Abstract:
This paper proposes an algorithm for the conversion of raster data to hexagonal DGGSs in the GPU by redevising the encoding and decoding mechanisms. The researchers first designed a data structure based on rhombic tiles to convert the hexagonal DGGS to a texture format acceptable for GPUs, thus avoiding the irregularity of the hexagonal DGGS. Then, the encoding and decoding methods of the tile data based on space-filling curves were designed, respectively, so as to reduce the amount of data transmission from the CPU to the GPU. Finally, the researchers improved the algorithmic efficiency throu

Abstract. The past few decades have seen the development of automatically feature labelling when manual label placement was thought to be time and labour consuming. Emerging techniques like volunteered geographic information (VGI) collection are making label placement more complexed with many features in a limited space, especially for points of interest (POI). In order to improve the quality and the efficiency of point feature labelling, there have been massive researches focusing on issues like position models, assessment criteria and optimization method

Theoretical calculations for a single element of a hexagonal raster are considered. It has been analyzed and proven that the hexagonal lattice gives the lowest ratio of perimeter to area covering the plane of any equilateral polygons. Thus, based on the calculations, the edge aliasing effect is reduced to a minimum for the hexagonal lattice.

Discrete global grid systems (DGGSs) are an emerging multiresolution 3D model used to integrate and analyze big earth data. The characteristic of multiresolution is usually realized by hierarchically subdividing cells on the sphere using certain refinement. This paper introduces mixed aperture three- and four- icosahedral hexagonal DGGSs using two types of refinement, the various combinations of which can provide more resolutions compared with pure aperture hexagonal DGGSs and can flexibly design the aperture sequence according to the target resolutions. In this study, a numerical dynamic analysis of ceiling raster panels was performed. The analysis was conducted on panels designed with inspiration from bionics. The purpose of the analysis was to enable optimisation of the location of the holes in the designed slabs in order to achieve the preferred dynamic properties, including the natural frequencies of the slabs and an appropriate airflow to avoid the occurrence of resonance. Three different types of panels were used and a total of fifteen panels were designed in terms of their geometry, with circular, elliptical, and hexagonal perforations

Abstract:
Global small-scale hydrological modeling datasets are in demand in many geosciences. The results of corresponding simulations include flow directions, catchment area, watershed delineation and stream networks. Regardless of the method of obtaining global product, one will face the task of processing at least continent-scale datasets, which may be time-consuming or hardware-expensive. The recent research on hydrological modeling shows that calculations performed on a hexagonal mesh grid outperformed those on a rectangular one. Therefore, there is increasing interest in globalscale hydrological

Abstract In this paper, a novel hybrid infill pattern is introduced denoted as Hexagonal Zigzag pattern and its mechanical properties are investigated through experiments. The novel pattern is island type with zigzag raster repeating in a regular periodic hexagonal pattern. The size of the hexagon and the infill density can be controlled by the quantity and spacing of the zigzag raster in each hexagon cell. A mathematical model on the relationship between these two raster parameters and their effect on infill density is established. This model allows the scope of manipulating the infill parame

Abstract Structures made by additive manufacturing processes are highly anisotropic and carry defects. Complete elimination of these defects is not possible, and these defects degrade the mechanical properties (such as elastic modulus, tensile strength, and fracture strain). In the present study, mechanical properties are quantified as a function of building parameters, in particular, filling patterns, raster angle and orientation of build direction with respect to that of loading, in polylactic acid (PLA). The tensile strength of 3D printed PLA is the same for hexagonal and linear pattern fil
