Abstract:
Bitter melon (Momordica charantia; BM) has been shown to ameliorate diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. To examine the effect of BM supplementation on cell size and lipid metabolism in adipose tissues, three groups of rats were respectively fed a high-fat diet supplemented without (HF group) or with 5 % lyophilised BM powder (HFB group), or with 0·01 % thiazolidinedione (TZD) (HFT group). A group of rats fed a low-fat diet was also included as a normal control. Hyperinsulinaemia and glucose intolerance were observed in the HF group but not in HFT and HFB groups. Although the number of large adipocytes (>180 μm) of both the HFB and HFT groups was significantly lower than that of the HF group, the adipose tissue mass, TAG content and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity of the HFB group were significantly lower than those of the HFT group, implying that BM might reduce lipogenesis in adipose tissue. Experiment 2 was then conducted to examine the expression of lipogenic genes in adipose tissues of rats fed low-fat, HF or HFB diets. The HFB group showed significantly lower mRNA levels of fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase-1, lipoprotein lipase and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein than the HF group (P < 0·05). These results indicate BM can reduce insulin resistance as effective as the anti-diabetic drug TZD. Furthermore, BM can suppress the visceral fat accumulation and inhibit adipocyte hypertrophy, which may be associated with markedly down regulated expressions of lipogenic genes in the adipose.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction The clinical and polysomnographic meaning of the Alternating Leg Muscle Activation (ALMA) and Hypnagogic Foot Tremor (HFT) patterns in children is not known. Methods A descriptive study was carried out to identify the prevalence and polysomnographic characteristics of ALMA and HFT sequences in a sample of 122 children sequentially admitted in the sleep laboratory, with the analysis of clinical and demographic characteristics of the ALMA/HFT group in relation to a comparison group without this condition, paired by age and gender. Results Sample prevalence was 14.8% for any HFT/ALMA event, 13.1% for ALMA and 10.7% for HFT. In the HFT/ALMA group, the mean age was 8 years old (2-12 years old), 66.7% of males. Obstructive Sleep Apnea was observed in 75% of children, but HFT / ALMA sequences only occasionally occurred in association with respiratory events. The use of medications with monoaminergic activity was associated with the occurrence of HFT/ALMA, p=0,019. There was higher N1 sleep content in the HFT / ALMA group, p=0,0301. There was no significant difference between both groups regarding the other clinical-demographic or polysomnographic parameters analyzed. Autonomic activation represented by heart rate fluctuations often occurred in association with the HFT / ALMA sequences, irrespective of the occurrence of arousals, awakenings, other motor or respiratory events. Conclusion HFT / ALMA is a frequent condition in children that are referred to the sleep lab.The stereotypy of the HFT / ALMA series suggests that their origin might be motor central pattern generators, which are potentially influenced by substances with monoaminergic effect. The finding of higher superficial sleep content in children with HFT / ALMA may indicate greater susceptibility to alteration of pediatric sleep architecture by such subtle motor events. The possibility of clinical consequences and cardiovascular diseases should be considered in relation to the association of HFT / ALMA with observed autonomic activation. Support None.

Abstract:
Using unique transactions data for individual high-frequency trading (HFT) firms in the U.K. equity market, we examine the extent to which the trading activity of individual HFT firms is correlated with each other and the impact on price efficiency. We find that HFT order flow, net positions, and total volume exhibit significantly higher commonality than those of a comparison group of investment banks. However, intraday HFT order flow commonality is associated with a permanent price impact, suggesting that commonality in HFT activity is information based and so does not generally contribute to undue price pressure and price dislocations.

Abstract:
It is known that there is a positive correlation between order book imbalance and future returns. Although some previous studies using actual trading data have suggested that high-frequency trading (HFT) may take this characteristic into account, HFT firms have not disclosed their specific strategies. Furthermore, there has been a long-standing debate in the empirical research field as to whether HFT is the cause of flash crashes, but no final conclusion has been reached. In the present study, we analysed the impacts of HFT taking into account the correlation between order book imbalance and future returns on a stable market and on a market with a flash crash, using agent-based simulations, which are said to be capable of analysing events in their essence. We also analysed how HFT investment performance differs between those two market conditions. The results showed that HFT has the effect of further stabilizing the market when the market is stable but does not take place during flash crashes and so is unable to affect the market either for the good or the bad. The results also suggest that the proposed HFT’s performance is more sensitive to market price fluctuations than conventional HFT (i.e., HFT following a position market-making strategy) and tends to have high risk and high returns.

Journal of the American Academy of Audiology 29, no. 02 (2018): 106–17. http://dx.doi.org/10.3766/jaaa.16077.

Abstract:
AbstractDiagnosing conductive conditions in newborns is challenging for both audiologists and otolaryngologists. Although high-frequency tympanometry (HFT), acoustic stapedial reflex tests, and wideband absorbance measures are useful diagnostic tools, there is performance measure variability in their detection of middle ear conditions. Additional diagnostic sensitivity and specificity measures gained through new technology such as sweep frequency impedance (SFI) measures may assist in the diagnosis of middle ear dysfunction in newborns. The purpose of this study was to determine the test performance of SFI to predict the status of the outer and middle ear in newborns against commonly used reference standards.Automated auditory brainstem response (AABR), HFT (1000 Hz), transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and SFI tests were administered to the study sample.A total of 188 neonates (98 males and 90 females) with a mean gestational age of 39.4 weeks were included in the sample. Mean age at the time of testing was 44.4 hr.Diagnostic accuracy of SFI was assessed in terms of its ability to identify conductive conditions in neonates when compared with nine different reference standards (including four single tests [AABR, HFT, TEOAE, and DPOAE] and five test batteries [HFT + DPOAE, HFT + TEOAE, DPOAE + TEOAE, DPOAE + AABR, and TEOAE + AABR]), using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and traditional test performance measures such as sensitivity and specificity. The test performance of SFI against the test battery reference standard of HFT + DPOAE and single reference standard of HFT was high with an area under the ROC curve (AROC) of 0.87 and 0.82, respectively. Although the HFT + DPOAE test battery reference standard performed better than the HFT reference standard in predicting middle ear conductive conditions in neonates, the difference in AROC was not significant. Further analysis revealed that the highest sensitivity and specificity for SFI (86% and 88%, respectively) was obtained when compared with the reference standard of HFT + DPOAE. Among the four single reference standards, SFI had the highest sensitivity and specificity (76% and 88%, respectively) when compared against the HFT reference standard. The high test performance of SFI against the HFT and HFT + DPOAE reference standards indicates that the SFI measure has appropriate diagnostic accuracy in detection of conductive conditions in newborns. Hence, the SFI test could be used as adjunct tool to identify conductive conditions in universal newborn hearing screening programs, and can also be used in diagnostic follow-up assessments.

Abstract:
Humidified high-flow therapy (HFT) is a noninvasive respiratory therapy, typically delivered through a nasal cannula interface, which delivers a stable fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) at flow rates of up to 60 L·min−1. It is well-tolerated, simple to set up and ideally applied at 37°C to permit optimal humidification of inspired gas. Flow rate and FIO2 should be selected based on patients' inspiratory effort and severity of hypoxaemia. HFT yields beneficial physiological effects, including improved mucociliary clearance, enhanced dead space washout and optimisation of pulmonary mechanics. Robust evidence supports its application in the critical care setting (treatment of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and prevention of post-extubation respiratory failure) and emerging data supports HFT use during bronchoscopy, intubation and breaks from noninvasive ventilation or continuous positive airway pressure. There are limited data on HFT use in patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure, as an adjunct to pulmonary rehabilitation and in the palliative care setting, and further research is needed to validate the findings of small studies. The COVID-19 pandemic raises questions regarding HFT efficacy in COVID-19-related hypoxaemic respiratory failure and concerns regarding aerosolisation of respiratory droplets. Clinical trials are ongoing and healthcare professionals should implement strict precautions to mitigate the risk of nosocomial transmission.Educational aimsProvide a practical guide to HFT setup and delivery.Outline the physiological effects of HFT on the respiratory system.Describe clinical applications of HFT in adult respiratory and critical care medicine and evaluate the supporting evidence.Discuss application of HFT in COVID-19 and aerosolisation of respiratory droplets.

Abstract:
Since China’s first stock index futures, China Securities Index 300 (CSI300) stock index futures were published in 2010, and China’s stock index futures market is now in a period of rapid development and play a key role in price discovery. During 2014 to 2015, China’s stock index futures market fluctuated abnormally, and the overuse of high-frequency trading (HFT) strategies in the stock index futures market was blamed as the main reason of the abnormal volatility. To lower down market fluctuation, the regulatory institute then announced a series of trade restriction policy to prevent the overuse of HFT behaviour. However, until now, the impact of such trade restriction policy for HFT remains uncertain. To tackle this issue, based on minute-level HFT data from the CSI 300 index futures market, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between HFT and the exogenous liquidity risk and how HFT affects China’s stock index futures market on its liquidity using the liquidity-adjusted value at risk (LVaR) model. The findings indicate that HFT improves the return of the liquidity provider and reduces the exogenous liquidity risk significantly.

Abstract:
Upregulated meteorin-like (Metrnl) protein in peripheral tissues because of exercise-induced increases in intramuscular Metrnl may effectively alleviate obesity by improving metabolism in whole-body tissues. The objective was to analyse the effects of regular treadmill exercise on Metrnl levels in muscle and peripheral tissues of chronic high-fat diet- (HFD-) induced obese mice. Forty-eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were first divided equally into normal-diet (CO) and high-fat diet (HF) groups. Following 16 weeks of a HFD, each group was again split equally into control (CO, HF) and training groups (COT, HFT). The HFT group expressed significantly higher phospho-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), AMPK activity, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α(PGC-1α) in muscle tissue than the HF group (p<0.05). Similar to muscle energy sensing network protein levels, the HFT group also expressed significantly higher muscle, plasma, and adipose tissue Metrnl (p<0.05). Moreover, regular exercise increased acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX-1) and monoglyceride lipase (MGL) expression in adipose tissue (p<0.05) and significantly decreased abdominal fat mass (p<0.05). This study suggests that exercise-induced muscle Metrnl effectively reduces fat accumulation through the increase of Metrnl in adipose tissue, which may be a therapeutic target for chronic obesity.

Abstract:
Background: High flow therapy (HFT) has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective noninvasive respiratory support technique for the treatment of pre-term infants in neonatal intensive care. Objectives: Our objective was to develop a quantitative framework based on available evidence to estimate the economic impact of adoption of a HFT respiratory support strategy compared to current standard of care. Methods: Model parameters were derived from a recent study comparing respiratory modality utilization between five US-based neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) adopting a HFT strategy and a larger pool of NICUs in the Vermont-Oxford Network (VON), and from single center experience. We computed the total cost difference between the respiratory support strategies based on published cost data. Parameter uncertainty was tested in sensitivity analyses. Results: The constructed model projected expected cost savings of $2,317 for the HFT strategy for the base case. Results were sensitive to length of HFT use, length of CMV, cost of HFT, and length of nCPAP support. Conclusions: Adoption of a HFT strategy appears to be associated with meaningful savings in total NICU episode of care costs, primarily because of reductions in the time of conventional mechanical ventilation. Further research is warranted to substantiate these findings.

Abstract:

High frequency trading (HFT) is a kind of algorithmic trading which implements several strategies that result in a high number of intraday messages that are sent to exchanges and other trading venues. High frequency traders (HFTs) are key players in secondary markets given the number of orders and trades they generate. In this text, we explore the boundaries of this phenomenon and the associated risks. We investigate the regulation goals, the mechanisms to achieve such goals and the obstacles ahead. Then we evaluate whether it is necessary to create new rules or update the existing ones in Brazilian law – and what these new rules could be. The formulation of regulatory responses start with the analysis of a theoretical framework for the dynamics of capital markets, its economic functions and how Law can play a key part in this scenario. A critical study of HFTs enables us to assess its risks along with the risks of algorithmic trading in general, and, in addition, it is an invitation to rethinking how the market works, the goals that regulation can pursue and how they can be achieved. Understanding new technologies that emerge in capital markets is paramount before any risk assessment discussions in order to prevent hype and panic. This work also aims to provide an up to date description of the secondary market dynamics and how state-of-art trading technologies reshaped it.

Abstract:
This paper studies how high-frequency trading (HFT) affects the Swedish stock market quality based on volatility and liquidity measures. Previous studies show ambiguous results where a few propose that HFT deteriorates market quality by increasing volatility and decreasing liquidity while some studies point in the opposite direction.By setting up a simultaneous equations system with instrumental variables and estimating the parameters with Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM), this paper finds that in the majority of the investigated stocks high-frequency trading activity reduces bid ask spreads and therefore increases liquidity, i.e. enhancing market quality. Additionally, the results also show that the volatility decreases through high-frequency trading activity. Hence, both measures are indicating that the market quality is positively affected by high-frequency trading. However, interesting is the analysis and discussion on whether high-frequency trading strategies such as spoofing and layering potentially can contribute to false liquidity. This would mean that the market quality is impaired due to HFT. This paper also examines the reversed relationship, how the liquidity and volatility affect HFT activity and conclude that HFT is not affected by how liquid or volatile the market is.

Abstract:
The presence of toxic order ow and predatory HFT strategies in a multi-market setting are scarcely researched in the academic world. This thesis studies the toxicity levels of a set of markets by examining unconsolidated quote data and firm specific trade data. A method for deducing the markets toxicity levels is presented along with proxies for toxic order ow, namely: changes in spread and quoted volume, following a trade in a given market. We find both signs of toxicity and different toxicity levels between the markets. However, the results are lacking in statistical significance but they show that this field is of great interest for further research. Also, the methods proposed for deducing the toxicity levels are rudimentary but could serve well as a premise for further development.

Abstract:
The landscape of equity trading changed when computer algorithms commenced to analyse large volumes of stock market data faster than a fraction of a second. Advances in technology have enabled trading algorithms to initiate, route, and execute orders on aspects of market timing, optimising order quantity, and deciding price parameters with limited human intervention. The distinctive features of high-frequency trading are low latency, high order to trade ratio, co-location, and short holding periods. Besides contributing to profitability, cost efficiency, and competitiveness, it has also amplified issues such as systemic risk and market disruption.  European legal frameworks – in particular the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) and the Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) – have been and still are a response to this fairly new proprietary trading paradigm. This thesis interprets and analyses the risk mitigation and market manipulation requirements in order to clarify whether the legislation regarding high-frequency trading is compliant with the underlying appropriateness of MiFID II, MAR, and the Swedish Securities Act. The following two chapters provide an overview of the capital market with its participating actors and an outline of requirements for high-frequency trading investment firms. The ban on market manipulation is thereafter examined, systemised, and exemplified vis-à-vis fictitious transactions through manipulative schemes. Lastly, a case law analysis is conducted in respect of market abuse and defective trading algorithms.  This thesis finds plausible causation between defective trading algorithms, investor confidence, and market manipulation. Nevertheless, high-frequency trading per se is not considered to meet the necessary prerequisites for market manipulation stated in MAR. Information provision is one of the foremost tools to mitigate risk linked to systemic events and disruptive markets. However, too extensive requirements can potentially inhibit innovation and infringe legal rights related to inter alia, intellectual property, exempli gratia, trade secrets.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is increased activity in developing workflows and implementations in the context of urban energy analysis simulation based on 3D city models in smart cities. At the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart (HFT Stuttgart), an urban energy simulation platform called ‘SimStadt’ has successfully been developed. It uses the CityGML 3D city model to simulate the heat demand, photovoltaic potential, and other scenarios that provide dynamic simulation results in both space and time dimensions. Accordingly, a tool for managing dynamic data of the CityGML models is required. Earlier, the CityGML Application Domain Extension (ADE) had been proposed to support additional attributes of the CityGML model; however, there is still a lack of open-source tools and platforms to manage and distribute the CityGML ADE data efficiently. This article evaluates and compares alternative methods to manage dynamic simulation results of the 3D city model and visualise these data on the 3D web-based smart city application, including the use of SimStadt web services, databases, and OGC SensorThings API standard.

Abstract:
AbstractRisk assessment is of high importance when it comes to trading, investments, and other financial activities, as poor risk monitoring could lead to inefficient investments, loss of capital, and penalties by regulatory authorities. Thus, robust risk models, capable of yielding real-time results, are valuable assets for investment banking. This chapter introduces a financial tool that can provide risk assessment on Forex portfolios in (near) real-time and pre-trade analysis at rest. Financial risk is measured in terms of both Value at Risk and the Expected Shortfall, with the respective models utilizing not only statistical but also deep learning techniques that achieve accurate results. Moreover, the proposed application, based on state-of-the-art data management technologies, provides real-time risk assessments, utilizing the latest market data. These features along with the provided pre-trade analysis make this solution a valuable tool for practitioners in high frequency trading (HFT) and investment banking in general.

Abstract:
Abstract Preoperational testing of the first AP1000® pressurized water reactors took place in the fall and winter of 2016. This Hot Functional Testing (HFT) included observation of vibrations throughout the piping systems, and is required to be successfully completed before fuel load. During HFT, flow through the hot leg passes many piping intersections where instabilities such as vortex shedding create pressure pulsations. Coupling of the vortex shedding frequency and natural acoustic frequency of the piping sidebranch may lead to acoustic resonance of the system. This resonance condition is understood, but difficult to predict; therefore, the HFT plan included screening for such conditions based on ASME Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants vibration monitoring group (VMG). Vibration was observed in the Automatic Depressurization System (ADS) branch off the reactor coolant system hot leg that was potentially in a resonant condition. This paper details the identification, characterization, and analysis of the ADS vibration observed during HFT. Additional instrumentation was employed and data were gathered at varying conditions to determine the nature and extent of the vibrations. Demonstration of acceptable vibration levels in the ADS system was a key engineering accomplishment for AP1000® fuel load.

Nd-Hf isotope geochemistry and lithogeochemistry of the Rambler Rhyolite, Ming VMS deposit, Baie Verte Peninsula, Newfoundland: evidence for slab melting and implications for VMS localization. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/328988.

Full text
Abstract:
New high precision lithogeochemistry and Nd and Hf isotopic data were collected on felsic rocks of the Rambler Rhyolite formation from the Ming volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposit, Baie Verte Peninsula, Newfoundland. The Rambler Rhyolite formation consists of intermediate to felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks with U-shaped primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns with negative Nb anomalies, light rare earth element-enrichment (high La/Sm), and distinctively positive Zr and Hf anomalies relative to surrounding middle rare earth elements (high Zr-Hf/Sm). The Rambler Rhyolite samples have epsilon-Ndt = -2.5 to -1.1 and epsilon-Hft = +3.6 to +6.6; depleted mantle model ages are TDM(Nd) = 1.3-1.5 Ga and TDM(Hf) = 0.9-1.1Ga. The decoupling of the Nd and Hf isotopic data is reflected in epsilon-Hft isotopic data that lies above the mantle array in epsilon-Ndt -epsilon-Hft space with positive ?epsilon-Hft values (+2.3 to +6.2). These Hf-Nd isotopic attributes, and high Zr-Hf/Sm and U-shaped trace element patterns, are consistent with these rocks having formed as slab melts, consistent with previous studies. The association of these slab melt rocks with Au-bearing VMS mineralization, and their FI-FII trace element signatures that are similar to rhyolites in Au-rich VMS deposits in other belts (e.g., Abitibi), suggests that assuming that FI-FII felsic rocks are less prospective is invalid and highlights the importance of having an integrated, full understanding of the tectono-magmatic history of a given belt before assigning whether or not it is prospective for VMS mineralization.

Wei, Fulu, Ce Wang, Xiangxi Tian, Shuo Li, and Jie Shan. Investigation of Durability and Performance of High Friction Surface Treatment. Purdue University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317281.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) completed a total of 25 high friction surface treatment (HFST) projects across the state in 2018. This research study attempted to investigate the durability and performance of HFST in terms of its HFST-pavement system integrity and surface friction performance. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy-bauxite mortar. Field inspections were carried out to identify site conditions and common early HFST distresses. Cyclic loading test and finite element method (FEM) analysis were performed to evaluate the bonding strength between HFST and existing pavement, in particular chip seal with different pretreatments such as vacuum sweeping, shotblasting, and scarification milling. Both surface friction and texture tests were undertaken periodically (generally once every 6 months) to evaluate the surface friction performance of HFST. Crash records over a 5-year period, i.e., 3 years before installation and 2 years after installation, were examined to determine the safety performance of HFST, crash modification factor (CMF) in particular. It was found that HFST epoxy-bauxite mortar has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) significantly higher than those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures and Portland cement concrete (PCC), and good cracking resistance. The most common early HFST distresses in Indiana are reflective cracking, surface wrinkling, aggregate loss, and delamination. Vacuum sweeping is the optimal method for pretreating existing pavements, chip seal in particular. Chip seal in good condition is structurally capable of providing a sound base for HFST. On two-lane highway curves, HFST is capable of reducing the total vehicle crash by 30%, injury crash by 50%, and wet weather crash by 44%, and providing a CMF of 0.584 in Indiana. Great variability may arise in the results of friction tests on horizontal curves by the use of locked wheel skid tester (LWST) due both to the nature of vehicle dynamics and to the operation of test vehicle. Texture testing, however, is capable of providing continuous texture measurements that can be used to calculate a texture height parameter, i.e., mean profile depth (MPD), not only for evaluating friction performance but also implementing quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) plans for HFST.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this technical report is to present an overview of the current domestic hot water production systems that are typically in use in the residential buildings of the different countries of the world. One can clearly observe the large potential for the use of renewable energy sources and the energy efficiency improvement of the domestic hot water production systems it in many of those countries. The data of this report originates from various types of publications reporting typical domestic hot water production systems and energy sources in different countries. Nonetheless, this information is rarely established from large national surveys of dwellings. It should therefore be used as an estimate rather than a precise statistical overview. Many countries are not included in the table as it was impossible to find any information about them regarding domestic hot water production.
