Abstract:
The city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania is still influenced by its colonial structure. This is particularly apparent in the former 'European quarter' Oyster Bay and its perception by the inhabitants of other parts of the city. On the basis of aerial photographs and interviews with people who lived in the city under British colonial rule as well as younger inhabitants this study analyses the extent to which Oyster Bay can be seen as 'heterotopia' in Foucault's sense. The focus is upon the social function of Oyster Bay as an 'other place' for the rest of the city.

Abstract:
The leading idea of this study lies in the analysis of the phenomenon of "Island Fascination", which reaches from literature over fine art to popular culture and tourism. This is done by looking at some of the essential concepts and codes of modern knowledge. A phenomenological and structural view of insular spaces is followed by an outline of their mythic, literary and iconographic interpretation from antiquity to modern times in the first part of the work. The look is directed beyond specific topic contents to a series of formal characteristics, which define the latitude of island interpretations. The second part of the work is concerned with the function of imaginary and symbolic island references between the discovery of Tahiti and the Romantic natural and art philosophy. It sketches the conctruction of a modern space of desire, which presents the island as a "symbolic landscape" at the horizon of a sphere of utmost knowledge and enjoyment. The work tackles the implementation of a fictional insular happiness in concepts of landscape, experience, global topography and history; and it deals with the effects of this topic on modern ideas of nature, art, desire, creation and authority. The analysis of such ideas leads to a closer examination of retroactions of modernity, primitivism and insular imaginations in concepts of the avant-garde. The final third part of the work intends to show that the vehement revival of literary and artistic insular fascination about 1900 corresponds to simultaneous articulations of an unconscious or unspeakable "other".

Abstract:
Background Pancreatic heterotopia (PH) is defined as ectopic pancreatic tissue outside the normal pancreas and its vasculature and duct system. Most frequently, PH is detected incidentally by histopathological examination. The aim of the present study was to analyze a large single-center series of duodenal PH with respect to the clinical presentation. Methods A prospective pancreatic database was retrospectively analyzed for cases of PH of the duodenum. All pancreatic and duodenal resections performed between January 2000 and October 2015 were included and screened for histopathologically proven duodenal PH. PH was classified according to Heinrich’s classification (Type I acini, ducts, and islet cells; Type II acini and ducts; Type III only ducts). Results A total of 1274 pancreatic and duodenal resections were performed within the study period, and 67 cases of PH (5.3%) were identified. The respective patients were predominantly male (72%) and either underwent pancreatoduodenectomy (n = 60); a limited pancreas resection with partial duodenal resection (n = 4); distal pancreatectomy with partial duodenal resection (n = 1); total pancreatectomy (n = 1); or enucleation (n = 1). Whereas 65 patients (83.5%) were asymptomatic, 11 patients (18.4%) presented with symptoms related to PH (most frequently with abdominal pain [72%] and duodenal obstruction [55%]). Of those, seven patients (63.6%) had chronic pancreatitis in the heterotopic pancreas. The risk of malignant transformation into adenocarcinoma was 2.9%. Conclusions PH is found in approximately 5% of pancreatic or duodenal resections and is generally asymptomatic. Chronic pancreatitis is not uncommon in heterotopic pancreatic tissue, and even there is a risk of malignant transformation. PH should be considered for the differential diagnosis of duodenal lesions and surgery should be considered, especially in symptomatic cases.

It is in language that things get a meaning. In it, some verbs are impersonal and have no subject. This implies not having someone to agree with, like the verb "to do”. All verb indicates an action, an act in constitution. This is the case of this study: a process of "feature", a becoming-another, a becoming-body. The materialization of one corpus, about which to tell about the body's relations with the world and with others. This constitution will be made in four main actions: did, undoing, (re) doing and did. Such actions indicate the disruption of order, to establish estrangement, to inaugurate a new way of seeing and thinking the body. This dissertation aims to investigate practices, self-care and performativity in the body constitution of queers characters in the cinema of Pedro Almodóvar. In order to do so, it appropriates the concepts of subjectivities, practices and care of himself, performativity, body, heterotopy and, methodologically, uses a deconstructionist perspective and filmic analysis to perceive the performativity and self-practices of the characters. As a clipping and object of analysis, we selected the characters Tina and Pablo from Pedro Almodóvar's Law of Desire (1987). Such characters have polymorphous sexualities, allowing us to perceive how the processes of self-constitution occur and show perspectives of sexuality subversion. Their bodies are plastic, flexible, transgressors and indicate an agonistic quest in creating an aesthetic ethical truth about themselves. In this study, we are interested in discussing the queer body and how it constitutes a heterotopy, that is, the techniques, the cares and the practices of the self by which this body subverts the previously determined spaces and determinations of the body of the relations of power imposed through the device of sexuality inaugurating counter space. It is against the triple knowledge-power-subject that defines the device of sexuality that these subjects put themselves. This is because the queer is already an overlapping of social positions, a displacement to the margin, are boundary and deviant bodies that are not content to cross the binary divisions but live on the border. To define the queer body as a heterotopy, is to understand it by subversion of the natural order. It is to see it in the modification of the spaces and positions of the discourses of normatizing sexuality. Studying it under this configuration enables the communication to understand it, immersed in a culture, from traces of an event. It is in this body that cries, that laughs, that makes party (that is a party) that are locked relations of power and is in them that they transit, establishing resistances, if doing, being and surviving.

Abstract:
Despite, or perhaps because of, the brevity and sketchiness of Foucault's accounts of heterotopia, the subsequent uses of the notion have been profuse as well as startling in their range and diversity. Many studies have tended to identify heterotopia with features of a particular era or a specific site, text or project. In contrast, this thesis starts by situating the concept within Foucault's overall spatial analyses. The thesis makes a thorough investigation into the various uses of space across Foucault's early works. It is argued that although involving marginal or minor texts, the concept of heterotopia nevertheless provides an important key to understanding Foucault's strategic wider use of space, a certain spatial way or play of thinking. Secondly, the thesis draws an important distinction between the concepts of heterotopia and utopia. The thesis outlines how heterotopias formulate and apply utopias in a potent mix of the ideal and real, without postulating any anticipatory hope. Thirdly, the thesis examines various sites in terms of what Foucault calls `heterotopology', investigating the possibility of a systematic description of these different spaces, using as examples the spatio-temporal features of the garden and the cemetery. Fourthly, the thesis explores how the mutative and adaptable qualities of heterotopian sites are particularly suited to various ways of governing people. The moral geography of the modem cemetery is used to illustrate clearly the broad application of a utilitarian philosophy as well as the diversity and breadth of techniques of governance in England during the first half of the nineteenth century. Fifthly, the thesis also argues that the spatio-temporal ambiguities and the connectivity of these spaces make them particularly productive dispositifs, both actual devices of government and tools for analysing specific cultural and historical practices. Finally, the thesis analyses contemporary cemeteries as particularly concentrated forms of heterotopia.

This thesis is an exploratory study of the novel The Young Törless, as a Bildungsroman and as heterotopia. For this, it took into account the point view of Foucault's about modernity and heterotopias of crisis crossed by the literary language. In this sense we studied some of the works of this author, in addition, of course, other authors in order to maintain a dialogue about the subject. Between the work of Foucault, it should be noted: The Order of Things, Discipline and Punish: The birth of the Prison; The Order of Discourse, Microphysics of Power, Dits et Écrits 3, and Le Corps Utopique - Les Heterotopies. The object of this thesis is the Bildungsroman as an original heterotopic place. The child development grows at the confluence of the two heterotopies: boarding school and adolescence. In the novel, the construction of the subjectivity is given by the forms of discourse production, by the power of relationships and affection in interpersonal relationships networks that are woven and woven as the narrative progresses. According to the adopted perspective, we studied the philosophical influences present in the novel and tried to show that The Young Törless as a Bildungsroman and as heterotopia exposes the relationships that underlie Törless subjectivity construction while he attends the boarding school in the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Alfred Kubin’s Traumland portfolio (1922) is the most personal and complex, yet understudied, work of the artist’s career. By comprehensively analysing his life and works, context and personal writings, this thesis explains Kubin’s portfolio as a project for mapping his inner landscapes, which draw directly from his oneiric experiences and from the bond with his environment. The study is framed within the context that embraced the beginning of Expressionism until 1920, and assesses the importance of the Kubinian works within that period. The image of the city in Expressionism is analysed through different typologies exhibited in Art and Literature, to which Kubin contributed. Concepts of Stimmung, heterotopia, and ‘collective memory’ are applied to explore his artistic shift from city to nature, something shared with other artists of the interwar period. The synthesis of findings culminate in the technical and symbolic analysis of Traumland and the prototype of the Kubinian landscape.

ABSTRACT: The on-going appropriation of the soils, interstices and hills, leaves on the natural topography of the territory, traces of an inseparable permanence, reflex of memories and identity. From the excess construction and pronounced deformation of the Rio Seco valley arises the proposal of a Natural Park, where the end goal is to conciliate the structure of the green tissue with the city, creating a permeable boundary by reinstating its natural character. Due to the strong artificialization and changes on this landscape around one of these water lines, the ambition of returning it to its natural state is born, bringing back its past natural character. The Rio Seco valley emerges as the context of this urban intervention. At the same time, the intervention in this valley, a repository of memories, seeks to rediscover and enhance these experiences and the symbologies of the older times. The conceptual basis for the development of this project is Heterotopia, as the generator of form and content. In the same way we can find two memories of water on opposite sides of the valley bed, in what constitutes an old symmetry, we try to create a new one, this time on an axis perpendicular to the valley. In a void of the Rio Seco geological formation, this new symmetry, in a heterotopic exercise, mimics the characteristics and values of the existing place in the construction of the proposal of public baths that, once again, grasp the true nature of the memory of this place by taming the water for the benefit of Man.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this research was studied the free musical improvisations from an anarchist perspective, i.e., interested in anarchize the multiple relations associated to it. This is discussed by looking to questions methodologically influenced by Michel Foucault. One of them concerns to the way in which the performances are given, for which it is important the relations of the improviser with himself, with the other performers e how them both converge in the flow (the temporary unfolding of the performance). In this question it is dealt mostly with the researches of Manuel Falleiros and Rogério Costa. Other question concerns to the place (the physical space, geographically \"localizable\") in which those practices are realized, also evidencing the importance of the relations that go around the performances. For this are brought considerations from Costa, Chefa Alonso and David Bell, as well as the notion of heterotopia, coined by Foucault and associated to the anarchisms by Edson Passetti; and also my considerations related to the period in which I watched the rehearsals of Orquestra Errante (OE) - free improvisation group from USP, coordinated by the advisor of the present research. One last question concerns to the dissolution of the improviser by looking, for a clipping reason, mostly to its relations with himself (in multiple senses). For this, it is referred also to OE and it is made an use of the philosopher Max Stirner. It is also important to this work to oppose the inventions, with its courses and transitority, to the creation, that aspires to perfection and the finished.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the relationship between art, madness and polis from the bet that life may be permanently established as a work of art opened to variations and differences inherent in living. This cosmetic procedure demands the constitution of heterotopic space/time, able to simultaneously engender and shelter counterstance to the contemporary control and subjection policies. For this we discuss the institutions art, madness and polis, extracting of these stratified or stored forms, virtualities that make possible the emergence of minor modes, making them vary. We start with polis, immaterial and collective dimension of the cities, at the same time abstract machine of engendering forms that inhabit it, moving it and producing the way life take over these territories, to make visible how madness and art of living engender each other. We started from biographical, historical and literary fragments, to think about other ways of inhabiting and weaving trajectories in the city, urging a fabric of relations of self and word creation through the invention of other spaces between madness and art. From madness thought by Foucault as domesticated positivity by medical knowledge, we established series from tragic experience from outside, and, from this to the schizo flow, proposed by Deleuze and Guattari -to finally get a minor madness, madness that is first dissolution of identity and stabilized forms and that materializes delirium as aesthetic device of word creation. Finally, we get the art, moving it from the aesthetic object creation dimension, to think of it as an immanent dimension of self-living. At this point we make use of Nietzsche, Deleuze and Foucault to think life as experimentation that resists the traps that imprison it in pre-established models, life that create itself every moment as a work of art. Activating therefore, a minor art, art of living, embodying foucaultian proposition of an aesthetics of existence, procedure whereby it creates itself when creates another one in the world relationships. Therefore, aesthetics, ethical and political procedure. Unstabilized and discussed inicial forms polis, madness and art -, we take cases of Bispo do Rosário e Moacir, to investigate their trajectories, how it may be possible from their interlace, constituting stylizations of existence so that it makes derive from real and put ways of living into fiction. Finally, we turn to poetry, delirium of words, to rehearse possibilities of singular space/time creation, minor heterotopics, effectively performed utopia species, like Foucault says, allow us to make life a work of art.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the processes of production, consumption and representation of the old city of Hebron, West Bank, Palestine as an ‘other space’ or heterotopia, that is, as a space that deviates from normality and is tainted by contradictions, shifting meanings and notions of “otherness”. I argue that there are several representations of space present in these processes as different actors and agents relate to, make use of and accumulate different kinds of capital from the old city. Previous studies on Palestine often focus on occupation and resistance but fail to problematize the ways in which these concepts are classed, gendered, localized, globalized and involved in several interrelating systems of meaning. Having done fieldwork with Palestinian and international NGOs, volunteers, activists, tourists guides and tourists I now aim to relate their representations of the old city to that of old city residents and discuss how space and power might be understood in a process of capitalizing from an occupied zone and the emplacement of a ‘deviant’ population within it. I suggest that to better understand the everyday life of occupation we have to deconstruct romanticized notions of Palestinian and Hebronite resistance and occupation and trace the ways these concepts are socially and spatially (re)created.

Abstract:
In the beginning of my research I focused on transformations of the urban leftover and void space found in between buildings, street networks, parks or other institutionalized public spaces into urban places of character. By studying the spatial qualities of different places and their relation to human activities in those places I came up with the main question of my thesis: Can a space be designed loose and/or can it be loosened by design? The concept of “heterotopia”, as described by Michel Foucault in his essay “Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias”, is a place functioning in nonhegemonic conditions, the place of “otherness” that has more layers of meaning than meet the eye. That concept proved to be the best description and the bounding frame of the design part of my research.

Abstract:
This study provides an examination and application of heterotopic dérive, a concept that combines spatial theories originated by Foucault and psychogeographical methods advocated by the Situationists, as enacted within theatrical performance spaces. The first chapter reviews theories related to space, place, and heterotopias, as well as the psychogeographical methods of the Situationists, particularly the dérive. The literature review is augmented with accounts of my experiences of serendipitous heterotopic dérive over a period of several years as a cast member in, or a technical director for, theatrical productions in the Department of Communication Studies Black Box Theatre. Based on the review, I postulate that heterotopic dérive is a potentially valuable phenomenon that performance studies scholar/artists can utilize consciously in the rehearsal process for mounting theatrical performances. To test this proposition, I worked collaboratively with a theatrical cast to craft a devised performance, Desire Lines, with a conscious effort to engender heterotopic dérive in the process of creating the performance. This performance served as the basis for the second chapter of the study, which analyzes and discusses of the results of that investigation. This project enhances understanding of the significance of the places and spaces in which performers practice their craft, and argues for the potential of recognizing and utilizing the agency of heterotopic spaces such as the Black Box.

Abstract:
By analyzing eight plays taking place in urban no-man’s-lands, which we have grouped under the heading of what Jean-Pierre Sarrazac calls “no-man’s-land dramaturgy,” we attempt to show how modern and contemporary drama continues to reinvent itself through the adoption of other dramaturgic models. Our research is applied especially to one of these models – performance art. As Jacques Derrida says in regards to deconstruction, the authors of these plays, too, «think about this passage onward, about a limit, about an elsewhere-here-and-now»3 by the representation of an urban no-man’s-land. This heterotopian non-place allows them to reflect on the violence of the world even as they experiment with new forms of drama.By going out on that edge, that border, out to «an elsewhere of certitudes»4 these authors set in motion a drama which, coming as it does after the catastrophe of the second world war, after the fall of leftist utopias, on the heels of madly spiraling capital, seeks to pose questions rather than provide answers in a Brechtian sense. Through this deconstruction and by the now adoption of performative elements in the treatment of time, space and presence of the author and of the character, authors Harold Pinter, Botho Strauss, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Edward Bond, Rodrigo Garcia, Tim Etchells, Victor Viviescas and Carolina Vivas put the audience directly in touch with the cruelty foretold by Artaud, which isn’t limited to imitation but is also an experience of the present – that of the void

Abstract:
This critical commentary argues that the novels submitted (emphasis on Ammonite, The Blue Place, and Hild, with three others, Slow River, Stay, and Always briefly referenced), form a coherent body of work which centres and norms the experience of the Other, particularly queer women. Close reading of the novels demonstrates how specific word-choice and metaphor locate the examination of a focalised character’s body in its physical and sensory setting. This examination of the body is referred to as embodiment. The commentary argues that embodiment of the focalised character activates neural mechanisms within the reader to create and sustain narrative empathy. It explores the creation of focalised heterotopias and the narrative consequences for characters traditionally marginalised in our society but not in their own.

Duffy, Christopher James. "Heterotopic space in selected works of J.G. Ballard." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12593/.

Full text
Abstract:
J. G. Ballard’s writing confronts the potentiality of space within the contemporary landscape, articulating complex relationships between the external environment and the individual. In 1983, Ballard stated: ‘[…] the sort of architectural spaces we inhabit are enormously important -- they are powerful. If every member of the human race were to vanish, our successors from another planet could reconstitute the psychology of the people on this planet from its architecture.’ Ballard’s texts are at all times bounded by a materiality which the reader is obliged to pay close attention to. This thesis takes a distinct approach to the spatial in the work of Ballard by concentrating on the external, physical environment and its psychological effects. It uses Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia as a theoretical underpinning to describe certain of Ballard’s spaces, a term richly generative for a number of reasons. Heterotopias are other spaces, off-centre with respect to the normal and everyday. They modify space in some way, drawing out latent possibilities. Ballard’s representations of space operate in a similar manner, from early short stories that contrast the quotidian with the fantastic, to investigations of postcivil society reconfiguring criminality in his final novels. This study approaches Ballard’s work in a chronological way, in order to reflect the way in which his heterotopic spaces map changing social conditions. This also enables consideration of Ballard’s developing textual spaces, and, following Foucault’s definition of disturbing literary heterotopias that destroy in advance syntax holding words and things together, Ballard’s unsettling of genre and traditional narrative structures will be examined along with the resistance of Ballard’s texts to easy categorisation and critical assimilation. Ultimately, in this thesis I argue that the spatial is a vital critical category for understanding Ballard’s work, conceiving him as an explorer of complex heterotopic space and writer of disruptive heterotopic literature.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The dissertation examines the disruption of 'orthotopographic' thought (in other words, in the right place) and the reverberation of 'heterotopology' (or, science of other places), from the 1960s onwards, in order to assess the role of the normative in architecture and urbanism. By examining trajectories of architectural knowledge in this specific period, it is suggested that the process by which architecture and urbanism transformed the utopian project into a diversity of 'other' - heterotopia - practices emphasised, paradoxically, the relevance of 'type' and typological variation. To this end, the research conducted for this dissertation explores the long history of the term heterotopia stretching from the emergence of the term in biology and medicine in the late nineteenth century to its (re)appearance in cultural studies in architecture in the late twentieth century. A similar parallel research on the notion of type across the same extended period discuss~s the various formulations of type within the natural sciences, medicine and the social sciences, and subsequent appropriations in architecture and urbanism. Two major research strategies are used : (1) a critical cross-reference analysis of processes and products within specific fields of knowledge and (2) case studies from architecture and urbanism in relation to their performance and the cultural and spatial practices that produced them. Special attention is dedicated to the international exhibitions Roma Interrota (Rome, 1978), 10 Immagini per Venezia (Venice, 1978-80) and International Bauausstellung Berlin (Berlin, 1979-87). These are studied to evaluate the renewed interest in 'type' and typological variation within 'specific' city formations, through the work of Aldo Rossi and John Hejduk, among others. In particular, the dissertation excises the ordering process of typological resemblance from heterotopia, in favour of an understanding of 'type' as process - not as schema formulated a priori but deduced from a series of instances - within typological series. The series of architectural conditions thus unveiled challenges the process of resemblance usually ascribed to the notion of heterotopia, reinstating a latent process of similitude. Heterotopia then is approached not as a question of the' other' (deferring a peripheral position), bur as a. (requestioning of the 'same' (reinstating a central position) in the discussion on the city and territory.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation was to research the field of production design as a sustainable heterotopic image during the various phases of film production. As production topic, The Lorax (Seuss 1971) was explored for its continuing relevant message of warnings against avarice. To provide the production with zeitgeist, the local Pretoria context was implemented to portray this universal narrative message. Information on production design is limited and inadequate. Sources ignore the influences and potential of production design behind the camera lens, which can be quite profound. Production design is influenced by the location and the location is influenced by the production design. Filmic structure and the traditional production design process were researched to provide a structure for the design process. To design the production, film industry conventions were employed with influences from the field of interior architecture. The result of the research is the first step to an inclusive look at production design and its place in the film industry, as well as in society. The result of the design process is a preproduction design package that can be handed over to production companies for further development. In order to complete a production design, the production designer needs a support network of various departments and resources. This dissertation, as the attempt of an individual, is a step to recognize the full potential of the field of production design, by means of a practical example – The Heterotopic Production Design for The Lorax.

Abstract:
The present work engages with the task of reinventing markets for degrowth by extending the work on heterotopia to the study of market practices. The literature review reveals that, as social and ecological constraints to economic growth have become increasingly apparent, emergent views on sustainability are calling for a transition towards degrowth rather than green growth. It is acknowledged that, whilst a transition to degrowth does not necessarily have to involve an abandonment of markets, the architecture of existing marketing systems has been shaped by two centuries of unprecedented economic growth. Therefore, if markets are to operate beyond the growth paradigm, it is argued that notions of the market will have to be radically reinvented. In this regard, scholars have argued alternative currencies as market devices that can be deployed with the aim of achieving a range of degrowth objectives, principally the creation of social capital, localization of economies, valuing non-productive labour, and enabling collaborative consumption to reduce environmental impacts of current life-styles. Given these arguments, alternative currency schemes have emerged as a suitable area of inquiry to explore the practices through which degrowth communities build sustainable systems of provisioning that retain a market form. An alternative currency scheme known as Puma, which is implemented in an area of Seville known as El Pumarejo, has been identified as a suitable empirical case to investigate these processes. The Puma is a type of alternative currency scheme known as Local Exchange Trading System (popularly known as LETS), which is implemented by a degrowth community of more than seven hundred members. Given that the emphasis was on markets as performances, which are enacted in webs of sociomaterial practices, this research was undertaken through an ethnographic strategy. Fieldwork was undertaken over a period of six weeks, which was followed by four revisits of approximately one-week duration each. Data was collected through a range of ethnographic techniques; including participant observation, ethnographic interviews, focus groups, research dairies and field notes, as well as organisational documents and archives. Research findings are presented in an ethnographic narrative, which has been articulated around a thematic analysis produced through a process of hermeneutic interpretation. Research findings highlight that the Puma currency scheme is embedded in concrete place dynamics, community ties and practical concerns, which are specific to the context of El Pumarejo. Moreover, this work identifies market practices and material devices through which a heterotopian market is enacted. For example, a detailed discussion is provided regarding exchange and bartering practices through which exchanges are accomplished between members. Furthermore, this research discusses various material devices employed in such practices, such as the Puma passbook or the CES software, which highlights the centrality of nonhuman elements in the enactment of heterotopian markets. Nevertheless, opening up the heterotopian market blackbox required an examination of infrastructural work through which members sustain the alternative currency scheme. In this regard, this work identifies a number of market-making practices beyond those of market exchange, namely epistemic practices, communication practices, community care practices, and enrolment practices, as well as other practices involved in the organisation of events such as Mercapuma and the Central de Abastecimiento. Ultimately, the symbolic dimension of the Puma currency scheme was examined. In this regard, members appear to be actively involved in the coproduction of meanings and identities which subvert prevalent notions of private and public property, gender, citizenship and consumerism, wealth and debt. Conclusions and implications of these findings for degrowth and marketing are discussed.

Abstract:
This paper aims to tell many different stories about life in Jerusalem. It is, in part, about the human suffering that exists under Israeli occupation. It is about the legitimacy of powerful narratives, despite inaccuracies and contradictions. It is about the resilience and tenacity of various communities on either side of a complex conflict. But primarily, this is a paper about borders: both physical and intangible boundaries that divide and define various communities in Jerusalem. Boundaries reveal a society through their construction, destruction, and definition of space. Because borders are demonstrated through anecdote, I examine boundaries largely through ethnography, exploring four specific types of boundaries and spaces: physical-political boundaries, boundaries based on cultural identity, gendered spaces, and heterotopias. Political and social shifts occur on boundaries where contact, conflict, and compromise exist. By examining sites that are particularly vulnerable to transition, we can better understand societal change and affect genuine resolution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The botanic garden is a space of leisure, scientific endeavour, passive recreation, education and conservation. These roles are contradictory, yet coexist 'happily' in a single space. The central aim of this thesis is to investigate the diversity of spaces and meanings in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens from the perspectives of both users and producers of this space. The fieldwork component involves interviews with staff members of the Botanical Services Team at the Gardens, and selected people at the Christchurch City Council offices who were connected with the Gardens in various ways. Additionally, I use the data gathered during my participation in tours of the Gardens. This thesis is both an historical and contemporary analysis of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. In a general history of the Western botanic garden, I show how colonialism, the Garden City movement and science shaped how botanic gardens functioned in society. This discussion contextualises the history of Christchurch's Botanic Gardens, which I compiled using archival material based on site, and the social practices that take place in this space. Using Foucault's concept of the heterotopia, I analyse the multiple and seemingly conflicting sites that exist inside the boundaries of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. I explain how these sites are able to coexist inside what Foucault terms a 'happy, universalizing' heterotopic space. I conclude that conflicts between science and leisure, and colonial spaces are not experienced inside the Gardens by visitors. In reality, for visitors to the Gardens, the paradoxical nature of the space and the resulting tension deriving from its multi-faceted role in society continue to exist in harmony. However, conflict between science and leisure is claimed by those who produce the Gardens. This is because the producers are conscious of the competing roles of the Gardens yet are involved in creating a space that caters for a diverse group of visitors.

Abstract:
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the pathological formation of ectopic bone and can be a devastating complication of military injuries. It causes multiple problems, including prosthetic limb fitting difficulties and ankylosis, ultimately causing loss of mobility, independence, and dignity. There is no effective prophylaxis and the only treatment is surgery, which causes rehabilitation delays and risks of bleeding and nerve injury. This work aimed to develop a new therapy for HO. A review of mineralised tissue analytical methods was performed and used to guide the study of human HO samples using X-ray micro computed-tomography, X-ray fluorescence, synchrotron X-ray diffraction/nano-tomography, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Screening of therapies demonstrated that hexametaphosphate (HMP) could dissolve hydroxyapatite (the mineral component of bone) under physiological conditions. Formulation engineering principles were applied to control this effect temporally and anatomically. A murine HO model was developed and used for feasibility testing of injected HMP as an HO therapy, showing that it had no adverse effect on normal bone. In summary, this project revealed the physicochemical structure of HO in unprecedented detail, discovered and developed a novel therapy, set up an animal model of HO, and showed that injected HMP is feasible in this model.

In the present urban space, where an individual is exposed to the conditions of heterogeneity and anonymity, a conventional Bodybuilding Gym opens up certain issues of emplacement of un/nder-spoken men's body and its close(t)ed placement in the society. While the rituals of entering and exiting the gym and 'building' the muscularity raise questions of men's reflected societal states in North America, the changing social appreciation of the 'new' body images, and emerging holistic approach of wellness of body-mind have become the thresholds to rethink the previously hyper-masculine gym space and to reinvent a way to accommodate these new conditions. I have explored the design of a contemporary gym as a subterranean-heterotopic- site rooted in the current urban context to reflect its various and changing socio-spatial identities of each user. The design focus is to recognize the updated characteristics of the user spaces when the gym is introduced with the new programs of Totality of Body-Mind, or, a further embodied Mind Zone coming into the body activity program concepts, to create new physical and psychological inter-relationships, or Proximity of Heterotopic Stages, to the individual users.

The research aimed to scrutinize the memories relating to "Lighthouse and Joan Black," in Olivedos - PB (1940-1970). Space and commercial sexual exchanges, understand the "Lighthouse" among other settings, as a place and practiced as a heterotopic space deviation from theorists such as Foucault (2001) and Certeau (1994). I made use of the oral method and from there I interviewed eleven people selected according to age and knowledge of the historical facts of Olivedos linked to the Lighthouse and Joan Black. For reasons of memory discussion embasei me in theoretical as Candau (2011), with their ratings of memory and Montenegro (2007), for discussion of orality. The look of the research was guided, in the first chapter to Joan Black discussion as protagonist Lighthouse, historicizing the term "black" and their representations to understand how the name of Joan began to be accompanied by the term in the sense surname. In the second chapter problematizei the identity configurations Joan Francelino Lima, comprising from Hall (2000, p. 108), that identities are "fragmented and fractured," multiple. Also in this chapter, I presented the Joan Black tactics for meeting sexual partners and their encounter with the Catholic Church. In the third chapter, I analyzed the Lighthouse and its representations to Olivedos as "practiced place," multiple and named according to the configuration assigned by popular. In the fourth chapter, I analyzed the historical plot that led to deactivation of the lighthouse at the expense of the Municipality of urbanization process. So the historiographical operation here is woven from the space for discussion, as well as Joan identities as protagonist Lighthouse and representation of the History of Women in Olivedos-PB. Thus, these and other stories about Joan and the Lighthouse will be found here from what makes the historian and will be representations of Paraiba history

Fernandes, Teresa X. "The postanarchist, an activist in a 'heterotopia' : building an ideal type." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2018. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/28486.

Full text
Abstract:
The Postanarchist, an activist in a heterotopia : building an ideal type is the theme of this doctoral thesis. The main aim is to elaborate a design for the postanarchist figure, picking up its main characteristics from the work of the postanarchist Saul Newman. The argument also bears on two other authors: the post-structuralist Michel Foucault, considered a strong influence of postanarchism, and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, the first author who labelled himself as anarchist and the first to embrace anarchy positively. Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari are introduced as mediators to provide deeper understanding of the main authors. The dissertation offers a novel theoretical revision of postanarchism through Michel Foucault and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. It notes the close similarities between Foucault and Proudhon - in terms of concepts of space, struggle, movement, necessity and consequently anarchy; establishes a conceptual net around them and uses Proudhon s thinking to fill the bibliographic gaps in Foucault s writings. The goal is to better understand the thought and the activist practice of Foucault in terms of anarchism and, in the last instance, to better grasp the postanarchism of Saul Newman in order to carve the postanarchist ideal type. Postanarchism is understood as the constitution of autonomous spaces; the notions of space and heterotopias - the Foucauldian space - are central in the dissertation. Accordingly, the thesis is structured by three hypotheses: (i) postanarchism is space constitution; (ii) the constitution of space is a struggle; (iii) to establish space is to survive. The sub-concepts of the dissertation are: movement, necessity, struggle, power subject, body, sign, truth and utopia. The thesis provides an interpretative analysis of primary sources - books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets and manifestos - of the three main authors supported by secondary commentaries. It departs from conventions by adopting a theoretical approach inspired by Foucault s solar and circular worldview (and Tommaso Campanella s City of the Sun). This facilitates the fluid organization of the argument and avoids imposing linearity on the content, thus highlighting the interrelation between content and the structure of the argument. This thesis is an exposition, an interpretation that develops new knowledge through the connections and methods that enable us to better know who the postanarchist activist is.

MacInnes, Scott. "The genetics of osteolysis and heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/17310/.

Full text
Abstract:
Aseptic loosening, the clinical end point of osteolysis, is the most common complication resulting in revision surgery of total hip arthroplasty (THA). It is the result of focal peri-prosthetic inflammatory bone loss at the prosthesis-host interface, and is driven by particulate wear debris generated primarily at the articular bearing surface. There is variation between individuals in their inflammatory response to wear debris suggesting a genetic component. Candidate gene studies have shown that susceptibility to osteolysis associates with polymorphic variation in genes encoding several inflammatory cytokines and bone regulatory molecules. Better understanding of the genetic component is required to address the pathogenesis of aseptic loosening. Advances in high throughput genotyping and mapping of genomic variation has made it possible to examine common genetic variation or quantitative traits as possible risk factors of disease through genome wide association studies (GWAS). This thesis which forms my PhD candidature, describes several studies undertaken to understand the biological processes contributing to osteolysis. We have followed the advances in genotyping and bioinformatics progressing from a candidate gene study to undertaking whole genome analysis. We describe the largest candidate gene study to date looking at tagging SNPs in genes thought to play important roles in bone turnover and inflammatory pathways. We have undertaken the first GWAS for osteolysis susceptibility and time to prosthesis failure following THA in over 3,700 patients. During the recruitment process of the replication cohort from the Norwegian arthroplasty register we have proved the feasibility of using such registries for recruitment to answer research questions and establish linked biobanks for the study of musculoskeletal disease. Heterotopic ossification is also a common complication following THA and similarly its pathogenesis is poorly understood. We also describe a GWAS looking for variants associated with the development of HO and its severity following THA.

Hyatt, Joana S. "Creating a Heterotopic Space: Reflections on Pre-service Art Educators’ Narratives." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500166/.

Abstract:
My autobiographical research focuses on creating digital heterotopias through social media platforms, providing safe spaces which allow art teacher candidates the opportunity to reflect upon their practicum experiences and question the status quo of institutional myths and inherited discourses in teacher fieldwork. Functions of heterotopic space link together and reflect other pedagogical sites, including institutional spaces. Heterotopias are often designed to be temporal and hidden from public view but are necessary enclaves for exploring non-hierarchical paradigms. Such temporary communal spaces can lead one to a personal praxis in uncovering what sometimes is never fully explored, our own autobiographical narrative of teaching. By creating a digital space utilized by art education student teachers in the midst of their practicum, I recalled my forgotten autobiography of student teaching, where memories of inequities and suppression of difference emerged. Through the lenses of critical theory and resistance theory, this study examines possibilities of crafting digital spaces as forms of artistic resistance and identity reconstruction zones. As such, the goal of examining the student teaching practicum concerning; power inequities, evaluation methods, standardization of teaching, evolving teacher identities, and the social environment of teaching, is to illustrate hegemonic processes and visualize spaces of possibility to deconstruct self and (re) imagine alternative ways of being teachers. Weaving in multiple stories of fieldwork experience allowed for a collocation in visualizing a space of unfolding inquiry, recognizing multiple genres of knowing through the qualitative and emergent methodologies of narrative inquiry and arts-based research.

This thesis seeks to understand through the perspective of heterotopia and remedial education, as set educational practice, performed by correcting and moralizing seized by single women-mothers, in Fortaleza, collected when the institution created for this purpose called Good Institute pastor. This entity performed charity work and was directed by the religious of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. Mission was to house single young people that bore the act of getting pregnant without marriage. By the lack of written sources, resort to narratives of Maria Francisca Santos (Dona Chiquinha) over the period out internal and cook in that institution. His life story is considered in this research the main source of research on the Good Shepherd Institute. The terms "correction and moralization" are understood as learned in this study that aims to be practiced, and that is instilled in people's behavior. The idea of power exercised over themselves from the inside is important for the understanding of educational practices, initiated in Fortaleza, from the second half of the nineteenth century and, in some ways, in many of these institutions would endure after World War II . That is why I consider the Good Shepherd Institute as a place where one develops a heterotopia (agglutination hetero = other + topia = space). Foucault uses the term heterotopia to describe spaces that have multiple layers of meaning or relationships to other places and whose complexity can not be seen immediately. In this case, I use the concept of heterotopia of deviance and purification, understood as a space that is isolated and impenetrable to the public without permission, used for purification, whether for religious, remedial or hygienic reasons.
