Abstract:
Heterogeneous data with different characteristics are ubiquitous in the modern digital world. For example, the observations collected from a process may change on its mean or variance. In numerous applications, data are often of mixed types including both discrete and continuous variables. Heterogeneity also commonly arises in data when underlying models vary across different segments. Besides, the underlying pattern of data may change in different dimensions, such as in time and space. The diversity of heterogeneous data structures makes statistical modeling and analysis challenging. Detecti

This thesis presents a research project in the field of oxygen system fire safety relating to the heterogeneous burning of iron in normal gravity and reduced gravity. Fires involving metallic components in oxygen systems often occur, with devastating and costly results, motivating continued research to improve the safety of these devices through a better understanding of the burning phenomena. Metallic materials typically burn in the liquid phase, referred to as heterogeneous burning.

Abstract:

This thesis is composed of two parts, that relate to both parallel and heterogeneous processing. The first describes DistCL, a distributed OpenCL framework that allows a cluster of GPUs to be programmed like a single device. It uses programmer-supplied meta-functions that associate work-items to memory. DistCL achieves speedups of up to 29x using 32 peers. By comparing DistCL to SnuCL, we determine that the compute-to-transfer ratio of a benchmark is the best predictor of its performance scaling when distributed. The second is a statistical power model for the AMD Fusion heterogeneous processo

Abstract:
1 Introduction In this doctoral thesis, we address several representative problems that arise in the context of learning from multiple heterogeneous agents. These problems are relevant to many modern applications such as crowdsourcing and internet advertising. In scenarios such as crowdsourcing, there is a planner who is interested in learning a task and a set of noisy agents provide the training data for this learning task. Any learning algorithm making use of the data provided by these noisy agents must account for their noise levels. The noise levels of the agents are unknown to the planne
