Abstract:
En respuesta a la crítica realizada por Caren Kaplan al exilio modernista, este artículo reutiliza la teoría bajtiniana como un instrumento para comprender el cruce de fronteras y la ruptura de barreras joyceanas como formas de centrifugalidad. El trabajo también cuestiona si un novelista al que Bajtín ignoró podría haber producido la máxima expresión de los propios ideales de representación novelística de su obra: dialógico, carnavalesco, multicronotópico, corpocéntrico y lingo-culturalmente interestratificado. Para avanzar en este argumento, el principal concepto bajtiniano de heteroglosia se expande más allá de su ámbito original, intranovelista, para describir tanto las energías como las tensas complejidades del exilio como motor del arte modernista. Una propuesta de eje teórico que vincula el exilio, la heteroglosia y el formalismo ruso conduce a una discusión sobre la obscenidad como un objeto centrífugo y estético para Joyce: la suciedad por amor al arte. Y esto a su vez conduce a un análisis de los distintos niveles de representación interestratificadas en Ulysses como una forma de heteroglosia cuyo poder depende tanto del elemento exílico como del elemento afectivo. Finalmente, este artículo demuestra que Ulysses, como un alejamiento radical del lenguaje estándar y centrípeto de sus primeras novelas, representa la quintaesencia de la heteroglosia novelística, no sólo en su estilo sino también en términos espaciales: los de las fuerzas centrífugas y mutantes representadas por sus viajes por el mundo y la imagen exílica de su creador.

Nuestro lenguaje común es polifonía —afirma Martha Lavey (2004: xi)— aunque constantemente estamos buscando ese lenguaje común que perdimos cuando se derrumbó la Torre de Babel. El objeto de este estudio, la obra de teatro contemponáneo sueca Utvandrarna, confirma la cita anterior. En Utvandrarna la heteroglosia juega un papel muy importante en relación con una serie de narraciones que el público está invitado a construir en la representación. Cuando la obra se representaba en diferentes lugares de Finlandia, el sobretitulado se hizo necesario con mayor frecuencia que en las representaciones suecas (dirigidas a un público que hablaba sueco) para facilitar la comprensión del discurso y, por tanto, la construcción de las narraciones. El propósito del presente trabajo es estudiar el uso e importancia de la heteroglosia y de la alternancia de códigos, tanto en la caracterización (auditiva) como en la escenografía (visual) que conforman la experiencia teatral completa.

La poesía, en su análisis, se ha visto por lo general excluida de elementos como el dialogismo, la heteroglosia o la polifonía, todos ellos presentados por el teórico ruso Mijail Bajtin (1895-1975) en la primera mitad del siglo XX y atribuidos desde entonces a la novela. Me propongo en este ensayo valerme precisamente de dichos recursos para analizar dos poemas de El Mickey Mouse de la noche, obra del poeta japonés Shuntarô Tanikawa (1931-), con el objetivo de retribuir a la poesía la capacidad dialógica que se le ha negado durante largo tiempo al circunscribirla al universo particular y cerrado del hablante lírico.

Este artículo aborda distintas funciones de la metáfora gramatical en los patrones argumentativos de textos académicos de antropología y sociología. El análisis se realiza desde las perspectivas teórico-metodológicas de la Lingüística Sistémico Funcional, en particular desde algunos recursos ideacionales y textuales. El análisis revela que la metáfora ideacional (experiencial y lógica) construye un lenguaje especializado en las disciplinas a través de taxonomías y empaquetamiento de información. En sus explicaciones los autores utilizan recursos del lenguaje, para construir abstracción y generalización, en los que tienden a acoplar significados ideacionales e interpersonales, generando textos con densidad semántica y heteroglosia.

En los últimos años se han producido cambios jurídicos que buscan un nuevo trato hacia la comunidad LGBTI (lesbianas, gay, bisexuales, transexuales e intersexuales) en Chile. Sin embargo, la discusión sobre el Matrimonio Igualitario sigue entrampada tanto en el debate legislativo como en la opinión pública. Desde la perspectiva del modelo de VALORACIÓN (Martin y White, 2005), se busca revelar los posicionamientos ideológicos de quienes promueven dicha ley y de quienes son sus detractores a través del análisis de dos cartas al director. Entre los principales resultados se puede mencionar la marcada contraposición de los recursos de monoglosia y heteroglosia en los textos en contra y a favor del Matrimonio Igualitario.

Entre tradiciones y procesos de transformación, asistimos a una poética del pensar del poema extenso en las Antillas hispanas. Desde la “décima”, venida de Europa, se desarrolla una creatividad lingüística por medio de una apertura pragmática, en estrecha relación con la particularidad colonial: entre mito del progreso y mito de la edad de oro. Para entender la inventiva caribeña, recordamos la práctica del Neobarroco, elaborado a base de las confluencias de lo heterogéneo. Vemos como a través de una heteroglosia discursiva, el poema extenso se asienta en este espacio cultural que son las islas antillanas y subrayamos su papel actual en el relato de historias mínimas que alimentan por otro cariz la historia universal.

El presente artículo revisa el concepto de compromiso desde la Teoría de la Valoración propuesta por Martin y White y de algunas de sus aplicaciones pedagógicas. Desde la perspectiva bajtiniana de dialogismo, Martin y White definen el compromiso como el conjunto de recursos mediante los cuales los usuarios del lenguaje entran en diálogo con las múltiples voces que inevitablemente permean sus textos, aceptándolas, rebatiéndolas, retomándolas o distanciándose de ellas. El compromiso se divide en dos tipos: monoglosia y heteroglosia. Este último se desagrega en varias subcategorías, que son definidas e ilustradas con ejemplos tomados del corpus del español de Davies. Consideramos algunas aplicaciones pedagógicas del concepto de compromiso mediante la revisión de estudios desarrollados principalmente en el contexto latinoamericano.

Para ello, analizaremos las ideas y discursos que apoyan o refutan posturas hegemónicas y contrahegemónicas dentro del proceso de recuperación lingüística utilizando la teoría del sociolingüista gallego José del Valle mediante la contraposición que es­tablece entre las culturas de la monoglosia y de la heteroglosia, lo cual supone una novedad para entender el marco conceptual de la realidad lingüística leonesa dentro de esta disciplina.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p class="Pa8">The present article intends to elaborate on the history of the modern recovery of Leonese as well as contributing to the field of sociolinguistics through an analysis of the linguistic ideologies of the associations –cur­rently active or in the past– involved in its protection. En el siguiente trabajo analizamos el fenómeno discursivo de la ventriloquización aclarando, en primer lugar, la relación y distinción entre el concepto polifonía y otros cercanos como dialogismo, heteroglosia y dialéctica. A partir de la revisión diacrónica del concepto, estudiamos las facetas del hablante y las situaciones comunicativas que intervienen en los diferentes discursos polifónicos, diferenciando cuatro tipos de emisiones polifónicas: 1) discurso referido, 2) enunciados ecoicos, 3) intertextos y 4) ventriloquización. Presentamos una descripción detallada de las principales características de la ventriloquización (mímesis, enriquecimiento semántico, posible cambio de voz –timbre y entonación–, función lingüística predominante y recontextualización). Por último, atendiendo a los dos tipos de ventriloquización (real y simulada), proponemos una clasificación de usos frecuentes a partir de cuatro factores relacionados con los agentes comunicativos.

Abstract The present study supports the idea of heteroglossia and its contributions to language learning in second language acquisition (SLA) theory and bilingualism. Bakhtin’s (1934/1981) theory of heteroglossia differs from variety and register in that when acquiring a language, one internalizes the voices of others. Viewing interlanguage through a heteroglossic lens, it is possible that these voices in heteroglossia may have an effect on second language (L2) users’ language production. By blending sociolinguistic and sociocultural frameworks, this study analyzed the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of two French-English bilinguals’ narratives. Findings demonstrate a clear shift in all three measures of the CAF framework when participants enacted the voice of a perceived interlocutor or perceived self, versus when they recounted a narrative. These findings support the notion that an individual may have variable linguistic systems, and raise other important theoretical and practical implications for SLA research and L2 instruction.

En este artículo se afirma que la Crítica textual es el medio que facilita la comunicación entre texto y lector; materializada en el trabajo del editor crítico. El objetivo es la presentación y exposición de la solución al problema metodológico suscitado en el interior de las discusiones del grupo de investigación alrededor del tratamiento de las voces relacionadas con la oralidad en las obras objetos de estudio. Los métodos y materiales son fundamentados en la Ecdótica, y las teorías del círculo de Mijaíl Bajtín, ambos frentes aplicados a la construcción de una variante denominada “Heteroglosia” para un conjunto de diez cuentos publicados los miércoles y sábados por primera vez entre 1907 y 1931, especialmente, en “El rifle”. Los resultados por medio de la colación permitieron establecer como los diálogos en algunos pasajes textuales revelan la condición social de los personajes por lo que deben seguir los deseos editoriales del autor consignados en el texto base seleccionado.

The translation of multicultural poetry is as challenging as it is creative. In this verse, meaning is transmitted through a defiance of norms, firstly because poetry is a genre that strives for verbal concision and innovation; and secondly because the multilingual poet involves another language —either in its original form or as a translation into the language of composition—to enhance sound and cultural imagery. In order to translate this type of poetry, it is necessary to analyze traditional translations of multicultural literature to establish what the reader’s expectations are, if any, regarding this writing technique. Also, as implicit translations embedded within the lines create a tangible heteroglossia, this element must be considered and conveyed as such in the new version. In this study, the ideas on polylingualism in literature discussed by Mikhail Bakhtin, Meir Steinberger, Walter Mignolo, and Paul Bandia are first weighed, and then an examination of the actual Spanish versions of U.S. Latino poetry published in Usos de la imaginación: poesía de l@s latin@s en EE.UU helps crystallize the problems and strategies involved in the translation of multicultural literature. La traducción de la poesía multicultural es una tarea tan desafiante como creativa. En esta lírica, se transmite el sentido a través de un cuestionamiento de las normas, primero porque la poesía es un género que busca la concisión verbal y la innovación; segundo porque el poeta multicultural involucra otra lengua—en su forma original o como traducción a la lengua de composición—para enriquecer las imágenes sonoras y culturales. Para traducir este tipo de poesía, es necesario investigar modos tradicionales de traducir la literatura multicultural para así establecer cuáles son, si existen, las expectativas de lectura. También, ya que las traducciones implícitas crean una heteroglosia tangible, hay que considerar este factor y transmitirlo en la nueva versión. En este estudio, se examina las ideas sobre el uso de polilingüismo en la literatura expuestas por Mikhail Bakhtin, Meir Steinberger, Walter Mignolo y Paul Bandi, y luego se analizan las traducciones al castellano de poesía latina realizadas para el libro Usos de la imaginación: poesía de l@s latin@s en EE.UU para llegar a una cristalización de los problemas y posibles soluciones para la traducción de la literatura multicultural.

This article explores the tensions between ‘doing gender’ and ‘doing popular music’ within the context of informal popular music learning for one group of girls of age 12–14 in a Southwestern Ontario elementary school. Using the transposition of Bakhtin’s concepts of monoglossia and heteroglossia to the performance of gender, the authors explore how members of Group G, an all-girl popular music band, perform heteroglossic gender behaviours, even while maintaining and presenting an outwardly monoglossic performance of gender in other respects. Furthermore, we explore how aspects of the girls’ behaviours vacillated between traditional gendered discourses and traditional discourses of popular music. Finally, findings suggest that the girls of Group G may not have been deliberately transgressive in their performances of gender but that they may have produced heteroglossic gender performances as part of a process of exploring their own identities. We conclude by considering the informal popular music classroom as a space that may be conducive or constricting towards the possibilities of heteroglossic gender performances and the need for a broadening of pedagogies of popular music that take into consideration both gender and power as it relates to gender.

RESUMEN Este artículo se propone relevar el lugar asignado por Mijaíl Bajtín a las relaciones entre el tiempo del enunciado y el tiempo de la comunicación discursiva. Los conceptos de conciencia, intención, creatividad ideológica y comprensión acuden a la delimitación de otros, estructurantes y decisivos, como el del tiempo de la interacción estratégica. La perspectiva dialógica de abordaje de la cultura popular nos sugiere aún discutir sobre la relación que se establece en el espacio semiótico agónico abierto entre dos dominios: lo ideológico y el tiempo de lo ideológico. La heteroglosia designa un campo de interacción de voces con proyectos estratégicos. Reconocerlo implica asumir la voz de la cultura popular como interactuante con otras voces en el tiempo de la lucha por la significación ideológica. La fecundidad del debate nunca consumado sobre el sujeto histórico del discurso nos invita a poner en tensión la noción de transformación con aquello que Balandier denomina estrategias de inversión. Exploramos, de esta forma, las preocupaciones de índole sociológica que atraviesan las reflexiones bajtinianas sobre el texto y el enunciado.

Within the framework of the Engagement System of Appraisal Theory, this thesis investigates the heteroglossia of the reasoning of criminal judgments of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and examines their similarities and differences in the employment of heteroglossic engagement resources and underlying causes. The reasoning of 20 criminal judgments of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong produced upon second instance for the same cause of action are collected and built as two separate corpora to carry out the study. It is found that judges of both Chinese mainland and Hong Kong employ various heteroglossic engagement resources to locate position and negotiate with other voices while proceeding with reasoning. Furthermore, they share some similarities in the selection of subtypes of engagement resources, which is attributed to the fact that they hold similar communicative purposes in the reasoning of judicial judgments; while the differences can be interpreted from the distinct legal doctrines in the mainland and Hong Kong and the textual structure of the reasoning of criminal judgments.

In this special issue, we build on Bauman's seminal observation about performance, that ‘the act of expression is put on display, objectified, marked out to a degree from its discursive surrounding and opened up to interpretive scrutiny and evaluation by an audience’ (2000:1). More recently, scholars have moved to examining the performative role of heteroglossia, that is, the use of multiply sourced, semiotic (verbal and nonverbal) forms. In particular, this line of research has shown how attention to heteroglossic performances and their local interpretations can illuminate the subtle politics of dominant and nondominant identities in different ethnographic contexts. This is particularly true of what Coupland (2007) calls ‘high performances’, which, as Bell & Gibson (2011:558) write, are privileged sites for allowing participants to indexically associate expressive forms with social personae. Thus, while all performances are inherently reflexive, heteroglossic performances particularly amplify that reflexivity with respect to their multiple frames, voices, and stances that they presuppose and establish.

Our ethnographic action research case study addresses the unique concerns that arise when expanding bilingual education methods within teacher education for non-ESL preservice teachers concerning ideological and practice-based shifts in pedagogy. The conceptual framework connects language ideologies and pedagogical practices. The qualitative analyses of three key assignments document preservice teachers’ ideological leanings as tending toward heteroglossia, tending toward monoglossia, or ideologies in flux. Our findings illustrate the attempts by preservice teachers to engage in practices along continua of heteroglossic and monoglossic language ideologies and the importance of defining concrete practices that value bilingual community knowledge.

This paper contributes to a recent development in Applied Linguistics that encourages research from trans- approaches. Drawing on the results of an ethnographic research project carried out in a university of Bangladesh. It is illustrated how young adults actively and reflexively use a mixture of codes, modes, genres, and popular cultural texts in their language practices within the historical and spatial realities of their lives. The paper shows that the interpretive capacity of heteroglossia increases when complemented by an understanding derived from transgressive approaches to language. The paper proposes a reconceptualised version of heteroglossia, namely transglossia, which explores the fixity and fluidity of language in the 21th Century. On the one hand, transglossia is a theoretical framework that addresses the transcendence and transformation of meaning in heteroglossic voices. On the other hand, a transglossic framework untangles the social, historical, political, ideological, and spatial realities within which voices emerge. Overall, it is suggested that transglossia and a transglossic framework can provide us with an understanding of language that notions such as code-mixing or code-switching or any language-centric analysis fail to unveil.

Mientras que, por un lado, solicita las categorías de Marx para dar cuenta del fenómeno reciente de la crisis del capitalismo neoliberal; al mismo tiempo, reconoce que esa teoría no puede decirlo todo, requiriendo de un acercamiento de su perspectiva hacia objetos y problemas ajenos, acaso obstruidos por los límites al interior de los cuales se habría desplazado su pensamiento. Una de las fuentes de inspiración más poderosas de este movimiento de ampliación cuyo saldo no es sino una verdadera heteroglosia filosófica, se encuentra en la teoría del espíritu del idealismo alemán, más precisamente en sus modulaciones hegelianas. El regreso a Hegel vendría motivado por la necesidad de indagar, como se observa en la obra de Axel Honneth, en los dilemas de los vínculos humanos en un mundo social signado por el fenómeno de la fragmentación. En este escrito nos detendremos en analizar algunos elementos de un reciente debate al interior de la Teoría Crítica contemporánea acerca del problema de la articulación entre reconocimiento y libertad, reconstruyendo las distintas estrategias de lectura de Hegel que aquí se ponen en movimiento.

The five articles in this issue examine how children, in naturally occurring school and neighborhood peer and sibling-kin groups across a variety of cultures and societies, socialize one another to do heteroglossia, drawing upon a diverse repertoire of linguistic and discursive forms in their everyday cultural practices. Through the use of ethnographic techniques for recording natural conversations, they demonstrate how children, in their peer play interactions, make use of and juxtapose multiple linguistic and cultural resources at their disposal in linguistically diverse and stratified settings. The analyses provide detailed insights into children’s heteroglossic verbal practices (Bakhtin 1981, 1986), that is, their use and differentiation of multiple codes and registers in the creation and negotiation of social distinctions. Bakhtin’s concept of heteroglossia addresses the dialogic relationship between multiple and sometimes conflicting codes or registers and the larger socio-political and socio-historical meanings that are negotiated through those linguistic forms. In particular, the concept refers to tensions between the multiplicities of language varieties within a national language, which are drawing it towards a standard central version, and those that are moving away from national standards through hybrid linguistic forms of official and unofficial languages. Research on heteroglossia entails an examination of how speakers indexically hail socio-historical tensions and contradictions in situated instances of language use that result in the regimentation of codes and associated notions of collective membership and personhood (Blommaert & Verschueren 1998; Hill & Hill 1986; Kroskrity 2000; Pujolar 2001; Schieffelin 1994; Silverstein 2003; Woolard 1998, 1999). Bailey (2007) recently remarked that much of the sociolinguistic and discourse analytic work on code-switching and other so-called syncretistic discourse practices are productively reinterpreted through the prism of heteroglossia, which attends equally to monolingual and multilingual forms. The perspective of heteroglossia allows the analyst to focus on alternations of officially authorized codes and languages, without neglecting “the diversity of socially indexical linguistic features within codes” (Bailey 2007: 268). As will be demonstrated in the articles, the concept of heteroglossia provides a conceptual framework that draws from diverse traditions that address different social and temporal scales while simultaneously attending to the indexical and meta-pragmatic properties of language.

El objetivo de este artículo consiste en vislumbrar los grupos sociales retratados en la obra; reconociéndo los, se entiende que sus voces integran un ejercicio de memoria y de recuperación de un violento pasado histórico. La novela está construida de forma tal que integra ficcionalmente el Diario Militar o Dossier de la Muerte y lo hace desde una estrategia de la memoria que permite conjuntar actores sociales diversos en el panorama inscrito desde la violencia de Estado. En la obra se manifiesta la intertextualidad y la heteroglosia para crear un complejo universo que el lector debe dilucidar y con lo que, consecuentemente, develará cómo se ha inmiscuido el terror, la violencia, el silencio y el olvido en las subjetividades retratadas.

Abstract This paper brings together notions of heteroglossia and religious identity to explore how English becomes indexical of Ismaili distinction in local communities in Pakistan and Tajikistan. Adopting a heteroglossic approach to language provides a perspective which is epistemologically compatible with notions of religion as social, human and interactional, as intricately connected to power, and as both reflecting and being shaped by perspective and positioning. In the paper, I use a “discourse analysis beyond the speech event” approach to engage with data collected during ethnographic fieldwork (qualitative interviews, focus group discussions, fieldnotes) amongst Ismailis in Hunza, northern Pakistan and Khorog, eastern Tajikistan. In analyzing these examples, I attempt to illustrate how ideologies of English become sites for the negotiation of religious distinction.

En la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional, la proyección ha sido considerada como 'motivo semántico' (Halliday, 1994: 219), fenómeno de 'dominio semántico' (Halliday y Matthiessen, 2004: 603-4) o fenómeno discursivo-semántico (Martin 1992:17-19; Martin & White, 2005: 11), dado que puede realizarse en la léxico-gramática mediante diferentes recursos: de manera congruente, a través de nexus clausales, o de manera no congruente o metafórica, a través de otras opciones. En consecuencia, en este trabajo se analizaron los diferentes y variados patrones de realización en español de la proyección en un breve corpus a fin de ser aplicados en estudios futuros en el análisis de la heteroglosia discursiva en el contexto social de las ciencias. El análisis de la Transitividad y el de las relaciones tácticas y lógico-semánticas permitió reconocer en los textos de cada disciplina: a) los recursos que realizan las fuentes de proyección, b) los medios de realización de la proyección y c) el estatus de lo proyectado, ya sea como cláusula proyectada en nexus clausales o como elemento con alguna función en la configuración de la cláusula como representación.

Abstract The interpreter-mediated Premier-Meets-the-Press Conferences are an institutional(ized) discursive event in China, permitting the Chinese premier to answer a range of potentially challenging and face-threatening questions from journalists. Arguably, this dynamic and interactive setting can be profitably conceptualized using Bakhtin’s notion of dialogized heteroglossia. As additional subjective actors in the triadic communication process, the government-affiliated interpreters are caught up in an ideological tug-of-war between the government and (foreign) journalists. That is, there is often a centripetal force pulling toward Beijing’s official positions and stances (the central, unitary and authoritative) and simultaneously a centrifugal force exerted by (foreign) journalists who pose sensitive and adversarial questions (toward the heteroglossic and peripheral away from the center). Manual CDA on 20 years’ corpus data illustrates the interpreters’ tendency to align with the government’s official positions, soften the journalists’ questions and (re)construct a more desirable image for Beijing.

Abstract In this article I address the fact that influential strands in socio- and applied linguistics advocate heteroglossic policies in education and other monolingually organised domains without extending this heteroglossia to public debate about language policy. Often this occurs by presenting linguistic diversity to relevant stakeholders as natural and real, or as the only option on account of its proven effectiveness. I argue that this strategy removes options from the debate by framing it as a scientific rather than political one, that it confronts stakeholders with academic pressure and blame, and that this may diminish scholars’ impact on policy making. Using examples from research on translanguaging, repertoires, and linguistic citizenship, I will suggest that scholars may be more effective in contexts of value conflict when their knowledge serves to expand rather than reduce the range of alternatives for stakeholders. Focusing on education I will then explore how we may reclaim language policy from an evidence-based discourse and address matters of value besides matters of fact.

En su estudio de la novela, Bakhtín considera a la heteroglosia como la principal característica de la prosa de ficción, dado que cada enunciación se produce en un momento histórico particular y en un entorno social específico. La novela, género literario dialógico por excelencia, se constituye por una pluralidad de voces y discursos sociales que representan distintas perspectivas del mundo representado en la obra literaria. En este marco, los conceptos de tiempo y espacio se fusionan en unidades de sentido inseparables que Bakhtín denomina “cronotopos”, núcleos de representación esenciales de la obra. La novela The Heather Blazing (1992), del escritor y periodista irlandés Colm Tóibín, se estructura en torno a tres cronotopos: del encuentro, el umbral y la ruta, cuyo análisis permite explorar las ambigüedades que se producen en la Irlanda de 1990 durante su proceso de modernización y reorganización institucional. El propósito de este trabajo es analizar representaciones de Irlanda contemporánea y de reconstrucción identitaria en la novela de Tóibín, en torno a las categorías de tiempo-espacio e identidad, que se enmarca en el proyecto de investigación “Literatura irlandesa: estudios socio-críticos y traducción como diálogo intercultural”, de la Facultad de Ciencias Humanas, UNLPam. AbstractThis article addresses the narratives of bilingualism that emerged in ethnographic interviews with members of Sancho’s Primary in La Mancha city (Spain), whose prestige as the first MEC/British bilingual school in town has been disputed, transformed and eventually socially accepted as competitively eligible in the global market for two decades. By bringing to the fore a perspective of heteroglossia, the article discusses stakeholders’ stancetaking towards the salient tensions and dilemmas related to bilingualism in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. The analysis discusses how Sancho’s stakeholders by means of indexical meanings and heteroglossic resources come to terms with bilingualism as ideology and practice regarding who the legitimate teacher of English is, whose English-es are legitimated, which classroom practices are most valued and who can guarantee the status and prestige of bilingual programs in this region. In addition, the analysis emphasizes the validity of narratives emerging in interviews as situated, context-dependent, and contextualizing practices shaped by the conditions of linguistic ethnography, while shaping the researcher and participants’ significant values, beliefs and ideas about bilingualism and bilingual programs in Castilla-La Mancha.

From a close reading of films produced on the thirtieth anniversary of the end of the war, the article deciphers complicated meanings about national identity, history, and gender. In this new political economic context, the possibilities for remembering the southern regime—including its people and veterans—remains open and closed. Through the framework of heteroglossia of history, the co-presence of competing viewpoints within cinematic texts points to the complexity of an ever-changing Vietnam.

This study concerns with the use of Appraisal Theory developed by Martin & White (2005), under subsumed of engagement system domain. The engagement system deals with dialogic perspective between speakers and listeners, which is influenced by the approach of Bakhtin/ Voloshinov, called heteroglossia. Heteroglossic backdrop reveals the proposition lies behind what is stated. In this study, a verbal interaction between speaker and listener is presented in the form of press conference release. Currently serving Head Commissioner of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, held a press conference release containing of his visiting report to the camp shelter of Rohingya refugee in Bangladesh. The press conference release is a recorded-video type one, which has approximately 27:30” in length. It is led by a moderator, reported by the Head Commissioner and joined by 6 follow-up questions. Regarding to engagement system used, the utterances are then transcribed into a transcript, thus it gains approximately 395 clauses, moreover, only the utterances spoken by the Head Commissioner taken as the engagement locution realizations. The objectives of this research fall into three: a) to find out the most predominant heteroglossic backdrop Grandi encodes; b) to recognize the values and viewpoint Grandi intends to convey in his report; and c) to identify the authorial voice Grandi uses in addressing his beliefs of the Rohingya refugee crisis to the audiences. The qualitative descriptive method is applied. It is found that contract-disclaim-counter dominates the report by accounts of 55 realizations. It implies that the facts, Grandi reports may against audiences’ expectation, yet in another clause, he describes the situation which can reform audiences’ different viewpoints toward the crisis. The present study explores how minority schoolchildren in multilingual peer group interactions act upon dominant educational and linguistic ideologies as they organize their everyday emerging peer culture. The data draw from ethnographies combined with detailed analysis (CA) of video recordings in two primary monolingual school settings in Sweden. Bakhtin’s processual view of how linguistic norms are used for overcoming the heteroglossia of language is used as a framework for understanding how monolingualism is talked-into-being in multilingual peer groups. As will be demonstrated, the children recurrently participate in corrective practices in which they playfully exploit multiple linguistic resources (syntactic, lexical and phonetic features) and the turn structure of varied activities (conflicts, accusations, insults, classroom discourse) to play with and consolidate a collective critical view of not-knowing correct Swedish. Moreover, they transform faulty talk (repeating structural elements, recycling arguments, using parodic imitations, joint laughter, code-switching) to display their language competence, assert powerful positions and strengthen alliances in the peer group. It is argued that such forms of playful heteroglossic peer group practices are highly ambiguous and paradoxically tend to enforce power hierarchies and values associated with different social languages and codes, thus co-constructing the monolingual ideology.

Over the last few decades, there has been an increased awareness about imprecise, inaccurate and, thus, unfair conceptualisations of language based on monoglossic views of language that delegitimise the linguistic repertoire of multilingual minorities as is the case of heritage speakers of Spanish in the US or speakers of Lingua Franca English worldwide. At the same time, there are theoretical and educational proposals that offer new conceptualisations of multilingualism focused on the concept of heteroglossia, which, in contrast with monoglossic views, focuses our attention on the fluid and full use of all linguistic resources available to language learners/users as they engage in the process of interacting with their interlocutors. In the present paper, I describe an important challenge that compromises the valuable agenda of heteroglossic approaches to develop multilingualism: the effect of listeners’ biases and reverse linguistic stereotyping. That is, educational programmes designed to counteract the negative effect of monoglossic approaches to second language learning in general cannot adopt a segregationist approach (neither in their theoretical design nor in their practical implementation). To place this challenge in context, I describe in detail the specific example of Spanish heritage second language learners at the tertiary level of education in the US setting and I also provide a broad outline of potential improvements in the curricular design of such programmes.

Traumatic narratives differ from traditional ones by defying chronological structure. Often, victims of trauma are unable to recall their trauma, and it is then present in their narratives only symptomatically. This article argues that the structure of A Gesture Life lends itself to an interpretation based on trauma theory. The narrator, Hata, is revealed as traumatized through an analysis of his evasive voice, the counter-narratives presented by other characters, and the novel’s disjointed chronology. It is concluded that like victims of trauma, Hata seeks to make up for the absence of the events that caused him to become traumatized through a fictional narrative. However, through the intrusion of his trauma and through the voices of K and Sunny, who both oppose the narrative he attempts to confine them in, his narrative is ultimately revealed as a method of repression to both himself and the reader.

Antenarratives have two distinct features: they tell the story of the future of the organization in advance of its arrival and, as part of this process, they resolve tensions between narratives and living stories. Applying Bakhtin’s notion of heteroglossia, the purpose of this paper is further to enlighten the antenarrative processes of bridging the gap between narratives and living stories in prospective sensemaking of the future of the organization. Taking into account the quantum turn within social and human sciences and philosophies, the paper aims at enriching our understanding of how human and non-human voices take part in antenarrative processes of creating organizational futures. Antenarratives are therefore further conceptualized in the context of the quantum age. By bringing to the fore essential ecological aspects of Bakhtin’s work and reading these aspects into his notion of heteroglossia, the paper offers a Bakhtinian-inspired lens through which antenarrative human-world relationships can be further enlightened. The paper suggests viewing the organization and its relationship with the environment as a living antenarrative medium creating future worlds in the quantum age. Furthermore, the paper suggests implications for the practice of managing the antenarrative living medium of creating new worlds. The paper advocates the inclusion of ethical, material, embodied and multimodal perspectives on storytelling, thereby advancing a storytelling philosophy in the quantum age.
