In order to synthesize the trinuclear Mo/Ni heterometallic string complex (3,1)-form [Mo2Ni(µ3-mpta)4(NCS)2] (1), the ligand Hmpta is used to react with Mo2(OAc)4 and Ni(OAc)2•4H2O in refluxing naphthalene.
