Full textBackground: Historically, people in same-sex relationships, have had a vulnerable position in society and are often victims of discrimination. In Sweden there is a law that prohibits discrimination related to sexual orientation. The aim of the health care law is that the entire population should have an equal health. Despite this, the selfrated heath of those who live in a same-sex relationship is often lower than the rest of the population. In healthcare, there is often a heteronormative approach, which can lead to uncertainty for families with a different constellation than heterosexuals. Aim: The aim of this study was therefore to describe how families with parents who lives in same-sex realtionship experienced meeting within health care. Method: To describe this, a qualitative content analysis with descriptive approach of 10 scientific articles were done. This was then discussed by Levinas's theory of the Other. Results: The results that emerged were that most positive experiences were based in a comfortness, which was born out of an acceptance from the healthcare side. The adverse experiences tended to be imbued with an emotional alienation, which in turn to an increased vulnerability. Conclusion: For all families to feel welcome and obvious, it would probably be helpful if health personell should meet each individual and family with an open mind, without making any assumptions on their lives. As the personell makes open questions and are comfortable with the answers, it might make it easier for all families to be honest with their situation.

Full textBeing gay and to travel can give rise to many problems despite the perception that a homonormativity is evolving in today's societies. Within the scope of this paper it examines homosexual Swedes' experiences and needs as tourists. The perspective of intersectionality has been applied to distinguish privilege and oppression of gay men and women in a tourism context. The methodological approaches are qualitative e-mail interviews with a snowball sample and a thematic analysis to analyze the respondents' answers. This paper has shown that when people are traveling to non-gay-friendly destinations and spaces they’re subjected to repression in various forms. Both men and women reflect on their safety when choosing destinations and to some extent avoid traveling to certain countries. Women disclaim their needs of specific products and services as homosexuals, while the men affirm the gay culture. Women, in this case, may be more likely to be subjected to oppression in many different perspectives. To some extent, the authors consider that a heteronormative oppression exist in today's tourism and it is a long-term effort to overcome the problems that homosexuals are subjected to.

Full textOur society is based on a heterosexual norm. This may lead to the fact that LGBT-persons have a poorer health status than the heterosexual population. The nurse education lacks information and courses that highlights sexual identity. This is defective since healthcare staff needs knowledge on the subject to be able to treat patients in a professional and respectful manner. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how heteronormativity influences the treatment of patients within a healthcare context.
This paper is a survey of literature based on 12 articles and one dissertation.
The results showed that the healthcare staff and the healthcare students had both positive and negative attitudes towards non heterosexual patients. The majority had positive attitudes. It is thus important to highlight the negative attitudes and derive them to heteronormative ways in a healthcare context. The non heterosexual patients experienced problems dealing with homophobia, the issue of coming out or not and poor heteronormative communication.
The healthcare staff needs to get accurate education regarding heteronormativity and sexual identities. The negative attitudes towards non heterosexual patients would thus lessen and the treatment towards these persons would improve.
More research on the subject of nursing and heteronormativity is needed. Research focusing only on the nurse’s work and how it is influenced by heteronormativity is wanted.

Full textThe last decade has brought great changes for homosexuals in laws and regulations. Among other things, the right to be parent is now legally accepted. Many gay couples have therefore decided to create a family. The purpose of this study was to describe lesbian women´s experiences in connection with prenatal care and childbirth. The compilation resulted in five main categories: Communication, Acknowledgment, Defense, Knowledge and Openness, which was worked up from Imogene King´s theory of caring. The results showed that several women had experiences of positive character, but that there also were many who talked about negative experiences. Heteronormativity was a constantly recurring theme that permeated all categories. Caregivers often assumed that the lesbian women were heterosexual without regard to other possibilities. This study shows that health professionals should be aware of their own way to communicate and to ensure the uniqueness of each individual. Positive experiences emerged when the midwife is clearly confirmed the lesbian women as prospective parents. Good care requires that health professionals are aware of heteronormativity, and that creates obstacles to the care of lesbian women.

Full textBackground: LGBTQ is a collective term for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer and is a current issue in today’s society. The perception of LGBTQ-persons has changed through history, where laws have been developed and organizations have been formed in order to promote living conditions and are working for equal rights. LGBTQ-persons are still subject to hate crimes and discrimination. The occurrence of health issues, such as somatic disease, mental illness and various forms of substance abuse are more common in this minority group than among the rest of the population. Communication is a determining factor for the experience of the encounter. Aim: To describe LGBTQ-persons’ experiences of the encounters with healthcare professionals. Method: A literature review was conducted, where ten science articles were examined and analyzed based on similarities and differences, to answer the aim. Results: The result is presented through two themes and three subthemes: The varying knowledge of health care professionals includes Being a reference and The health care professionals’ attitudes and approach, as well as the theme To disclose or not to disclose includes Internalized stigma. Discussion: The discussion highlights the importance of an open approach and awareness to promote equal care in which all people will feel safe and welcome. Two phenomena are discussed, Discrimination as a result of the disclosure of sexual identity and Heteronormativity as a result of social structures, in relation to Joyce Travelbee's theory of interpersonal relationships.

Full textBackground:Several studies reports vulnerability amongst homosexual patients in the healthcare and the quality of life for this group is generally considered reduced when compared with people who define themselves as heterosexual. Older gay people have lived during a time when homosexuality was unthinkable which may cause a difficult coming-out process. In care settings, there is insufficient understanding of older gay people’s experience and history, which can affect nursing quality and increase the suffering for the patient. Aim:The aim is to describe older gay people’s experience of living in a time when their sexual orientation was classified as a disease. Methods:Semi-structured interviews were held with seven people above 65 years of age, all who became aware of their homosexual orientation at young age. The data was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results:The informants described a general problem regarding negative response and discriminating surroundings. Negative experiences were expressed with about their sexuality, which could result in a questioning about their own situation. The interviews showed a historical and ongoing problem concerning society's view of homosexuality and how this affected the informants. Discussions:The discussion problematizes the phenomena of "Not livening openly," "Negative experiences of your sexual orientation" and "Your bare existence is breaking the norms". The argument is backed-up around stigma and heteronormativity. A health care situation can lead to increased suffering among older gay people if hospital staffs have negative attitudes towards homosexuals and the patient’s feelings are excluded. The nurse can reduce this suffering through an increased understanding of older gay people’s situation and vulnerability.

Full textThe purpose of this article is by dint of using stigma theory try to get an insight into and understanding of how gay men feel about their place in the social environment. The intention of this paper is to try to get an insight into and an understanding of how gay men experience prejudice, opportunities to be open and opportunities to resist the power that heteronormativity means. The study is qualitative with a hermaneutic scientific approach, and I have conducted six in-depth interviews with gay men to find out how the perception of their own places in life is influenced by the interaction with the social environment. The result shows that the homosexuality that the stigma comes from and the public social structure limits the gay man's life chances, and how well the gay man succeeds in integrating into society depends on the social context, but also on what relationship the gay man himself has to homosexuality. None of the respondents, however, experienced a widespread alienation. Furthermore, the results show that there are several different strategies to deal with openness and that these vary depending on the situation, and that men's relationships to friends and family to a great extent is not adversely affected by the stigma.

Full textBackground: The literature review shows that society is permeated by heteronormativity. Knowledge gaps in education programs in health care and in clinical practice concerning encounters with LGBTQ people. A knowledge gap can be identified on how encounters are created between nurses and LGBTQ people in an emergency department. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how registered nurses in a hospital emergency department encounter LGBTQ- people. Method: Descriptive empirical study with qualitative approach, interactive conversation interviews with six registered nurses was conducted and analyzed with modified content analysis, editing analysis style. Results: From the analysis emerged four categories: emerging gender experience, a demanding but open work environment, the ambivalent pair and good and dignified care. Conclusion: The findings from interactive conversation interviews with six registered nurses in an emergency department were explained with concepts of queer theory. Despite the emerging gender experience is hampered by the dominant heteronormativity and lack of knowledge concerning sex, gender and sexuality contributes to the ambiguity of the nurses in the emergency department, even under present conditions, encounters are created with LGBTQ people, in which they are given a good and dignified care.

In this study we want to illustrate how youth thinks and feels about homosexuality. Studying just this has been shown to be very important, to show youth and society how prejudice and bad attitudes against the subject can produce psychological problems among youth with deviating sexualities. Homosexuality is a very large area of study. We have chosen to focus our study on the knowledge-background, dissertations, scientific articles, reports, and different organisation’s information to try and completely cover the subject we have chosen. We made a qualitative questionnaire, which we then handed out to tree different classes in the upper secondary school for answering. Through our results, which we concluded based on the psychosocial theories and scientific studies earlier made in this area, we could see that females in general had a more positive approach to homosexuality than males. It also showed that males/females who could relate to, or knew a homosexual individual had a bigger understanding and where more tolerating to it.

Full textThe concept heteronormativity was used in the literature for the first time in 1993. This term can be found in dictionaries and encyclopedias from 2006 but only in a few of the most modern publications. The term currently lacks an exact definition. The aim of concept analysis is to identify characteristics for a term by studying its use. Healthcare relations can and should be developed into a caring relation, which is dependent on a connection involving body, mind and soul between the caregiver and the patient. The aim of this work was to describe and deepen the understanding of the term heteronormativity from a healthcare perspective. Rodgers’ evolutionary concept analysis of 23 scientific papers and common newspapers resulted in seven defined attributes: assumptions, norms, social hierarchies, sanctions for those deviating from the norm, gender roles, sexual relationships and stereotype family apprehension. The analysis also identified what precedes the concept, two women working with the concept and five related concepts: equality, gender, power, discrimination and homophobia. A number of consequences of which all were negative for both individuals and the society were found. Healthcare is negatively influenced in several ways by heteronormativity rendering the caring relation impossible. Conclusion: Heteronormativity leads to a number of problems and everyone are both victims and supporters of the system.

Full textThis dissertation examines how normality is performed and challenged in everyday practices in the early years of compulsory school, focusing primarily on norms of age, gender and sexuality. The empirical material is created through participant observation and interviews with pupils and teachers in two classes in two schools (school year 2 and 3). The study uses poststructuralist theories to highlight how power works in the everyday and the familiar, both in making comprehensibility and meaningfulness but also in defining deviations and normalize exclusion and subordination. The analysis shows how pupils and teachers perform and question different expectations of how to be and act as children, adults, pupils, teachers, girl, boy, etcetera. It appears that this 'doing' of norms is linked to the creation of different belongings, formal and informal settings, differences between class periods and breaks, classrooms and locker rooms or seriousness and laughter. The study shows that these changes create space for negotiations and challenges in what can be understood as uncertain or border areas. By taking note of how norms interacts the study further shows that challenges and questioning of norms around gender and sexuality are at risk of being trivialized by the pupils' position as children. This means that even if norms appears as boundaries of the possible and desirable, one cannot equate the challenges and the crossing of boundaries and transformation of norms. The study thus argues that pedagogical work that problematize how norms are repeated and challenged in school must consider ambiguities and the uncertain as part of creating hierarchical orders.

Full textThis study focuses on the portraitation of transgender people in Swedish television. More specifically, clips from two of the biggest Swedish TV-channels, SVT and TV4, are being analysed. Two clips have been chosen from each channel, one interview and one reporting/news segment. The clips have been chosen strategically to serve the purpose of the study, which means that they in one way or another treats the topic of transgender people. To be able to examine and analyse the portraitation of transgender people, critical discourse analysis (CDA) have been implemented both as a theory and as a method. The study’s theoretical framework is based on queer theory and the theories that branch out from it, for example gender theory. The approach of the study is based on three different levels, from which the clips are analysed. The first one is analysis of language texts, where linguistic tools are being studied. The second one is analysis of discourse practice, where discourses in the text are being identified. The third and last one is analysis of discursive events as instances of sociocultural practice, where the content is contextualized and is put in relation to a social world. Four themes are identified in the analysis. The first one, the exposing of a minority in a minority, shows that half the analysis material shows transgender people who have regretted their gender confirmatory treatment, which is not representative for the majority of the group. The second one, heteronormativity as present norm, shows that the heteronorm can be identified in all clips, through discussions, stories and wording. The third theme, transgender people as a vulnerable group, shows a portraitation of transgender people as vulnerable and exposed. The fourth and last theme, HBTQ as education, shows an educational tendency in the material.

Full textOur study is about heteronormativity in the elementary schools sex education. Heteronormativity is the assumption that the only right and normal way to be is heterosexual. Norms exists everywhere across cultures and groups. Heteronormativity is a leading and global norm in our society. Problems can arise for those students who in any way deviate from the heterosexual norm. Teacher education in Sweden involve sex and social life in a very limited extent. This may mean that teachers do not have the skills that are necessary to teach the subject. The aim of our study was to investigate how ninth graders perceive that heteronormativity is treated in the sex education. To find out the students' own perceptions and opinions about teaching, a questionnaire was constructed that was answered out of 194 students in ninth grade at four different elementary schools in Skåne. The results showed that students who had been involved in the arrangement of sex education to a greater extent have learned something new / substantial and have learned more about their rights and obligations relating to sexuality. It also reveals that the education has a pathogenic and preventive focus, and puts much emphasis on sexually transmitted diseases and contraceptives. The focus is largely on sex, the part about relationships and social life remain in the background. The students express in their own words that the teachers seem to think the topic is embarrassing and that teaching is focused on things that students already know. They also express their wish for more education about sexual orientations. Conclusions that can be drawn from this study suggest that the school's sex education is heteronormative and assumes much of the heterosexual community. Furthermore it often involves other sexual orientations as problem areas.

Full textBackground: In encountering patients, an understanding of the patients world view is necessary for the health care professional to provide good care. A basic aspect of a person‟s view of the world is sexual orientation. Discrimination based on sexuality is illegal in Sweden. The maintenance of this law is obstructed by the fact that heterosexuality is the current norm leading to homosexuality being in violation of this norm. These norms are also present in the health care system. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe homosexual patients‟ experience of encounters with health care professionals. Method: This literature study was based on ten qualitative studies. Results: Findings showed that patients experienced that the health care professionals were inadequate in their treatment of homosexual patients. Patients felt that they weren‟t seen and treated as their true self, the treatment was heteronormative and health care professionals lacked specific knowledge of their situation. It was expressed that to disclose their sexual orientation was perceived as a risk. Conclusion: Homosexual patients felt that heteronormativity influenced health professionals and how they perceived the patients. Patients were assumed to be heterosexual and therefore felt invisible and marginalized.

The aim of this paper is to analyse how normative heterosexuality works in the creation of gender in four fiction titles used in the school subject Swedish. A gender and a queer perspective are used when analyzing the characters in the texts. According to queer theory, heteronormativity plays a decisive role in the creation of gender. The syllabus of the subject Swedish serve as the starting point as they proclaim that literature has a decisive influence on pupil's creation of identity.
The results of the analyses showed that the heteronormative gender structure exists and works in the books. But the result also shows that there are several characters that challenge the structure by breaking social norms and thereby creates possible gender positions.

Full textThe purpose of the essay is to examine Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual person’s experiences of the Social Services treatment. Our question is: How do Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual person’s experience the treatment in a relief seeking situation at Social Services? We have a social constructive point of view. Our theoretical foundation is heteronormativity, heterosexism, homophobia, coming out/disclosure, intersectionality, master suppression techniques and we discuss Social Services as a system. We used a qualitative research method and have done five semi-structured interviews, with three men and two women aged 17- 31 years. The empirical material has been analysed by using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) model, where we used the interviewees own words through which we composed three major themes; Starting point in the meeting with Social Services, Sexual orientation and the treatment of the Social Service. What kind of contact our interviewees had with the Social Services and how they perceive their sexual orientation and their experiences of how it is to be gay, lesbian or bisexual is of relevance in their contact with the Social Services. It will affect their ability to act and to what extent they will feel able to be open about their sexuality. Our interviewees tell of a treatment by the Social Services which in various ways makes their sexual orientation invisible, ridicules or puts blame and shame on them. We also have a few examples of neutral treatment from the Social Services concerning sexual orientation. In the essay we have divided the care relationship into a systematic level and a personal level. Our interpretation is that Social Services on a systematic level have a heteronormative culture in the organization. This leads to a heterosexistic treatment. The personal level gives the individual social worker a certain amount of flexibility and sometimes it leads to a homophobic treatment but it can also lead to a treatment that makes it possible to break with the heteronorm. We seek a Social Services that actively works towards breaking down the heteronormativity inside the organization.

The aim with this study was to try getting an insight in how it is to live in the complex context in having it hbt (homo-bi-transsexual) disposition and to be Christian. We wanted on an individual level try to interpret and to understand through a queertheoretical perspective. We have done a qualitative study that we have based on 6st semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, the study's focus lies on persons who have an active life within the Christian context. The concepts that inform the entire study are heteronormativity, hbt and stigma. The analysis is based on an analysis model that is called Interpretative phenomenological analysis, and builds on lifting forward themes. A total of seven themes are lifted and they go by the names; Social rooms, Personal rooms, Adaptation, Quiet consensus, Discrimination, Admission and Future. In each theme, the interview persons' own experiences are lifted forward through quotations and are linked to our selected theory and concepts. Conclusions one can deduct of the analysis, is that it is a complex environment that however begins to become more including for hbt persons. The complex lies in that differently Christian parishes see differently on these questions and there is no clear common attitude. This gives various degrees on positive and negative sides with an hbt disposition in the Christian context.

Full textAuthor: David Fogelström Supervisor: Kutte Jönsson Examiner: Tomas Peterson Keywords: Powerlifting, women’s experiences, hegemony, hegemonic masculinity, heteronormativity Aim: The purpose of this study is to explore and understand, through semi-structured interviews, female powerlifters experiences of practicing a traditionally male-dominated sport and how these experiences can be understood in relation to hegemonic masculinity. Method: Through semi-structured interviews with women who compete in powerlifting, I have collected and analysed data to be able to answer the questions. Theory: The theoretical framework of this study is Hegemonic Masculinity Theory. Results and Conclusions: The study shows that there are similarities as well as differences between powerlifting and other male-dominated sports in how women experience practicing a traditionally male-dominated sport. Examples of similarities are positive effects on self-confidence, the desire to be a role model and break gender norms while women felt that they were questioned and not taken seriously to the same extent as men. Differences were the experience of being able to challenge themselves in powerlifting and how the competition in powerlifting was a strong motivating factor.
