respectively. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of YD2 is 11%, hence we use YD2 as the main structure and modify the substituents of phenyl rings on the porphyrins. Long alkoxyl chains instead of tert-butyls were connected to the ortho positions of meso-phenyl groups to avoid the aggregation of porphyrin molecules and the contact between electrolyte and porphyrins. The devices made from co-adsorption of YD2-o-C8 and the organic dye Y123 achieves a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 12.3%.

A solar cell sensitized with CBTR provided values of Jsc, Voc and η of 20.0 mAcm-2, 730 mV and 9.69 %, respectively, under AM 1.5 irradiation (100 mWcm-2); this performance exceeds that obtained using the traditional N719 dye (Jsc = 18.6 mAcm-2; Voc = 700 mV; η = 8.98 %).
