Full textBackground: The group of elderly non-heterosexuals in Sweden is estimated to include 80,000 people. Within the nursing programme, there is limited knowledge about older LGBT people. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experience of being elderly and non-heterosexual. Method: In this literature study eight qualitative articles, published between 2001 and 2009, were compiled. Literature searches were performed in the databases CINAHL, PsychINFO and PubMed. After perusal, determination of the quality and analysis of the content, the articles were compiled into five categories and 16 subcategories. Results: Older non-heterosexuals viewed and dealt with their sexual identity in different ways. Overall, many participants in the studies experienced a high level of confidence and satisfaction with their lives but many experienced ageism and felt discriminated within nursing contexts. Several of the participants felt that they did not have the same legal rights as heterosexuals do. Some non-heterosexuals chose to deliberately conceal their sexual orientation due to fear of negative attitudes while others lived openly with their sexual identity. Conclusion: It is necessary to make the older non-heterosexuals visible. In order to make elderly non-heterosexuals feel secure and equally treated in health care, increased awareness and changes in attitudes are important. Hopefully, the findings will result in better knowledge and greater understanding of elderly non-heterosexuals in the nursing context. Further research is needed on older LGBT persons.

Full textBackground: Homosexuality historically had a series of laws that spoke against their human rights. In Sweden, a healthcare law about fair treatment exists, however, not everyone got the same care. A nurse's key area of expertise is the care and understanding of patient treatment. Aim: The aim of the literature study was to explore homosexual experiences of treatment in the meetings with healthcare professionals and to look at the included articles sample groups. Method: Literature study with descriptive design based on 12 qualitative scientific articles from the search engine MedLine and manual searches. Main results: The results showed both negative and positive experiences of meetings with healthcare professionals. The elements that influenced how the meetings were experienced were the professionals' attitudes, knowledge about the subject and usage of heteronormative words. Most of the included articles informed about the participants' ages and inclusion criteria. The largest part of participants were women and nine of twelve articles were made in Europe. Conclusion: This have shown that the treatments homosexual patients got could have been influenced by the healthcare professionals’ knowledge, attitudes and personal values. The homosexuals described both positive and negative experiences where heterosexual assumption, certain word choices and feelings of doubt have occurred. An increased knowledge and education about questions concerning homosexual’s and their experiences in the meeting with healthcare can help the undergraduate nurses to develop the capability for a more individual and positive encounter for homosexual people.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine and understand the view on gender patterns in preschool children's conversations about play. Previous research has shown that in preschools is the prevailing norm the heterosexual norm and that children adjust to educators and adult world standards on how they are expected to behave. There is currently no way of knowing how many Swedish preschools are working with gender equality because there is no obligation to report it. The empirical material in this study, consisting of two group interviews with children between the ages of 4 to 5, show that children apply the prevailing stereotypical gender notions on toys and objects in their local environment. According to this study, the children were aware of gender roles and were dividing game formations and toys into male and female coded positions. At the same time as the children assigned the gender categories "girls" and "boys" on various items from their play environment, they did however also show understanding for the idea that girls and boys should not be divided but instead play together and be able to use all preschool objects from an accepted norm. The essay concludes with some reflections that arose during my study and suggestions for further research.

Several factors are essential in judging the attractions of your mating partners. These encompassing physical factors, psychological traits, social status and demonstration of resources/wealth. Men who possess resources are considered more attractive by women who prefer long-term relationships. Recent research showing conspicuous consumption may play an important role as a criterion of attractiveness. On the other hand, conspicuous consumption seems to increase the attractiveness of men to women interested in short-term relationships. Thus, the first chapter consists of a literature review of resources as signs of attractiveness in long-term relationships. The second method is an analysis of the results of four experiments that attempt to corroborate an influence of conspicuous consumption as a criterion of attractiveness of women interested in short-term relationships. Considering the scarcity of studies with non-heterosexual participants, the second objective of this study was to verify if conspicuous consumption would influence the attractiveness of non-heterosexual individuals in short-term relationships. The results did not showed influence of conspicuous consumption on attractiveness, regardless of sexual orientation. Surprisingly, some results suggested that women found individuals more attractive in the condition without conspicuous consumption. This may have occurred due to sample bias. Most participants had a high educational level, which may be associated with higher preference for long-term relationships. The object used as conspicuous consumption (popular car and luxury car) may still not be of special interest to the sample with a high degree of schooling.

Full textThe essay is about how teenagers around 18 years of age in a small town in Sweden talk about gender, body and sexuality. The study is based on two focus group interviews with five boys and four girls. We have then thematized and analyzed the material with queer theory. The results show how young people see heterosexuality as something 'natural' and gender as biologically determined. The teenagers are critical towards anything that deviates from the traditional nuclear family consisting of mother, father and children. Norms are created in their speech as some of them acts as so called "border guards" for these norms. Our conclusion is that there are difficulties to be deviate in terms of gender, sexuality and body in a small town.

Full textAbstractThis is a D-essay on the theme of "Violence against women". The essay is qualitative and I have interviewed eight women who have lived in violent relationships. I have also interviewed a social worker at the helpline (kvinnojouren) and a policeman who in his work comes into contact with this phenomenon. My main purpose in this study was to understand and explain what makes a woman stay in a destructive relationship in which violence occurs. I have based on previous research, such as Eva Lundgren and Margareta Hydén and Mona Eliasson and the information from my informants seen some patterns. The main theories that have been used in the study are Eva Lundgren's Normalization Process and Margaret Hydéns Individual lifeplans (individuella livsprojekt) and common coupleprojects (gemensamma parprojekt) and the theory by Mona Eliasson about gender norms. A recurring theme that has emerged in the investigation has been that the woman often is subordinate to the man and that she for various reasons which are presented in the study adapts to him. Another fairly recurrent theme in the paper has been the gender stereotypes that are commonly used in explanations of destructive relationships. With help from Carin Holmberg and Viveca Enanders research and my informants I have also been able to see how different bands are created between men and women who live in these conditions. I have been able to discern that many of these bands serve as a strong retention in a destructive relationship. To understand the violence against women you have to look at the problem in a context. It is difficult to tilt the problem surrounding domestic violence in only one theory and model of explanation and because of that this studie explores multiple different perspectives.

Full textNgoma, Sarah Nyirongo. "Factors influencing the uptake of couple's HIV counselling and testing among men in Livingstone District, Zambia." University of the Western Cape, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4736.
Full textBackground: HIV counselling and testing is important as a gateway to accessing prevention, treatment, care and support services. Studies have shown that couples who are married or are in a stable heterosexual relationship are at risk of transmitting HIV infection to each other if one partner is infected. The uptake of couples counselling and testing (CHCT) by males in Livingstone is very low despite the fact that they are the decision makers in most homes. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the factors determining the uptake of CHCT amongst males in a long term heterosexual relationship who came to a health facility for HIV counselling and testing in Livingstone, Zambia and their perceived benefits of CHCT. Methodology: A case control study was conducted with cases being men age 21 years and above, who were married/cohabiting or were in a steady heterosexual relationship for six months and more and had jointly tested for HIV as a couple, and controls were men age 21 years and above, who were married/cohabiting or were in a steady relationship for six months and more and came to be tested for HIV alone without a partner. The structured questionnaires were administered to a total of 294 participants (147 controls, 147 cases) who were recruited from three public health facilities and one private facility in Livingstone between August and September 2013.Results: The only 2 factors independently associated with testing for HIV via CHCT was, talking about HIV as a couple‟ which positively affected CHCT and „had a previous HIV test as a couple‟ which negatively affected CHCT. Findings indicate that „talk about HIV as a couple‟ was a strong independent predictor of CHCT in the multivariate analysis; however it was uncertain whether it was a predictor of CHCT or a consequence of CHCT. It is probable that having already „had a previous HIV test as a couple‟ the participants would not see the need for testing via CHCT again. Other factors that were significantly associated with uptake of CHCT on bivariate analysis but were not significant on multivariate logistic regression analysis included those that are associated with a greater likelihood of CHCT: think CHCT is beneficial /useful, know partners HIV status, know positive things about CHCT and talk about sexual issues as a couple. Other factors negatively associated with uptake of CHCT were: ever tested for HIV before, informed partner about HIV status, think partner is at risk of contracting HIV, think self is at risk of contracting HIV, low self-risk-rating of HIV infection and marital status. Conclusion: The decision for a couple to go for CHCT is probably relatively complex, because most of the factors measured were linked to each other and it was difficult to separate them to identify if a factor on its own was able to influence the uptake of CHCT. However a couple that communicates with each other about HIV issues is likely to be motivated to go for CHCT.

Polyamory has been practiced for centuries in many different cultures (Labriola, 1999; Klesse, 2006; Robinson, 2013). Previous research on polyamorous relationships has focused primarily on homosexual males. There has been limited research on polyamorous relationships from the woman's perspective and no research focused exclusively on heterosexual women who identify as polyamorous. This study explored the lived experience of heterosexual polyamorous women in polyamorous relationships using interpretive phenomenology. This included understanding the decision to participate in polyamorous relationships, exploring the boundaries heterosexual women use to regulate and maintain multiple relationships, and giving these women the opportunity to refute assumptions and stereotypes associated with identifying themselves as polyamorous. The results of this research study provide insight into this perspective on polyamory and offer recommendations for clinical professionals to use when working with this population.

Full textThe notion of this study initially started taking shape through our interest in studying the constitution of identity in young adolescent people. The study was carried out in the Save the Children project Ellen & allan which organizes discussion groups with a norm-critical agenda for young people in the age of 14. The purpose of this study was to analyze how young people participating in Ellen & allan constitutes a masculine and feminine identity, and the importance of young people's social relationships for this constituent. The study consists of three interviews with project managers and discussion leaders of the project, and of six hours of observation on four separate occasions in an Ellen-group and in an allan-group. The interviews contributed to an understanding of the project which prepared us and created a clear focus for our meeting with the field. The interviews were also designed in such a way that they came to produce data that could be correlated with our observation data. From our analysis of the interviews and observations, we conclude that young people’s need to create and maintain social relationships lead to conformity within the discussion groups, contributing to adolescents constituting a masculine and feminine identity that originates from a masculine heterosexual hegemony. In such hegemony the masculine identity consists of attributes of agency and power, whereas the feminine identity is passive and subordinate and is considered being the opposite of a masculine identity.

Full textIn this study I am analyzing how categories of sexuality and gender are represented in Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptameron. I have narrowed the object of study down to two of the seventy-two novellas; number forty-seven and forty-three, and to four of the ten devisants; Oisille, Parlamente, Hircan and Dagoucin. The theoretical frame is taken from Judith Butlers Gender Trouble. Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) and Undoing Gender (2004) and from Thomas Laqueurs Making Sex. Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud (1990). Butler’s aim is to deconstruct terms such as feminine and masculine, which function as imagined normalization categories due to power relations. In Undoing Gender she asks: “If I am a certain gender, will I still be regarded as part of the human? Will the ‘human’ expand to include me in its reach? If I desire in certain ways, will I be able to live?” These questions are of great importance for my study, which presents how the categories of sexuality and gender can be negotiated in the equalized frame Marguerite de Navarre creates for her ten devisants and novellas. At the same time I assess how every attempt to go beyond the boundaries of norms fails due to a norm of heterosexuality, which constrains the binary categories of man and woman. There are four main discourses by which the heterosexual norm is internalized by the devisants in Heptameron: the Christian, the aristocratic, the patriarchal and the neo-platonic. I suggest that each of the four devisants that I have studied represents one of these discourses. Since there are no definitive lines or definitive conclusions reached in the discussions among them it would be more correct to say that all the discourses effect all of the devisants to some extent, but that all the devisants act through a main discourse when he/she express his/her individual opinions. When the devisants in the frame leave it to the reader to come to a conclusion about right or wrong behavior for men and women, they are still rather set in their own opinions and, also, quite unforgiving. It is my contention that the novellas create more room for negotiations of the sexual and gender roles than the frame. In novella forty-three a woman acts within the role of the active, hence masculine, part of a love affair, and novella forty-seven tells the story of a parfaicte amytié between two men. But it is also obvious that these attempts to stress and break the norms of sexuality and gender are unsuccessful, once again due to the fixed norm of heterosexuality which constrain the binary categories of man and woman. In the novellas these very failures put the norms under stress, since they point out the very problem with the determination of sexual and gender categories which were prevalent during the Renaissance. I conclude my results by returning to Butler’s question above; “If I desire in certain ways, will I be able to live?” In Heptameron one can always find a chance to try a different way, but in the end only the heterosexual desire in which man and woman are in dichotomy survives.

Full textThe purpose of the present study was to examine gender differences in motives and methods among perpetrators of lethal partner violence in heterosexual relationships. A quantitative design was used in this non-experimental cross-sectional study, in which data were collected from a sample of the legal cases of Swedish courts, also the legal cases of district courts, courts of appeal and the Supreme Court published in a judicial database. A sample of N = 49 legal cases were examined by means of a coding scheme, including n = 30 legal cases consisting of male perpetrators and n = 19 legal cases of female perpetrators. The obtained data were analyzed by using a chi-square test for independence. The results indicate that the gender of perpetrators in lethal partner violence was significantly related to motives for the lethal violence, in which prior exposure to intimate partner violence differed significantly between men and women, but not to methods of the lethal violence. Conclusions drawn from this study were that the motives for lethal partner violence differed because of the perpetrator's gender, while the methods of lethal partner violence were the same regardless of gender.
