Alexander, Samuel, and Bill Hibbard. "Measuring Intelligence and Growth Rate: Variations on Hibbard’s Intelligence Measure." Journal of Artificial General Intelligence 12, no. 1 (January 1, 2021): 1–25. http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/jagi-2021-0001.

Abstract:
Abstract In 2011, Hibbard suggested an intelligence measure for agents who compete in an adversarial sequence prediction game. We argue that Hibbard’s idea should actually be considered as two separate ideas: first, that the intelligence of such agents can be measured based on the growth rates of the runtimes of the competitors that they defeat; and second, one specific (somewhat arbitrary) method for measuring said growth rates. Whereas Hibbard’s intelligence measure is based on the latter growth-rate-measuring method, we survey other methods for measuring function growth rates, and exhibit the resulting Hibbard-like intelligence measures and taxonomies. Of particular interest, we obtain intelligence taxonomies based on Big-O and Big-Theta notation systems, which taxonomies are novel in that they challenge conventional notions of what an intelligence measure should look like. We discuss how intelligence measurement of sequence predictors can indirectly serve as intelligence measurement for agents with Artificial General Intelligence (AGIs).

A conviction that rock is the central manifestation of the post-War mass culture and the most common form of mass cultural activity, seems undoubted for rock analysts. The question as to whether rock music is able to play any significant role in a process of political change evokes, however, scepticism rather than endorsement (Rosselson 1979; Hibbard and Kaleialoha 1983; Orman 1984; Pattison 1987; Grossberg 1991).

Abstract:
AbstractThe Meade Basin, SW Kansas, yields a rich vertebrate fossil record from the late Cenozoic. Here, we review fossil ground squirrels (Sciuridae) from the region as a contribution to the broader Meade Basin Rodent Project. We recognize 14 species in seven genera: two species of giant ground squirrels (Paenemarmota Hibbard and Schultz, 1948) from the early Pliocene, and at least 12 species in six extant genera (Ammospermophilus Merriam, 1892; Otospermophilus Brandt, 1844; Ictidomys Allen, 1877; Poliocitellus Howell, 1938; Urocitellus Obolenskij, 1927; Cynomys Rafinesque, 1817) from the Pliocene–Pleistocene sequence, including the first regional records of Ammospermophilus. Based on dental morphology and the ecology of modern congeners, we interpret faunal change through the sequence as primarily reflecting a shift from a Pliocene assemblage of “southwestern” taxa with granivorous/omnivorous diets (relatively low-crowned, transversely narrow cheek teeth) in warm and at least occasionally dry shrub or shrub-steppe habitats (Ammospermophilus, Otospermophilus, Ictidomys meadensis [Hibbard, 1941a]), to a Pleistocene temperate assemblage of grazing taxa that either exhibited relatively high-crowned, transversely wider cheek teeth (Urocitellus, Cynomys, Ictidomys tridecemlineatus [Mitchill, 1821]) or were otherwise dependent on grassland habitats (Poliocitellus). The early Pleistocene Borchers assemblage was transitional in this regard, heralding a “revolution” observed as well with other clades in the Meade Basin rodent community. This interpretation is broadly congruent with evidence of Pliocene climatic change and the staged development of regional grasslands, with the modern proportion of C3/C4 plants established in the Meade Basin during the early Pleistocene.

Abstract:
It has been known since the early simulations of Wright (1972), and Toomre & Toomre (1972), that interactions between galaxies can give rise to quite spectacular morphological features, including spiral structure in disk galaxies, and extensive tails. It appears that long tidal tails only arise from interactions involving disk galaxies (Toomre & Toomre 1972), and thus the presence of two opposed long tidal tails in a number of disturbed galaxies such as the Antennae (Whitmore & Schweizer 1995), NGC 3921 (Schweizer 1996), and NGC 7252 (Schweizer 1982), has led to the interpretation of these galaxies as disk-disk mergers in progress. These systems can be modeled rather successfully, as the work of Hibbard & Mihos (1995) has shown.

Abstract:
A new collection of lagomorphs and rodents from the Deer Park B local fauna (l.f.) of Meade County, Kansas is described and compared with other small mammal assemblages of the Meade Basin, including the underlying Deer Park A l.f. Deer Park A was correctly assigned by Hibbard to the Blancan, bridging the gap between earlier Blancan faunas such as Fox Canyon and the late Blancan Sanders l.f. Recent fieldwork indicates that the Deer Park quarries may lie in the Rexroad Formation, rather than in the Ballard Formation as previously assumed. The geology and extinct mammalian contingent at Deer Park suggest that the lower horizon of Deer Park A was an active spring that gradually turned into a marshy environment during Deer Park B time. The rodents of Deer Park B are indicative of an open prairie ecosystem that might have been somewhat more arid than that of southwestern Kansas today.

Abstract:
Stephanie Cain Van D’Elden’s prodigious volume on illustrations of the Tristan materials fills a gap in research on the Tristan illustrations by providing a single, authoritative resource for them. As the author explains, its purpose is quite simply “to list all the extant manuscripts, artefacts, and objets d’art, and to describe all the scenes depicted on them” (3). Building upon previous studies of illustrations by literary critics and art historians over the past century, including works by Hella Frühmorgen-Voss, Norbert H. Ott, and Robert Sherman and Laura Hibbard Loomis, as well as the exhibition of Arthurian art and literature in Leuven at the XVth Congress of the International Arthurian Society in 1987, Van D’Elden collected over 500 images from the broad span of Tristan sources, identifying them according to the manuscripts or objects which they adorn, as well as categorizing them by the specific scenes in the Tristan materials they depict. Van D’Elden’s efforts to organize and catalogue over 500 items, reproduced clearly and cleanly in fine detail, will serve as a valuable contribution for decades to come to our cross-disciplinary understanding of Tristan, one of the most important tales of the European Middle Ages.

Abstract:
Background:Patient activation describes the skills, abilities and confidence someone uses to actively manage their health. Patient activation abilities in rheumatology are unclear, and there is little knowledge about factors that explain variation in patient activation. Therefore, understanding these factors can contribute to the development of appropriate, rheumatology-specific interventions targeting activation. The Patient Activation Measure (PAM) captures patient activation and provides people with both a score and a level to describe how able they are to actively manage their health. Objectives:To explore longitudinal changes to patient activation (measured using the PAM) (Hibbardet al., 2005), and the PAM’s associations with related constructs (including self-efficacy, health literacy and health beliefs) in a sample of participants with inflammatory arthritis. Methods:A postal survey was administered at two time points that were nine months apart. This survey captured the PAM and a range of clinical, demographic and psychosocial variables in a sample of rheumatology patients from 6 NHS sites in England. The measures included in the survey had been selected based on both theory and prior qualitative research and the survey pack was designed in collaboration with a patient partner. Following data collection, candidate variables for a multiple regression analysis were initially identified using univariable analysis. These variables were included in a forced entry multiple regression at each time point, and the variables that were statistically significant contributors at a 0.1 level were included in the final models. Changes to PAM scores over time were investigated using a Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test.Results:251 participants completed the first survey and 154 participants completed both full surveys. Self-efficacy, illness beliefs, health literacy and health locus of control were consistently associated with variance in PAM scores. The first three factors were also predictive of variance in PAM levels. With the 154 participants who fully completed both surveys, there was a statistically significant difference in participants’ PAM scores between the two surveys. Conclusion:The findings suggest factors that may be targets for interventions that aim to increase patient activation. The changes to PAM scores across the data collection period also suggest that when using the PAM as a clinical tool, healthcare professionals would benefit from incorporating regular reviews and preparations for any increases or reductions in patient activation.References:[1]Hibbard, J.H., Mahoney, E.R., Stockard, J. and Tusler, M. Abstract:
AbstractRural communities have faced significant socio-economic challenges for the past several decades due to structural shifts and changing social expectations regarding the management, production of, and markets for natural resources, including production agriculture. The New Natural Resource Economy (NNRE) is an economic development approach to the use of natural resources, including agriculture, in ways that can build healthy environments and healthy, resilient local economies (Hibbard and Lurie, 2013). A major attribute of the NNRE is its focus on very small businesses, the predominant business type in rural settings. Emerging trends, such as regional food networks (RFNs) that connect food producers to consumers within a state or local region, may provide opportunities for rural communities to diversify and expand local businesses around the use of natural resources, thereby helping to restore greater capacity for self-direction and adding to local community vitality. Thus, we address whether RFNs in rural Oregon counties display characteristics of an NNRE development strategy through the relationships between agricultural producers and consumers that support very small agricultural enterprises. Based on analysis of Oregon producer survey data from 2016 in the more rural resource-dependent Oregon counties, we find that the RFN producer survey respondents are indeed very small businesses engaged in small-scale, multifunctional agriculture. They are motivated by economic, social, and environmental concerns as they contribute to the economic activity in their communities. We also surveyed Oregon consumers, finding that although consumer survey respondents in the same region are not primarily driven to buy local based on environmental considerations, they are nonetheless interested in supporting agriculture and local businesses. The demand for local products can create a virtuous cycle contributing to the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of the community. Given appropriate policy and program support, there is fertile ground to create new opportunities to generate farm income and acquire food within the NNRE healthy environment-healthy economy paradigm for rural economic development.

Abstract:
Thirty-two species of silica-scaled Chrysophyceae of the genera Spiniferomonas, Chrysosphaerella and Paraphysomonas, belonging to the Paraphysomonadaceae Preisig & Hibberd, 1983, and Mallomonas, Mallomonopsis and Synura, belonging to the Mallomonadaceae (Diesing, 1866) Preisig & Hibberd, 1983, are recognized by electron microscopy from a wide range of Australian freshwater habitats, from tropical to temperate regions, and from a range of trophic types of lake. Eleven species are reported from Australia for the first time, and three from the Southern Hemisphere for the first time. Although most of the species are of worldwide occurrence, several are as yet known only from Australia. Several highly dystrophic lakes in Tasmania are particularly rich in species numbers and in population densities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In a recent report, our group presented clinical research data supporting the role of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency in susceptibility to meningococcal disease (W. A. Bax, O. J. J. Cluysenaer, A. K. M. Bartelink, P. C. Aerts, R. A. B. Ezekowitz, and H. van Dijk, Lancet 354:1094-1095, 1999). This association was reported earlier by Hibberd et al. (M. L. Hibberd, M. Sumiya, J. A. Summerfield, R. Booy, M. Levin, and the Meningococcal Research Group, Lancet 353:1049-1053, 1999) but was not based on family data. Our study included three members of one family who had acquired meningococcal meningitis in early adulthood. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether the genotypes of the MBL gene in this family, analyzed by PCR, correlate with MBL concentrations. We found that genotype variants in the MBL gene and promoter region match the low functional MBL levels (<0.25 μg of equivalents/ml) in the sera of the three patients in this family and that a significant correlation between genotype MBL deficiency and meningococcal disease existed.

Abstract:
Two little-known unpigmented species of the chrysophyte genus Paraphysomonas are reported. Paraphysomonas caelifrica Preisig & Hibberd was found in samples collected from an Ontario pond in the autumn of 1985; it had not been reported previously from North America. An amended description is given of Paraphysomonas subrotacea Thomsen that includes reniform scales observed in the type material from Denmark and other localities including Ontario.
